Even after 8 years, Grimmauld place was still full of ... interesting ... surprises. Just last year they'd discovered a cellar full of rather suspicious Potions ingredients (they'd Vanished the lot, because looking too closely was a mite disturbing) and the year before that they'd finally managed to repair the tapestry only to find that some of the high and mighty ancestors on the Black tree shot sparks onto unsuspecting passers-by. Because Grimmauld place was so consistently busy (Harry lived there, yes, but it was also an Order base/good place to host large gatherings a la Weasley) it was a constant struggle to make it safe. Especially due to the occasional young child that came by. The small Lupins, Harry's god-children, were sweet, but he didn't want to be the first wizard to accidentally feed his god-children to a carnivorous cupboard, and so he was constantly childproofing. It came in handy for Ron and the Twins, as well... which was why he was currently up to his waist in a cupboard, trying to clean something suspicious off the back wall to uncover what he thought was a secret panel. Why it was in the spare room, he didn't know... but it was trying to eat him. He'd been attacking it for the better part of 30 minutes when he heard a voice calling from downstairs. Unperturbed, as Grimmauld place was (once more) safe, Harry hollered (head still in the cupboard) " I'M UPSTAIRS," and resumed his wriggling, waiting for someone to arrive and hopefully help him blast the cupboard into smithereens. Remus really needed to start seriously thinking about who he was leaving his children with. They were old enough now to become very impressionable. He of course trusted every single Weasley with his own life, as well as theirs - but a certain redheaded set of twins seemed to already be rubbing off on his kids. Even at five years old, they were fully capable of pulling one over on Daddy - and finding it absolutely hilarious to do so. Their new favorite trick? Morphing into one another, back and forth, so he could never tell them apart. Remus understood now why Molly stuck her children in clothing that loudly bore their initials. How else was one supposed to tell the difference?
Redheads weren't part of the plan today - though, Remus wouldn't be all that surprised to find one at Sirius' old place once he got there. There always seemed to be at least one around. But no, the plan had been for Harry, the twins' godfather, to come over and help him watch the kids today. Now that they were capable of walking - and running, and jumping, and skipping madly - it was far easier on Remus to have a partner in crime to watch them with. After waiting nearly half an hour, though, it seemed Harry wasn't coming. Concern settled in the pit of Remus' stomach. He would always worry about Harry, even if they one day managed to completely eradicate the world of anything left to worry about (that was their goal, anyway). So, Remus packed up the twins without much fanfare or struggle - Daddy maybe looked a little scary when he was worried, he was sure that helped - and popped them all over to the first place he thought to check. He had godfathers on the brain, it seemed.
Once inside, with a twin in each hand, Remus called out - for Harry, specifically, but anyone would do. There was a yell from upstairs, and the twins took off up the stairs toward it, Remus close behind. He may have been getting old, but Merlin bless his long legs that still let him take stairs two at a time. He intercepted his kids at the top of the stairs, hand-in-hand again as they followed the sounds of a minor struggle to one of the rooms - in which they found Harry, halfway through a cupboard. He seemed to still be all in one piece, and Remus relaxed into a grin. "Lose your favorite jumper?"

As Harry hung half out of the cupboard, pondering life, it occurred to him that he had forgotten something rather important in the midst of his crusade agains the Noble House of Black. The twins who he was childproofing the damn House for were also supposed to be his responsibility (partially, at least - Harry wasn't sure he could handle two twins on their own. He was constantly filled with respect for Molly's talents) today, and he was late. Well, he would be late for sure if he could see Fabian Prewett's watch in the dim light of the cupboard...
Thankfully, there were three sets of footsteps coming to his rescue, and Harry sighed in relief at the sound of 2x lighter steps and one long stride. Relaxing in the cupboard, hand still firm on the blasted secret panel he was trying to open, Harry let out a snort of indignation/amusement. "This fu-antastic house seems to be somewhat carnivorous," he replied, correcting his word at the last minute as he was pretty sure there were impressionable five year olds in the room and he at least wanted to try to be a good example. "'M I late for the twins?" he wiggled a foot in hello. "Sorry about that, loves. I'll make it up to you once you get me out of here." Harry shifted from one foot to the other. "D'you think you could help with that? I think I dropped my wand." A sheepish pause. "Don't tell Hermione about this, would you?"

