Mali had often thought that Theo was absolutely unbelievable, but never in this sense of the word. He was being irrational and stubborn and just.... Just. The crueler parts of Mali thought that if anything, he was worried that she would be better at Mediwizardry than he was, after all she was a Specialist. She didn't get that position by being mediocre with healing magic and her bedside manner and patient advocacy were top notch. Mali might have trouble with a lot of things, but healing wasn't one of them. There was a small twinge in the pit of her stomach that told her this was wrong, that no matter how angry she was with Theo that she should have stayed with him or gone home to Eoin but despite all this, she popped back into being on a street in Godric's Hollow and gave herself a once over, a little gun shy after her latest splinching incident. Once it was confirmed that she was intact with ten fingers and ten toes and no new bleeding wounds she started the very cold walk to the charming Victorian home that sat on the edge of the village. She wasn't prepared for any night time excursions (although it wasn't too late, almost reasonable) and had left Theo's in such a huff that she had only barely stopped to stomp her boots back on, leaving her coat, scarf and hat behind. Remus' doorstep was becoming a very familiar place, and the moment she stepped foot on it the little guilty twinge doubled up it's protest but it was overshadowed by something else, a small pleasant feeling that started in her chest. Mali's face was red and stained with tears, freshly fallen snow decorated long dark locks and her lips were pressed into a thin, unhappy line. The witch stood there, shivering like a leaf and staring at a spot on the step, willing herself not to burst into tears. She sniffled and then stiffened her grip on her composure. When Remus appeared in the doorway her heart gave a single confusing thump. The scowl on Mali's faced eased and she didn't say anything for a long second. There was never any thought to what she would do or say once she got here, just that she needed someone to help take the sting out of both Theo's words and her own. "Hey. Are you busy?" Oh, she was a selfish being. Yell at Theo, start an argument with him and then run off to Mister Lupin and ruin his night as well. Although Mali took care of people all the time, maybe it was okay to let them take care of her sometimes too. ______________________ Takes place after Quarrelsome Remus Lupin

Remus was doing a fairly decent job of not letting himself be alone, especially in his home - but these odd evening hours always brought him trouble. After he put the twins to bed, what was he to do? He couldn't deny that he'd been having trouble sleeping, as well. Half the time he didn't even sleep in his bedroom, opting for one of the spares or the living room couch instead. That's where he was tonight, whiling away the hours with a glass of whiskey until he was tired enough to slump over into the cushions. Tonight he also distracted himself with a warm fire in the hearth and a book, something dry and dull about the nuances of transfiguration, hoping it would all speed the progress along. At the very least, it all meant he wouldn't have to think about anything else.
That is, until, he heard the noises of arrival on his front porch. At this hour, such noises couldn't appropriately be ignored. Someone probably needed him for something or another, and being needed was certainly better than sitting around waiting for sleep. Remus pulled himself out of the couch cushions and went to the door. When he pulled it open, he found Mali, red-faced and shivering something fierce. She looked so incredibly down that Remus acted on instinct alone (mostly instinct...those instincts were flavored with something different recently), reaching out and pulling her inside. She was cold to the touch, and Remus ran his hands up her arms. "Merlin, you're freezing. Come here."
He was most definitely needed now, and Remus was taking full advantage of the fact. He took Mali's cold hand and led her into his living room, situating her close to the fire. He stayed next to her, crossing his arms over his chest and looking down at her with deep concern. "What happened?" She was pretty obviously in some sort of trouble - and she felt safe enough to come here, of all places. Remus wasn't blind to that fact. Mali took care of him and he took care of Mali, it was a little unspoken game of back-and-forth they both played along with. Over the past few weeks, Remus felt the growing awareness that it was becoming more than just a game, more than just the returning of a favor. Everything in his life was confusing right now, not in the least just his feelings for this young woman who showed him such kindness. Such attention. Something about her being here now, trusting and vulnerable, felt like the solidification of something Remus couldn't quite acknowledge.

