Things felt like they were settling down. She and Theo had made up almost the whole way, there was very little that still felt awkward or fragile between them and the same with Mister Lupin. Their latest batch of wolfsbane had made him sick, an allergy or the potion ingredients having a poor interaction but the full moon had come and gone and he survived the ordeal relatively intact. Mali was even sort of getting the hang of the Medi-Witch thing. She hadn't been handed anything too difficult or dangerous and although she had a sneaking suspicion that Theo may have had something to do with it, she didn't mind it that much. So far, she'd proven him wrong. This was definitely something she could handle, right? Fate didn't like to be tempted like that, and it lashed back in the worst way. Mali left one job and went directly to another, she had only just managed to pull on her healer Medi-Witch robes when the news broke that something'd happened at the apothecary. Death Eaters had launched a small surprise attack on Diagon Alley and a stray spell must've hit a volatile potion just right and boom, there was an explosion. According to eyewitness reports people were still dueling, the death eaters still attacking and Aurors (and probably Order too.) were fighting back. They were supposed to wait until the fighting died down but people who had dedicated their lives to helping others didn't have a lot of patience when it came to those sorts of things. Slowly people in acid green robes started appearing in Diagon Alley to start putting people back together and move them to safety. Mali was one of the last to pop over. If you asked, she would've told you that she was hoping to find Theo before she went but truthfully it was out of nerves. The minute she materialized in the alley it was like she was thrown back in time to the incident at The Eye. It was loud and it was chaotic. Broken bodies were strewn about, mixed in with the debris from the ruined shop. She actually had to step over what looked like a hand that'd been blown off to get to the nearest body. A man with long hair that fell over his face in such a way to obscure it, lying on a pile of rubble. The hair looked familiar and it froze Mali in her tracks. It couldn't be him, that would be absurd. Somehow the fact that Death Eaters were attacking the area didn't quite connect for her, she was too preoccupied with telling herself how silly it was. She saw the man everywhere when he was nowhere to be seen. Any wizard with the same shade of hair made her heart jump into her throat. She was being delusional, it wasn't him. She willed her feet to move, one lead filled foot in front of the other 'til she could take to her knees next to him. The pulse pounding in her ears managed to drown out the sounds of the duels around her, all she could hear was her the panicked thumping over her own heart as she reached a shaky hand out to peel back the greasy curtain. All the air felt like it was being sucked out of her lungs. It was him. His face was burned into her memory. Cold and unmistakable. It was him and he was hurt and she was a Medi-Witch. It was her job to take care of him, her obligation. He was bleeding. But how could she take care of someone who tried to kill her? Mali was hyperventilating at the very thought, leaning back on her heels to put distance between them. The stench of his unwashed, bloodied body clouded her brain and slowed it down. Her head felt heavy and lethargic, unable to comprehend the moral dilemma dropped in her lap. Her gaze was fixated on speckles of red across the man's cheek, it could've been anyone's blood. His or an aurors and months ago it could've been Theo's or Draco's or hers. Mali had an obligation and a deep innate need to take care of people, to help those in need. All people, she didn't ask for their political affiliation or a run down of their past crimes before she cared for them and he certainly appeared to be in need. Plus, she had to prove that she could do 'This'. All of it, not just the easy parts. Though her hands shook and breathing ragged, Mali inched closer to @keegan to try and determine if he was still breathing. She leaned close and went to check for a pulse when he moved, and Mali soon found his hands closing around her throat. ___________________________________________________ Also Theo Ashland in a post or two? Keegan felt like he was going to explode. He'd been so good these past couple of months, laying (generally) low while the world ripped itself apart and his comrades planned out what to do with the wreckage. People were scared and distrusting, and angry. There was a lot they could do with a little anger. Keegan himself didn't do much planning and plotting, really, but he did throw in a suggestion every now and again. And lo and behold - turns out, if you suggest blowing something up enough times, it actually happens!
Okay, so the explosion in the apothecary wasn't part of the actual plan - just a happy coincidence. But still. Keegan couldn't help but feel partially responsible for such happy tidings - after he woke up from taking part of a metal shelf to the forehead, of course. The plan had been to attack the apothecary just to put a little fear into the people, remind them they were still there, and maybe destroy a stockpile or two of those precious ingredients for that werewolf potion everyone was clamoring after. Just to add a little lasting chaos.
