It was the afternoon before the full moon and Mali was busily preparing for it, packing up a bag of what she thought of as her 'post full moon' kit. It had evolved over the months from simple baked goods and a fluffy blanket to muffins infused with pepper up and pain killing potions, blankets that were charmed to warm up when wrapped around someone, wound cleaning potions and bruise pastes and whatever she could think of to ease the trauma of the morning after. Mali put her whole heart into her little 'mission' and was constantly thinking of new ideas. In a way, she enjoyed it. It was a challenge and her way of putting some good karma to make up for the terrible thing she and Theo had done. Even if the 'incident' was put to rest in the eyes of the Ministry, she carried a small pebble of guilt over it wherever she went. Mali would be trying to atone for her sin for the rest of her life.
As she was eyeing one of the muffins and considering taste testing it, an owl appeared at the window. The bird appeared agitated, tapping impatiently at the glass with a letter in it's beak. She plucked up one of the muffins and took a bite while drifting over to the window to retrieve the letter. The owl indignantly ruffled it's feathers, climbing inside the apartment for a rest. Mali broke off a piece of said muffin and offered it out to the creature, coaxing "It's cinnamon. It's good, have a bite!" as a thank you for carrying the mail. She munched on her own piece of muffin, reading through the letter with eyebrows knit and face set with worry.
Remus was sick, wasn't feeling right. Things had been very... bad.. between them, but they made up and even though things were off she would be there for him just like he'd been there for her countless times. Mali made a quick dash around the apartment, tossing whatever she thought might be useful into a tote bag. It was hard to gauge what she would need because the letter was fairly vague over the whole 'sick' part but she winged it. Pepper up potion, calming draughts, a few vials of a potion that would mitigate cold symptoms like sore throats and stuffiness before she popped away and off to Godric's Hollow, ending up in one of the decorative shrubs on Mister Lupin's lawn instead of on his doorstep like intended.
She untangled herself from the hedge, picking leaves out of her hair and off of her shirt as she made her way to the door to knock. Mali glanced over her shoulder one or twice as she waited for Remus to answer, arms folded and shoulders stooped. Now that she worked at the Ministry she didn't feel like it would be ideal for someone to catch her at his house in her spare time. They couldn't be 'public friends' if they were supposed to be mortal enemies. " 'Ello." she said brightly, stepping inside as soon as he opened the door. "I got your message, you're not feeling well?"

Something wasn't right. Remus never felt all that spectacular in the week leading up to the full moon - wolfsbane could usually bring him back to baseline, but certainly not above it. He'd just gotten used to the aches and the exhaustion over the years, and stuffed himself with chocolate to fight off some of the agitation. He managed. And now, he had the prospect of Eoin and Mali's experiments to keep him up during this downtime. It was very exciting - enhanced wolfsbane, an attempt to counteract some of the side effects that were missed the first time or that, sometimes, came from the potion itself.
But something wasn't right. After a morning of breakfast and cuddles with his kids, Remus sent them off with a Weasley and took the last round of wolfsbane Mali and Eoin had made for him this month. It tasted a bit different, but he wasn't all that bothered - they were experimenting, after all. Remus had weighed the risks of helping these two in their endeavor for quite a while and eventually decided that, honestly, nothing could be worse than the alternative of no potion at all. Bring it on.
So Remus wasn't bothered by the bad taste or the extreme sensation of exhaustion that came over him into the afternoon. He wasn't even all that worried about the weakness in his muscles - it was sort of relaxing, in a way. What did eventually worry him were the bright purple splotches that started to bloom all across his skin and the incessant feeling of needing to scratch the inside of his throat.
It took Remus quite a while to get himself off the couch and over to his desk in his study, and even longer to write a letter to Mali. Even in this state, he refused to call for help from the hospital. Not this close to the full moon. Mali would help him and he knew she was safe. Remus sent his letter off through one of the front windows and settled himself next to the front door, afraid he wouldn't be able to get to it by the time Mali arrived. He kept himself awake by running chronologically through the little game of back-and-forth he and Mali played of helping each other, wondering who exactly had gone last. He was just happy they'd made up, for the most part, having no energy to consider things may still be a little awkward. Those purple spots were starting to get itchy now.
Eventually, Mali arrived with a knock. Remus hauled himself up and opened the door, leaning heavily on it and letting her inside. She was as bright as ever, but Remus also didn't have the energy to consider the brief feeling of lightness that still gave him. "I think the wolfsbane made me sick," he said, pushing up his sleeve and scratching at his arm.

