Mali felt confused and unsettled because internally everything was an uproar. Her heart was being tugged in two different directions, sometimes it felt like it was being tugged in the same direction in two places but whatever it was, it wasn't normal. It didn't feel right and she responded to it by getting restless and clingy. The witch had practically glued herself to Theo over the past few days. She wanted to be with him, to be touching him almost constantly. If she kept him close, at the very forefront of her mind, she would remember where her heart needed to be. Theo was home. And they were at his home. Ever since her months on house arrest she couldn't spend too much time in her own home without going a little stir crazy and needing to get out, maybe that helped contribute to whatever was going on with her. With the Wolfsbane potion brewing and the side cover up business, Eoin and Mali had spent a lot of time bent over the cauldron in their living room. Even with it's festive lights and too big tree it started to feel like a prison cell. There were occasional excursions to play in the snow with Theo and drink butterbeer with Mister Lupin but it wasn't enough. She needed to spend a night away. The night was going well enough, she was curled up with Theo, which was one of her most favorite places to be. He was comfortable and solid, a good reminder of the positive things that came out of such terrible experiences. She should feel content with her arms securely around his middle and face buried in his chest, listening to the mismatched rhythm of his heart against his breathing but she just felt.. restless. Ill tempered, maybe. Mali could be her own worst enemy at times, as blissful as this was she felt quarrelsome. Like she had to push his buttons, get some sort of rise out of him to test his feelings. "I don't understand," she murmured, shifting and resettling against Theo. "Why you don't want to work with me." It was a touchy subject. She was about to change positions within St. Mungos and there had already been a heated discussion or two over the matter. Mali knew that Theo didn't like the idea but she felt like it was her best chance to help the furrier citizens of the wizarding world. Theo Ashland

Theo didn't really mind Mali's recent clingy habits, if it was keeping her close to him. Even when they argued, at least she stayed with him. There was a mighty unsettling feeling growing in Theo's chest; at this point he honestly could not tell if he was just being paranoid or not, but having Mali constantly tucked up under his arm was reassuring all the same. Obviously she wanted to be with him if she was there all the time, right?
Theo tried hard to convince himself of that, to focus on the good feelings he got from Mali and none of the bad vibes. All of the warmth and light and none of the suspicion. This involved lots of quiet cuddles, too many words spoken between them inevitably leading to a sour mood. Not that Theo minded that, either. There was one thing Mali was stuck on talking about recently that he just couldn't bring himself to accept.
On some level, Theo felt guilty for not being exactly thrilled with Mali's career change. Wasn't it a good thing, a chance for them to be even closer, even at work? Mostly, though, Theo felt worried. He remembered the situation at the Eye and all of the other times Mali lost her cool in an emergency. It wasn't even that he didn't think she was capable. There had been plenty of times when Mali kept a level head even when he couldn't. But those times were unpredictable at best. Mali worked best when she had time to assess the situation in front of her. Theo knew that, and he knew Mali knew it, too. So why even do this?
Theo couldn't answer that question and he didn't think Mali wanted to answer it. She said she just thought it would be easier to help the werewolves this way. Theo couldn't comprehend that, couldn't really understand why she needed to do this when she was already doing so much. To him, taking on this position that she wasn't cut out for almost seemed like it might hurt her cause instead of help.
He didn't want to say any of this to her. He already had, several times, to no avail. Now he just wanted to cuddle and be warm and just get through it like they got through everything else. He had no doubts that they would, somehow...but arguing about it was not that way. He barely heard Mali as she spoke into his chest. Her words pulled a deep sigh from him. "Mali, that's not even it. I've told you. I just think it's too dangerous."

Mali loved to lay quietly with Theo, curled up with her head on his chest. She could listen to him just be, breathe and just exist as the unbelievably wonderful person that she was almost sure she wanted to spend the entire rest of her life with. Almost... Occasionally she could see someone else in her future, if only vaguely. She and Mister Lupin had bonded in the time that she and Theo had been forced apart. They owed debts to each other that neither could fully repay and that created something between people. Mali didn't love Mister Lupin in the way that she loved Theo but she did care about him, maybe even loved him in a different sense of the word. It was so confusing.
She didn't like to feel confused. It made her feel insecure, and the insecurity seeped into everything and poisoned other aspects of her life. Theo sighed, she heard the deep and slow breath in his lungs and it made her flinch. It sounded disappointed, exasperated. Why was she pushing this, poking at the slumbering troll? Mali didn't want to fight with him, did she? It was almost a compulsion. A test. Her insecurity and confusion made it so. She lifted her head to look at Theo, face set in defiance. "That doesn't even make any sense, Theo." It did, and deep down she knew it. Deep, deep down. Her intentions were good, though, and that would help succeed. Good intentions and heart were all she had, really.
The witch pulled away from him to sit up. "If it's too dangerous then you shouldn't do it either. You should change positions." Mali didn't truly want him to do that, his ability as a Medi-Wizard was something she found very attractive. It fit him so well. "I'm just as capable as you are, you know." There was a little distance between them when she sat up, physically and emotionally and Mali, who was being torn in two different directions, tried to solve it by reaching out for his hand expectantly. It wasn't a lie that she was just as capable as he was, her capability just existed in different ways. While Theo was capable of working in chaos to piece people back together enough to get them to the hospital, Mali was capable of healing charms and spells that required finesse. Neither was more skilled than the other, their skills complimented each other quite well. She couldn't see that right now, all she could comprehend was that Theo didn't think that she could do what he did, maybe he thought he was better than her.

