The official start of winter was still a ways around the corner, but the weather was edging into blustery territory. The sun made the weather tolerable and pleasant enough, warm ribbons of sunshine cutting through the cold air. Mali was dressed against the chill, a purple knit hat atop her head and a matching scarf wrapped snuggly around her neck. In truth, even if her nose was turning red in the cold, this was one of her favorite sorts of weather. It was perfect for snuggling up with hot chocolate, something she looked forward to doing with a very tall, handsome someone later on. Right now she was taking advantage of the weather with a picnic on a picturesque hill in Ottery St. Catchpole. It was charming little village with a pleasant mix of magical and muggle residences. There was even a delightful yarn shop that she was planning on pillaging through before she headed home.
Her companion for the day was Remus Lupin, a man she'd become quite close with in the recent months. Poor soul had been through a lot in the recent weeks and she was making sure that he wasn't left alone to stew in his grief. Plus, while it was nice place to start getting their wolfsbane plans together. Mali and Eoin had decided to start a little not-so-legal wolfsbane operation and...whatever else you wanted to call it. Werewolf welfare interest group? They had big plans (and had drafted Theo into service, whether he liked it or not) and the man in question was the perfect source of information having been a werewolf longer than anyone she knew (granted, he was the only werewolf she knew.)
The witch was stretched out on top of a blanket laid out in the grass, hands folded over her stomach watching the clouds scroll by and mentally picking shapes out of them. This was something she could do for hours, but there were other matters to attend to. Wolfsbane, for one. It might be risky, but it was definitely the right thing to do. Mali sat up into a sitting position, reaching for a handful of pretzels (she was happiest when she was eating, as most Hufflepuffs were) before broaching the subject with her new werewolf test subject. "So.." Mali started, munching on a pretzel stick. "Have you ever brewed wolfsbane yourself? Eoin said it's dreadfully difficult but he's brilliant with that sort've thing."

Remus couldn't recall ever having had a picnic in November before, but now that he was out here having one, he couldn't think of any idea better than this. It was the perfect combination of chilly air and warm sunshine, and with the aid of a little magic and one exceptionally cozy aquamarine scarf, he was right comfortable.
Add in a tasty spread of food and an enjoyable companion, and Remus was happy as a bug. Happy. He was rather surprised with himself, really. He had expected that feeling to disappear from him entirely, at least for a little while, but it never really did. Life was just strange that way, he supposed. Didn't he know it, from so many times before? As long as he was alive, there would always be the occasional little flicker of hope - or love or laughter or light - no matter how hollow and cavernous his chest felt. The grief was stark, yes, but it wasn't all of him. Never had been.
While Mali watched clouds, Remus ate. He had little appetite in the week leading up to the full moon, but afterward it always came back with a vengeance. He was already on his second sandwich when Mali hauled herself up and grabbed some pretzels.
And speaking of the full moon...Remus swallowed a bite of bread and shook his head. "No, I haven't. My potions skills are decidedly average, but the ingredients have always been far too expensive." Remus could barely afford the completed potion now. It had crossed his mind many times before, that he could make it for himself, but at the very least it would be a challenge. He couldn't afford the ingredients, and he definitely couldn't afford wasting them on a failed potion. "Speaking of, have you two got a plan for that? How to get what we need? I could probably spare a little to help."

Up on their hill, settled on the big comfy blanket, everything felt alright. It wasn't, not by a long shot but at least they could pretend for a little while. Currently her biggest worry was whether the cloud drifting by looked more like a pygmy puff or a dust bunny. Mister Lupin was making short work of their packed supplies and that was wonderful. People didn't eat when they didn't feel well and if anyone deserved to feel well it was him. He'd been through a lot, it would be accurate to say that he'd been through more than she and Theo and that was saying something. A few near death experiences, the loss of his beloved wife, Ministry persecution. He had a resilient spirit and that was something Mali admired. No matter what was thrown at him, he persevered through it all.
It was almost surreal how their relationship had changed. From regarding him with apprehension to holding the man in a position of respect and admiration. She enjoyed their time together, he was easy to be around. Mister Lupin allowed her to take care of him when he needed it and then returned the favor. Mali was very fond of their friendship, it was something precious in a world that was proving to be very cruel. So she was very pleased with their autumn picnic, even if it was a bit nippy. What wasn't to love when you had pretzels? She munched happily, listening to him speak. "That's alright. You're brilliant at other things." If anyone knew anything about being average, it was her. Average wasn't so bad, there was always room for improvement. "Potions are a bit frustrating, if you ask me. It's too exact, fudge up one little measurement and it's useless. I'm pretty terrible at it myself but I'm good at assisting Eoin." Mali tilted her head thoughtfully. "Or at least good at moral support. This'll be his gig more than anything."