Remus sounded tired and looked terrible. Concern creased her brow and colored her face, changing her demeanor in an instant. It kicked her out of 'visiting friend' mode (they were friends now, right? They'd pretty much settled everything between them when he came to their aid. Or at least managed to set it aside) and into Healer mode. Mali unshouldered her bag to set it down on the floor beside her. The Healer turned Medi-Witch grabbed his arm and turned it over in her hands, chewing on her lower lip as she examined the splotches. "How long've you had these?" There was a slight streak of offense that cut through her chest, unhappy with the fact that he immediately jumped to her and Eoin's potion as the culprit. She ran through a quick mental list of afflictions that affected the skin.
Mali let go of his arm and took his face in both hands, looking him in the eye with a critical one of her own, turning his head this way and that. She hummed a 'Hmm' as she slid her hands down to his neck to palpate for any lumps or swollen lymph nodes. "How long's this been going on? Was it gradual or sudden?" Satisfied with her physical exam, Mali crossed her arms over her chest with her eyes narrowed in thought. "No sparks from your nose? Any difficulty speaking?" It was very curious. Purple pustules were surprisingly a symptom of a myriad of magical illnesses but they didn't look quite right for dragon pox or.. "Have you ever had spattergroit?"
She leaned forward again to study the itchy purple patches, tapping a thoughtful finger against her cheek. "I don't think they'll leave a scar or anything.. Not that you'd really notice, would you?" She straightened up, biting on her lower lip and shaking her head. Maybe she should go get Theo, he'd know what it was. While she had a working knowledge of various magical bugs, spell damage was her specialty. If it got severe enough then Mali would figure out a way to consult Ashley Avery, wasn't this her specialty? "Are you.. Maybe you're allergic to something?" Oh, she could've slapped herself for not asking that before she started plying him with potions with various new ingredients. "The last dose had a few things added to it to try and make the night easier."
Maybe it was the Wolfsbane. What would that mean for them? After worrying her lower lip some more, Mali took Remus by the arm to gently urge him back into the chair he occupied before she arrived. "Maybe you should sit down." Once he was seated, Mali stood up. It was automatic, without thinking like her hand acted on her own accord but her fingers found their way up to run through his hair to try and soothe away some feelings of discomfort. "I'll see what I've got to try and help. Maybe some Pepper Up potion, you think?"

"I just noticed them earlier today," Remus answered, also taking the time to really observe his splotchy arm. That's when they started itching, at least. He might have had them longer; Remus didn't really pay attention to skin imperfections anymore, even if they were purple. "They're very itchy." He tried his best to resist scratching and agitating the spots, stuffing his hands down into his pockets when Mali let go.
Remus held very still as Mali's hands went to his face. He felt more awake and aware than he had all day while she looked him in the eye - though, he couldn't quite look back, concentrating on the crinkly corners of her eyes instead. Nothing was different about the way Mali went about her Healing, she was very adept at it, but Remus couldn't help but feel different about it. Her touch was so comforting and gentle he almost couldn't stand it, sick or not. He barely resisted a shiver when she ran her hands down his neck and he decided right then to concentrate only on the words coming out of her mouth. He'd stare at the ceiling the whole time, if he had to.
It was surprisingly easier than he thought. Mali kept him on his toes with question after question. "I couldn't really tell you. I never feel great in the week leading up. The purple, though...that's definitely just within the last couple of hours. I think." He shook his head at her next round of questions - no spattergroit or anything like it. "No, nothing like that. Is this spattergroit? I really hope this isn't spattergroit." Remus would have honestly preferred a bad batch of potion over that terrible disease. The only thing worse than a werewolf is a werewolf with an uvula too infected to howl.
Mali managed to make him smile with a comment about scars, and again Remus tried to ignore how easy that smile came even in his current state. He just shook his head and looked at the ceiling - until she asked another question which made him drop his head and look at her. "Flobberworm Mucus. One of Peter's flobberworms exploded all over me in my third year and I was in the hospital wing for a week." He bit his lip and looked nervously at Mali. "It's a pretty common ingredient, I can handle small amounts of it but I usually avoid it. I'm sorry, I didn't even think to mention that."
All this talking and thinking was making Remus very tired. He was grateful when Mali put him in a chair, and even more grateful when she ran her hand through his hair. He closed his eyes, allowing himself the comfort. It's something she would have done regardless, it was just her manner - so it was okay, right? He nodded at her last question. "Yeah. My throat itches almost as bad as the spots."

