New Year's Eve marked the end of the year and the holiday season. She enjoyed it well enough but there was normally a somber note to the night. People would promise to change (and most of them had their fingers crossed behind their backs) and forget the warmth of Christmas. The extra kindness that hung in the air would slowly dissipate and things would get back to normal. The somber note wasn't quite as strong this time, it'd been a hell of a year and she was glad to leave it behind. 2003 wasn't all bad though. There was a big, terrible mess that brought Mali to the edge and tested her in the worst ways possible but that mess brought two of the most beautiful lights into her life. One of those lights was sent away, but the other was the reason that she was spending New Year's Eve in. Her handsome troll was laid up in bed being fussed over because the poor soul had the most terrible afflictions... The Man Flu. It was more like a cold, but it didn't matter. She had him propped up on a mountain of pillows with a never ending supply of tissues along with Pepper Up potion every few hours and lots and lots of affection. They could doctor this cold right on up and they'd have him back to full capacity in know time. Good as new. Mali sat on the edge of the bed next to him, fingers brushing through his hair. These sort of moments with Theo were her favorite. They were low key but sweeter than candy. It was just them and nothing else, no snow to pelt each other with or siblings to try and avoid. Nothing bad hung between them. Her fingers trailed down to press the back of her hand to his forehead, checking for fever. "How're you feeling, love?" Taking care of people truly made to feel at home. "D'you want anything? Water, soup? More potion?" Her gaze trailed off thoughtfully for a moment before she brightened up with a grin. "Alcohol? It is..." Mali paused, glancing at her watch "Just about New Year's after all." She watched the last few moments of the old year tick away and at the exact stroke of midnight, Mali leaned over to steal a quick kiss. The brief brushing of their lips ignited fireworks and a tingly warmth flooded every inch of her. Even if he was sick, he was the perfect one to ring in the new year with. _____________________________________ Theo Ashland

This was the absolute worst. Theo had champagne to drink, confetti to toss, and a pretty girl to kiss at midnight - but instead, he was sick in bed on New Year's Eve. Though...really, he couldn't say it was the worst. At all. He was achy and stuffy and sleepy and all around whiny with a cold, but that same pretty girl was here, taking excellent care of him. Theo was all tucked into his bed and currently, Mali had her fingers running through his hair. This was Theo's off button, or reset button, depending on how one looked at it. He sniffled and he coughed but he was very, very content - like the world's biggest house cat. He could have purred if she didn't put him half-asleep, eyelids fluttering.
When she spoke, though, he sat up straight and opened his eyes. He didn't want to sleep through all his time with her, even if he wasn't the greatest company at the moment. "A little achy," he said, and nodded. "Can I have another potion?" He grimaced at the very idea of drinking right now; not even champagne to bring in the fast-approaching new year. Potions, though...Mali was keeping him full of the stuff, just the way he liked it. Theo didn't handle being sick very well; he hated it, and took every precaution to prevent himself from catching something about work, but sometimes these things just happened.
And maybe kissing wasn't the greatest idea while he was still contagious...but, well, it was New Year's Day after all. Mali gave him a sweet little kiss that he couldn't help but smile into, grabbing for the hand she had pressed against his forehead. "Or that, I'll take another one of those." Unlikely, but even a sniffling Theo could still be a cheeky Theo. He fiddled with her fingers and leaned back into his pillows. Maybe they could cuddle. Nobody got sick from cuddling, right? He took a moment to cough before looking back up at Mali. "I think we're going to have a good year. I feel good about it." It felt important to say, he just didn't know how to word it. They'd had some tough times recently; but he loved her, and needed her to know that. Perhaps it was a bit of the wooziness in his head talking.