A lot of things about Theo didn't really make sense, he knew this and accepted it if not exactly worked on it - but he knew he was being perfectly clear now. What could possibly be nonsensical about wanting to protect his girlfriend from a dangerous job? "How?" Theo looked down at her and furrowed his eyebrows in confusion and weariness, the look deepening when she sat up and pulled away. It felt like he was pushing her away, with this. But if Mali was as stubborn as a mule, Theo was as stubborn as an ox. He felt like he was right, objectively right, and it was next to impossible to convince him otherwise.
Just like it would be next to impossible to convince him to leave his job. At that, Theo sat up too, crossing his arms over his chest. "Now, that doesn't make any sense. I've been doing this for years. I'm good at it, just like you're good at what you've been doing." Any argument Theo had besides wanting to keep her safe was full of holes. There was no logic to the fierce protectiveness he felt over Mali, but of course, he couldn't see that. It all made perfect sense to him, a man of simple wants and needs. He loved the girl, and wanted to keep her around as long as possible. Theo cracked just a tiny bit as he thought about this for the thousandth time since this argument began, even managing a tiny grin when she held her hand out to him. Even if they were mad, they had to be close - that's just how they worked. And they did work, beautifully, together as a pair. This was just another thing to get through, in Theo's mind. He took Mali's hand and worked off nervous energy by playing with her fingers. "You're more capable than me, honestly. You're the better Healer - don't even try to argue that. But, babe...don't you remember what happened at the Eye over the summer? You need a controlled environment. There's nothing wrong with that."

"What do you mean how? How can it possibly make sense!?" She asked, tone sharpened with irritation and exasperation. "How can it be safe for you, and not for me!? That. Doesn't. Make. Sense!" Her anger was irrational and she knew it, but as sweet as Mali was sometimes she just felt sour and quarrelsome. As the person she felt most comfortable with, Theo was going to bear the brunt of it. She closed her eyes, pinching the bridge of her nose as she worked to soften her demeanor and relax. With a deep, calming breath that came out as more of a sigh, Mali felt a tiny bit better when she opened her eyes again. Her shoulders relaxed and voice was milder. "I don't understand, we could see each other more. You wouldn't have to come to the spell damage unit to see me at work." And she wouldn't be trapped up there, maybe a little part of this new idea was selfish.
Now it was time for Theo to claim she wasn't making sense. She huffed and rolled her eyes. "If I'm good at what I'm doing, I can be good at what you're doing. It's almost the same thing." Sort've. For half a second she thought he wouldn't take her hand, his arms were crossed and the look on his face gave her little feelings of guilt but most of that eased away with his grin. When Theo took her hand, Mali moved to climb into his lap, pulling his arms around her as she leaned her back against him. Maybe the closeness would wipe away all her agitated feelings, he was certainly warm and this way he could still have her fingers and she wouldn't have to look at the less pleasant expressions on his face.
Mali stayed quiet when he said she was the better Healer. She was enamored with Theo's ability to heal people. From his actual skill to his bedside manner, all of it. She would tell people that, too. But admitting that would give more power to his argument against her changing positions. When he brought up the Eye, though... That was a low blow. Mali sat up again and twisted around to pull away and face him, an incredulous and angry look written across her face. "So I'm good, but only under certain conditions. Thanks, that's a brilliant thing to say. Makes me feel loads better." Mali stood up, leaving Theo all together. She didn't want to be close to him anymore, his words actually stung very uncomfortably. She may have been overly sensitive but she met his poorly thought out statement with equally poorly thought out sarcasm.
"You know," Mali started, whipping back around to face him while brandishing an accusing finger. "That's really unfair of you. The Eye was different, and since then I've done a lot. I patched up Mister Lupin several times, sometimes without magic. I did that, not you. I kept my head and healed him." Mostly, there was a few moments of panic after the eclipse, but they'd all made it through. Knowing that, Mali sank back down on the edge of the bed again, looking defeated and feeling sick to her stomach. "You're really important to me, your vote of confidence is one of the only ones that matter and you won't give me that." She dropped her head into her hands with a weary sigh. "I know I can do this, why don't you?"