The question of ingredients had been discussed at length. They were pricey alright, and some were still hard to come by if you could afford it. Undoubtedly the new Ministry regulation would see the already steep prices sky rocket. "Erm.." she started, shoving another pretzel stick into her mouth to buy her some time. "Well." It was not something she was enthusiastic about discussing, it felt sort've like a slap in the face to whoever helped keeped her out of prison, but Mali was done with lying. She decided that weeks ago. "I've got a fair amount of galleons stashed up. We're pretty simple, just have to keep our furry children fed." It wasn't all a financial burden, they had other resources. Mali abandoned the pretzels in favor of an apple that she took a stalling bite out of. "And..." She was very hesitant to continue on. It might've been wrong in the eyes of the law, but it still felt like the right thing to do. They saw something bad and they were obligated to do something about it, anyway they could. The end would justify their means. "St. Mungo's stocks a lot of the ingredients. Eoin's in charge of the pharmacy. We've nicked a few things." With a shrug of her shoulders she tried to play it off as if stealing was no big deal while indulging in another bite of her apple. It really wasn't that bad, they weren't very likely to get caught.

Oftentimes, compliments made Remus uncomfortable. Years of no self-esteem at all turned out to be incredibly damaging to a man that many people now held in high regard. Mali, though, managed to do it in a way that just left him with a pleasant warm feeling. Maybe because their friendship was a special one. Not that Remus minded one bit, he lived for this sort of thing, but many of his friendships started with people coming to him for advice or help. When he met Mali for the first time, she had to help him, and she didn't hold him in any sort of regard at all. In a way, he had to earn Mali's respect. Her compliments came from what she knew and not just what she'd heard, and that mattered to Remus - who, truth be told, was actually a big fan of that pleasant warm feeling when he felt he'd actually earned it.
"I wouldn't say that," Remus said after a pause of finishing off a sandwich half and opening a bottle of butterbeer. "This was your idea, too. He's the brains, you're the passion - that's brilliant, too." He smiled knowingly at Mali. Okay, maybe the compliments still pushed a bit funnily at him - he still felt the urge to let the compliment-giver know she was brilliant as well. "I do agree that potions can be terribly frustrating, though. I don't think I've got the patience for it. I'm more than happy to be moral support in this case, or whatever support we can be. Maybe you and I can work together on finding more werewolves? I've got some contacts."
Remus frowned slightly at the uncomfortable way Mali reacted to his questions. It felt too much like the way they used to be, and Remus didn't want those days back. Didn't want to make Mali feel that way around him. He trusted Mali - it was hard to gain such full trust from him, and even harder to lose it. He knew Mali was a good person. He didn't know Eoin as well, but the man's associations were a pretty good sign of his character.
Then, the truth came out. The two little thieves had stolen from the hospital pharmacy. Remus had to bite down on his bottom lip to stop himself from laughing, but a smile still spread across his face. To see her feel so guilty over something he found so trivial...Remus was a man of justice, yes, but he was far from a man of the law just for law's sake. He often found the two at odds with one another, really - certainly in this case. To him, the real criminal act here was the price gouging enacted by the Ministry and undoubtedly supported by the hospital. "Serves them right," he said, grinning at her. "Better the stock go to someone who can actually use it for its intended purpose, rather than expiring on a shelf because no one can afford it." He was suddenly inspired to make some joke about how impossible it would be to peg two people as innocent looking as Mali and Eoin as thieves anyway, but it felt a bit inappropriate, given.

Mali brightened at Mister Lupin's use of the word 'brilliant' in regards to her. That was a nice thing to hear, even if she didn't fully buy into it. While her self esteem had never been much of a problem, certainly not as much as his, she was perfectly aware that she was not 'brilliant' in the normal sense of the word. She was bright, but not exceptionally so and her charm work often left...a lot to be desired while her potion making was often dangerous if she attempted it without Eoin's guidance. Her brain pulled too fast in too many directions to take the time to precisely measure out beetle eyes or how many times she stirred something. That was alright with her, though. "You're really sweet." Mali tilted her head back, face up to the sky to hide the blush coloring her cheeks. "That cloud up there..." She pointed out the one almost directly above them. "Looks like a cauldron. Fitting, given the conversation. If it were my cauldron it'd probably be on fire or something.."