She glanced up at Lupin as he spoke, nodding her understanding before she went back to scrutinizing the marks on his arms. It was sort've funny how differently magical diseases manifested. You'd never see anything show up in quite this shade of purple in the muggle world, but then the magical one was far more colorful in almost every aspect. "Try not to scratch them." she instructed absently, wrinkling her nose in thought. "If it's a skin infection that can spread it around." Although it didn't sound like a skin infection. Sure, the skin involvement was a big part of it but it wouldn't leave him looking so tired.
Remus didn't look at her much as she was examining him. There was a note of discomfort when she looked him straight in the eye and she noted that along with the fact that his eyes looked healthy, no sign of jaundice and the pupils looked reactive. Mali wrote his discomfort off as just feeling sick and itchy and tired, something silly for someone usually so perceptive. It was a little bit of willful ignorance, she had to think of him clinically to touch him without her heart buzzing or skipping a beat. It was hard for him, but it was hard for her too. She cared for Remus deeply and in a way unlike normal friendships. There was definitely something there, she just had to reject that something in favor of Theo. She loved Remus, but Theo was her soulmate, she was pretty sure. At one point she thought the answer was distance, but that made them both miserable. Now she had to ignore the closeness.
Mister Lupin was a problem to treat. They were friends.
Mali tilted her head as Remus tried to answer her questions, the wheels turning in her brain. "Did it come on before or after the potion, d'you know?" She didn't want to believe it was the potion, that meant that she and Eoin'd caused harm. There was enough of her causing harm to last a life time. "I hope not too." she said, cracking the slightest of grins. "It's very contagious." She'd just had her hands all over him and she lifted one up, wiggling the her fingers. "No gloves." For half a moment, they were both grinning at each other. Mali's persisted through her examination and Remus found one of her comments funny but then he looked up to the ceiling and her own smile fell away. "Why do you keep doing that?"
Nevermind. She shook her head, chasing out the uncomfortable thoughts that had started to settle in there. Turns out he was allergic to something, maybe it was the potion. "No, I should've asked." Flobberworm mucous. Such a simple answer. "That's literally one of the most basic protocol. Don't give someone something that could kill them. I can't believe I didn't ask before." Mali was irritated at herself, both for the fact that Remus couldn't really look at her and the fact she'd made such a careless mistake. "Eoin uses flobberworm mucous to thicken up the potion a bit. Are you allergic to anything else? We've put..." she trailed off with another head tilt, trying to recall what exactly was in this batch versus what they had for the next. "Runespoor egg. I dunno that we'll use them again, though. They're dead hard to get but they're s'posed to be really good at sharpening your mind." While Mali didn't exactly brew the potion herself, she knew almost everything about it. What ingredients they were using and why. It was half her brain child too, and she was very invested in it.
Scratchy throat. "Sounds a bit more like spattergroit there, but I doubt that's what this is." Not when he was literally allergic to something they'd put in the potion. He consented to the Pepper Up Potion and Mali went to retrieve it, pulling out a vial of the stuff. "Normally Pepper Up's not so good for scratchy throats on their own, but I've added some bitterroot too it. It's going to feel warm, but it should feel warm in the good way." She uncorked the vial and handed it off, returning to Remus to press a hand against his forehead. Mali was almost sure he was having a reaction but there was still a small glimmer of not so much hope, that it was something else. Nope, his temperature was pretty normal and Mali couldn't resist running her fingers through her hair. It seemed that he found it comforting and even she wanted to soothe away any discomfort, even if she was the one causing it.
"So.." The tips of her fingers trailed through his bangs, brushing them aside. "Who's Peter?" There seemed to be a sort've fondness to him when he spoke the name earlier and Mali was very curious about Remus' past. She wanted to know all about him, just like she wanted to know all about Theo. "Is he one of your Order members? Have I met him?" The faces of the people at Harry's house that one morning were still sort've fuzzy, honestly. That whole week was one she wanted to block out.

Remus tried his very best to not scratch, to not even think about scratching, while Mali examined him. He tried his very best not to think about anything, really, except the answers to her questions. "After," he confirmed. He'd definitely started itching after taking the potion earlier that day. Still, he spoke gently - more and more, it seemed the potion was the culprit, and he knew Mali wouldn't be exactly overjoyed with that knowledge. She worked hard on this potion and he appreciated everything she did for him. This was just a little hiccup, surely.
