Somehow the locked ward was more painful now than it had ever been. Before they confessed and got locked away in their own homes, it was a place she visited almost daily. The ache was dull but repetitive, poking at wounds that hadn't really been allowed to close up. With space and time away came healing, and the wound that the loss of her patients had left was nearly all closed up. Her return to work ripped the scab clear off, leaving the wound raw and especially sensitive. The pain was sharp, ever present and distracting. It was a busy day at the hospital to begin with, the workload would be overwhelming even on the best days but with all her feelings to flounder through, Mali felt like she was drowning not even an hour after she stepped through the hospital doors. It was all she could do to keep her head above the sea of patients and treatments, to breathe. She made many mistakes, angered some patients, but the upside of the busy and hectic work day meant she didn't have time to notice the stiff way some coworkers reacted to her return. Mali cracked when she attempted to Episkey the wrong limb. She fled the floor and went in search of Theo because she really needed a friendly face. It took a few minutes to track him down, Medi-Wizards could be anywhere or not in the hospital at all but luckily someone'd seen Theo's troll-like form lumbering on up to the tearoom and was able to point her in the right direction. He was easy to find once she knew where to look, head and shoulders above most other people. He had just queued up in line when she made it to the tearoom and gift shop. Mali trailed over behind him without a word, arms sneaking around his waists as she pressed up against his back. The closeness made everything feel less intense. Theo was wonderful for that, he made things easier without even really having to do anything. Just him being 'there' was all she needed. When the anxiety had loosened from around her lungs and she could breathe a little easier, Mali only grumbled a "Hello." into his back. ________________________________________ Theo Ashland

After quite the rocky morning on his first day back, Theo needed a tea break. Really, he needed something stronger than a tea break, but it was still mid-afternoon and that would have to wait until after work hours. Tea would have to do for now. With a sore face and a slightly sour attitude, Theo headed to the upper floor for afternoon tea, hounded by a large majority of the rest of the staff, but trying his best to ignore them. A good number of them didn't want to talk to him anyway. The last thing Theo wanted to do was single himself out on his way back in, but today he was grateful for it. He didn't have the answers or the will to answer the questions they did have at this point.
Whilst he waited in line for some tea and maybe a sandwich, Theo turned his attention to anything that wasn't a person. The recycling bins were turning out to be quite the entertainment of the afternoon, when Theo felt arms snake around his waist. He didn't even have to question who's they were, even with his new utter distrust of the hospital and, largely, the people in it. He recognized that familiar feeling of closeness, that particular brand of warmth. He ran his hands over Mali's before turning to face her, keeping within the embrace of her arms. Her voice vibrated against his spine and sent tingles through his skin.
"Hi baby," he greeted, wrapping his arms around her as well. He kept his eye on the queue, pulling them an inch forward as the line moved. He put a gentle finger under Mali's chin so she would look at him. As nasty as today was for him, he spent a large chunk of it worrying about her. She had to be up there, on the floor where it all happened. They'd managed that together for a time, briefly, but after months of being away Theo imagined it wasn't that easy on her. "You okay?"

Theo was wonderful. He didn't even tense when accosted by an unknown source from behind. His touch was soothing, fingers running the back of her hand and it worked to untangle her building anxiety and irritation. She melted into Theo, relaxing against him. From outside of their relationship it would be easy to think that Mali did more for Theo, after all she helped him cover up a murder and led them into the confession. But that would be disregarding sweet little moments like this where he literally held her together and she fell even deeper in love with him.
And he had petnames like 'baby' that made her crack the faintest of grins. She was never good at coming up with them, her patients were often referred to as 'sweetness' but never lovers. Besides, she liked the name 'Theo', the way it sounded and the way it felt on her tongue. "No." she answered his question very honestly, Mali was good at being open and a little vulnerable. "I can't keep up, it's so much. I keep messing everything up. I couldn't figure out why Episkey wasn't working but-- and-- it was the wrong limb. I switched up potions and fudged up a splinting and---" She started to unravel, taking on a frenzied and overwhelmed undertone but then she noticed something amiss on his face.
"What..." she took his chin and tilted his head so she could see it better, a bruise blooming on his jaw. "Did someone hit you?" What else could it be? He wasn't one to randomly bang into things, that was her job. It did provide a distraction from her original problem. This gave her something physical to focus on and anger burned hot in her veins. She ran her fingers over the mark, taking care not to press on the wound. "Who was it?" She was going to fight them. "Why did they do it? Did you hit them back?" Mali was mostly sugar but there was a little spice in there somewhere. "You should have, if you didn't. I have half a mind to go do it myself." Everything was better with a kiss so she stood on the tip of her toes to press a gentle one against his injured jaw before him forward in line.

No. She wasn't okay. Theo frowned, his thumb joining his finger and running along Mali's jaw as she told him everything that was wrong. He nodded in understanding and empathy - it was too much. He was running into similar problems, not just his Healing skills but his magic in general had gotten rusty over the past few months - but again, it had to be harder for Mali. She was in constant care of her patients and as a specialist the cases were often much trickier. When Theo was called out, more often than not, he saw much of the same things. And if not...the patient was sent off to a specialist. "It's okay, you're okay." He rubbed the small of her back as she worked herself up. The absolute last thing they needed was a breakdown in front of all their coworkers. "You'll get back into the swing of things. We could go down and ask if maybe they can lighten your load..."
Theo was talking under Mali as she went on, trying to get her to calm down, but her hand on his face shut him right up and caused him to flinch. Not because he thought she was going to hurt him - just the context of having someone's hands close to his face so soon again. Mali jumped right on it, too, asking him right out if someone hit him. Shit. He probably should have tried something on the sore spot on his chin, bruise paste or something. Surely it was showing. He hadn't even thought about that, hadn't even bothered to look in a mirror. It wasn't the first time his jaw had been bruised and it didn't really bother him all that much - but it probably wasn't the brightest of ideas to walk around with a huge bruise on his face right now.
He was worried about his coworkers, but apparently, it was Mali he should worry about. Her touch was comforting, better than any potion or paste, but her words were far from that. So many questions. And she wanted to fight someone - great. Also exactly what they needed to do on their first day back. Theo failed to answer her as she asked one question after the other, even closing his eyes when she kissed his bruise, but he knew he couldn't just keep her in the dark like that. She might actually go find someone to fight then. "I'm fine." He assured her, pulling her hands down to hold them in his between them. "It was just a misunderstanding. We've really got to watch what he say around here. For a while, at least." He leaned down to kiss her forehead and smiled into it. "And please don't go punching anyone if you can help it, okay? Do you want tea?" They'd reached the counter. Theo put his order in, definitely getting that sandwich now, and looked down at Mali expectantly.