The 'finding more werewolves' bit drew her attention straight back to the conversation and away from the shapes in the sky. "Are you able to tell if other people are werewolves.. like a sort of sense.. or do you have to guess?" Admittedly, she was very uneducated on the nature of werewolves but was working on remedying that and had a stack of books on the subject at home waiting for her. "Are werewolves friendly towards one another as a sort've rule? Like because you've got some furry bond between you?" Mali reached for a butterbeer herself, taking a thoughtful sip before going on to add her own ideas. "I've noticed the Ministry posting in the Prophet looking for census takers and registrars for their little creature crusade.. I think a position there might be useful in helping connect to Beings and Creatures, beyond your connections but I'm not fond of the place as a whole." That, and she liked the hospital. Healing was her niche, the one area she did feel brilliant in.
Strangely Mali found that she disliked it when Mister Lupin frowned even more than when other people did. Something twisted uncomfortably in her chest, which lightened later when he was smiling again. But why was he smiling? She just confessed to committing a crime. The last time she did that he pressured her in to tell the aurors. No just any auror, either, Harry freaking Potter. The Auror. She tilted her head to the side, confusion playing across her own features "What're you smiling at?" Not that she minded. Smiling suited his poor scarred face much better than frowning did. It surprised her to hear that he wasn't upset at their thievery, that he didn't seem to feel like it was throwing away all the work he'd done to keep her out of prison. She was making quite a habit of criminal behavior, it seemed. At least it was always motivated by good intentions. "Right." Mali agreed with a nod, his grin catching on. "I think we're safe anyway. Have you ever seen Eoin when he's angry? No one's got the guts to accuse him of theft. He'd throw an auror out of his pharmacy by their ear if they came poking around."

Mali wasn't much of a compliment taker, either, it seemed. The smile on his face grew when she turned her head back toward the clouds - as he still totally caught the color spreading through her cheeks. That hadn't been his intention...but it was sort of endearing. To him Mali really was brilliant. Everyone had some brilliant light to them, typically, all shining in different colors. Remus stayed silent, enjoying being deemed sweet, and followed Mali's gaze to the clouds. After a quick glance around their little picnic spot, a relatively empty hill overlooking the village below, Remus grinned and swished a finger through the air. If one was looking from the right angle - such as, say, leaning back on a picnic blanket - the sparks that leaped from the tip of his finger sort of looked like they were gushing from the top of the cauldron-shaped cloud. "Ah, there we go. Did you do that?" He turned his grin on the woman next to him.
The topic of werewolves usually wasn't much to smile about, but Remus couldn't help it as Mali hit him with a round of her own questions. "We can sort of...smell one another," he said a bit sheepishly. It was always hard for him to explain how different a powerful sense of smell was; it was something he was still getting used to himself, after all these years. "And I'd say the scars give it away more than anything. They all sort of look the same." At Mali's next question, Remus snorted a laugh. Not at her, more at the use of the phrase 'furry bond'. It was a good question, really, one he had to think about for a few moments after composing himself. "I think we tend toward the opposite, really. You have to remember, all werewolves have been attacked by a werewolf, that's how it begins. Doesn't exactly inspire the warm and fuzzies in people." He tilted his head to the side. "The older you get, the easier it is to get over it, though. For some. And then, of course you want to stick with people that can understand you."
Mali then brought up an interesting idea that made Remus pause and regard her with an impressed look in his eye. She was thinking like an Order member - using the Ministry's power against itself. "That's clever," he said, impression leaking into his voice. "But a bit risky, yes. The Ministry's not fond of infiltrators. If not you, though, I'm sure we could find somebody to throw in there." His grin returned. "Not me, though. I'm already on my fair share of lists, no registration needed."
Remus' grin finally gained some attention and he found it grew even more at the look of confusion he inspired on Mali's face. Oh yes, he was quite the wild card, wasn't he? Remus was highly amused, grin splitting into a laugh when Mali caught on and returned the gesture. And graced him with a story about Eoin. "He sounds like the guy we definitely need on our side, then. Remind me to never make him angry, hey?"

