Their schedules didn't quite match up much anymore, mainly because when Mali wasn't at the hospital she was at the Ministry or working on the wolfsbane brewing with Eoin. It wasn't all potion making, either. They were experimenting, theorizing and plotting. They had to figure out the best way to reach people and to secretly distribute the potion without drawing suspicion. Mali'd begin to alter some of the records the Ministry was keeping in an effort to cover their tracks and the stress of it had her a little on edge, so she wasn't exactly pleasant company when you could get her away from those places. But tonight? That was for her and Theo. Because of scheduling conflicts, they were meeting late at night on the the same beach that Lupin had whisked them away too so long ago. The sandy stretch of land held a special spot in her heart. They weren't empty handed either. It might be crazy to eat ice cream on a windy beach in the middle of winter, but Theo was warm enough for both of them. One of her favorite places to be was curled up in his arms but having him in hers was nearly just as good. She'd already finished her own ice cream and was steadily working on guilting Theo out of at least part of his own. She was perched on her knees and leaning on him from behind, arms wrapped around his middle and her chin resting on his shoulder. It was really the perfect position, with a clear view of the ice cream and the ability to turn her head and whisper sweet nothings in his ear or plant light teasing kisses on his neck. "Theeeeeeo." Mali stage whispered as he scooped up another spoonful of ice cream. "You know what's better than eating ice cream?" She released her hold around his middle to butter him up by trailing her fingers up and down his sides. "Sharing ice cream with your girlfriend." It was going to be hard to resist her touch, even harder to resist her kisses. Mali planted one against the sensitive skin where his neck and collarbone met. "Just a bite?" And for the fatal blow, she moved her hand up to twist a few strands of his hair around her finger. "Or three." ____________________ Theo Ashland

Ice cream...in the middle of the night...outside on a windy beach. These were things Theo would do for only one person in the world, the one currently curled around him and keeping his heart warm enough to fight off the chilly bite of the weather and their snack of choice. He even had a big, goofy grin plastered all over his face, happy as he was to be in this exact spot. Months ago, Theo thought his heart was going to explode on this very beach after seeing Mali for the first time in weeks - tonight, the feeling wasn't all that different. He was full of love and happiness and, increasingly, ice cream.
Alas, he wasn't destined to get his fill. A little ice cream thief was determined to get his last few bites, having already worked through all of her own. "Maaaaali," he whispered back, teasing her. Theo bit down on his lip, trying very hard not to laugh as she worked her charm. All the same, he shivered under all her little touches and it had positively nothing to do with the cold. Mali still drove him absolutely mad in the best way possible, not even having to say anything - she knew exactly what she was doing. "Is that right?" He leaned into her, searching for maybe another one of those kisses in exchange for a bite of ice cream. Just a bite. Then her fingers were in his hair, and he was done. Her finishing move. She could have one, two, three bites or all of Theo's ice cream for the rest of his life as long as he kept him distracted like that.
"Oh, fine," he laughed, passing his spoon up to her along with his carton. "Little thief." He'd shifted so he could look at her, and there his gaze stayed, the best view in the world. Things had gotten crazy again lately, hadn't they? These little moments were all the more nourishing then, Mali filling his whole vision and nothing else but just them. They made him nostalgic, made him think back on the best parts of the last several months that made the worst parts all worth it. "I can't believe how long it's been since the last time we were here. That all feels so long ago to me now."

Theo shivered under her fingers and Mali shivered at the feeling of his breath against her ear when he whispered right back at her. She didn't miss a single thing about Theo, not even the way that he leaned in trying to coax another kiss. Mali was happy to oblige of course, murmuring "Mmhm. Did I tell you how handsome you are when you're sharing ice cream?" into his neck before pressing her lips just above the first kiss while sneaking in a light and playful nip since bites were the theme of the evening. "So, so handsome." When he would finally cave and relinquish the ice cream it would have definitely been an earned prize, she was laying it on thick. Mali knew just how to work Theo and it worked, he passed up the carton up to an excited squeal from her.
