Alex didn’t really know why she was here. Why she had spent the last thirty minutes prowling around Godric’s Hollow trying to make up her mind. She shouldn’t care. She didn’t care. Lupin was a werewolf. A monster. End of story. So why did the idea of him being put down make her stomach turn? She hadn’t been able to explain it to herself, let alone her father. He thought she was going soft. Maybe he was right. At the end of the day, Lupin was just like the monsters that had killed her mother. So why was she standing in his sleepy little village pacing a hole through the cobblestones?
She turned down Lupin’s street, hands jammed in jacket pockets and brow tightly furrowed, just in time to see the two small Lupin twins being led out of the house by an older woman whose red hair was showing hints of grey. The trio turned down the street without even noticing Alex. But the sight of five-year-old Lily James happily prattling away stabbed Alex straight in the gut. She couldn’t go along with this. She couldn’t let her father destroy another little girl. Before she knew it, she was down the street and banging on the door. “Come on, come on, come on,” she muttered as she waited for the door to open. He had to be home if someone had just picked up his kids. But the seconds ticking by were taking far too long for Alex’s liking. She couldn’t be seen standing here. Not with her job and Lupin’s condition. She pounded her fist against the door again, putting her head near the wood to listen for footsteps. “Open the damn door, Lupin!”
No sooner were the words out of her mouth than the door creaked inward. Alex didn’t even bother waiting. She pushed it open the rest of the way and brushed past Lupin into the house. “We need to talk. Now.” Her steely tone left no room for argument. She turned on her heel, running a nervous hand through her hair as Lupin shut the door. She didn’t know why she was doing this. She should be here with a knife in her hand, not a warning. But he had saved her life back in the alley in October. Maybe that was it. She was just rebalancing the scales. Nothing more. And yet it felt like just standing here was a betrayal of her father. Of everything he had taught her to stand for. She shouldn’t be here. Why was she here? Because Lily James was almost six, damn it. Because her mother had been slaughtered and her father had stayed. Alex crossed her arms firmly over her chest just in case her hands were shaking as badly as it felt like. “My father's going to try to kill you.” The words were blurted out as if they were burning a hole in her mouth. There. It was done. Debt squared. She was off the hook. So why was her stomach still twisted up in agonizing knots?