Theo liked making Mali laugh, making her whisper sweetly, liked reducing her to nothing at all but a puddle of happy cuddles. He didn't like making her yell, or speak with daggers in her voice. Her words pricked at him. Even back in the day, what felt like prehistorical times now, when they had a strong dislike for one another - she didn't speak to him like that. "We're different people, Mali." Theo frowned, watching her try to calm herself - normally his job, but all he was doing was irritating her. He didn't know if he should even keep talking to her like this, much less try to touch her. "I would like that," he nodded. They could agree on that, always, more time together was always a good thing. "But I'm worried about the times when I can't see you. Different calls, different shifts. I can't make sure you're safe if I'm not with you."
They seemed to be heading in a sort of good direction. Still annoyed, but they couldn't keep their hands off each other for long. Theo wanted to argue - he didn't think their two types of healing were the same thing at all - but those hands won out. Mali crawled into his lap and his arms went easily around her, holding her to him and holding her hands. He just grunted his remaining dissatisfaction and concentrated on their silent warmth.
He was really trying here. When he did speak, he tried to frame it in a way that favored her. But there were some things he just couldn't budge on - and those were the very things that sent Mali reeling away from him. He was frowning again by the time she was on her feet. "That's not what I said," he grumbled, staring at her back and crossing his arms again. "I couldn't do what you do. If I can't fix something within an hour, I'm all out of ideas. Same thing. You think long - in my job, you have to think fast."
Mali was stuck on what he said. She whipped back around on him and let him know it, trying to prove him wrong. Theo shook his head at her and sighed. "I know you have. You're brilliant. But you never know what's going to happen with this job, that's the thing - it could be a lot more Mister Lupins, or it could be a lot more Eyes. Do you really want to deal with that every day?" Theo watched her all along, eyes never leaving her as she sat back down on the bed. She looked so sad and it absolutely killed him - but he'd rather have her sad, than dead. "Because you're important to me, and I don't even want to risk losing you. Why can't you just stay where you are? You can help plenty of people there, too."

Make sure she was safe? Somehow, this made it feel less like a relationship and more like... something else. The fact she could always depend on him, the fact he made her feel secure were just a few of her favorite things about him but to have it thrown in her face like that made Mali angry. "You're not my father." Although her dads would probably stand behind Theo, nodding along to everything he was saying if given the chance. "It's not your job to keep me safe. You're my boyfriend. We're s'posed to be a partnership, not something where you have to babysit me." If Mali wasn't so clouded with anger and stubborness, she would see what he was trying to do and would have found it sweet but poor Theo was going about it all wrong. Instead of making her feel like he cared, he was making her feel like he didn't trust her to take care of herself. That he thought so little of her abilities.
For a tender, quiet moment it looked like they could get through this just fine. They didn't talk, Theo played with her hands and she enjoyed the embrace. They were a whirlwind, going from one extreme to the other in a matter of minutes. All the angry words only seconds ago was forgiven thanks to a little bit of warmth and the steady sound of Theo's breathing as she rested back against him. Until, of course, the conversation started again. It seemed like every time the tall man troll opened his mouth he was sticking his foot in it. They weren't necessarily unkind at face value but she took great offense to what they possibly implied. She was only good sometimes, don't you remember the eye? You have to think fast.
"So you think I'm slow, then?" All of her insecurities were pouring out for him to see. Mali knew she wasn't anything spectacular with most magic, but she didn't like to be reminded of it. She also knew that she was no Ravenclaw and would never be on that level, but to be slow? Mali wanted to be better at magic, she wanted to be smarter. Theo deserved someone who was better and smarter, just like him. She might have been standing just a foot or two physically from Theo, but she was miles away from him. There had never been so much space between the two. Not even when they were looking for space.
The word 'brilliant' struck a nerve in exactly the wrong way. She snapped, shaking her head and waving it off. "Shut up! You just called me slow, you don't get to try and placate me with words like 'Brilliant'. Make up your mind, Theo! I'm either 'brilliant' in which case you have no reason to be angry, or I'm slow. Why are you even with me then if I'm so stupid!? Can't you find someone more on your intellectual level!?" There was a comment on the tip of her tongue, something about trolls and their terrible IQs but Mali just wasn't cruel enough to say it out loud. This was all stress, of course. Need and stress. She needed to reach more people, she was worried about the current condition of the wizarding world and the political climate. Deep down she knew that Theo didn't think she was stupid, she knew that he loved her, and she knew that he was probably the sweetest and most genuine man she'd ever met but acknowledging any of that would acknowledge that he had a point.
And he couldn't have a point. She planned this out, Remus thought it was clever. Mali was so sure she could do this, and she practically just begged Theo for his confidence (without actually saying it) and he still couldn't give it to her. He wanted her to stay in the spell damage unit. There was a very painful and hollow feeling in her chest and she was starting to crumble. Mali knew when the conversation started that she would end up in tears, but she fought against them valiantly 'til the urge to cry far was overwhelming. His distinct lack of confidence, even when asked, was the last straw. Tears ran down her cheeks as she stood up again and looked around for her boots. "I don't believe you right now." she told him, sniffling and voice cracking with tears. Crying made her feel like such a little girl, something she firmly asserted that she wasn't minutes ago and they only frustrated her. "You think I'm stupid, you don't think I can take care of myself. You can't even support me when I'm practically asking for you to do it. I don't--- I can't be here right now. I need to go home."