Remus cleared his throat quickly at Harry's impending word choice - but the younger man recovered fantastically, of course. Remus chuckled at his comment, casting a distasteful glance around the walls that did indeed seemed ready to clamp down the moment you had your back turned. "I'm just hoping Sirius threw out that rug in one of the spare rooms that tried to roll me up like a crepe, many moons ago." Remus hadn't spent a lot of time in Grimmauld Place - the Blacks wouldn't have a bloody werewolf under their roof, no sir, his youthful summers were spent almost exclusively with the Potters - but enough to almost be devoured by it, absolutely.
And before that happened to Harry, too, Remus figured he should probably help the man out of his current predicament. "Not a problem. I'm glad to find you in one piece." With a little hesitation, he released the hands of his children. They were small, and fast, and really if someone didn't have a hold on them at all times they could find all sorts of trouble near instantaneously. His first steps after releasing them were back toward the door, which he shut firmly so they would at least find that trouble in a place he could keep them in his line of sight. As Lily James went off to investigate an interesting cobweb in the corner, Remus caught up behind Teddy, who was busy tugging on Harry's wiggling foot. Remus did a quick sweep for Harry's wand, hoping the cabinet hadn't decided to have a little snack before its main meal of man. Remus chuckled at Harry's other request. "Your secret is safe with me. None of us would ever hear the end of that." He adored Hermione just as he was sure the rest of them did...but yes, things like this were best kept to themselves.
Remus stepped around the cupboard, examining it and running his hands along its surface, trying to figure out how exactly he was going to go about doing this. "You don't think it'll try to bite down or anything if I just, sort of, tug you out?" He questioned. It wasn't the most sophisticated of plans...but Remus was just the slightest bit concerned to see what this cupboard would do once he started casting magic at it.

Many moons? Was that a ...pun? Harry narrowed his eyes and gave a soft snort in the cupboard in both amusement and agreement. "I'm sure it was the first to go. To defend your honour and all that." He pondered briefly what a Remus crepe looked like and decided it would probably look scholarly, and be surprisingly sweet.
Unlikely culinary choices aside, Harry was getting rather tired of being half digested by a cupboard, and it seemed that Remus had the same thought. "Me too," he agreed, listening intently as Remus shut the door - to prevent the twins from escaping, perhaps? - and small hands started to tug on one foot. "Hi, little Lupin," he said cheerfully, waving his foot gently in a hello. "I'll be out to see you soon, just as soon as your dad rescues me." Which he was hoping for soon. "Oh, thank you," he directed at Remus, shoulders slumping in relief. That was one lecture on being careful he would avoid. Perhaps he should extend the request to Molly as well...
Remus' proposition was considered, and Harry nodded before realizing Remus couldn't see his head. "You could give it a go," he said, warily. "'S not like it's got anything else to grab me with." He paused. "Is it likely to grow teeth?" he asked, mostly amused. "I think Kreacher said he got rid of the really dangerous furniture..." There'd been a chaise longue in the attic that had sprouted arms and wouldn't let you go, for example. And a footstool that grew spikes. Really, was this a home or an emporium for medieval torture devices?

"Oh, surely," Remus chuckled at Harry's comment on the battle between rug and his honor. After a pause, he added somewhat melodramatically, "That or Walburga left it lying in wait for me somewhere." All joking aside, it was completely possible that rug was off hiding somewhere - probable, even. If the vile woman could make sure no one ever pried her precious portraiture from the wall, who knew what other horrors she had permanently installed in these halls before her (very) timely demise.
Remus smiled, taking a moment to appreciate the interaction between his tiny offspring and the boy's godfather. They were all supremely lucky to have Harry in their lives, but Remus really expected no less of the son of Lily and James. Perhaps it was just the dust or being back in this old house in general, but Remus had to step back into action before his eyes grew wet. He went for a smile again, at the obvious relief in Harry's voice that Hermione would never hear of this. "Of course. No promises on these little ones, though. They've already gotten me in trouble more times than I'd like to count." The twins certainly were chatterboxes, now that they could talk. No question where they got that from...
Harry, too, seemed a bit hesitant to be just unceremoniously tugged out of the cabinet. But what else could they do? Might as well give it a go first. "Hopefully, at least," Remus said, grinning when at the same time Harry said something about teeth. "I can't say for sure. I've not met many cabinets that could. But, well...we've seen many things in this house, haven't we?" Grimmauld Place was full of - mostly nasty, occasionally sentimental - surprises. "Let's hope so," Remus commented, as he took hold of Harry. Once he got a good grip and a steady stance, he tried a few test pulls - and his children, of course, hurried to help him, each grabbing a Potter leg. "Ready? Yell if you feel a pinch - or a tooth." With that, Remus gave a real tug.