It was certainly nice to be needed. Maybe that was the appeal of Mister Lupin? He was kind too, and that had a lot to do with her fondness for him but there was something more. Theo didn't really need her as much now that things were going back to normal. He was settling in at work, he no longer carried a deep and dark secret and if anything, she needed him back in the farmhouse. But Mister Lupin? He was lonely, he needed help stumbling through the grief of losing his wife and lucky for them, Mali was right there to lend a hand most times. This time, however, she needed him and he was willing to oblige, ushering her out of the cold and into a house filled with all different sorts of warmth. Physical, from the fire and emotional from the man and his love for his children.
Under normal circumstances she might quip about how she hadn't quite turned into a Malicicle yet, but she was too deflated. Joking was wrong when she felt so miserable and...regretful inside. She and her beloved Theo were fighting, how could she have let it get to the point that she was showing up on other people's doorsteps? Remus did help ease some of that rotten feeling and her skin felt tingly warm under his touch. Into the living room they went, the last time she was here Mali was bleeding and it looked better without all the red. Her thoughts wandered briefly back to that day, how he healed her. He was well on his way to being a Healer himself! One could hardly see the scars and Mali sort've liked them, they meant something. The fire was nice and her shivering subsided pretty quickly, allowing her to unfold a bit.
Something about sitting there and Mister Lupin's concern felt intimate. Maybe it was more the reason behind her visit that made it that way, but she wasn't really sure that she minded it. His concern was actually endearing and should make her feel a bit sheepish, all of this because she had a fight with her boyfriend over silly pride but Remus was easy to be vulnerable and open with. "Theo and I got into an argument." Talking about it was uncomfortable, stirred up barely forgotten irritation and self consciousness. "He thinks I'm incompetent." She couldn't be. Didn't she come through when it really counted? It wasn't Theo who ran out to drag Mister Lupin off a muggle street when he'd gotten into a duel with a Death Eater. Mali was clearly distressed by what she thought that Theo thought, cold fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt and gaze fixed on her own lap. "I told you I moved to Medi-Witch, haven't I? He doesn't think I can do it and it made me angry and we shouted at each other." Mali wore her emotions on her sleeve, but this.. she hesitated for a moment, looking up at Mister Lupin and chewing on her lower lip before she cautiously decided to explain further. "So I left. And I don't know why I came here, exactly. It just felt like the right thing to do, so here I am. I'm sorry if I've interrupted anything, you just seemed like where I should go."

Remus had the same quick flashback as Mali as the pair of them once again ended up on his living room couch - inspiring his closer scrutiny of the woman. She didn't look hurt, she certainly wasn't bleeding like she had been that day. Given their short yet violent past, it made sense for Remus' utmost concern to be with Mali's physical well-being. And it was probably the same for him - one could only bleed a certain number of times on a person's floor before it sort of just became expected...As far as Mali's emotional well-being, though...well. Remus cared a lot about that, too, but sometimes felt like he shouldn't. She had other people that were supposed to take care of that for her.
People that, apparently, liked to argue with her. Since she'd stopped shivering so much in front of the fire, Remus could stop worrying so much about her freezing to death and start worrying more about what that meant. An argument. Mali had a fight with her boyfriend, and the first person she thought to seek out afterward was him. It wasn't completely outlandish to Remus - people came to him for advice on a lot of things. Comfort, less so...but taking just the slightest hints - the way she spoke and the way she looked up at him - Remus let himself believe that's why she was here. She just needed to take the edge off, somehow. He was vaguely aware that he was letting what he needed influence what he thought she needed. But...she had come here, after all.
Thus Remus was both fully distracted by and fully concentrated on Mali. He tried to focus on her words rather than her fidgeting hands or the frown lines around her mouth. Her words made it worse, adding anger to the mix. "What?" Mali, incompetent - Remus himself was living proof of how foolish a statement that was. Eventually, he just had to reach over and take one of her hands - still very cold - in his, trying to quell some of these things (on both sides) making it so hard to focus. Mali was upset and she needed him to make it better and his being distracted and angry wouldn't help either of them. He nodded, watching her words form on her lips and not at all paying attention to his gradual leaning toward her. Just the words.
Then those words became focused on him. 'You just seemed like where I should go' - it hit Remus right in the gut, but not at all unpleasantly. Like the world's most pleasant sucker punch, warmth and butterflies. He shifted against the cushions, still holding Mali's hand, trying to pass on that warmth. Hoping she could feel it, too - because to be perfectly honest, Remus was starting to feel pretty damn good right now, despite the circumstance. "Don't worry about me." He smiled slightly at her. "You know he's wrong, right? You know you're not incompetent. You're brilliant. Maybe you needed to come here to remind yourself of what you're capable of." He was feeling emboldened, too. Overly warm. He pulled Mali's hand to him, still in his, and used her finger to tap against his chest, one of many points she'd mended with her competency and kindness.