Mali snatched the cup away, sitting back on her heels and leaving Theo out in the wind. "Mm, I know what you mean." she told him with a nod, scooping up a spoonful of ice cream, "A lot's happened, hasn't it?" So much, some really good things and some really bad things and even a few she didn't like to think about. Mali paused with the spoon in her mouth while a twinge of anxiety snaked up her spine. Thinking about what happened made her uncomfortable and Mali did what Mali does and sought out the safety and security of Theo. She moved from behind him and into his lap. "It's a little unfair, isn't it?" Once the floodgate was open there was no stopping it. Everything came rushing at once and it was overwhelming. As a Hufflepuff she found the concept of fairness to be very important and was having trouble reconciling their hand in life with her world view of karma and justness. "We can't seem to catch a break."
Mali scooped another spoonful of ice cream and offered it up to Theo. Heavy conversations required a little bit of sugar to sweeten and lighten it up, to keep the weight of it from crushing you. The next spoonful was hers, though. She had worked very hard to part him with his ice cream, after all. "I'm lucky to have you, or I'd literally been dead." There was an invisible pressure around her neck, tightening her throat right up. She resisted the urge to rub away non existent fingers by tightening her grip on the carton and spoon. Mali knew there was nothing there, that it was all in her head. Just an anxiety response, but she could feel it so vividly. It was hard to breathe, but Theo was there. Everything was okay. She leaned into him, seeking comfort. "No one even noticed. How could no one notice?" The incident at the apothecary was on her mind and refused to be ignored. Deep down she understood that people were too absorbed in keeping themselves alive to notice another struggle in a sea of struggles, but damn it she'd almost died feet from a slew of people until Theo came to her rescue, and got attacked for it. "Do you think that was their plan all along? To lure someone else to attack?"

Theo was playing right into Mali's hands - not to mention her sweet little kisses - only to literally be left out in the wind when he gave her what she wanted. Hmph. "I'm beginning to think you only want me for my sweets," he laughed, leaning back to look at her, scooting through the sand to close that gap between them again.
"Understatement of the year," he agreed. 'A lot' didn't even begin to cover all that had happened to them. There was a time when Theo thought his house arrest, and the actions he committed to warrant it, were the worst thing to ever happen to him. Now, he wasn't so sure. Mali and Theo had been beaten down and broken and beaten again. He didn't like to think about those things, and the look on Mali's face told him she didn't like to, either. "You okay?" It had become such a loaded question for them. He happily welcomed her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her waist so as not to impede any ice cream eating.
Ice cream seemed to be falling to the wayside, though, because Mali didn't seem okay. He was becoming more and more familiar with her little nuances and edges. He knew how her brain worked, most of the time. She got overwhelmed just like he did, though she was far better at handling it - most of the time. Theo cuddled into her as she started up again, wanting her to talk about it because they needed to talk about it, but wanting her to feel safe at the same time.
"I'm just glad I've got you," Theo said before being fed a spoonful of ice cream. Having Mali by his side through all this was better than a hundred breaks. He wouldn't have been able to do any of it at all alone. Mali expressed much the same sentiment at almost the same time, even going so far as to say out loud what they both knew to be true. He'd helped her when she needed him, sure, but if Mali hadn't been so brave that day in the hospital Theo was almost positive he would have either been killed on the spot or otherwise a rotting shell in Azkaban right now. He held Mali tighter to him when she leaned in, kissing the top of her head.
He needed it as much as she did, the closeness, the reassurance. That day, the same day she was thinking of, was still fresh on his mind too. He thought he was going to watch Mali die that day. For a brief moment, he thought he might be responsible for it. "I wouldn't put it past the bastards," he grumbled at her possibility. "They understand too well how people work, I think. That's the scariest part to me. I feel like that woman can read my fucking mind." This conversation was quickly leading Theo to discover he wasn't exactly doing okay, either. "How are we supposed to fight that?" He had no doubts he would see those people again. He didn't know why he, of all people, had been picked in the first place - but all the same, they seemed mighty big fans of his.