She still managed to grin, just slightly, so Remus relaxed. That grin meant a whole lot of things for him. She wasn't about to lose it over the botched potion, which was good, but it also meant she was comfortable enough to smile around him again. They'd made up, they'd established that, but that grin still made the room feel a little less awkward. "You should really start wearing gloves," he grinned back at her. "I think I read on a Ministry pamphlet once that a drop of my blood can burn clear through skin and bone." Nothing to lighten the mood like a little ridiculous werewolf propaganda...
Yeah, things were still a little awkward. His grin dropped as subtly as it had spread, and soon his gaze was drawn back up the wide and empty expanse of the ceiling. An action Mali questioned, and her question made him cringe. How did you really explain to someone that was supposed to be your friend that you still couldn't quite look at them straight? He ignored the question and, thankfully, Mali had others. He cleared his throat and explained his allergy. Mali sounded a little irritated, making Remus frown - and then, the truth was revealed. The potion did have flobberworm mucus in it. Remus forgot all about his emotional turmoil for a minute as the splotches on his arms flared up to remind him he had a might bit more urgent matter to attend to right now. He shoved his hands into the chair cushion to stop from scratching.
"I don't think I'm allergic to anything else," he answered after a moment, when Mali got up to fetch another potion. "Seriously, don't blame yourself." He knew she would. "I think some of my other conditions are a bit more distracting than a little allergy." Remus was a champ at being sick. Be it a cold, the flu, the plague...as long as it wasn't spattergroit...he could handle it. Nothing really compared to the way his body turned on him when the full moon loomed. He hardly had a thought over things like allergies or sniffles; only when they decided to team up with his monthly transformation. A man could only take so much.
Mali returned with the potion and handed it off to him. Remus nodded gratefully at her explanation and downed the thing in one go. Instantaneous relief hit him and he slumped into the chair. Even if Pepper Up potion didn't help with scratchy throats or itchy arms, per say, the warmth it provided was more than enough to give him a few minutes of relief, at least. That, and having Mali's hand back in his hair. Remus was useless at this point, letting it happen and quite possibly enjoying it.
Her question roused him just a bit. Peter? When he heard the name from other people, he felt a sharp pang go right through his heart. But he'd brought it up, hadn't he? Thus far, Remus had been unable to completely reconcile those happiest years of his life, his school years, with what became of his friends afterward. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs were completely separate people from Remus, Peter, James, and Sirius. He could still speak happily about them without even a thought for the tragedy that would become them - until someone else brought it up, of course. Just asking who Peter was was enough, because Remus didn't really know the monster that Peter became. He knew Wormtail.
"No," Remus shook his head slightly. He could look at Mali now, look right at her. He felt very in this moment as well as like he was a million miles away. "He was my friend in school. He's dead now. He died in the war." He seemed to consider something for a moment, chewing on his bottom lip. Mali knew a lot about who he was now - honestly, more than most. It was refreshing to him to have a friend that didn't know his long and sordid past. After some time, though, Remus was finally realizing that wasn't fair. He was undoubtedly shaped by that past and Mali would never fully understand him if she didn't know it. He needed Mali to understand him; that had to be where all their problems lay. "He was on Voldemort's side, then," he finally added, watching her for a response, willing a little bit of that curiosity that she held out of her. It was a lot easier to just answer her questions.

Mali wrinkled her nose at the implication that she should wear gloves, like the very thought offended her. It was one thing she shared with the eccentric Luna Lovegood. "Gloves make everything feel so impersonal." The way she made every patient feel like she was personally invested in their care and recovery was what gave her an edge. It was what made her bedside manner hers, and not just the standard across the board. Little touches, personal warmth. It was second nature to her to touch and to soothe. "It takes the finesse out of it." That's what made everything so hard. Things were awkward, and they needed space and boundaries, not her hands all over him but she didn't know any other way to function. "Oh, right. I've read that pamphlet." She teased in an effort to keep things light and even. "Maybe I shouldn't be standing so close, either. You sneeze wrong and I'll catch your lycanthropy. I'd look terrible in fur."