But the Aurors were hot on their heels. The bastards were no longer playing games. They'd gone a bit soft, much to Keegan's opinion and glee, after the war ended. Now it felt like war was starting up all over again. Keegan and his friends had barely got started before someone was trying to fight them off. And then - boom! Someone's spell took out a row of potions that didn't appreciate the disturbance one bit. The explosion took most of the shop down, and most of the people in it down with it.
Keegan was one such person, but he wasn't down for long. The shelf hadn't hit him very hard - he thought it was surprise that took him down more than anything, really. He woke up quickly and once he got the ringing out of his ears, he was ready to go again. Right when he opened his eyes, he saw something that made him think he was in a dream. The pretty little thing they'd taken right off the street some months ago had just popped into being in the Alley - and was coming right to him. Yes. He was being rewarded for his being good all those months afterward, and for his good ideas that brought him exactly to this moment. He just knew it. Keegan snapped his eyes back shut and sprawled himself out on the rubble.
He didn't move a muscle until he could feel her hovering over him. When a stray wisp of hair tickled him across the face, Keegan's eyes flung open and his hands moved almost of his own accord, like they knew right where they belonged - around her pretty little throat. Keegan sat up and moved so he was the one doing the hovering over her. "Sweetheart, you came to my rescue! I knew you liked me." Keegan pressed into her windpipe, all that wasted time of being good mixing with all that bitterness of not killing her the last time he saw her, creating something awful and black that poisoned his every system.

This was a terrible idea, and there was a loud and desperate voice in the back of her mind screaming at her to stop, leave him and go help someone else. Or find someone else, she was totally alone in this. Sure, there were people all over, but they were all absorbed in their own thing. Medi-Wizards were bent over, hands quick and steady over their own patients while aurors traded hexes with Death Eaters. No one even seemed to notice her as she had her moral crisis. Could she really turn her back on someone, even someone as vile as him? It could prove to be a lethal decision for the man, if he wasn't dead already.
Mali chewed on her lower lip and her gaze drifted off towards the battles raging on around her. She recognized some of the people who were fighting, on both sides. Anxiety was squeezing all of the air out of her lungs, but she could do this. If they could be brave and fight off death, then she could attend to someone who was unconscious. She didn't have to be gentle or linger, just make sure he wouldn't die and then move on. Her plan was derailed when he woke up, if he was even really unconscious in the first place. She saw his hands as they neared her neck but Mali remained completely frozen in place, eyes wide. This was unreal and she was paralyzed, unable to fight back.
His hands wrapped around her neck, smothering out a scream before it made it to her lips. When Keegan moved, putting her on her back with him above her, it was like a switch was flipped. She woke up and found her will to fight. Mali twisted and flailed, trying to throw off his grip or wiggle out of it. It only took a few moments before her lungs burned for air, making her desperate. Panic seeped into her blood stream and Mali grabbed a handful of Kearney's hair and jerking it, her free hand coming up to rake her nails across his flesh and claw at his cheek. Anything to make him let go, even for a moment. She only needed one gulp of air so she could continue to fight him, just one. A wide-eyed, fearful gaze swept the area around them, frantic for someone to notice and come to help. Everyone was too preoccupied with keeping themselves or their patients alive.
She tried to scream, to call for help but it came out as a faint, strangled squeak that even she could barely hear over the roar of the fight around them.

Just like Mali, Theo was one of the last people to pop over to Diagon Alley once the news of the attack hit. That's because he was looking for Mali, running around the hospital and asking everyone he saw if they'd seen her leave. He didn't want her to go out there. Theo was trying his hardest to accept that this job was something Mali really wanted to do, but he was still having a hard time. Especially in emergencies like this - all he could see was Mali back at the London Eye, panicking. He was slowly accepting that she really could do anything she put her mind to; but he was fully convinced she needed to work her way up to it. Not throw herself into the middle of the fray.
He couldn't find her. Mali was nowhere in the hospital, and that only meant one thing. They were all hands on deck, so there was no doubt in his mind where she'd gone off to. He was stone silent as he rushed through getting everything together to head off there himself. He wasn't angry, he was scared. He kicked hard off the hospital floor and popped into being into the chaos of Diagon Alley.
As worried as he was about Mali, he had a job to do. Whenever Theo was in the thick of it, he turned into an entirely different being. The chaos around him inspired calmness within. His movements were confident and automatic, as if he'd been in this exact situation so many times before he just knew exactly what to do. The only hint of nerves on him lay in his eyes. As Theo stalked among the rubble, getting a feel for the human damage, his eyes were everywhere. Where was Mali? He could help others and still keep track of her at the same time, if he could just find her first.