Harry laughed softly, shaking his head within the cupboard. "Kreacher and I will keep an eye out for it," he decided firmly. "Can't have a Remus-eating carpet lying around. Bad for morale," he explained, which was an understatement - he'd pretty sure that the Order and many others would be devastated if Remus were, er, devoured by a rug.
Despite the fact that he was being slowly digested by a cupboard, Harry felt rather serene. After all, there were three Lupins in the room with him, and he was quite faithful that they'd get him out. At least, Remus would, but he was positive his godchildren would help. Smiling very fondly, Harry directed his question at the small Lupins, pleading, "You won't tell Aunt Hermione, will you? It'll be our secret," like the sweets he sometimes brought them or the fact that they'd all broken a lamp in one of the upstairs bedrooms... but that he didn't mention.
The lack of certainty about the presence (or not) of cupboard teeth was not confidence inspiring, but as Harry wasn't enamoured with the idea of being stuck in a cupboard for all his days, he decided to give it a go. Hopefully his headstone didn't read "here lies Potter, eaten by a cupboard"... He tried to relax his body and said cheerfully, "Give it a go, then. What's the worst that can happen?" Not a question to ask, but it was too late now! Remus gripped Harry firmly (and the other Lupins grabbed him too, to Harry's amusement), and then, with fair warning, tugged. Harry's middle protested as the door scraped by, but he was definitely moving. His shirt caught, pulling up to his armpits, but he was now wedged by his shoulders rather than his waist. Harry mumbled something uncomplimentary about the cupboard. "Well," he said, wiggling a bit, "No teeth." his sides felt a bit raw, but he'd had far worse. He'd died, in point of fact - anything else was kind of lame in comparison. "If you grab a door I can probably turn enough to escape..." he said doubtfully, peering back through the now slightly wider gap. He wiggled his fingers at the tiny Lupins, who were no doubt giggling.

"Just a bit," Remus concurred, sportive smile hanging in his voice when he spoke. "I'm much more useful when I'm not all gobbled up." Remus shot quick, wide-eyed glances at both of his children, successfully eliciting the giggles he sought. Remus had never really been 'the funny one', but that was the great thing about children - they laughed at almost everything. All one had to do was make a funny face or use a silly word. Remus could always count on his little Lupins, and their laughter put the spring in his heel that got him through the day.
They were so precious to him, he couldn't even get jealous over how much they loved Harry (and quite possibly thought Harry was far funnier than their dad, too). It only made Remus more joyful. And he couldn't blame them really - Harry was better than Dad for playing, because the younger of the two was far better at keeping up with the Twin Terrors than Old Man Lupin. Remus watched their interaction with a broad smile, eyeing Lily James curiously when she started to pipe up with something about 'candy', and shaking his head fondly when Teddy promptly popped his hand over her mouth and told Harry 'not to worry'. Remus wouldn't worry, either. Any secrets kept with Harry probably weren't too incredibly harmful.
There were a lot of bad things that could happen, really, but Remus decided Harry really didn't want an answer to that question, and opted to just tug instead. He heard no real protest, and seemed to be making some real progress (thanks in large part to the smaller Lupins, clearly) - until they got to Harry's shoulders. "That's most of the important bits out, at least," Remus commented, giving the younger man a break for a moment and letting go, waving his children off Harry's legs as well. Harry's very important head was still inside the cupboard, though, and as Remus resumed examining the piece of furniture for an out, Harry made his suggestion. Remus nodded, saying, "Let's try that, then." He took hold of the door to Harry's right, pulling it back to its full extent to give the man some more wiggle room - all to the chorus of plenty of childish giggles, of course.

