The endeavor started out innocently enough, she just wanted to get a butterbeer and ask Meg to talk with her later that night. She had an idea that would help both of them achieve their goals. She could give Meg the wolfsbane, and Meg could give it to the wolves. That way, the wolves retained their anonymity and Mali still got to make their lives just a little bit easier. It was such an obvious idea that she was surprised she hadn't thought of it sooner, a sort've 'duh' moment but Meg, like all Ashlands, was stubborn and had the excuse of 'being busy' considering she was at work. Well, Mali was stubborn in her own way and refused to move from her bar stool until the blonde would talk to her. The witch started out with orders of butterbeer, but eventually she grew bored of the taste and switched to something a little...stronger. It would take the edge off of her irritation, too. Draco had 'taught' her how to drink, and she chose wines and sweet fruity things that hardly carried the strong taste of alcohol. Lemon drops sounded like candy, and Draco had first introduced her to cosmopolitans. Peach schnapps sounded like it could even be healthy, given the fruit in it's name. The more she drank, the less she cared. The werewolves didn't seem to matter that much, or Meg's dislike. Mali was the life of the party, giggling and chatting up anyone who sat near her. Mostly inane babble about how delicious lemon flavored vodka was if you drank it fast enough, how cute the quidditch players in the Witch Weekly were, but occasionally she'd veer off on heavy topics. How bad Death Eater's smelled, how awful the Minister was and how people should stop listening to the horrid witch. How the woman was ruining wizarding society, next thing you know they'll be regulating what sort've spells someone could cast, make people start taking marks to prove their worthiness or display their unworthiness. Luckily, those conversations only lasted 'til she got another drink. Eventually the pub emptied out, people who were just as drunk as she was toddled home but Mali hung around. She wasn't quite as bubbly, though, feeling and looking rather nauseated by the whole experience. Meg walked by cleaning a glass and Mali snagged her by the elbow to get her attention. "Look, we really need to talk so we've got two options. You can set aside your ridiculous, unfair grudge against me for five minutes so you can listen to what i've got to say when the bar actually closes, or you can keep being a stubborn jerk--oh... a stubborn person, but in that case----" Mali hiccuped, and laughed at it, shaking her head which was a terrible idea. "Whoa! The room spins when I do that." Maybe the alcohol would make it stop spinning, and she reached for her glass and threw back the rest of it to see. "Holy shit. Wait.. I don't use that word." She hiccuped again, and it didn't matter what words she used because she found the hiccups the funniest thing in the world. _______________________________________ Meg Ashland

The girl could sit there all night for all Meg cared. She'd honed the bartender's skill of tactfully ignoring annoying patrons to a fine art, if she did say so herself. Not that Mali was exactly annoying in the typical, drunken sense. Honestly, if Meg didn't hate her so much...the girl actually seemed kind of fun, laughing and talking with everyone, just like Meg herself was wont to do when she was on that side of the bar (and this side too, usually, when she wasn't being so grumpy). But no. To Meg, it was all just an illusion. A trick. Mali wanted Meg to think she was a nice, good person - and her act was impressive - but Meg refused to be stupid enough to fall for it. Some would say she stubbornly refused.
Sit there all night, Mali did. Meg seriously began to doubt the ability of such a little thing to keep throwing them back like Mali did - but later into the evening, Mali started running her mouth about things she shouldn't have been, so Meg had to keep her drinking. She mostly shut up when she had a drink in her hand. Meg had become very particular about what kind of talk she allowed in her bar now; there was enough suspicion shining on them as it was.
Even that didn't deter Mali. Meg was sure the girl was here to talk to her about those things she wouldn't shut up about, and Meg was dragging out that inevitable moment as long as possible. She'd already talked to Mali, when the girl came to her house. To Meg, that was all that needed to be said. But of course, it just wouldn't make sense if Theo had a girlfriend that wasn't just as stubborn as he was.
Meg's bar slowly emptied, leaving just Mali sitting on a stool. Meg still ignored her. She went about her closing chores, happy as a clam to still be ignoring her - that is, until the girl grabbed at her. Meg almost dropped the glass she was cleaning in shock, but she recovered, and whipped around on Mali ready to give the girl an earful and send her on her merry way. Mali beat her to the punch. She said a whole lot of words, some of them sending an angry pink tinge crawling up Meg's neck and cheeks. Some of them made her feel the tiniest bit guilty. And some of them...well, a good number of them there toward the end just made her pity the poor girl. This was definitely Meg's fault. She shook off Mali's grip and went behind the bar to pour a glass of water.
"Drink," she instructed, setting the glass down in front of Mali with a little more force than necessary. "Then I'll listen to what you have to say. If you think you can refrain from calling me any more names." Meg crossed her arms and waited, lifting an eyebrow at the girl. "What's so urgent you've got to drink my whole bar so I'll talk to you about it?"