Theo stuck close to the perimeter of the explosion - there was still fighting going on, and it wasn't in their protocol to interfere with all that. He could help those along the edge for the time being. Theo wasn't a fighter, anyway. Yes, yes, he was a very punchy person - but that was pure emotion, not something calculated and aggressive like what was going on around him.
In fact, there was a struggle going on at his very feet. Theo ducked around a twisted mass of metal shelving to see if anyone had been caught under it, and instead found two people rolling around on the ground, locked in a struggle. A bigger man was trying to pin a smaller woman to the ground, his hands around her throat, but the woman was having none of it. She was scratching and pulling and flailing her heart out. This fight looked very strange to Theo, and he paused in confusion. He wasn't supposed to interfere, but this looked nothing like the way the Aurors around him were fighting. They weren't rolling around on the ground.
In one sweeping moment, the man's head jerked out of the way (thanks to the woman's killer grasp on his hair) and Theo saw the face beneath him. Oh, gods. He felt his heart jump clear out of his throat, and in another sweeping moment, Theo was on the pair. He caught the man - it was one of the Death Eaters, from that horrid house - in surprise, kicking him in the face and sending him sprawling off of Mali. Theo wasn't a fighter. He wasn't. But at the moment, his blood felt so hot it might evaporate clear out of his veins and he could think of nothing else except how enraged he felt, seeing that man on top of Mali again.
She was the only possible thing to keep him sane in that moment. Theo wanted nothing more than to go after the greasy git and beat his face in, but he had to check on Mali. He had to help her, and he had to help other people - and hopefully, the fucking Aurors would do their job with the greasy gits. "Can you breathe? Can you talk?" Theo went down to his knees next to Mali, back to the Death Eater and everything else going on around them, leaving himself vulnerable - not that he wasn't feeling pretty damn vulnerable already, looking down at Mali.

Li Yue loved chaos. This little excursion into Diagon Alley wasn't her plan, but she was happy to go along with it as long as she got to cause a little panic. They hadn't intended the attack to... well.. blow up in such a way, just a quick in and out to show they were still relevant, still something to be feared. They couldn't have the wizarding world growing so content and secure, not as long as she still skulked about. Everything had been going grand, people ran and shrieked and panicked and then a stray curse literally blew up the apothecary. Allies and enemies laid bleeding together on the rubble and seeing an opportunity to slink off in the flurry activity, Yue retreated off to lurk next to some large debris for cover.
It wasn't enough to watch, but the monster that lived inside of her craved something more than just fighting off the auors. Eventually acid green entered the fray. It wasn't her favorite color, but red would look beautiful splattered against it. She just had to pick out the right victim. Cold, soulless eyes scanned the battle field for the perfect plaything, settling on a slight witch cautiously approaching one of her more familiar fallen comrades. Yue had seen Keegan move minutes before but now he looked limp and dead. A wonderful idea, as far as she was concerned! She got a rush when Keegan struck, wrapping his hands around the little witch's neck. Pleasurable shivers ran down her spine and it got her heart going, although Keegan had trouble keeping his victim under control. It was typical, a disgrace. How could one call themselves a Death Eater when little girls could get the better of you?
A sneer darkened her features and Yue took a single step forward before a large, tall man joined the struggle. He kicked Keegan hard in the face, sending the death eater sprawling away like a rag doll. The 'players' in the little game were both familiar, they had been guests in their headquarters for a time until the worms were rescued by The Order. Her lips twisted into a cruel and delighted smile as she picked her way through the wreckage to quietly approach the pair of Medi-Healers.
Yue withdrew her wand as she made it over to the large one. Her hand quivered in anticipation, she could barely contain her excitement. It was time for her favorite spell just yet. She had to dominate him first, break his spirit and crush his soul before she had fun torturing him. The Death Eater grabbed a handful of Theo Ashland's hair, jerking his head back painfully as she jabbed the tip of her wand into his spine. Yue lowered herself to whisper in his ear while maintaining her grip. "Listen very carefully, my love. If you do exactly as I say, I may feel generous enough to spare one of you." Her voice was low and breathy, purring in his ear as she added "but I don't make any promises." What choice did he have? She had control of him, Yue had the upper hand and the witch underneath him wasn't going to be any help.

