This was going to be very... uncomfortable. At least awkward, maybe a bit painful. Mali still felt raw from the snarkfest she'd had with Remus Mister Lupin. It wasn't fair. She wasn't trying to speak for him or hurt him, all she wanted to do was.. fix things. Mali fixed things. She fixed people and she fixed emotions but all she managed to do in her quest to fix Mister Lupin was screw everything up. There were too many emotions and lots of confusion and now there were hurt feelings and she didn't even know where to begin to sort it out. Now, everything was about to get worse.
Mali'd taken a second job, a position within the Ministry. It served two purposes, they needed the extra money for potion ingredients and it gave her a secret connection in her and Eoin's cause. She had access to the names of werewolves who registered and could help fudge some records to cover their tracks. It was almost perfect, except she couldn't help feeling sour every moment she worked there, couldn't manage her normal Mali smile or upbeat attitude. It was exhausting to be in such a bad mood for so many hours of the day, and today she was tasked with visiting registered werewolves and documenting their 'transformation room'. Where it was in the house, how many exits to the outside the room had whether it be doors or windows, what enchantments were used to safe guard the outside.
The werewolves she'd already visited had been less than gracious about it and given their recent emotional history she doubted Mister Lupin would be any better, but she already resolved herself not to cry. Not in front of him, she would cry later. How had they gotten here? How had their relationship changed so much in such a short span of time. It was dizzying, but it made sense. Their relationship grew rapidly, it was only logical that it would deteriorate rapidly. She just thought it was stronger than that.
The witch stood on his door step for a good long minute, taking deep calming breaths as she worked up the nerve to knock. Mali stalled, smoothing out her Ministry robes and fidgeting with a loose strand of hair, tucking it back behind her ear. When she could delay it no further, she knocked briskly on the door and stepped back to wait for him to answer, praying to whatever holy deity that was responsible for this mess that his children wouldn't be home.
She was all business when he answered the door. "Mister Lu--" Her voice cracked with nerves but she cleared her throat and started again. "Hello Mister Lupin, I'm here from the Ministry with the Creature Task Force." She tried not to look directly at him, preferring to keep her gaze down. She could do this, as long as she didn't have to see his face. "I have a few questions for you." Mali chanced a glance at his face, eyes flicking up to meet his. There was an unspoken plea for understanding in her gaze. This was hard but she needed this position and she would have to soldier through it.

Remus was alone. The children were off on a play-date - because while they had very many adults and one clingy father to spend all their time with, sometimes the kids just needed to be kids. Remus could let them off for a few hours. But he was alone - in more ways than one but he really, really needed to not think about anything other than that one way. His house was empty, that was the one. He could have left, gone out himself for some fun, but Remus was past that point. He'd let himself get mopey and now he found himself not wanting to be around people very much at all. He was doing the one thing he knew he couldn't do.
But he would stay busy, even if it wasn't fun. He wasn't going to give up. In just a couple of hours his kids would be home again and there was all the reason in the world not to fall into a total funk like he so wanted to. Today, the house needed a good cleaning. Remnants of Christmas celebrations were still scattered about their home and Remus was tackling it all the old-fashioned way - no magic, just him. It would take him longer this way. He was busy pulling Christmas ornaments off the tree, wrapping each one up and putting them away in a box, when someone knocked on his door. Great.
All sorts of faces showed up at Remus' door at all sorts of times - but this one still gave him a start when he glanced out of the window before opening the door. He'd never written Mali back; by the tone of her letter, he hadn't imagined she was very interested in hearing from him. For a brief moment, he felt an old and familiar flicker of warmth. She was checking on him. But when he pulled open the door, he saw the rest of her, dressed out in the robes of a Ministry worker. He could have slammed the door in her face. Checking on him, indeed.
There couldn't be a thing that the blasted Ministry didn't already know about him - so he couldn't imagine what kinds of questions Mali could possibly have for him, but he knew he would be an idiot to refuse her all the same. She'd just come back, maybe with an Enforcer friend or two. Remus held his weight with the Auror department but this new task force was very much stacked against him.
When Mali finally looked at him, Remus looked away. He moved out of the doorway so she could come inside. "Can you at least not pretend like I'm a stranger? That's inane."