Mali was pretty alright with the idea of no champagne toast, she hated the taste of the stuff anyway. It didn't really feel like they were missing out on much, not as long as she was by his side. As much as she wished that he felt better, Theo was rather cute when he sniffled. It was endearing, humanizing the big, strong man and giving him a touch of vulnerability. He looked smaller, more fragile. There was an innocent beauty to people as they slept and she almost hated to interrupt Theo just as his eyes fluttered closed, but his skin was warm to the touch and another round of potions would help him sleep better, anyway. One didn't sleep well with scratchy sounding coughs and clogged noses.
Her smile fell a bit, weighed down by sympathy when he told her he was achy. Her poor little troll, they had potions for that. Upon hearing that Theo was sick she'd stocked up on a plethora of different potions to try and mitigate the nastier symptoms. It was one of the many benefits to having Eoin as a roommate, she always had the right ones on hand. First, they had to ring in the new year and Theo thought that another kiss might serve him better than a potion and she grinned. "Mm, I think I'll save that for when you're not contagious." Instead, she pressed her lips to his warm forehead before stretching to nick a small vial from his bedside table with her free hand.
As much as they'd been through in the past year, as many times as they pulled apart by different things, one thing became undeniably clear. They were better together than they were apart, no matter what it was that they were put up against. Things weren't perfect, they still didn't see eye to eye on her career choices but they had their sweet moments that more than made up for the bickering. "I know it will. Any year I get to start with you is bound to be a great one." She didn't have any wooziness to blame anything on, just the fact that she was beyond smitten with him. Mali took her hand back long enough to uncork the vial and bring it to Theo's lips to help him drink it. There was something about nursing someone back to health that felt very intimate. He was in a vulnerable state, even if it was just a cold and there was an unspoken trust and dependence. That paired with her own lovesickness made her overly affectionate.
When the potion was done and the vial discarded she fit herself into the crook of his arm as he laid propped up on several pillows. "I've read somewhere body heat is good for colds. Germs be damned."

Poor, poor Theo. No more kisses until he was no longer contagious. "No fair." He could have pouted, but moving his face too much made him cough (like pretty much everything else at the moment). And besides...Mali was being so incredibly sweet, he could probably make it few more days with this kiss-less sentence. She was close and she was warm and he was completely smitten, watching her with puppy-dog eyes wherever she moved. His head was woozy with potion and fever but he really did just love her that much, too. The two of them could probably make people ill just watching them, the lovebirds.
Mali, bless her, also responded in kind to his slight rambles about the new year. He nodded his agreement, opening his mouth to say something - he wasn't sure what, surely something sweet would come out in this moment - but there was a vial against his lips. He took the potion down gratefully, wrinkling his nose at the taste but melting into relaxation at the near-instantaneous relief it brought him. To him, potions and healing magic were probably the most powerful parts of magic as a whole. He'd experimented with Muggle medicines before out of pure curiosity, and he had to say, nothing made him feel happier to be a wizard with a wand. The poor Muggles had to wait hours, usually days, to get any sort of relief.
"Do you have any New Year's Resolutions?" Theo asked, as Mali settled down into the crook of his arm. This conversation topic could very well bring them into some sensitive territory - but he felt more vulnerable and open to Mali than usual right now. Maybe that would help him see her side better. He laughed at her cursing of the germs - as far as he was concerned, her body heat was good for everything.