The witch considered the wizards words as he scooted back and she dug in to his hard won ice cream. "Mmm..." Mali paused, tilting her head while peering down her nose into the dessert, thinking. "Your sweets and your cute bum." she said, sneaking a sideways glance at Theo while wearing a devilish grin on her face. The ice cream was sweet, but Theo was always sweeter. Mali pushed a sprinkle around one of the scoops with the tip of her spoon before deciding "I think I fancy your bum the most." After another scoop of ice cream she quickly added "The ice cream gives it some solid competition, though." It's sugary goodness only just lost to the more attractive parts of her handsome troll's anatomy.
Really, though... The way Theo was so in tune with her and how she worked was the real winning quality. It was exactly what Mali needed, too. She was a little witch full of insecurity and worries who thrived when she had someone who could coax her down off of the ledge and help her work through it. Sometimes all she needed was the physical closeness and the sense of security that Theo provided. He was so patient and kind to her. Everything she did for Theo, he returned ten fold. He held her together when she would unravel and pull apart at the seams on her own. Mali could work through her overwhelmed feelings because she didn't have to do it alone, because he was there every single step of the way. She was mad for him, as evidenced by the only slightly reluctant way she shared his own ice cream with him.
"You'll have me as long as there's ice cream, at least." They couldn't get too mushy, because that would undoubtedly lead to vulnerability. Did they really need that right now? Mali felt like what they really needed was a beautiful night on the beach and bellies full of ice cream. Too much had happened, though. There were too many emotions and fears to be ignored, especially when she had started to lead them down that path. It ws too late to turn back now, they had to process what happened. At least they would process it together, with ice cream and warm embraces. After another bite or three, Mali passed up the last spoonful of ice cream to the troll who stole her heart. "You're my favorite person to share it with." That was definitely something.
After setting the empty carton down in the sand, Mali relaxed back against Theo while she traced meandering and zig zagging lines along the arms wrapped around her waist. "Do you think she can? Read minds, I mean." What was it called? Leg--something. There was some sort of magic that allowed people to see into other people's minds and mess with them. They'd even used it back at the farmhouse to manipulate what they saw. It was an advanced bit of skill so naturally Mali didn't pay much attention to what it was, considering it was firmly past her own capabilities. "You fought brilliantly against it the first time. I dunno that you'd remember it like that, but you kept breaking through the Curse." This took them back way beyond the apothecary all the way to where it all began, in the spell damage unit of the hospital.
She turned sideways so she could hold Theo too, her arms encircling his waist and her head resting against his shoulder. It couldn't be anymore comfortable for him to remember these things than it was for her, so she wanted him to feel secure too. Theo needed to know that she wouldn't let anything happen to him if she could help it, just like he wouldn't to her. "Little bits of you kept coming back, I think that's why you didn't really hurt me and that one witch, the one that did the curse, that's why she left. She could tell she couldn't hold you anymore. That takes a strong mind, doesn't it? Everything I've read about it says that. If you can fight against that, you can fight against anything." After a quiet moment, Mali hesitantly added "I don't really wanna fight anymore. I'm tired. I just want to be left alone." She chewed on her lip, feeling restless and unsettled. The witch shifted in his lap, turning back so she could lean against him again.
Mali leaned to the side and reached into the sand, drawing a heart with an arrow through it with her index finger. "It feels so senseless. That makes it scarier, there's no real reason behind it. You could say it's because we got one of them arrested, but why did she even pick you in the first place? Why my floor? There were so many floors and so many people. I loved both of those patients. I cared for Mister Longbottom almost my whole career." As short as that career was. All that had happened made her feel aged beyond her years instead of a young, fresh faced twenty something. "We're good people, aren't we? We lied, but we're making up for it. We don't deserve any of this."

"Well, obviously," Theo had a wink waiting for Mali's sneaky glance and grin. A grin so mischievous he knew more had to be coming, so he sat and watched her eat her ice cream with an amused expression on his face. He turned that expression to something haughty and uppity - he could only hold it for a few seconds, looks of royalty didn't hold well on such heavy and angular faces - at the very idea that ice cream had any competition against him. "Watch your tongue. He gets jealous." Sitting down and sitting down in sand made it a bit more difficult, but Theo managed a few wiggles of his bum, just for her, laughing all the way. If that and ice cream was all she needed to stick around, Theo was in luck. "I think I can swing that."