"I certainly think so," Harry agreed, shifting slightly within the cupboard, smiling at the chorus of Lupin giggles -which were no less adorable for the muffling from the wooden structure. "There would be a sad lack of chocolate-toting individuals if you were gone, he paused and grinned, "And of course, your wonderful company." It might not necessarily be the wisest to poke fun at those who were going to assist you out of a cupboard, but Harry was confident in Lupin's integrity. He wouldn't just leave him there...
Though Harry couldn't see the twins, he knew they were participating, and he grinned again (a bit sheepishly) as Lily James started to reveal their great secret. What could Harry say? He was a sucker for little Lupins. Teddy, though, reassured him that the twins could keep quiet, and Harry chortled from the cupboard. "I know I can trust my best agents," he replied solemnly.
Now partly free, Harry snorted in amusement, flexing in his new position and testing its limits. "My legs always were my best feature," he agreed in a high falsetto voice, wiggling a leg for the Lupins' benefit. "But having possession of my head might also be nice." Remus obligingly grabbed a door, and Harry twisted to the side to make his profile narrower before falling backwards, snatching his wand as he did so. Grinning, hair mussed and ribs aching, he nevertheless held up a triumphant hand and crowed, "I'm free!" Now he could see the Lupins, he held out his arms for tiny Lupin hugs and looked up at Remus. "Thanks for rescuing me from the cupboard of doom," he smiled. "How can I ever repay my saviours?"

"Oh, we just couldn't have that," Remus said, mock horror apparent in his very voice (maybe a little of it real) at the thought of a world with even just a little less chocolate in it. A little less of Remus' company, yeah sure okay whatever, but chocolate??? Dear Merlin, no. "You hear that, kids?" Remus needed more giggles, pronto. He made another silly face as he and Thing One and Two pulled on Harry's legs, proclaiming with much drama, "No Daddy, no chocolate!" Many gasp-giggles were had at this outstanding display of theater on Remus' part - to be outshone, of course, by the irresistible-to-toddlers prospect of successfully sharing a secret with Harry. Remus just shook his head fondly at the man's remark to the twins, who were now indeed giggling with success at having kept secrets from Dad.
Remus didn't have time to figure out the secrets of these super secret spies, anyway, because he was joining in the giggle fit himself at Harry's showing off. He thought with a brief pang that this ancient house had probably seen more laughter in the past ten years than it had in the past ten decades put together - and then he smiled, because he'd been a real part of that. Even as the not-as-funny one. Remus was half-distracted by these thoughts as Harry finally came tumbling free, or he would have tried to catch the man. Instead, Harry ended up on the floor, and quickly in a dog pile of tiny Lupins, too. Remus stood watch over them and grinned at Harry. "This savior wouldn't mind a cup of tea," he remarked. "The smaller ones expect, I would presume...what was it now, candy?" He threw in a wink at Harry, keeper of secrets and sweets.

The world without both chocolate and Remus would be sorely lacking. Harry smiled fondly inside the cupboard, half-closing his eyes as he listened to the banter between Remus and his children. The sounds made him unfathomably happy - maybe it was that Remus seemed like the perfect dad, or maybe it was just that he knew the Lupins deserved to catch a break and it was nice to hear them giggle as tiny little hands tugged on his legs. Harry joined in the "no chocolate" cries, chuckling with amusement.
Freedom - and breathing air that wasn't eau de musty cupboard - was quite refreshing, even as he was smothered with tiny Lupins and their enthusiasm. Harry hugged them back with equal enthusiasm, careful of their small size, and beamed up at Remus happily. "Tea it is," he agreed, and wrapped a secure arm around each child. "I think we could dig into my secret stash," he stage-whispered to them, and then pushed himself up, groaning a bit as various joints creaked. Crossing over to give Remus a brief hug, Harry waved a hand at the door. "Onward, Lupins!" he proclaimed, heading down the stairs with a spring in his step.
The kitchen was warmer and far more inviting than (probably) all iterations of the Black family kitchen, with new trim on all the cupboards and a suspicious amount of red and yellow. Harry headed to the cupboard first (priorities) and selected some tea, then hunted for a plate for cookies. "So, what has your clan been up to?" he asked, elbow deep in a cupboard that he was fairly sure was safe. "Other than trouble," he added with a tickle in the direction of a tiny Lupin, and a grin.