As the door opened she wore a brief flicker of hope on her face. He would understand, Remus was a reasonable man most of the time. But when he saw her and her Ministry robes it was clear that the hope was all in vain. Maybe after everything was said and done, while he was alone in his living room and thinking back he would see that she had to do this. Maybe he would regret what he wrote in his letters, too. Maybe he would know how much she regretted her own words, not that she'd told him as much. For now they would have to push on through this, the air between them thick with tension.
Her heart sank like a brick when he looked away, face falling from it's feigned and forced neutrality. She watched him step aside while chewing on her lower lip. There was no use trying to pretend to be unbothered now, her discomfort seeped through tiny cracks in her resolve. His question sparked a flare of temper, burning hot in her veins. It washed away her anxious feelings and fogged up her brain. She didn't think clearly when she was mad, anger was an unfamiliar feeling with her but she was getting to know it better these past six months. "Do I actually know you? I thought I did but I'm not so sure anymore." Part of her wished she didn't know him, it would have been so much easier. Or would it? Would it even be a thing at all? He'd saved her from ending up a soulless, empty shell rotting away in St. Mungo's. She owed him better than this, several times over but what was she to do?
Mali forced one foot in front of the other to step through the door. Her feet felt like they were full of lead, near impossible to move but she managed. The house was a place of warmth the last time she was there, but now it felt cold. Half decorated for Christmas, the tree half trimmed. Sad and lonely. She turned to face him as her cool façade slipped completely away. "Remus..." The name rolled easily off her tongue, it felt far more natural than the stiff and informal way that she'd been addressing them for most of the time she knew him. It was a moment of weakness and Mali regretted it instantly, it was clearly written across her face. "I--I--We talked about this." Why she was working for the Ministry in the first place, he couldn't get upset over that. "You know I don't want to do this."

Remus looked away, but that didn't mean he wasn't looking. He was completely attuned to Mali's presence, watching her reflection in the glass of the window as her face fell, leaving Remus feeling like he was balancing on the razor edge of something. He wasn't quite sure what was on either side.
And then she was angry, snapping at him like he had just done her. Snapping, that was the word for it. At any moment, Remus felt like his strings were going to pop. He could probably drag a knife through the air in his entryway right now. Remus wasn't sure he believed what Mali was actually asking him right now. It felt like more of a challenge than anything. "Yes, you know me. I've never been anything other than authentic with you." He dragged his gaze back up to her's. He had to bite his tongue to stop himself from telling her to write that one down - her task force might get a kick out of that one.
When Mali finally came inside, Remus shut the door and waited with his arms crossed for Mali to lead whatever it was she was doing here. His gaze dropped again, completely, occupying himself by kicking up the tassels on the edge of the hall rug. He and Dora both hated that rug.
Mali said his name and Remus' head snapped back up faster than he meant to. Her face had fallen again. He almost liked her better angrier. No matter what she accused him of, at least then he felt like he could defend himself. When she looked like she did now, he just felt like a bully. She said what she had to say and Remus sighed, leaning back against the wall. "It's hard for you," he summed up, nodding at the far-off ceiling before once again forcing himself to look at his guest. "You know it's hard for me too? Okay? Please, just ask your questions."

Mister Lupin had this way of making even the most benign words feel sharp. When his gaze met hers it was her turn to look away, but not so dramatically as him. Her eyes pulled away from his to focus on a spot just beyond his shoulder. "Have you?" It was petty and she had no right to bring up such things considering what she'd done, but there was a bitter taste in her mouth. "I seem to recall something about you and tea and fiendfyre burns." So, so petty. It was true, though. He had been less than authentic and it was hard to ignore something that would've made her feel a little more justified.
Everything was so stiff and awkward and quiet. The last time she'd been in Remus' home there was a warmth and a pleasant buzz that stuck around even hours after she'd left and gone home. Now her nerves felt frayed and a tense feeling crawled up her spine. The thick atmosphere smothered the cross and angry feeling right out of her. Her shoulders slumped under the weight of it all, the consequences of all of her choices. She wasn't happy with how things were turning out. It was rough for someone who wanted to be liked to have to go door to door and experience how much people didn't like her due to her new occupation. It was even harder to stand in a house that used to be pleasant and with someone she'd ruined with a few quill strokes.
While Mali was unraveling, the sound of his name tightened him up, making his head snap up so fast that she took a startled step back. This was wretched. If he'd been angrier it would've been easy for her too. She could feel angry at him, less like she was being terrible. Her sarcasm felt like an inappropriate weapon as long as he looked as defeated and uncomfortable as she felt. "I know." she admitted, shoulders slumping even further. "Okay. Okay--I--um.." This was all wrong, it was unfair. "Okay." She could do this, even if she had to blink away a tear that snuck out through the cracks in resolve to keep it together. "I need to record a list of the specific protective charms you use to reinforce the room you use for your monthly transformation."