One moment Mali was imagining shapes in the clouds, the next she was slapping a hand over her mouth to stifle a laugh. The cloud she deemed a cauldron emitted sparks! Or rather, Remus' finger placed just right made it look just like a scene from her many attempts at potion making, cauldron flaming. Or at the very least sparking. She gave him a playful shove while working to tame the giggles and snickers "Oh, you're such a brat!" A sweet brat, but a cheeky brat too. She had half a mind to 'extinguish' his sparks with a flick of the Aguamenti spell but it wasn't quite as impressive when you had to use a wand and it was pretty cold outside, even if it technically wasn't winter. Mali switched positions, rolling onto her side to face him, head propped up in a palm and nose wrinkling playfully. "You think you're pretty clever, don't you?" Her mind moved pretty fast, ideas and questions fluttered through her mind randomly like butterflies, one occasionally landing and demanding to be asked. It was a bit of childish innocence, she never really outgrew the curious and questioning phase.
Mali sat up fully, reaching to take one of his hands and examine it. She turned it over in her own, thumb running over his palm before she relinquished his hand back to him. "How d'you even do that? How do you learn to use magic without a wand? Where does it even come from?" She always found magic fascinating, but to wield it without a wand? Amazing, even if she saw it quite a bit hanging around with her new friend. Her head was full of butterflies today, lots of random thoughts and questions. They went from wands to werewolves and Mali listened attentively, trying to commit everything he said to memory. "Do you have a stronger sense of smell all the time or just during your transformation? Do you see better at night, too?" She didn't want this little outing to be all business, all about his howling problem so she interjected a random question that was about Lupin as a person, not as a werewolf. "What's your favorite scent? What would you smell if you made that one really strong love potion? I'd probably smell smoke personally, because my cauldron'd be on fire."
She frowned when Mister Lupin brought up scars. That was terrible and heartbreaking, something she wasn't necessarily ready to hear. All werewolves were scarred, did that mean all werewolves tore at their skin? That they all emerged from their transformation bleeding and injured, alone? Mister Lupin had his wife for a long time to help him get through the transformations but many people feared werewolves, they couldn't of all been so lucky. "That should bring them together." In true Hufflepuff form, Mali was all for banding together in friendship. "If every werewolf was bitten by another werewolf then that should---shouldn't they feel like.. a kinship? They're all victims of the same thing." It was all hard for her to understand, her heart was drowning in sympathy for the poor creatures. Imagine being bitten, but being angry at the only people who could understand. "It must be so isolating..." But Lupin didn't have to feel isolated, even now that his wife was gone. She wouldn't allow for it. Another question was soon on the tip of her tongue and tumbling past her lips before her brain could catch up and make her swallow it back. "Have you ever bitten anyone?"
Her idea was clearly a winner with Mister Lupin and he even sounded impressed which did make her feel sort of brilliant. It coaxed the edges of her grin wider, brighter. "I don't know that involving anymore people is a good idea. The more people who know, the more people who can talk. Let things slip." Honestly, she was most likely to let anything slip. People earned Mali's trust far too easily and she was very chatty but this was a challenge. It was important to her and she would rise to it if she could stomach being in the building for more than a few minutes. "I can do it, I think." Plus, Eoin'd kill her if she went and got herself arrested again. Speaking of the pharmacist... "I think you're safe for now, he likes you well enough."

A brat! Remus tried to give Mali a look of mock affront, but her giggles were contagious and soon enough he was laughing, too. He was a bit of a brat, wasn't he? That had always been his role, not the showboat or the center of attention but rather the snarky one doing tricks from the corner. There was no one around to call him Moony with any sincerity anymore...but Remus still very much held onto that part of him. His playfulness came out naturally when he was happy, and right now, happy was his focus. "I prefer hysterical," he grinned at Mali once the sparks and laughter died down.
Suddenly, she was sitting up, taking his hand and examining it like some magical specimen. Remus obliged her, even sending off one more round of sparks from his finger so she could see them up close. When she let go, he held his hand up in the air, turning his palm this way and that in the sun. "All the magic you'll ever use is already inside of you. Wands are just a focus point, a tool; it's all a matter of concentration." He dropped his hand into his lap and looked back at Mali. "Do you remember practicing nonverbal spells for your NEWTs? It's the same sort of feeling - all in your head."