The edges of her vision were going dark, sending Mali into a panic. Her limbs grew heavy and she felt very tired but she was determined. This wasn't going to be her end, she hadn't survived the farm house to die on her back with a Death Eater hovering above her. Broken rubble cut into her skin, her throat felt like it was collapsing under his fingers but she still fought. Mali jerked, Mali pulled and Mali struggled to scream. Each time his grip was loosened even a little bit was a victory and each tiny breath was a gift used to fuel her resistance. Her lungs ached but she fought for her right to live, to walk away from today. Her chances grew bleaker the longer he managed to hold on and she abandon the offensive to try and just fend his hands off. She grabbed at his, clawed at them and tried to work her fingers between underneath his. All she needed was a little space, just enough to breathe.
Her struggle was dying down, her grip was weakening and then Keegan Kearney was gone completely. One minute everything was going hazy and dimming, the next she could breathe. Mali breathed in painful gasps, the air burned in her lungs. The presence above her was replaced by someone else and Mali threw up her hands defensively to try and shield herself from the new attacker, a shriek dying in her bruised and crushed trachea in favor of several hard coughs. Tears streamed down her cheeks, blurring her vision but the sound of Theo's voice was unmistakable. Mali grabbed onto his robes, it was really him. No one else noticed, but Theo would always be around to keep her safe? Did this prove him right, that she shouldn't have been out there? She didn't care. All she knew was that Theo was here, and that the pain in her throat and her lungs meant she was still alive.
Theo wasn't alone, though. Another twisted face loomed right behind him. Mali's eyes grew wide, she wanted to warn him but her words came out as strangled whispers punctuated with painful coughs. The dark witch was upon them and it was too late. Theo was held at wand point and Mali couldn't think, she only reached for her own wand that lay just inches out of reach, dropped in the struggle with the man from before.

The Death Eater with the dark, greasy hair lay very close to Mali - and very still, save for a groan or two. Blood poured from his forehead where Theo's boot caught and split the skin. Theo would have been proud of such a well-aimed kick, given the chaos, if he hadn't been so worried Mali was about to die right there in his shadow. Her coughing sounded terrible, her breathing even worse, and her panic obviously wasn't helping.
Theo was torn a thousand different ways. He wanted to get Mali out of there but he wasn't even sure she could breathe, much less move. He wanted to make sure she wasn't going to die atop the rubble of a ruined building. He wanted to make sure the dirty bloke off to their side was going to stay down, for good. He wanted to make this all stop.
Mali made a good part of his decision for him. At first she seemed afraid of him and that worried him, but then she was grabbing onto his robes and he was hauled downward in surprise, right in her face. She was moving. A long-held breath shuddered out of Theo and both of his hands shot between them, working to clear tears and dust and dirt from her face. It looked like she was already bruising underneath, the skin of her throat going purple. "Okay - it's okay, baby. Don't move too much, I need you to show me you can talk if you can." She was trying to, but he couldn't hear what she was saying. She looked so scared. Theo leaned in further, trying to hear her, until his head was wrenched upward and a voice that was not Mali's at all sent cold shockwaves through his system.
Why, why did he never have his fucking wand out when he actually needed it? Theo was reminded of how uselessly empty his hand was when he felt the tip of a wand shoved into his spine. He was being held up and back in such a way that rendered most of his body useless - his vulnerable kneeling position taking care of the rest of that for him. Theo had no choice but to sit still and listen to that terrible voice. It made him want to vomit, just hearing it, not even regarding the words she was saying. He watched Mali out of the very corners of his vision, her hand scrabbling across rubble trying to find her wand, fingers inches from the man who tried to kill her - now stirring, of course. "Someone's going to see you," he tried to reason with the woman behind him, shifting in her grip but not daring to move too much. "They watch us now. All the time. They're going to notice." Theo was largely pulling all of this out of thin air, but it was all he could think of. Trying to reason with the unreasonable. One glance around would indicate that the Aurors were all rather preoccupied at the moment.