"That was before I decided to trust you." Mali's pettiness was nothing against Remus' hard-hitting truths. He didn't want to hurt her, not really - he just wanted to make her see how much she'd hurt him. Maybe that was petty. Or childish; Remus knew full and well he could be an adult here, he knew things hardly ever worked out the way one wanted them to...but right now, he just didn't care. He didn't have the energy to care. He was still reeling in grief, he was still a mess, he almost wanted to just hurt for a little while. Hurt over something different than what had been killing him for the past several months.
With such a resolution, of course things were awkward and tense. Remus was heaping guilt on Mali, he could practically watch her crack underneath it, but he made no move to ease it. Eventually, she acquiesced to just get on with what she came here for so neither of them had to feel that way for much longer.
"I keep records of every precaution I take, every month. They're downstairs. In the room. Do you need to see it?" Remus didn't like showing people his cellar room, best to get that over with too, if she needed to see it. It's not that the place was dirty, just a little battered. Remus kept it as clean as it was possible for what amounted to an underground kennel to be. It was the air he worried about - the room's presence. He didn't know how it felt for anyone else, for anyone that didn't have to lock themselves up in it every month and endure a pain that never lost its edge, but walking into that room felt far more oppressive than a few hurt feelings and an awkward silence.

Remus' words hit her harder than she expected. Mali was braced for witty, biting remarks but not something so honest and so uncomfortable. His words felt like they needed a response, like she should tell him that he could still trust her, or maybe apologize or something but she simply nodded, averting her eyes because looking at him was difficult. There was a deep, hollow ache in her chest and for a brief moment she regretted everything. Storming off to Remus' house after a fight with Theo, reconciling with Theo, the plea for space. All of it, even this damned project she'd started with Eoin. Mali didn't like how things were now, and she wanted desperately to go back to how they were before when she and Remus could lay out on a blanket at the world's coldest picnic while they talked about the theory of magic and how much of a brat he was. This 'mission' of hers was slowly changing everything she thought she knew, crushing the light slowly out of her world view. Mali was sacrificing a lot for it, but she didn't want to anymore. She wanted Remus to be her friend, to forgive her but he was unreachable.
This wasn't fair. There was no fairness in the world. No balance of karma. Sometimes terrible people got to do their terrible things without repercussions, and good intentioned witches had to go out and treat innocent people like criminals. Demanding to see their self made prison cells and reporting on anything that wasn't up to par. She wouldn't snitch on those who weren't up to Ministry satisfaction if she could help it. She would help them. The Ministry could crush her spirit, but they couldn't change who she was or what she wanted to do. Remus did everything perfectly, he took responsibility for keeping everyone safe during his condition and if she could see how he did it then... maybe she could help others.
"No!" She answered a little too hastily, shaking her head. "No, I don't want to see it." Not the room. That was asking too much of the both of them. Mali was supposed to, but she made a snap decision that she couldn't humiliate him like that. He didn't deserve that, Remus was a good person and she wasn't going to treat another good person like this, not today. Mali couldn't cope with the feelings of guilt and pity that room would invoke, either. They would drown her and she was only just kept her head above water as it was. "The room, I mean. The records, if you could get them? I can wait here." Tomorrow she would go back to reluctant Ministry worker, but she couldn't do it any longer today.

Mali answered him so fast, Remus jumped a little. No, she didn't want to see it, gods, no. That hurt Remus. In no way, shape, or form did he actually want her to see the room either - but she sounded outright...what was that? Disgusted? Remus was letting his feelings flavor this conversation heavily. Some part of him couldn't help but acknowledge that Mali was just as uncomfortable with this situation as he was and that was, in all reality, where her answer came from - but that wasn't good enough. He was hurt and bitter and some other part of him needed to make her the bad guy. Some part of him just needed to hurt.
"Fine by me," he shrugged. He stared at her, waiting. He felt as petulant as his children looked when they were arguing over some nonsensical thing...but he just didn't want to. Didn't want to give Mali whatever she came here for without at least making her feel bad for asking for it. It was awful, and a piss-poor bandage for the bigger issues at hand, but Remus just didn't care. Put any man in such a position and see just what he reverts to.
Finally, she did ask, and Remus turned off toward the kitchen with a nod and a, "Yeah." He went into his cellar, through the door that was so plainly ordinary 20-odd days out of the month, and opened up the box full of all of his journals of notes. He'd been doing this a long time, and kept every one of them - though, that was more of a neurotic pack rat habit for anything in print form than it was a commitment to keeping his nose clean for the Ministry. Remus couldn't throw away a book, or a journal...his notes from Hogwarts were probably floating around in the attic somewhere...Remus picked up the newest looking journal from the top of the box and carried it back out to the hall.
"Here," he held it out to Mali. "Flip to the last filled-in page for this past month. You'll find full lists of spells, potions, and a few physical enhancements. Runes, and whatnot. Let me know if you have any questions," he said matter-of-fact, and then crossed his arms over his chest.