Alas, they'd worked through their ice cream rations for this evening. Theo got the last bite - bless her - and he deposited the spoon in the empty carton with haste so they could get to proper cuddling. They had some decompressing to do and the closeness made it that much easier. This was inevitable, it had to happen. Not talking about things led them both down very dark paths. So when the uncomfortable emotions and unpleasant memories poked their heads up - even in the middle of a wonderful ice cream date - they might as well face them head on. "Maybe. I've always thought that's kind of dirty magic. Something a Death Eater would learn, you know? Why would a normal person need to read anyone's mind?"
Theo fell quiet as Mali brought up The Day. They were already as close as possible, but when she went to wrap herself around him, he found a way to lean further into her. That day was something he tried not to think about unless she was around at all. She was right - he didn't remember it like that at all. Nothing Theo did that day felt like a fight. "I just felt really confused the whole time...sometimes I wonder if I made it worse somehow." He hadn't admitted that before now. If Theo had just let go the same people would still be dead, probably, but would he and Mali be having all these problems now? Mali ended with an admission of her own and turned back around, Theo still clinging to her. He rested his chin on her shoulder. "It's not our fight. But they keep giving it to us."
Theo watched Mali's finger move idly through the sand. He reached down and added a 'TA' and a 'MJ' to either side of her heart. He shook his head against her shoulder. "It is senseless. It's just because she was there, and then I was there. They thrive off of chaos." Were they good people, though, the two of them? After living and dealing with that chaos the way they did? Was there any right, good way to deal with chaos? "We're good people. Decent. We have to be. We're not bloody Death Eaters. We were just scared. Right?"

A wink. Goodness. Ice cream and cheesiness didn't usually go together but Theo made it work, made it seem adorable. When he wiggled in the sand she laughed out loud, not even bothering to try and muffle it with a hand. "He!?" she asked, amused by the fact that Theo's Cute Bum was apparently an entirely separate entity from himself. She leaned back to watch the butt wiggling in the sand, laughing out loud. "Does the bloke have a name?" Mali asked, grinning in amusement that apparently Theo's Very Cute Bum was an entirely separate entity from himself, capable of things like jealousy. "He's got no reason to be jealous." Mali told him, giving said bum a pat before she returned to the almost winning ice cream. "He's still my favorite. Only just, though."
"I dunno." Mali shrugged as they treaded into dangerous, emotional territory. "I think it could be good defensively." Reading minds, that was. "If you can read someone's mind you could figure out if they're an enemy or not, couldn't you?" If someone could've read the woman's mind while she was lurking through the hospital corridors, maybe they could have gleaned her plans and put a stop to it before it began or at least gotten themselves prepared. Instead, it was a complete and totally blindside. "Besides, reading your mind could prove very interesting... Although, I don't really speak Troll." Humor and gentle teasing was a big part of their relationship, they couldn't veer completely off the edge without inserting a little bit of it to bring themselves back.
It was a wonder, how people with such different body dimensions could fit perfectly in each other's arms. Theo was much bigger than she was, tall and broad, but he seemed like he belonged there when she wrapped him up in her own embrace. Theo leaned into her and she leaned into him and together they carefully picked through things that would never fully be processed. Mali didn't think it was something that they would ever get over or totally move past. It would always lurk in their shadow and cling to their souls like some terrible cancer that couldn't be removed. Her heart broke a little when Theo spoke. Her arm tightened around him, holding him as close as humanly possible. There was a prickle of tears in her eyes but Mali managed to blink them away before they could form. It was all unfair, Theo shouldn't have to carry a wonder like that with him. "You didn't make it worse. I think you would've killed me if you didn't fight it. She wanted you to do it, and I'm really no match. There's no telling where she would've stopped if you wouldn't of fought."