Mali was full of questions today, leaving Remus feeling not exhausted but invigorated. He lived for these moments, after all - everything was a teaching moment. He held no pretenses about the limits of his wisdom and knowledge but was always eager to share what he did know. "Mm, it's definitely strongest on the full moon. But all the time, I still think it's stronger than most. For instance - I knew what we were having for lunch before you even made it to the top of the hill," he grinned again. "Sight not so much. I've bad vision anyway; I expect I'll need to see about getting glasses soon." There was a surefire way to make him feel old...Remus sighed, concentrating back on Mali's questions. Not all of them were of an academic nature and Remus certainly didn't need them to be. He found himself more than wanting her to know every little thing she wanted to know about him. "Surely, there's something better than smoke for you," he framed it as a question, chuckling. "I think my favorite is probably...oh, who am I kidding, that's an easy one. Chocolate."
Smiles were just as in abundance as questions today, but the topic of werewolves always had that tendency to make any conversation precarious. Remus tried to keep his own smile up even when Mali frowned, mostly for her sake. He knew a lot of what he said about his condition sounded devastating to people that didn't understand it; to him, it was just life. He really did appreciate, though, Mali's attempts to band werewolves together. "Right. I get what you mean. But you have to understand...it can be sort of difficult to accept the thing that effectively ended your life as you knew it. It takes time." He simply nodded when she ventured that the condition sounded isolating. "Very." And then she had another question for him...this one giving him great pause. At first, Remus stared into his lap. He hated to think someone like Mali even thought him capable of such a thing - but such was the reality of his condition. When he finally looked back up at her, a more somber smile reappeared. "No. I've been very careful, and blessed with people that want to keep me safe." Not always, but those sorts of people tended to have a residual effect on Remus. Even when they were gone, they inspired him to take care of himself.
Enough about him, though. He was happy to answer Mali's questions but equally as happy to brag on her and her good ideas. "I do know some pretty secretive people," he teased lightly, brightness returning to his face as well. "But I believe in you. If you think you can stand being in that place I think you'd be a grand liaison for the cause." Remus smiled then, happy to hear Eoin liked him well enough and thinking Mali might just like him well enough, too.

Remus' feigned outrage only egged on her laughter. Mister Lupin was absolutely right, he was hysterical but she'd never let him know that. She only grinned and rolled her eyes at his retort. It was nice to see him enjoying himself. His wife's death must have been very hard for him to cope with and although he didn't show it much he always seemed just a little sad around the edges. Like the impact of the loss was lurking just below the surface, looking to drag him down while no one was looking but he seemed genuinely happy, laughing and enjoying himself during their little picnic. Mali was glad, Mister Lupin was too good of a friend to her, she didn't want to see him sad.
The sparks were a bit startling, and Mali squeaked her surprise before laughing again. She laughed easily around him, just like with Theo. Everything seemed a bit funnier. Grass seemed greener too, all that jazz. Mali was a perceptive person, one would think she'd realize what was happening but she remained blissfully (maybe a bit willfully) unaware of what was blooming in her chest and just enjoyed her time with him. He was very impressive, good at magic and good at teaching. "D'you think you can deplete your magic?" He almost made it sound like it was an exhaustible resource. At the mention of NEWTs, she gave a dismissive one shouldered shrug. "I didn't really practice for them, but I know what you're saying." Back then, when she was younger and a little more bright eyed, she embraced a philosophy of 'what happens will happen' and didn't waste much time with studying.
For half a second, Mali felt like she should be taking down notes. He was so good at explaining things that she could only imagine how interesting and engaging his classes must've been like. Everything about Mister Lupin was fascinating, from his wandless magic to his monthly transformation and life as a werewolf. For someone who'd been handed such a terrible hand in life, he kept a good attitude about it. "S'amazing to me that magic can regrow whole limbs but it can't fix bad vision. You'd think someone would've invented a potion for that by now." The Wizarding World was a bit backwards sometimes, stuck in the past. They favored quills and wore glasses when the rest of the world embraced pens and corrective eye surgery. "S'that why you carry it around with you all the time?" The second time they met the chocolate was useful, but it was still a bit off. "Not a bad thing to have on hand, though. Everything's better with chocolate."
She tilted her head thoughtfully, seriously considering her favorite scent. It was kind of silly and her gaze shifted down shyly "I think mine's actually the clean, clinical smell of wound cleaning potion. It's a bit weird, but the whole hospital smells like it and Healing is my favorite thing to do." It reminded her of the antiseptic smell of muggle hospitals, too. But Healing was her passion and she enjoyed putting people back together, alleviating their pain and improving their day. "I missed it while I was away from work, and I think I like it even better now. I feel like Healing sort've helps make up for the bad things that Theo and I did." She nearly flinched internally at Theo's name, even thought she was the one who spoke it. Getting to know Mister Lupin, learning the little details about him almost felt like she was doing something wrong without him around.