He jumped and did not seem any warmer too her. Had turning down the room viewing been a mistake? His gaze was intense and it made her feel uncomfortable and squirmy underneath it. So much so that she dropped her own gaze and fidgeted with the sleeve of her robe in a desperate attempt to avoid looking at him. She felt all sorts of wrong and didn't really know how to make it right so all she could do was soldier through it. Just a little while longer.
The witch cringed at his terseness as he went to retrieve said notes. Remus was always so warm and inviting, this side of him made the man feel very foreign and unfamiliar. She wanted to call out to him, to try and reach the kind and gentle soul that she found so attractive but instead she merely worried her lower lip between her teeth and tried not to look at anything but the floor. Not the couch where he patched her up, not the pictures of his children that lined the wall. Nothing that seemed to Remus-y, just the floor.
She looked up only briefly to take the notebook offered to her, busying herself with flipping through the pages as he spoke and told her what she might find inside. "Runes?" Mali asked, glancing up at Remus. Runes! She'd never thought of such a thing. "That's brilliant." She even took the class back in school. Her grade wasn't spectacular but it was passable which made it all the more surprising that the idea never occurred to her that one could use runes to keep someone in during transformation. It took a moment of searching through an over full and rather busy brain to pull the name of the protective rune out. "Algiz? Right?" Sadly there was no Rune to fix what was broken between them. They had to do that themselves. Mali had to take the first step, had to try.
"Remus..." she started, closing the notebook. She couldn't fufill the Ministry roll today, she would have to do so at another time. "This doesn't feel right." None of it did. Them being angry and hostile towards eachother, her invading the homes of registered werewolves to treat them like criminals. It all felt wrong, and as she was prone to do Mali was looking to him for guidance. She had absolutely no right too, considering it was her misstep that created the space between them but she needed it because there was no where else to turn. "Please.. I don't want it to be like this."

They were pretty pathetic, the two of them. Fidgety and passive, like playground enemies forced into the same room together until they both apologized. Well, Remus wasn't going to start, that was for sure. He was going to (grudgingly) give Mali what she needed, give her a hard time for it, and then shoo her away from his house. His life, maybe. He was too hurt and too bitter right now to realize what she really meant to him. And too pissed off by her Ministry robes to care. If they were ever going to make up, he'd make damn sure the Ministry had no part in it.
"Runes," Remus nodded curtly. He watched Mali flip through the notebook warily. There was nothing illegal about runes...but that, as it turned out, wasn't her angle. She sounded impressed. Remus shrugged. "I've had a lot of time to work it out." Remus most certainly went overboard with all of his protections - and turns out, being too prepared actually can turn around and bite you in the ass - but he refused to entertain the thought of himself hurting anyone else. There had been some pretty close calls in the past; he had the luxury to go overboard now, and he was taking full advantage of that fact.
Mali named out a rune, and before he even knew what he was doing, Remus answered with a, "Yes, very good," in his most professor tone. Color him impressed. He pulled his lips in to prevent any further praise of the woman who was here, though not of her own volition (Remus knew that, in his heart), to break him down. He'd done it now, though. Remus cursed himself when Mali closed the notebook and looked at him instead. He didn't want to be the object of her study. He drew in on himself and stared at the rug. "It's not right," he said, just a bit petulant. But that's not what she meant, exactly. Mali knew this wasn't right, but she was talking about them, too. What they were doing wasn't right; but at this point, Remus didn't know what else to do. He glanced back up at Mali. "What do you want it to be like, Mali? Because I have absolutely no idea what you want."