When she felt the weight of him on her shoulder, Mali turned to press a long kiss against his cheek before resting her head against his. "I dunno how people like Remus and his friends manage to do what they do. Fight them all the time? It's exhausting and terrifying. They fight dirty, like you said. I'm afraid they'll bring the fight to my dads or to Eoin or something. Eoin's too precious to get wrapped up in something like this." Wasn't she, though? Mali was the epitome of good once upon a time. She didn't lie, she didn't deceive people or break laws but the darkness that poisoned the wizarding world was twisting her into a different version of herself. Theo, too. As much as she had to feel guilty for, Mali never killed anyone. She never cast a spell that took someone's life but the same couldn't be said for Theo. Gentle Giant with a Jealous Bum that he was, that would probably haunt him forever.
Mali added a '+ His Bum' under the 'TA' Chaos didn't make it feel any better, though. If they could find a reason then maybe she could assign meaning to it but if it was random chaos? "It doesn't mean anything..." she said out loud, trailing off in thought. "We were just scared." Mali agreed, nodding her head. "I didn't want to lose you to Azkaban. I'd do it again, too. All of it, I'd do every bit of it again even if I knew how it would turn out. You needed me then, and I've needed you since then." Like now, if Theo wasn't here she would've fallen to pieces ages ago and he was the only thing keeping her together right this moment.

"Mhm, he. His name is...ah, I've gone and forgotten it again." Theo grinned, eyes shining as he watched Mali laugh. He loved to make her laugh; and not just because it earned him things like little pats on the bum. "Good," he laughed with her. If he (or parts of him, at least) could win out over ice cream, he figured he was doing pretty good.
How he just wanted to make her laugh all the time. He was good at that (not to brag). Mali seemed content with his cuddling abilities, too, and he supposed his ability to comfort her...but he never felt like quite enough. When she was upset - or teetering on the edge of it with something serious on her mind, like now - he didn't feel quite so solid as usual. He undoubtedly wanted to be there for her, but he wasn't sure where his mind would end up in these situations, either. He never was. Theo was not wired for stability.
Isn't that how they worked, though? What made them so perfect? They played off each other's bits and pieces, and filled in the rest the best they could. The bits and pieces they both lacked, they filled with a sweetness and a gentleness. "Right, it's mostly grunts and requests for snacks up there, nothing that interesting," Theo smiled and tapped his noggin before shifting in the sand. "I can see how it would be helpful, I guess. It just seems like, an invasion of privacy, or something. Though I guess that doesn't really matter with your enemies." Theo didn't really like the thought of anyone in his brain besides himself.
That thought brought back all sorts of unpleasant memories for Theo. What it felt like having someone else in your brain...Mali was holding him tight and close, or else he would have shuddered. She reassured him that he hadn't made things any worse than they already were that day - but really, Theo was never going to forgive himself for that day, worse as he made it or not. "I'm glad I didn't kill you." Not that it needed to be said. "I think you helped me fight. Like you were there in my head, too, somehow. Does that make sense? Like I knew how important you were, even then."
That was a lot, and they shuffled around in the sand in silence for a moment. Mali pressed her lips against his cheek and Theo closed his eyes for a moment. "Extremely exhausting," he agreed with a small nod. Mali was scared the Death Eaters would go after the people she loved. That squeezed at Theo's heart, because he couldn't really tell her otherwise without lying straight to her face. He knew it, and she knew it, too. That's exactly the kind of thing a Death Eater would do. "Eoin's strong, too. So's your dads - have to be, after raising you." He poked her in the side before going on with his point. "Mister Lupin, and all of them, they've got families, too. They seem happy despite. I guess we just get used to it and look out for our own." That sounded absolutely exhausting, a lot harder than just keeping their heads down...but Theo supposed he didn't really have that option anymore.
After all this time, Theo never really considered that Mali was just as insecure about what happened as he was. He knew she was torn up about it, about losing her patients and everything that happened after, but the sheer vulnerability in her voice was striking. He never considered it at the time because, as she said, at that time he needed her. Mali was his rock then, in the days after, just like she was now. "I love you," he returned a long kiss against her cheek. "I don't think I show it enough - but you know I would do anything for you."