Her brain was soaking in alcohol and while intoxicated Mali felt like a very different person. Her edges were sharper, her tongue had lost it's gentle way with words. Normally Meg wheeling around on her would have caused her to demure and maybe stutter but tonight she didn't flinch. The blonde looked angry at her words, and Sober Mali would've found that uncomfortable and worked to soothe out the irritated edges but she didn't care. Meg treated her like crap and the alcohol helped her realize that she didn't have to take it. It stoked the fire of her temper 'til her blood was burning hot in her veins.
When Meg sat the glass of water down, Mali knocked it away with one deliberate swipe of her arm. "No! You don't get to treat me like this and then try to boss me around! I don't want water." The glass spilled and the sober personality drowning in alcohol had the decency to at least feel bad about it. Mali grabbed a cocktail napkin left behind by someone who'd been sitting two barstools down and went to sop up the spilled water. "And you can act like your feelings are hurt all you want." The hiccups weren't funny anymore, just frustrating and Mali made a low grumble of discontent when one passed her lips. "But you can't in good confidence tell me that you've not been behaving like a jerk. If the bloody shoe fits, you wear it." Her cocktail napkin quickly became saturated and Mali stood up, wobbling off to find another a few bar stools further down.
She was very determinedly not looking at Meg when she spoke. Something in her had snapped with the glass of water and she wasn't quite sure when she was going to stop. "I don't even get it. I didn't do anything to you. You know what happened to Theo wasn't my fault." Her gaze snapped up suddenly, looking Meg square in the eye. "It happened to me too, you know. All of it. Everything that Theo's gone through, he hasn't gone through it alone." Perhaps the sudden movement wasn't a good idea, Mali looked a bit queasy and flopped down onto the nearest bar stool, cradling her head in her arms. "Drinking was a terrible idea. I'm going to throw up, where's the rubbish bin?"

If there was any way to get Meg to take Mali seriously right now, knocking over a glass of water was definitely not it. Meg sighed and held her hand out on the lip of the bar, catching the glass before it could roll to the floor and make yet another mess Meg would have to clean up. She turned around to refill it, talking to Mali with her back to her. "I don't care if you want it. You need it." When she returned to the bar, Mali was cleaning up the spilled water - well, sort of cleaning it up as well as she could with a wet napkin...but still. She was making the effort. Effort Meg did not want to accept. Meg's frown deepened and she set the refilled glass on the bar, far away from Mali's wingspan.
"Yeah, I'm a jerk." Meg shrugged. "Only to people that deserve it." She spoke with far less conviction in her voice now, though her gaze was still sharp. The only thing more annoying than a person being a git, was being wrong about thinking they were a git. Mali wasn't really that bad, Meg could see that. From what she was seeing right now, and if what the girl said about what happened at the hospital was true, her natural inclination was to be a helper. Bloody helpers. They were very hard people to hate.
Meg watched Mali carefully as she teetered off for more napkins. She was drunk, no doubt about it. Meg was now almost more worried for the girl than she was angry at her...almost. Meg was more stubborn than either of her brothers and Mali knew exactly how to get under her skin. "Haven't done anything to me?" Meg let out an exasperated sigh. "How can you see it's not about me? I really am very sorry you've gone through a hard time. I am. But you're right - you haven't done anything to me. You haven't done one thing that makes me want to like you besides demanding I do it." Meg wondered if Mali even heard her. The girl did not look very good at all, flopping down and hiding her head. "Fuck." Meg scooped up the bucket - yes, they had a bucket - before coming around to the other side of the bar.
"If you're going to barf, do it here," Meg set the bucket down on the floor between the girl's legs. And only because Meg was a very good bartender and not at all because her desire to hate Mali was very rapidly cracking (she would tell herself that, until the day she died, bet on it), she reached out and rubbed the girl's back, pulling her hair away from her face just in case. "You're not much of a drinker, are you? What do you and Theo even do together?"