Theo might've thought the new policy of no kissing unless one was free of pathogens wasn't fair, but Mali wasn't keen on catching his man cold. Whatever nasty little bug decided to invade his system seemed to be knocking him for a loop and she preferred them both to be healthy and not to pass a cold back and forth like a hot potato. "Oooh shh." She gently chided, moving to press a silencing finger to his lips but stopping short when she realized that would have rendered the whole 'no kissing' rule useless. "You'll be better in no time, I've heard your Healer is really good." She winked at him with a cheeky smile and a playful wrinkle of her nose.
Theo's own nose wrinkled when the potion hit his tongue, making her laugh. "It's not that bad!" Easy for her to say, when she wasn't the one drinking it. "I'm going to tell Eoin you made that face, he'll never forgive you." Mali was relived that the potion seemed to work it's magic despite not tasting very good, he seemed to feel a little better and she settled in right next to him, wiggling to get comfortable in the crook of his arm. The conversation turned back to the holiday, New Years. Mali bit her lower lip thoughtfully as she turned the question over in her brain before answering. "I don't know if I really believe in the notion of New Years Resolutions. If someone's going to change something why wait for the new year? Why not when you realize there's a problem?"
There was more to say. She did sort of have a resolution, but it was only a new year's one because of the timing. The problem that needed fixing was one that she was ignoring for quite a long time but couldn't be anymore. Mali reached for Theo's hand, pulling it over so she could fidget with his fingers instead of her normal shirt hem or hair. It gave her a reason to avoid looking at him, too. "I think if I did believe in them..." she started cautiously, unsure of how to phrase the problem that needed resolving. "I'd resolute to be better at things. Better at magic, and better at handling pressure." She was very touchy when it came to her level of competency but there were some things she couldn't turn the other cheek too. She splinched herself too often, flubbed up basic charms and lost her head during emergencies. "I'm good at fixing spell damage but really nothing else. I don't wanna be so incapable." Her admission made her feel very vulnerable and she quickly pressed on from the subject, tilting her head to look at him. "You?"

"She's the best," Theo grinned at his world's-best Healer, pressing his fingertip to her's that didn't quite reach his lips. He just couldn't resist touching the woman. She was so cute. The cutest! Theo felt absolutely smitten in his state of haze, the butterflies in his chest wearing fuzzy little sweaters that made him warm all over. He almost even managed to hide his distaste with the potion - almost. From the time Theo was a kid he couldn't stand choking that stuff down; Eoin made it just like Theo's dad did, it seemed. Whenever Theo himself had to brew some up, if he was in a hurry at the hospital or home alone, he added his mum's little secret ingredient - it made the stuff taste like cotton candy.
"Nooo, don't, you'll get me in trouble," Theo fake-whined, ending up in a laugh. Though, the idea of an unforgiving Eoin was pretty frightening...Luckily, Mali was there to distract all of his fears right up. She settled against him and he got to idly questioning her, his brain wandering down random paths and his tongue wandering with it. He wasn't entirely aware of what he was asking, he just knew he liked hearing Mali's voice; it was soothing just like everything else about her...
Theo's eyelids were fluttering again - but he was listening. "You're so smart," he murmured when she quieted down for a moment. He shifted so he was sitting up a little straighter, a little more alert. "That's smart. There's nothing really all the special about the beginning of January, is there?" Distracted, again, as Mali pulled his hand into hers and started playing with his fingers. That was becoming a little signal between the two of them, of discomfort or nerves. Theo looked down at the top of Mali's head with a pensive expression and waited - and there it was. He felt a little kick of guilt over the way she talked about herself - he knew on some level he had to have helped plant those seeds of doubt due to his disagreements with her. But it wasn't all bad, was it? She wasn't complaining or lamenting; she was resolving.
"You're good at lots of things." That needed saying first. "But everyone has room to grow. I think those are good goals. Reckon this time next year, you'll be so wise you'll have a beard longer than Albus Dumbledore's." Theo was grinning again by the time she looked back at him. She wanted to know his resolutions. Theo wasn't much of a planner, not with his own life anyway. He was more reactive than proactive. "Besides a really long beard...mm. I wanna be happy, I guess. Stay happy. I wanna make you happy. And I want to make the kitchen sink stop leaking once and for all."