Everything was clashing. She was cold, but the house was warm. There was a pesky little feeling, first noticed during their cold weather picnic, that smacked hard against other feelings of guilt and wrongness. She shouldn't be going from a fight with her boyfriend to the home of another man, one that she knew that she was developing some sort of feelings for but Theo's lack of confidence in her hurt. Mali had experienced lots of different sorts of pain in the past few months, the pain of grief and loss, the pain of distance, and even the pain of unforgivable magic but nothing hurt the same as this. Theo was everything to her and--well, almost everything-- and to feel like he thought so little of her capability was devastating. It didn't match curses in intensity in the moment, but it wasn't something that could be eased with the waving of a wand.
But it could, apparently, be eased with a few words from the right person. His apparent outrage at what Theo didn't really say but implied was validating and eased the sting of the fight just enough. He even took her hand, warming it in his. The pesky feeling from before stirred and intensified, overshadowing any trace of guilt because their hands together felt right and she had to resist her initial urge to lace their fingers together and solidify the bond.
His reassurance was enough to tug the corners of her frown up into the faintest smile. Mali had much respect and adoration for Remus, there wasn't a wizard alive that she thought better than him and his encouragement felt as good as their closeness, and they were pretty close. Mali felt herself being drawn into him like a magnet, the very same pull that had brought her to his doorstep and as wrong as it was there was no use fighting against it.
Remus even used words like 'Brilliant' which drew her in even more. She didn't consider herself brilliant very often but like everything about the moment, the words felt good. It was enough to silence any murmurs in the back of her mind about Theo. This wasn't about Theo, not when Remus brought their hands to his chest, it was all about them. The tapping rendered his momentarily speechless but her lips parted like she meant to say something, she just wasn't sure what. Eventually she settled on repaying his compliment from before "You're brilliant, too. You're practically on your way to becoming a healer. I've got almost no scars, thanks to you."
Mali pulled her hand away from him to trace through along one of the scars her healing had left through his shirt. "I sort've like scars, though. They're stories, you've got chapters upon chapters written on your skin. I'd like to know them sometime."

Remus finally managed to pull a smile, tiny and faint, from Mali - and that was the very moment he knew he was done for. The warmth from the fire and the warmth from his guest on the couch and the warmth from something else entirely, spreading in his chest like a lightning flash, combined and left him feeling like a schoolboy with a crush. Their little game of back and forth was bound to come to this moment, wasn't it? No one else had shown up for Remus in his grief in the way Mali had, and it was entirely too easy for him to let that all go to his head, assigning big meanings to little actions.
Remus found himself entirely focused on that smile, gaze lingering on Mali's lips even as they moved to form around words. He was smiling, too. "I think I'll leave the healing to you. I kind of like having you on call." They could sit here and tell each other how great they thought the other was all night, but Remus didn't think that's all Mali wanted from him. If she only wanted his words, she could have written him. Instead, she was seated on his couch, running her fingers over his chest and leaning ever so closer with each word.
And those words, they were going straight to Remus' head. She was saying everything he wanted to say. She wanted to know his scars, wanted to know his story - the very same thought that had been growing in the back of Remus' mind for weeks, in all honesty. He wanted to know Mali. She mentioned having almost no scars...Remus' hand slipped down to her side, enveloping the spot where he'd tried his best to heal her. He could feel bits of raised skin through her clothes. Remus stared at the spot for a moment before his gaze inevitably went back to Mali's lips, finding himself increasingly unable to stop thinking about them. He really needed to do something about that. Pressing lightly on Mali's back, he finished the gap between them and pressed his lips just slightly against hers. The kiss was brief, but even as their lips parted again, Remus left no space between the two of them anymore. His eyes were on Mali's eyes now, nervous and eager for a reaction. "I want you to - I want you to know every single one."

It was absolutely bound to happen. Their relationship had been a whirlwind of lies, darkness and death but somehow every tragic twist and turn seemed to bring them closer. This was inevitable, who could blame them for sitting so closely, her hand over his heart and his on her hip. It was almost as pleasant as when Theo touched her, but something was lacking. The warmth of the fire and his flattering words clouded up her head and made up for it, chasing away all thoughts of the tall Healer. It was just her and Remus now, as it had been during her house arrest when the seeds of this fledgling relationship were first planted.
Mali knew the lines of Remus' face and his chest clinically, having seen them more than once as she worked to patch up his broken body. Now she wanted to know them in a more intimate sense. To know what each one meant to him, and maybe if certain ones made him think of her. The scars on her hip would always remind her of him and everything he'd done for her, especially the way he made her feel tonight when his fingers stroked against the healed skin.
It was bound to happen. They were helpless victims of fate and circumstance. Continually pushed together until the friction finally ignited something. She laid a hand against his cheek as their lips met and it lingered once the kiss broke. It was brief but intense. Every fond feeling, every sweet word melted into that kiss. Mali smiled as she stroked over one of the more brutal scars lining his face with her thumb, he wanted her to know them after all, every single one. "They're beautiful."
All doubt about Remus' affections died with that kiss and it left her craving something more, something longer. Her hand slid back around the base of his neck, drawing him in and she kissed him again. It started out soft and fluttery, like everything always was about them but desire and a need to satisfy the craving drove it deeper.