Oh, how sweet. Two lovers among the rubble, the troll trying to soothe the frightened lamb. No amount of soothing would dull the terror, though. Not with a snake slithering her way almost soundlessly through the debris, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. She was adept at moving stealthily, although the battle around them provided more than an enough cover for her to skulk around unnoticed. Her victim was caught completely off guard, the girl put up a valiant effort to warn him but didn't quite succeed. Yue relished the feeling of control that it gave her, to hold someone so large and imposing at her mercy. There weren't many other aspects of life that brought the witch any sense of satisfaction or any feeling at all, really. Yue felt hollow and empty and numb most of the time, although she craved the ability to feel emotions. Life had been cruel, it broke her and robbed her of the capacity to feel anything beyond these violent moments.
He tried to reason with her, tell her they were being watched. She cackled right in his ear, leaning low enough so he felt every breathy word. "No one is looking at you, my darling." The Death Eater jerked his head left and right, forcing him to gaze upon the devastation surrounding him. People were engaged in a battle for their own lives, concentrating on not tripping over rubble and bodies while locked in ferocious duels. Movement in the corner of her vision grabbed her attention, the witch underneath them had managed to wrap her fingers around the handle of her own wand.
Yue tsked and shifted her stance so she could still hold Theo captive while bringing the heel of her boot down on the girl's hand like one would stomp on an insect. The injured witch dropped the wand and withdrew her hand, cradling it. "She broke the rules." she sighed, shaking her head before returning to Theo's ear. "We can't allow for that." The rules of her twisted little game were simple, but breaking them required retribution. She trailed the tip of her wand up the wizard's spine, hmm-ing. "They say your mind is very easy to control, my love." The wand tip tapped against the base of his skull. "One little spell, a few whispers and you were practically ready to take the Mark. But where's the fun in that, mm?"
It was much more satisfying to force his mind when he was completely aware and helpless to stop it. Yue's fingers unwound from his hair, trailing down the side of his face. She contemplated her options, she could have him hurt the little one, smack her hard across the face or there was a sharp knife tucked away in the pocket of her own robes... blood looked lovely spilled across young flesh... but there was a wand to take care of, to get it off the playing field first. Baby steps, she needed to break their spirit first. "I want you to take her wand and snap it in half. Now."

Theo could actually feel bile rising in his throat when the woman laughed in his ear. Never had he had such a visceral reaction to something like a voice, but her's did him in something nasty. There was rot and decay in her breathless tone. She twisted his head around to call him out on his lie and Theo just wanted to shut his eyes. He felt dizzy. He kept them open to look back at Mali and hold her gaze. "They'll notice," he said again, weaker this time. He might have been talking to both of them, the woman laying in front of him and the one with her wand in his back. That one shifted suddenly and Theo winced for what was to come - but it wasn't for him, it was for Mali. He made a strangled noise as he watched the woman's boot heel come down on Mali's hand. "Stop, please stop. Don't hurt her." Theo was so helplessly playing into what this people wanted, always, and he knew it and it was painful. They thrived on his begging and pleading, on the torture they could inflict that was far beyond the physical. But he couldn't sit there and watch them hurt Mali, it crushed his insides and made him feel like he couldn't breathe.
The other man had roused again and he was sitting up, kneeling next to Theo, almost looking as if the three of them were leaning over and helping an injured Mali to someone who didn't know what they were looking at. They couldn't see the wand in Theo's spine or how tight a grip the woman had on him. They couldn't hear the words she whispered that froze him like stone. "No," was all he could say, all he could force out. She was going to make him go under the spell again. He didn't think he could fight it this time. Theo felt like he never really recovered from that day in the hospital. He'd changed, for better and for worse, and his mind felt different. He couldn't do it again.
She wasn't going to make him, though. It wasn't fun enough. Theo groaned because that meant absolutely nothing good at all. He had two choices here - lose control of his mind and do whatever she wanted, or do whatever she wanted and be completely cognizant of it. Theo would never be able to tell you which was worse. The woman let go of his hair but Theo's spine remained twisted and rigid - the wand was still there. He cringed away from her fingers on his face and kept his eyes on Mali, trying to keep his face as neutral as possible as the woman gave him a command. It was terrible in its mildness - from a broken wand, it could only get worse from here. That, and a broken wand further dwindled their chances of getting out of this alive.
Doing what the woman wanted would keep them alive, though, there was at least a slim chance of that. She may very well kill them or dragged them off to kill somewhere else, but Theo could buy them time. Without taking his eyes off of Mali, he rolled her wand across the ground and picked it up. He held it in both hands and bent it, not applying anymore pressure than necessary, until it snapped. He shook his head at Mali, apologizing and apologizing under his breath.