Remus grinned, his tea needs promised to be satiated soon enough, and ushered his children out of the way so Harry could stand up properly. "Oh, come on. You're much too young to be doing all of that, now," he chided with a chuckle, as Harry groaned and popped on the way up. "If you're losing your joints already, I ought to be bedridden by now." It was probably more of a matter of being stuck uncomfortably in a cupboard for who knows how long, rather than age, but still. Remus didn't need any reason to feel any older than he already did; he had two small, identical reasons swarming about his legs right now. At Harry's battle cry back down the steps, Remus happily let the trio charge forth while he took up the leisurely rear.
Once in the kitchen - bless Harry, he'd worked so hard to make this place actually livable - Remus settled his old bones into a chair at the table. He closed the door behind him as he came in, so little Lupins could roam free and out of harm's way. Out of most of it, anyways; Remus was quickly learning not to trust the cabinets, cupboards, and dressers in this place, and he eyed Harry warily as the man scrounged around. He laughed along with the giggles of his tickled child - the other joining in to not feel left out - and contemplated. "I've been preparing for the upcoming term," he announced, not bothering to conceal the excitement in his voice. "I'm very excited to get back to teaching. Dora...well, I'm sure she's let you know all that she's up to." Tonks was an Auror, too, and Remus had no doubts she was a chatty one, considering how many of her friends worked in that department. "What have you been doing? How's dear Ginny?"

Harry stuck his tongue out at Remus, though his expression was mainly amused. "You sleep in a cupboard for eleven years," he teased, "See how your joints like it." He paused. "On the other hand, don't. Wizard cupboards seem to like to bite." Harry eyed the cupboard balefully and turned his back on it, galloping down the stairs with Lupins in tow.
Remus sat down, but the little ones were off, peering into every cupboard and pantry they could reach. Which was why Harry had a charm on the oven so it couldn't be open by small fingers. (Molly Weasley had been a great help in childproofing/prank proofing some of Grimmauld Place). He tickled one Lupin and then the other for good measure, and hummed thoughtfully as Remus started to update him. "I'm excited, though it's a bit late in my opinion," he teased. Goodness knows that he they would all have rather had Lupin teaching in their 5th year, at least. "The students are really lucky." he plated some cookies with ease and put the plate on the table, eyeing the smaller Lupins. "You can have two each," he told them sternly, "And then you must talk to your dad." He winked at Remus and nodded - Tonks was updating him rather often (not that he minded taking breaks from paperwork) - and smiled at Remus' returned question.
"More of the usual," he gestured to the house at large. "It's relatively quiet, which I suppose is a blessing. And Ginny's well," Harry's ears pinked as he busied himself with the kettle. "She keeps pulling a muscle in her shoulder and pretending it's nothing, so I try and spoil her once in a while. You want sugar in your tea?"

Remus grinned at Harry's comeback. A good point, and one that he was especially glad Harry felt like he could joke about now. Remus was living his own hell during those eleven years, but at least he hadn't had to sleep in any closets (or very many for very long, at any rate). He chuckled at Harry's addendum. "Another good point. Guess I'll just have to give old Vernon a call, then. Think he'd put me up?" He winked at Harry, shouldering the biting cabinet's door shut before following him down the stairs.
Once they were in the kitchen, all thoughts of cupboards were dismissed, to be replaced with catching up and plenty of cookies. Lily James, already knowing her father for the sucker that he was, brought him his allowance of two cookies with a sweet little smile - affording her and her brother one more each, as long as they thanked Uncle Harry extra hard before they left. Happy and occupied, the twins left the two adults to chat. Remus grinned at what Harry said, sharing his excitement. "I think you lot turned out pretty well without me, though you know I would have given anything to be there; alas." Many of his former students from around Harry's age were turning to the fields of magical law enforcement, some of them even joining the Order. Remus was a pretty humble man but he did like to think he laid the foundation for some of those ambitions. "I think I'm the lucky one; Minerva truly is a wonderful woman, giving me this opportunity. They're already giving her trouble over it." The Ministry, that was. Nothing too bad yet, but once parents got wind of who the new DADA professor was, he was sure there would be more. Minerva was an absolute saint for handling it all with such grace.
Harry's update sounded pretty happy, which made Remus smile. The boy deserved a happy, quiet life - as much as was possible, of course. He grinned t talk of Ginny, unable to help himself. Harry totally deserved that, too, to be loved. "Good for you. I'm sorry to hear she's hurt, though. Anything I could do to help? And yes, please." Remus, deny sugar in any form? Please.