Intoxication seemed to intensify things for Mali. When she was happy she was really happy and when she was irritated it pushed her to the point of petulance. "Alright, mum." she retorted with an eyeroll as she busily saturated the napkin in an attempt to clean up her mess. The witch moved a hand to her wand pocket with the intention of magicking away the mess but found that the instrument was missing. A misplaced wand would normally be cause for concern, but the alcohol muffled the alarm bells going off in her brain. She simply shrugged her shoulders and continued on with her ineffective napkin, figuring she'd find it later. It was for the better, anyway. Mali would charm her nose off in this condition, try explaining that to Theo.
"At least we agree on something." she quipped with a bob of her head and a snicker, amused by her own commentary. Not so amusing was the implication that she deserved it. "Whatever you have to tell yourself." If Meg wanted to treat her like that, then fine. That wasn't a reflection on her. Meg was the one who had to live with how she treated people. If one thing could be said about Mali it was that she always tried to treat people with kindness and compassion. Some more than others, but she had very few people that didn't like her.. So when one did dislike her, it was very very annoying. What had she done? None of this made any sense.
"I'm not sorry." the tipsy witch said quietly, chancing a single glance up from the mess that she was making almost no progress on. "The hard time was uncomfortable, but Theo was worth it." It was an honest and open admission, something that Meg didn't really deserve but that's how she operated. Mali wore her heart on her sleeve for everyone to see. Her thoughts and feelings were all written down plainly for anyone to read. "I wouldn't care if you liked me or not." That wasn't true, it nagged at her relentlessly. "I didn't come here to be your best friend, I want to help." It was vague, but in her drunken state it was better to err on the side of caution. "Besides, you're wrong." Mali said as the corner of her lips tugged upward in the smallest of grins. "I did do something to you. I hit you in the face with a ball of snow."
It didn't matter how much she wanted to help, drinking was such an awful idea. Mali's tolerance was low to begin with and she had thrown drink after drink back like a champ. Too much, she had far too much and it was threatening to all come back up. The hand on her back was soothing and Meg's words seemed to have lost their venom. What did they do? Mali had a few moments to ponder the answer as she vomited into the conveniently placed bucket. The taste of bile and liquor mixed together wasn't a very pleasant one but thankfully there was water nearby. Although she would've liked nothing more than to never drink that water, she downed the glass to wash away the sour taste in her mouth. Mali set down the glass, shrugging her shoulders. "He reaches the tall bits for me and I tell him what he's missing way down here. And sometimes, there's snuggling." All the time. There was snuggling all the time because she couldn't get enough of Theo. His scent, the scruffiness of his facial hair under her fingers, the taste of his lips... All of it was much better to get drunk off of.

They were both being childish, squabbling back and forth like this, but at least Mali had the excuse of being drunk. Her wobbling and snickering made this plain as day for Meg to see, and it made her all the more uncomfortable. Like she needed to take, like, responsibility for her feelings, or something - gross. Meg just wanted to bitch at Mali until she went away. She didn't want to face her because then she would have to face herself, and increasingly, Meg didn't like what she saw there. She didn't like the way she was treating Mali. And if even the drunk, wobbly Mali could stand there and be open with her - Meg would be damned if she let that get the upper hand of maturity on her.
So she stayed mostly silent through the squabbling and only showed signs of life when Mali suddenly got quiet and serious, issuing a noncommittal hum of acknowledgement. At least she wasn't taking the piss out of Meg anymore - though Meg didn't really know what to do with this stark change of pace, either. She did like the honesty. Hearing that Mali didn't, in fact, want to be her best friend was quite a refreshing change of pace - because all this felt like was Mali trying to get on her good side so she could get something out of Meg. Just like everyone else lately.
But Mali just wanted to help - Meg's friends, Meg assumed. That was the constant here. Meg was afraid of help, but if it was just help...it was a nice offer. Meg scrunched her eyebrows together when Mali suddenly smiled at her - bringing up the snowball incident. Meg had to roll her eyes hard and bite the inside of her cheek to stop from grinning back. "Yes, of course, nothing I love more," she muttered as she scooped up the bucket and went to the other side of the bar.
Meg was basically broken down at this point. She may have had an attitude, and a penchant for grudges, but Meg was a Hufflepuff, too - she was a helper at heart. Mali was retching into the bucket and it was pitiful; who could be mad at the little creature? She was human, too. She made mistakes. Meg was certainly no perfect angel, so why she was holding Mali against such a high standard of forgiveness...she couldn't really tell you. Didn't mean she wanted to hear about all the snuggling the girl did with her brother, though. "Stop, you're going to make me vomit." Meg was smiling a little bit now, rubbing Mali's back. She pulled out her wand and cleared out the bucket with a spell. "Now that you've got all that bullshit out...you can tell me why you came here, I guess. Do you want more water? Something to eat?" Listening to Mali would be a whole lot easier if she got to still play bartender while she did it.