"It is my job," Theo argued back without a thought, skipping over parts of what Mali said to get to the parts he wanted to disagree with (excellent communication skills, this one). "Yes, we are partners. That's what partners do, watch each other's backs. Call each other out on bad ideas." Theo had maybe a bit of a convoluted idea of what a partnership was, at least in this context. Because he was scared - just flat-out scared, of what could happen to Mali if she did this - he was again ignoring what made sense in favor of what he could argue half a point about. He was ignoring the fact that, in most all forms of partnership, partners kept each other safe with their support (having each other's backs, he even said it, the thick sod), and not their constant nagging and dissent.
You see, just...Theo really hated being wrong. Really, really hated it. So even if, say, halfway through an argument he maybe realized he was being a little dumb...he would never admit it. Especially not if the other person kept going on. Especially not if they started putting words in his mouth. "I didn't say that!" Theo threw his hands in the air with exasperation, letting go of Mali. Now he was more annoyed than anything. Apparently he couldn't say anything right, even if it was nice. Theo groaned and started running a hand through his hair, pulling at the roots like he did when he was nervous or stressed. "Merlin, Mali. I don't think you're bloody stupid, I didn't say that. Are you just going to keep putting words in my mouth? Because this is pointless." Around the same time Theo voiced this opinion, Mali was questioning why he was even with her. The question gave Theo pause, and he blinked at her, furrowing his brow. She didn't have to go there, to that level. Theo didn't like that level. The thought of not being with Mali was devastating, even if he was angry with her right now. "That's ridiculous. That's stupid."
Theo was mumbling at this point, too angry to speak, but he couldn't stay silent liked he probably needed to. Mali had a look on her face like she was about to lose it, and sure enough, the tears came. She was up as soon as they started to spill, rooting around for her boots. She was going to leave. Theo got to his feet, too, but he didn't know with what intention. Half of him wanted to wrap her up, stop the tears, and forget about it for a little while. That was a pretty hefty half of him, but the other half of him was stuck on their argument - and every time, Theo's cursed stubbornness won out. He crossed his arms over his chest and watched her, tuning out her saying the same things over and over again. There was no arguing that Mali wasn't stubborn, too. "Whatever. Come back when you actually want to listen to me."

"You're not watching my back!" Mali retorted, her voice sharp and and shrill with exasperation. "You're not! You're trying to babysit me! I don't need a babysitter, I need a boyfriend who actually believes in me and what I can do!" That. That was their problem. Theo could worry all he liked, it was kind of endearing and very sweet when it didn't mean an argument but he had to set aside his anxiety to support her, to make her feel like he really did have her back. Right now she felt so utterly alone. No one believed in her, except for Remus. He made her feel like an equal, like she was clever enough and talented enough to do anything while Theo made her feel like a bloody child who wasn't capable of taking care of themselves.
He didn't say that, he just implied it. Like he implied that she was slow, but there he was arguing against that too. Theo wasn't holding her anymore, and Mali was very sensitive to things like rejection. His embrace was the last little thing that was holding her together and now it was gone, intensifying a feeling of lonely isolation. "You don't have to say it!" It was useless to try and reason with her now, she was clouded with anger and the hollow ache took on a jagged edge. She was stupid. This was stupid, all of it was stupid but she couldn't stop. Mali so desperately needed Theo's support that the lack of it devastated her in such a way that she couldn't properly articulate, so she articulated other things. Like her insecurities, but she formed them in accusations. He called her stupid. "Sorry I couldn't think fast enough to come up with something else to say that would meet your bloody standards!"
Her boots had somehow migrated underneath Theo's bed, having been kicked there at some point that night and Mali pulled them hastily on, not even bothering to hide her tears anymore. She wiped at her cheeks, annoyed with her lack of control over her emotions. No one could win this argument, even if someone was technically right. They were distant, they were hurting. Theo was supposed to stop her from leaving, he was supposed to make everything better like he always did. Counterproductive to her argument but it's how they always were. When he didn't, Mali broke. He was going to let her leave, even had the audacity to throw in some dismissive comment. She looked at him, tear stained face and all. "Sod off."
Screw the jacket, she had to get out. Mali turned with a whip of dark hair and she was one with the slamming of two doors and one loud crack of disapparation.