Theo tapped his finger against hers, declaring his Healer the best and Mali melted a little. "Did anyone ever tell you" she started, breaking her own rule as she leaned in, their lips brushing together for a light and quick kiss. Surely the fact that Mali was lovesick would ward off the germs, so the kiss was alright. Just one. "That flattery would get you everywhere?" It even earned him a banned kiss. If she did get sick, Theo would take excellent care of her just like she was taking care of him, that made the prospect of illness a little bit more tolerable.
"I'm so telling him." she teased, grinning. That would be a sight to see, big tall Theo being scolded and glared at by cute little Eoin. "You're in for it. Don't let his size fool you, either. He's inherited his temper from his Irish grandmother. It's scary" Sort've. Eoin was a sweet little muffin, even when he was mad. "Why d'you think we're friends? It's not because we're almost literally the same person." Both worked in the hospital, both Hufflepuffs, both cute as a button. "It's because I'm afraid of his bad side." Enough taunting, though. When she had sufficiently scared Theo off of Eoin it was time for snuggles.
And the snuggles were really the best. She liked when Theo told her that she was smart, because Mali believed him when he said it. It made her feel good, like she wasn't as average as she felt. When he sat up, it disturbed her comfortable position and Mali tilted her head back, asking "You okay?" with an edge of concern to her voice. Mali nodded thoughtfully "I don't think anyone who waits to make changes Is really serious about them." And of course, like always Theo had something to say that made her feel better. He thought she was good at a lot of things and she found herself smiling a restrained, close lipped smile at their hands as she fidgeted with their fingers together. "You'll braid my beard hair for me? Maybe weave some flowers in there or something?"
When Theo spoke, Mali shifted so she was facing him instead of just looking back. "That's cheating." Their hands broke apart so she could instead lay hers against his chest, tracing little shapes over his sternum. "You've done half of that. You already make me happy. " Her hand left his chest to pat his chin. "I don't think you'll pull off the beard quite as well as I will, but I'll braid yours for you. Maybe a French twist." Mali settled back against Theo, laying her head on his chest while she contemplated all the ways he could fix his beard. His heart beat mixed with the deep and slow sound of his breathing could almost lull her to sleep, but then she would miss out on the snuggling so she kept up the conversation. "What would make you happy? Besides fixing the kitchen sink." It was something she genuinely wondered about. Mali thought Theo was happy, but one didn't really know did they?

This wasn't just flattery - this was darn hard work, and it finally paid off. Theo got his kiss, light and sweet, and he melted into a satisfied grin and one raised, teasing eyebrow. "I think I just figured that out." That would do, for now. He really would feel terrible if he got Mali sick.
If she kept threatening to tell Eoin on him, though...he might just have to kiss her again. "Oh, I'm not fooled in the least. I've seen him yell." Theo honestly never wanted to be on the receiving end of that, having seen what Eoin could do to a person for disturbing his pharmacy at work. He and Mali were exactly the same, sweet but deadly when they needed to be, and that made him laugh. "Come off it, he would never yell at you. I know you're both in on it, little terrors," he teased through his laughter.
His teasing stopped, too (mostly), when it was time for cuddles. Mali made him feel all sorts of things, enamored to feisty, but her warmth was damn hard to beat. And damn hard to resist. When he shifted, trying to keep himself awake, he answered her question with, "Mm. Just sleepy. But I'm not ready to go to bed yet." Theo had no intention of letting Mali off-duty until he was completely incoherent.
She kept him pretty rapt with their interesting topic of conversation, anyway. And her silly jokes. "Of course. Would you go for bells, as well? I heard there was a pirate back in the day that stuck firecrackers in his beard, that would suit you."
Theo's answer to their actual topic of conversation, not beards and beard accessories, earned him a look. He grinned back - he was such a little cheater, wasn't he? But he was honest, too. "Yes, and I want to make sure I keep doing that," he shrugged slightly, sinking back down so he was more cuddle-prone again. "What about matching beards? Would that make you happy?" He grinned as Mali got comfortable again. She looked like she might be getting sleepy, too, which was definitely a preferable alternative to her having to leave. They could just stay right here, just like this. He finally let his eyes close as he considered her question. "Mm. Being with you makes me happy. Working makes me happy...being wanted in the world, I guess. Having a purpose." A surprisingly strong answer from such a sleepy troll.
