The Prophet had been doing a wonderful job of scaring people senseless in the days leading up to the next full moon. This one wasn't the average every day full moon but a full and total lunar eclipse. Mali would be lying if she pretended that it didn't give her some sort of anxiety but deep down in her heart she knew that everything was going to be okay, that the werewolf she knew would get through this alright and the next morning everything would be fine and they could start preparing for the next full moon. That full moon was going to be a very big one for Eoin and Mali if all went to plan. Because of the seriousness of the night, she thought it might be a good idea to stop by the home of her wolfy friend to make sure that he had everything he needed and was all set to settle in and wait out the moon's effects. Normally when coming to visit someone, Mali liked to bring a gift of some sort, a small thoughtful token but unfortunately she was forced to show up empty handed on his door step. Her knock was rhythmic and upbeat because despite everything, her mood was good. Things were calm, the idea Eoin and she had gave her purpose and Theo was going to spend the night with her. Mali waited for the man to answer the door, heart squeezing at the idea that the rumor of increased irritability and aggression but her normal wide smile set on her face anyway. She swayed from foot to foot, humming a made up melody to herself 'til the door opened. " 'Ello!" she said, employing a little extra brightness in case the situation needed it. "I just came by to see if you needed anything before tonight. I'm sure you don't feel well and I thought I'd see if I could help. All ready for it?" _______________________________ Remus Lupin

Months like this made Remus feel like a bloody joke of a man. A man who waltzed around pretending he had a handle on the condition that had afflicted him since he was a child - until one little change knocked him completely on his ass. It wasn't even like total lunar eclipses were even all that rare; just uncommon enough to let him get used to it being one way, and then switching it all up on him. And if he was being honest with himself, Remus was completely dependent on wolfsbane. He would have been much worse off without it. Honestly, he probably would have been dead. He let himself think it was some miracle drug, but miracles aren't supposed to only work some of the time. Times like these, he felt all but abandoned.
The increased aggression and irritation didn't help any in that respect, not to mention the mountains of lingering grief he hadn't even come close to climbing yet, much less surmounting. It was safe to say, simply, Remus was in a bad mood. He canceled most of his classes and gave them essays to work on instead, even sent one of the few things that actually managed to make him smile - his kids - away on a 'funcation' for a few days at some Weasley's house or another, for their safety. Remus would never in his life harm his children - and that meant emotionally, too. They didn't need to see their dad like this.
Mostly, Remus was just tired. With the evening now on his heels, he was already just tired of feeling bad. He didn't need this on top of everything else right now, but such was his lot in life. Tonight would be even worse - but then he would have coffee in the morning, and slowly, be able to kick back into gear. Just like he always did. Remus sat by the fireplace - tonight would be a cold night in the cellar, with no fur to keep him warm, he needed to catch all the heat he could now - and he mulled over this promise made to him by Mali with a small smile on his face. She was a gem, truly. It was those small little promises that always seemed to worm their way right into his heart. Nobody could fix this for him, or live through it for him, but they could bring him food and coffee the morning after.
And apparently, check in the evening before. The knock at Remus' door set his nerves off, even if it wasn't the typical authoritarian rapping of a Ministry official. Mali's face in the doorway eased off some of those nerves, even if her brightness made him wince a little, like sunshine after too many days in the dark. "Hi; come in," he stepped out of the doorway and swept her in. He wouldn't mind a little company at all. And even if he was grumpy, he wasn't sure it was possible to be mad at someone like Mali. Just like the heat from the fire, he should probably try to absorb all the cheeriness he could before tonight, to get him through. "I'm as ready as I can be, I think. Do you have time to just sit a while? I could use the company." Remus ducked his head, but he wasn't as embarrassed as he usually would be to be a grown man admitting he needed attention. He was already far past that point with Mali.

Mali hummed and waited for the door to open, swaying slightly on her feet. It didn't take too terribly long before a familiar face was poking through the opened door. She expected to feel tense and on edge, Mister Lupin certainly looked like he was feeling off but she felt surprisingly at ease 'til the man winced. The brightness of her smile and general demeanor dimmed and her cheerfulness began to unravel around the edges, although she wouldn't acknowledge it. Now wasn't the time to let things go to pieces, it was a time to be an unwavering show of support. That's what Hufflepuffs did best (and she would always be a Hufflepuff at heart. Even fifty years from now when she's old and grey, Mali will still bleed black and yellow.)
He ushered her inside and Mali complied, stepping over the threshold and into the werewolf's lair. "Your home is really charming." It felt old and comfortable. Practical and maybe a little subdued, a nice contrast to her own home with it's bright colors and pet accessories lining the walls. The little flat she shared with Eoin was much more suitable for the animals than it was for the humans, but they liked it and it fit them. This place fit Mister Lupin very well but was at odds with her mental image of his wife. Pink hair, rebellious streak. As her thoughts turned to the late Tonks, Mali found herself wondering about the more gruesome details of the woman's death. From what she could see there were no outward signs that a tragedy had taken place within the very walls. Perhaps it happened elsewhere, she never really pushed for details. Personally, she wouldn't be able to live where someone died.
Mali's smile softened into something more genuine and edged with sympathy. "Yeah, of course." she nodded, taking care to keep her tone gentle without undertones of pity. No one really wanted to be pitied, and she was sure Mister Lupin had enough pity to last himself a lifetime. He didn't need it from her. "I've got all day, actually." They had plenty to talk about, anyway. Their friendship was a strange one, built on tragedy and peril but not so much on knowledge. She knew he wasn't dark, probably one of the lightest and bravest people she'd ever met, but not how he came to be that way. He was certainly an interesting man, and those were things she wondered about. Maybe those topics would be best saved for another day, though. A little heavy. Instead, she went for something safer. Small talk, something to steer his mind away from the full moon. Asking how he was seemed silly considering.
"So, Professor," she started with a hint of a teasing grin. "How are you enjoying teaching this term? You've taught once before, right? I think if I've got it all figured correctly I missed you by a year."