Remus didn't answer her question and in the interest of not making the situation anymore uncomfortable, she let it go. It was added to the pile of things that were irritating her right this moment. The fact her potion, her form of redemption had made Remus sick sat at the very top of it. He was very kind, trying to play it off like it was no big deal. "That makes it worse, honestly." Oh, she could kick herself! This little hiccup should have been foreseen, maybe not this specific one but things had been going far too well. "Your condition is complicated, we should be taking extra care not to aggravate it. We change up the potion to try and make it better, but it's a risk." He'd taken their potion before, hadn't he? Why the reaction now? Maybe there was more flobberworm in it then last time due to the different ingredients. "And if I would've been thinking properly, we could've minimized that risk by not poisoning you with something you're allergic to."
There was no use worrying about it now, what was done was done. Mali needed to focus on treating the actual splotches, she had a few things in her bag that might be useful but first she could mitigate the uncomfortable symptoms. Pepper Up potion and a little bit of tenderness to take the scratchiness out of everything and perk him up. There was a very marked difference in Remus now, he seemed more serious and he was even able to look at her when she asked about his friend. She laid her hand on his shoulder to give it an affectionate squeeze. "I'm sorry to hear that."
She was unsure if she should press the issue, ask about how he died or something. Some people liked talking about their dead loved ones, remembering them helped them feel closer to the one they lost but Remus hesitated. There was something more. The name made her flinch. Most didn't dare use that name when the man was alive, and even though he was long dead his followers weren't. The mere name still held power and tried to dig up memories of registration committees and hiding. Still, there was something comforting in the way that Remus said the name, like it was an ordinary everyday name like William or Ted. He wasn't afraid of it, even though he had every reason to be. Voldemort killed people he loved, right? Every wizard around his age had stories of loss from one or both wars.
Mali patted his shoulder and withdrew her hand. "Why was he?" It was hard to reconcile the fact that someone who once called Lupin a friend could align with someone who conflicted with everything the man stood for. It didn't compute. But then, Theo didn't align with Death Eaters either and he was forced to do their dirty work back at the hospital. "Was it on his own, or was he cursed into it?" She pulled over a chair to sit next to him, hands folded in her lap. "We can talk about him if you'd like, but we don't have too if you don't want too."

Impersonal. While Remus certainly agreed that Mali's little comforting touches and general gentleness were one of the very best parts of getting taken care of by her - and a very good part of being around her in general - impersonal was probably something they needed to work on. Everything was personal between them now, even a brief holding of an arm or hand against a forehead. He nodded his reluctant understand of what she meant, though, and released a relieved laugh when she responded to his silliness. That was much easier - all friends could make jokes, not all friends could touch each other without making it weird. "Smart girl. The fleas are terrible, too." Remus didn't hate many things more than fleas, in all honesty. He'd been through some rough times.
They'd almost made their way through the awkwardness, almost, but Mali beating herself up over the allergy and the potion made Remus want to do nothing more than let her know all the different ways of brilliant he thought she was. Friends did that, right? He just wasn't sure he could do it entirely as a friend. "Like you said, it's a risk," he shrugged, taking the minimizing of the issue route instead. Not a big deal, nope. Nothing here was a big deal. "I told you from the very beginning, because I agreed to this, I was agreeing to all the risks, too. I think what I'm trying to say is - I've been through worse. It's not a big deal. We'll use it as a learning opportunity." Remus' most very favorite thing.
Mali seemed mostly placated at this point - good, that was one awkward feeling out of the room - and her natural curiosity turned right back on...sort of. Remus couldn't really tell if she actually wanted to know more, or if she was just being polite. She looked uncomfortable when he mentioned Voldemort, but then again, most people did.
And then Mali touched him again, a quick pat on the shoulder, and Remus was renewed in his desire for her to know him, to really know him. As a friend or as anything else, one way or another, Mali was important to him. He stayed silent for a moment, considering how to answer her. Where to start. "Peter was brave in some ways, but a coward in others. Or just selfish. As far as I know, he joined of his own volition. But I couldn't tell you for certain...he betrayed us. I never got an honest word out of him after that."

The awkwardness was so exhausting that Mali desperately clung to whatever bit of normalcy she could get. The one off comment about his blood being dangerous was like a life line and she would white knuckle it for as long as she could. The witch raised her eyebrows while the faintest of smiles tugged at the corner of her lips. "Fleas?" she asked with feigned incredulous edge. "You can get fleas? I thought your blood was too toxic for them?" She crossed her arms over her chest with a full on grin. "Next thing you know the Ministry'll be claiming that your condition can be spread just like the Black Plague. The cats of the world are doomed." Mali gave a one shouldered shrug. "I guess it's good Eoin and I can brew the potion then, yeah? We've got three." It was a regular menagerie in their apartment, surely it was only a matter of time before a lycanthropic flea made it's home in one of the cats or the niffler.