And then Mali ruined everything. She asked a question that shouldn't have been asked and it shattered the casual, happy mood from before. Remus looked down at his lap and her insides twisted uncomfortably. She moved from her spot across from Mister Lupin to take up the space next to him. "Sorry." Mali mumbled and leaned into him, reaching an arm around to give him a comforting squeeze. "I should've known that before I even asked." When people were sad, Mali felt like they needed to feel a physical closeness. She was with him in every sense of the word. She even laid her head on his shoulder briefly before their conversation changed direction. That might've been more for her than it was for him.
"How'd that whole thing come about, anyway?" Remus was the king of knowing secretive people. A whole organization operating under the table. There was a brief hiccup in their picnic due to her thoughtless question, but Remus' vote of confidence meant a lot to her and she was back to smiling in no time.

Remus was on a roll. He hadn't felt this good in weeks. Mali was indulging him his two favorite things - making people laugh, and making them think. His sense of humor wasn't nearly as in-your-face as his desire to turn every waking moment into a teaching moment, however. If Mali kept asking him questions, he would go all day. Seriously. She certainly didn't seem to mind, though, at least not yet. Add that to the lengthening list of things he liked about Mali - her curiosity. Remus was adamant in his position that if only everyone asked so many questions, the world might just become a more understanding place. "No, I don't think so," he said, shaking his head. "I don't think we as wizards know, or will ever know, for sure what exactly magic is. I think of it like...blood, I guess. A life-force. It's a part of you like any other that's constantly replenishing itself." He shrugged. Remus liked reading about magical theory, but to him, thousands of years of magical study had proven but one thing - magic was a damned difficult thing to pin down and study. He turned his head and smiled at Mali's noncommittal agreement. "I didn't either, as much as I probably should have. By that age I was far more concerned with other things. Making sure my friends studied at all - ever - primarily." And there was number three on Remus' list of favorite things to do - reminisce.
"Magic is a fickle thing," he agreed with a nod. He certainly wished he could down a potion to make his vision better. Glasses would make his face look positively old and Remus wasn't quite ready for that reality yet. "Maybe that's something for you and Eoin to work on as well, hey? Help out your aging friends," he grinned. Then Mali asked his absolute favorite question of the day, and he was chuckling again. "That, and I'm a firm believer that chocolate is the world's best medicine. Seriously. I have a book about it, if you want to borrow it." He was being silly...sort of...he did have the book; but he also just really liked having chocolate accessible at all times.
Mali certainly had an interesting favorite smell. Remus tilted his head in curiosity at her as she went on with a very apt explanation of why. "That's not weird, that's perfect." He smiled. "It's absolutely amazing you've found something you love to do so much at such a young age, Mali, really. You've got a passion and it's written all over you." He nodded in a more solemn understanding of the other half of her musings. He felt he knew exactly what she was seeking, having been there himself. "You're a helper. It's what you've been doing from the beginning."
There was a pause in their lighthearted gloating on one another as Mali asked a question that, inevitably, almost always arose when Remus let anyone new into his life. He would never blame them for their curiosity; his shame in his condition was just so deep seated he doubted the discomfort of exposing anything about it would ever go away completely.
Mali certainly made up for it. Not only did she apologize, she physically moved in to make sure he was okay. Not a lot of people were touchy-feely with Remus, on good days or bad days. He supposed he just gave off that vibe, in some way or another. In reality, he liked closeness with people - when he trusted them. Some of his favorite things in the world were weekend morning snuggles in bed with the twins. He opened to Mali snuggling into him now, leaning slightly against her too. "It's okay. It's an honest question. It if helps people be less afraid, I would answer them all day."
With that response, something was firmly established between he and Mali, at least in Remus' eyes. He didn't share personal information as a principle, unless he was using it as a bargaining chip to get something else - or unless he planned on keeping that person around as a permanent fixture in his life. Asking about his condition was one thing, but when Mali piped up about his grand troupe of secretive people, Remus had a decision to make. That information involved people other than him. He made the decision rather quickly - he trusted Mali now, to keep their secrets and to stick around. "Doing what's right is not always doing what's legal," he said. "I think you can see that very clearly with what is going on right now. It's always been the same way, pretty much - and people notice. It was all just a matter of finding those people." He still had to be vague, of course. In their world, secrets were just as easily forced as they were spilled.