The large bloke was doing his best to get under her skin with his defiant. He repeated himself, trying to encourage his companion that they would be noticed, someone would come rescue them from the big bad snake. Yue tightened her grip, nearly tearing the hair from the roots in her anger. She wrenched his head back, gritting her teeth as she spoke. "No one is going to notice!" It was a temporary lapse of control on her part, but she didn't like to be defied. There was no room for rebellion in her little game and it would not be derailed by such a big, ugly excuse for a wizard. He openly consorted with muggleborns, the trash. She relaxed her grip a bit and leaned low, her eyes on the girl as she spoke next to her ear. "This isn't a fairy tale, my love. No one's going to swoop up and rescue you so you can live happily ever after."
Yue tsked and sighed, turning her attention back to the tall one. The Death Eater jerked his head back to force him to look at her. "You must tell her, my love." The witch forced him to look at the girl again. "Tell her no one's going to notice. Tell her no one's coming. Tell her you're both at my mercy." Her bony fingers worked themselves even deeper into his hair and she gave his head a little shake to emphasize her words. "Tell her!" And another "Do it!" Jerking and jeering, she wouldn't let him look away. He had to be looking the little lamb in the eye. Let their spirits break together. "Savor this moment, my love." She spoke sweetly. "This may be the last time you get to look her in the eye again. Even if you survive, we're rising to power. Soon no one will be allowed to rut around with filthy mudbloods, we'll lock them all up." Her voice softened again, a little hint of sympathy in it, if her black heart was capable of such a thing. "She only uses you for your magic, my sweet. Only to steal it. Not to worry, my darling. You don't have to fret about that. You won't escape us a second time. We should have killed you long ago." Keegan had joined them by now, making her bolder. "Bout 'time you fucking woke up, maggot." It was easier to control two people with help, although she was doing a beautiful job on her own.
The witch beneath them reached for her wand and was punished severely for it. The larger one, Theo, begged. Yue cackled, throwing her head back and basking in the glory of it all. He was begging for them not to hurt her. "Stop! Please stop!" the witch mocked shrilly, cackling the whole way. "Oh, save your begging for later, my love. We've only just begun." Delight! Theo did as she told him, reluctantly, "Do it!" she jeered again. "Mudbloods aren't worthy of wands, break it!" She snatched the broken pieces from his hands and threw them at the witch with dirty blood. Yue drove her wand tip harder into the man's spine. "Now let's see how loud you have to scream before someone can hear you, hmm? Crucio!"

All Mali wanted was her wand. She could hardly choke out an incantation but it would make her feel better... Safer. She couldn't block out the witch's words, that no one was coming to save them so maybe holding her wand would help her keep her head or maybe she could slip it to Theo and he could use it to free himself. She was useless on the ground. The man's hands weren't on her throat anymore but it still felt compressed, crushed under his fingers and sensitive from the bruising. Moving her head hurt, breathing felt tight and painful, and fear was coursing through her veins. All she wanted was her wand, and what she got in return was a sharp pain as the Death Eater crushed her hand under her boot. Mali's yelp got caught in her throat, squeaking out of her swollen, injured trachea.
She withdrew her hand and cradled it against her. Mali closed her eyes tightly, trying to fight the tears back as the escaped down her cheeks. It hurt, everything hurt. Everything felt unreal, like a bad nightmare. The throbbing pain in her hand was very clear, dashing all hopes that it was in fact a nightmare. This was very real, it was actually happening. Theo was really being held at wand point above her. Her greasy haired assailant was really pushing up onto his knees. Help was really just meters away but too absorbed in their own struggle for survival to notice. The word 'mudblood' made her cringe, a throw back to a few years ago where they were persecuting mudbloods and locking them away to rot with the dementors in Azkaban. It affected her more that the word 'kill'.
"No" Mali croaked out when the witch ordered Theo to break her wand. "No, Theo." The words were scratchy in her throat. He watched her and she hesitated, afraid of getting her hand stomped on again but reluctant to let him take it and snap it in two. It took her a long moment but she reached for it just as Theo'd rolled it out of her reach. "Please don't." Mali begged. "Theo, please don't." She sat up now, paying no mind to the Death Eaters around them and speaking straight to Theo. She managed to speak louder than before but her voice still felt thick and painful in her throat. "You can't." He did, Theo broke both the wand and Mali. She made a single sorrowful cry that sounded more like a whine when the wood gave away, breaking in two.