The awkardness couldn't stay away for long. She could have pushed it, argued as to why it was wrong and why her own negligence bothered her so much but it was exhausting. Mali didn't want the awkwardness to hang over them, it was heavy and it threatened to smother out the last little light of their friendship. That friendship was too precious for that so she set aside her stubborness and nodded. It was rather obvious that she was reluctantly surrendering her argument in the interest of keeping the peace and moving on. Her face was still creased with frown and agitation lines as she chewed on the inside of her cheek. Next time they would do better and Remus wouldn't have to take risks. Their goal was to help him, not to make him sicker. It was odd to think of it as him being 'sick' in the first place. Lycanthropy was a weird thing, it wasn't like he was diseased but at the same time it was. All of it was unfair, though.
The silence, somehow, didn't feel awkward. They were treading over a personal subject for Remus and he seemed to be processing that, maybe he was somewhere else or sometime else. Whatever it was, Mali wasn't sure she liked this 'Peter'. He didn't sound like someone who deserved to have Remus as a friend. She listened to him talk, hands curling into fists that sat stiffly in her own lap in an effort to resist reaching out to take his hand. She didn't know how to comfort someone without touching them and it went totally against her nature. Once he was done, Mali didn't know what to say. "I don't think someone can be brave and selfish." she said finally. It might not be the brightest thing she could say, given the fact that Peter had been his friend, but she was desperate to let him know that she was listening, not just sitting there and letting him talk. He would never convince a former Hufflepuff that those two traits could coexist, not when Badgers prided themselves on being the opposite of selfish. "To be brave you've got to care about doing what's right or what's helpful more than you care about the fact that you're afraid. Selfish people don't do what's right, they just do what's right for them. Good people are brave. You know that, Mister Gryffindor."
The word 'betrayed' stuck in her mind. Badgers were loyal, and it sealed the fact that she did not like this Peter one bit. "Do you miss him?" Mali cared for almost everyone she met, and for those that she didn't particularly care for she managed to stir up compassion for. Sometimes, late at night, she even felt sorry for the Death Eaters who did terrible things, but she wasn't sure she could miss a friend that betrayed her in such a deep way. Not when they sided with such a terrible person while the people one was supposed to care about fought against that evil person.

"I wish," Remus sighed, though he was still grinning. He went into a full on laugh as Mali went on about his condition like a regular Ministry official. "Merlin's beard, with that sort of running logic you'll get yourself to bloody Minister of Magic in no time at all." Wouldn't the Ministry just love if lycanthropy was at all like the plague - then they could just exterminate all the werewolves like rats, like they so wanted to anyway. "Yes, please protect the cats," Remus nodded. "I like them too much; I couldn't stand to see them become were-kittens."
This was so easy, and so different from the awkwardness he and Mali had been experiencing as of late, that Remus was seriously considering getting sick more often. It allowed them to set aside those awkward parts of their relationship and focus again on the parts they'd always liked, in the name of good health. Remus liked chatting with Mali just as much as he liked joking with her, even if it was about something heavy. He still wanted her to know him, no matter what. Telling her about Peter seemed as good a place as any to start.
"I think people can be brave sometimes, and selfish other times," he shrugged. "And that people can change - for better and for worse." He smiled at Mali's name for him. "Peter was a Gryffindor. He helped me get through my transformations in school." What Peter did to James, and to Sirius, and to Remus himself - it absolutely broke Remus' heart. But he didn't think he'd ever be able to completely let go of schoolboy Peter and what the boy had meant to him. He didn't really want to let go, not completely. Those memories were the basis of all of Remus' happiness.
"I miss what he was," Remus nodded. That he knew for sure - but how to explain? Remus stared off into space for a moment, considering. He could think of only one thing to connect then and now. "Believe it or not, things were actually even worse for werewolves back then. I wasn't even supposed to be at Hogwarts; it was a big secret. A big secret that my roommates found out anyway, and instead of running away from me, they helped me. Did wonders for my self-esteem, as you can imagine. Peter was a part of that...how could I not miss him?"