The stiff, terse response from Remus made her want to shrivel up right on the spot and go hide somewhere. This wasn't how it was supposed to be, not after all they'd been through together in their short friendship. Even as he answered her next statement it felt dismissive, like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world rather than in the same room with her. That caused a deep, achy feeling in her chest and a wavering of her resolve to push through the meeting intact. A single tear blurred her vision but Mali would blink it away while she thumbed through the notebook, refusing to let it even think about falling.
There was a glimmer of hope in the form of Remus' confirmation that yes, it was the rune she managed to pull out of her brain. He even sounded impressed and one could feel very proud of themselves when they managed to impress such an erudite man but the glimmer fizzled out soon after when she dared to look up from the journal with a small hint of a smile on her lips. It almost felt like it could be like the time before they fought, Mali questioning something and Remus freely handing out his knowledge and approval. His face made it clear that it wasn't old times at all, just something that had managed to slip past the wall he'd built to keep her out. When he pulled in, Mali knew exactly what it meant because it was something she often did as well. His body language was clear and easy to read today, much like hers always was. He was shutting down to her.
"Would you have preferred someone else?" She sounded more exasperated than defensive. Would this have been easier on him if it were a stranger? Personally, Mali thought that the fact it was someone he knew wouldn't look at him with disgust and disdain made the whole deal a little more tolerable. A little less wrong. It could be someone who wasn't as kind and as compassionate as she was, rifling through his files and looking 'round his transformation room as they peered down their nose at him. Mali held the notebook carefully, with reverence. Would someone else have done the same? She couldn't take his cool withdrawal, at least if he'd of been angry it would've been easier to stomach. Mali stomped her foot as she snapped at him, because at times of frustration she was prone to immaturity. "I don't want to feel like you're my enemy! We're friends, we've been friends!" Her shoulders slumped in defeat and she deflated under the wrongness of it all. "Please be my friend."

Seeing even a hint of a smile on Mali's face killed him. He wasn't prepared at all for how much it hurt. He so liked that smile, and putting it on her face...at least, he had. Before. Now he didn't know what he liked, or what he wanted to do, or what he could do. The weight of it all was too much. He folded in on himself and then Mali's smile was gone. It was just easier this way, guarded against each other until they felt nothing at all. Right?
If anything, his defensiveness just worked Mali up - the exact opposite of what he needed, because her outbursts sent his heart racing. Her question was tough. The answer was both obviously yes and obviously no. He didn't want to see Mali right now, but their uncomfortable present arrangement did give him some leniency in this new order from the Minister. It was a small victory - one that Remus would claim selfishly, not allowing Mali any of the fleeting relief he felt.
"Your coworkers would have made much quicker work of this inconvenience," he answered her coldly, roundabout as could be. Quicker because they would have just barged in and torn through his things, rather than asking nicely. Remus raised his eyebrows when Mali stamped her foot, an action he expected more from his five-year-old and not this woman he was so recently tangled up with. Oh, gods. Mali wanted him to be her friend - that's what Mali wanted. "Sure that's what you want today, how about tomorrow?" Remus snapped before he could stop himself. He shook his head. "I can't do this with you right now. Is there anything else the Ministry needs?" He held his hand out for his journal.

Remus' distance and cold composure ripped a cavernous hole right in Mali's heart. Her inadequacy was highlighted by what they both knew to be a terrible truth, her co-workers would have made quicker work of the whole thing. They'd be gone by now, not standing stiffly in Remus' living room feeling fragile and small. This way was better and deep down they both knew it, a stranger would have been a deeper insult to injury. Mali looked down in an attempt to work quietly through her feelings. Her fingers were stiff and frozen around the book, holding it like a life line. He would have preferred strangers to her and that hurt. It reverberated against the cold walls of that cavernous hole.
Mali pleaded with Remus, in her own way. Snapping and asking for him to be her friend but she must've turned his heart to stone. He turned the plea for friendship down. The look on the witches' face was stricken and heartbroken, like she was could crumble right there in his living room, all over his rug sort've like he'd bled all over hers more than once. "Remus!" she cried out, begging for something or someway to make it all okay again, but there was nothing that she could do. He couldn't do this. Bloody fine. "No I--" Mali's voice cracked and her mouth snapped shut and she was looking at the floor again. The witch closed her eyes and clenched her fingers, working and working to get through the encounter without dissolving into tears. Mali turned to anger instead.
"No, Mister Lupin." She looked back up at the werewolf, face uncharacteristically neutral and voice flat. "The Ministry thanks you for your cooperation.." Remus held out his hand for the book and instead of giving it to him she threw the journal down at his feet. "That's what my co-workers would have done." Without another word the small witch whipped around and stalked back towards the door. She paused, her hand on the knob. Throwing his journal was done out of frustration and instead of making her feel better, it made her feel terrible and monstrous. An apology was already forming on the tip of her tongue but it tasted bitter and she knew it would've fell on deaf ears anyway. Mali glanced back at Remus and his journal before she left, slamming the door behind her.