Mali turned her head away with a squeal when the Death Eater stole away the remains of her wand and threw them at her. They clattered to the floor. Her fingers had only just closed around one of the fractured pieces when an unforgivable word spilled from the other witches lips. To see Theo harmed in such a way was a pain very different from when Keegan was strangling her, but it hurt just as intensely. Mali crumbled under the sound of it, slapping her hands over her ears and trying to shake the sound out of her head. The cries cut through the feeble barrier and beat mercilessly against her ear drum. It goaded her onto her feet and before she knew what she was doing desperation to help drove her forward and Mali lunged at the witch, using the broken wand like a weapon.

The Death Eater was pulling viciously at his hair, something Theo did to himself in moments of meltdown. If her hands weren't wrapped through his locks right now, his would be there. He just couldn't do this anymore. He felt like breaking to pieces right there among the rubble of the shop. Nothing he did mattered, the Death Eaters never listened to his pleading and begging or even his reasoning and threatening, and they never would. And they would never stop coming for him, either. And for Mali. They were trapped right out in the open and in their own lives, always, forever.
The only thing keeping Theo in the moment was the pain. He had every intention of screaming until his lungs gave out and he passed out, but the tight grip the woman had on him ran all the way down into his throat, constricted with terror. His ears were blocked to her words and to much of the noise all around them, his senses refusing to process all this as if he'd betrayed them. He kept shaking his head at Mali, surely whatever the woman was saying was something she didn't need to hear. Theo responded only to the woman's direct commands, his brain too shut down to comprehend anything other than 'do it'.
He did it. He snapped Mali's wand in half with his bare hands. He could hear her perfectly clear, all her begging him not to do it. But he had to, had to, so desperate for any possible hope of this going anyway other than both of their deaths. Maybe the wand would be enough. Theo continued to mumble apologies to Mali up until the moment his blood set fire - then, he screamed. Loudly. He buckled at the middle and fell forward, nearly toppling right over Mali right before she jumped to her feet. Theo was still screaming, writhing on the rubble below him and cutting himself on the rock and metal, as Mali tried to fight the witch. Still screaming, as the other Death Eater crawled after her and went for her legs.

Gabriel's method for staying alive in things like this were to watch out for things that were out of the ordinary. Duels raging around him were ordinary, there was one every couple hundred feet, it felt like. But someone charging him or someone else, that wasn't normal. Flashes of color weren't normal either. He watched out for flashes of green, especially. Apothecaries were very green with oozing ingredients and dried plants and all that and sometimes the colors ran together. There was chaos all around him but inside he felt steady and calm. Focused. This is the sort of thing he lived for and he was able to shut out any feeling of fear or uneasiness or doubt. Those would be felt later, for now all he could feel was determination and maybe a little exhilaration.
The tall, fair auror picked his way through the rubble, leaving a stupefied Death Eater or two in his wake. His cockiness didn't serve him well and he eventually got himself pinned down behind some large debris. He was doing his best to keep his attackers.. two or three of them, by the looks of it, at bay but one could only do so much by themselves. The duel (if one could call being outnumbered a duel.) went on for several minutes before an older, battle worn man seemed to come out of nowhere to help him. The blonde had just ducked below a red colored curse that came so close he could feel the heat radiating off of the spell's light and when he looked up? A wizard who looked strangely like he could be at home both on the battle field and in a library surrounded by books he intended to wade through with a good cup of tea was blasting his attacked off his feet. They both fought valiantly against the assailants, working in sync together without uttering a word between them.
Once they managed to subdue them, Gabriel leaned back against the rubble used as cover, blue eyes alert for the next threat. He had to move, to find other aurors and regroup. Not far off from them there was something very out of the ordinary. A man writhing on the ground, two witches grappaling and another crawling towards them. Very.. very strange. Unsettling and not right at all. "Hey.." he nudged his new partner in battle with his elbow before pointing off to the very strange sight. "What's going on there? Do you know?" There was an explosion in the distance behind him and when he peaked up over the debris they had been using for cover he saw several of his own fellow aurors battling with a slew of Death Eaters.
"You help them, I'm going there." Gabriel was off and running to join them, calling over his shoulder towards the (admittedly handsome in a strange sort of way) man who'd essentially saved his life. "Thanks for your help! Buy you a drink sometime?" before wading into the battle, wand at the ready.