"Dunno." Mali shrugged, the ghost of a smile still lingering on her lips as they joked back and forth. Things like this were an echo of a time when they were friends. Just friends, not plagued by tension without bloody feelings and such getting in the way. "I don't think I'd qualify for a position where the requirement is 'Must be an insufferable.....witch'" She wasn't one to insult people normally, but the woman who held the current position of Minister certainly didn't invoke any warm feelings from her. Anything she could say, and Mali had plenty of opinions on the woman, was deserved. "I'm far too cheerful. Have you met Minister Bennett? The woman acts like she's got her wand shoved up her bum." Downright grumpy, she was. Then again, who would protect the cats? "Next thing you know, they'll be writing an act banning you from within a hundred feet of a cat... You know, just in case. To protect the were-kittens."
The lightness didn't last. It never did. She didn't mind so much as the jokes died off and they started talking about far heavier subjects. Remus' past was an interesting part of the man, one she didn't know much about but wanted too. He was still one of the more important people in her life. That never changed through any of the emotional uproar. She didn't really think that people could be brave sometimes and selfish others. To her, both bravery and selfishness were pretty defining traits that didn't often leave room for each other, but Remus was so wise. Maybe he was right. She certainly wasn't going to disparage someone he still managed to hang on to fond feelings for. Especially not while he was sick.
Something he said caught her off guard. In school? Somehow, she imagined Remus having a normal childhood and getting bitten sometime after he'd grown up. "How long have you been a werewolf?" The thought of a child werewolf was tragic and heartbreaking and it made keeping her hands to herself very very difficult. It was uncomfortable, she wanted to reach out and hold his splotchy hand because that's what Mali did, it was how she made people feel better. Instead, her own hands were held stiffly in her lap as she shifted uncomfortably with the conversation. Damned lines. "Were you born one?" The alternative was too awful for her to entertain.. That he was bitten as a young boy. Children should be exempt from such awful things like wars and werewolf bites.
"It's lovely you had people to take care of you." Especially since he was a child, sweet Merlin. "Where are your other roommates now?" The answer was likely obvious, but when you took Mali out of her comforting element she often asked thoughtless questions. "Did they join Peter as well?" Unlikely. One bad egg was one thing, but a whole slew of them? Remus didn't strike her as someone who went around befriending turn coats who fought on the wrong side of wars. Then again, he did say people changed.

The potion was agreeing with him quite nicely - and Remus had to admit, his present company probably had something to do with him feeling better, as well. He missed this with Mali. They were working their way back to this, sure, but things were still a little off. Maybe he just needed to get pitifully sick a few more times and things would be back to the way they used to be. For now, he would take advantage of it as much as he could while she was here, joking and talking through a mind that felt slightly hazy and sleepy with potion and relief. "I think that's the meanest thing I've ever heard you say," Remus raised his eyebrows in surprise, but he was grinning. He absolutely agreed. "She's the worst." Remus exaggerated a pout at the thought of being banned from all cats. "Totally unfair. Cats love me." He did always seem to attract the strays when he was feeling wolfish...
Remus was just as happy for the conversation as the jokes. Mali was as good at asking a million different interesting questions as she was at laughing at all of his silly jokes, and Remus loved questions. And he liked to talk about his past, even if it hurt. What happened after didn't change how happy he was then. Of course, not all of it was happy. Remus paused for a moment when Mali asked him when he got bit - he was surprised it had never come up between them before, though he supposed it made sense. Pretty much every living person he knew had always known him as a werewolf - it almost made sense to think he might have been born as one (supposedly not possible, something Remus still slightly doubted). "No, I was four," he shook his head. Mali looked very uncomfortable with the idea, so he nodded expressively at what she said next. She didn't need to think about all the times he had no one caring for him at all, and he didn't need to think about them, either. He focused on the happy times. "I've been very lucky, given."
Even if they were only talking about the tragic end of it, they were on Remus' favorite subject now. Thinking about his schoolmates was bittersweet in the best way - that was hard to explain to other people, though. It was all so tragic and traumatic but Remus was so indescribably happy to have had them at all. "They're gone now, too." He shook his head. "No, they were part of the Order with me. One was Harry's father, James. The other, Sirius...he died in the second war." Mali might know both of those names, but their stories were so convoluted with time and complexities that Remus was more than willing to take the time to clear their names even if it did hurt him to think about too much.

"You think?" Mali asked, chewing thoughtfully on her lower lip. The raise in eyebrows and surprise from the poor werewolf left her feeling slightly self conscious about her earlier insult. "It was a bit mean, I s'pose." It was frustrating more than anything, the past year had changed her in a way that she didn't necessarily like and her less than kind words illustrated that perfectly. "That woman just brings out the worst in me... In everyone, really." It was sort of the contrary. The woman's actions made an activist out of Mali, someone who was clever enough to position herself within the Ministry and bold enough to acknowledge right and legal weren't the same thing. The departure from the carefree, rule following teenager to the young woman who made back alley deals and brewed illegal potions was a jarring one. "It's strange, isn't it? Cats and dogs don't normally get along, and since wolves are related to dogs, you'd think they'd steer clear of people who turned into a wolf.. But I guess cats are extraordinary judges of character, aren't they?"
Four. Remus was four when he was bitten. An innocent little boy who'd known a normal life and then had it all snatched from him. "Why?" she asked, heart broken for baby Remus and old Remus alike. No one deserved to be bitten, of course, but a child even less so. "Why were you bitten?" It was terrible to ask the victim of violence why they were a victim, but it was so hard to wrap her head around it. "Was it only you? They didn't have wolfsbane back then, did they?" Mali had done a lot of research on the potion and it was a rather new creation, given how long the affliction had been around. "What did you do for transformations?" Her tender little heart squeezed at the idea of a four year old tearing themselves to shreds once a month.
The witch mangled the hem of her shirt as they spoke, twisting it up in an effort to keep her hands within the lines and completely to herself because it was hard not to reach out and comfort him. To wrap him up in a hug that told him how sorry she was for his past and how strong he was as a person... To apologize for further complicating an already hard life by getting confused and needy and unsure. She listened with a frown. James Potter, everyone'd heard of him when the story of how a baby defeated the dark wizard Voldemort was retold. James and Lily Potter, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their son... Remus' daughter's name suddenly made sense. It was preciously cute, but a tribute to those he lost. The second name knit her eyebrows in confusion. "Sirius.. I've heard that name before. Probably not the same one.. Oh, what was his whole name?" She had to dig back through her memories of Hogwarts and the man that terrorized the school for a year. "The one I'm thinking about was a Death Eater who escaped Azkaban... Sirius something or another. He was the reason there were dementors that year." It was a wonder anyone came back after those terrifying things lurked through the grounds of Hogwarts. "It's an unusual name, I didn't realize it was so common."

Remus nodded his full agreement - their current Minister brought out more than the worst in everybody, really. She brought out the downright nasty. Mali looked like she was giving his comment a little too much thought, though, so he chuckled and shrugged. "For what it's worth, if that's your absolute worst...I think you're still the nicest person I've ever met in my life." That was true. Remus didn't really know why he said it, but it was true. Mali had this way about her - whether she was dismantling an oppressive government or just teasing you, you really couldn't get mad at her. You just knew she was only doing it because it was in your best interest. "You must be a cat, then," Remus said, grinning, about the cats and their judgments. The potion was really hitting him now, the relief he finally got from it sending him a bit silly, but there were little truths in whatever he said. Beyond the obvious and impossible, it would make sense for Mali to be a cat, right? That would explain why they were always drawn back to each other. Right. Exactly.
Thinking about his past grounded his airy head a bit, giving him something solid and real to anchor to instead of strange musings about what Mali would look like as a cat (fluffy, definitely fluffy). It was far from a painless anchor, for sure, but Mali seemed more than willing to trudge through the pain with him. He really didn't want to upset her, but he did want Mali to know him, all parts of him - and some parts of Remus could be very upsetting. "Revenge, on my father. He had a...different view of werewolves, before I became one. He insulted the man who turned me, and he got his revenge by making my father raise a werewolf son." That story still left a bitter taste in Remus' mouth when he told it; he would never get over the unfairness of it. He shook his head at Mali's next question. "Wolfsbane was only invented once I was an adult. When I was very young, my mother and father could mostly contain me during my transformations. Once I got older and stronger, I mainly went into the wilderness, as far from humans as I could get. And I learned how to contain myself, wherever the walls were strong enough." Hogwarts, mostly. Remus learned every inch of the protections Dumbledore put on the Shack.
It was sort of surreal for Remus, looking back on all that had happened to him in his lifetime. When he considered it all at once, like he was doing now, it seemed like an awful lot for a man in his early forties. That was both good and bad, he supposed. He quieted and watched Mali carefully as she considered the names he had given her, suddenly nervous about telling her about Sirius. Should he even try to explain? Would she even believe him? "Black. Sirius Black." Remus nodded. "That's my Sirius, one and the same. You're probably not going to believe me, and I know I sound crazy, but he wasn't actually a Death Eater. Essentially...Peter framed him. For all of it. Sirius was a good man."