"Dunno why it bothered you." Mali shrugged as Meg came 'round the bar with a bucket. "I thought ice queens liked snow." Thinking back to that, Mali found the whole thing funny now. She laughed at the image, slapping a hand over her mouth to try and unsuccessfully smother out the sound. "In their face. It was a beautiful throw, really. Your face just got in the way." It never occurred to her that it might be counter productive, laughing at Meg while she was trying to get her on her side enough to agree to help her. "Theo thought it was funny, too. I think you knew that." The troll made no attempt to hide his laughter that day, much to her horror at the time. "I'd been aiming for him. How can someone miss a target that big? I think it was fate, maybe the snowball was drawn to your icy nature." She laughed again, how could she not? Alcohol made everything funnier and everything seemed like a great idea.
Except vomiting. Vomiting wasn't funny or a great idea. The queasy feeling was uncomfortable and she didn't really enjoy the taste of her drinks the first time so back up and mixed with the bitter taste of bile was absolutely wretched. Meg didn't really appreciate Mali's natural sweetness that came out especially when Theo was involved, even threatened to vomit. "Would you rather hear that he's really good in bed?" Loose inhibitions meant a loose, slightly crass tongue, after all. Throwing up would serve Meg right. "We do a lot of that too." Mali nudged the bucket towards Meg. "Buckets free if you need to vomit now." Or maybe not. Another wave of nausea hit her and Mali laid a hand over her stomach but managed to keep it all under control.
They were switching gears a bit, was Meg actually willing to listen to her? She asked why Mali'd come and talking to Meg was exactly that reason. "Maybe more water.." to settle her stomach which was now a knot of nerves as much as it was sick with too much alcohol. This was a chance that she apparently hadn't blown by talking about hitting Meg with snow and she needed it so desperately. Saying the wrong thing now could be devastating. This could be a small bonding moment for them or the thing that shuts Meg off from her forever. "Your werewolves." the bar was empty now so it was alright to say it out in the open. "I want to help them and you want to keep their identities safe. We can do both. You tell me how much wolfsbane you need and I can give it to you and we both achieve our objective. Don't give me any rubbish about not knowing if the wolfsbane is safe or effective, you can talk to people who've taken ours" Or person. "and they can tell you it's effective, maybe better than they've had before because we're trying to improve it. We've made a little progress on the potion itself, but we've got a whole routine to try and make the transformation easier the night of and morning after. You'd be a middle man. It's perfect." The conversation was a bit sobering on her end, allowing her to focus more but there was still alcohol in her system evidenced by her lack of tact, filter or modesty. "Of course it is. I'm brilliant."

Merlin's beard. Meg had hexed people for much less than what Mali was saying to her right now - but strangely enough, she didn't feel much of that urge at all. Maybe a little, no one loved being teased, but Mali was having such a good time of it it was hard not to grin just at how silly she was being. And honest, honestly. Meg had acted very, very cold toward her. And now she was thawing...but Mali didn't have to know that yet. "Yep, ice queen supreme. Don't forget it." Meg was never one to go blubbering at someone's feet for forgiveness. Mali could earn it. "It's hard to miss that baboon's laughter, true." Theo, too. He'd been less than helpful in making his girlfriend likable to his family.
Mali started to vomit, then, so Meg left her to it in silence. Talking and throwing up didn't really mix - not that that was going to stop Mali. Once she was empty (supposedly, Meg kept the bucket close at hand just in case) she started on her little mission to make Meg join the head-in-a-bucket party. She didn't want to hear about Theo and Mali cuddling and she most certainly didn't want to hear about anything else. "Merlin's beard, woman, stop! Say another word about that and I'm kicking you out on the street." Meg had a feeling she'd probably end up having to take Mali home tonight, given her state, but Merlin...let it be in silence. She nudged the bucket back Mali's way when the girl did the same to her because the look on her face wasn't promising, but she looked stable enough, for now. Meg returned to her more comfortable side of the bar and fetched another glass of water.
Meg didn't look at Mali while she spoke. First she busied herself with getting a clean glass, and then filling it with water from the tap, and when she brought it back to Mali she started rubbing at scuffs in the bar surface and watching them fade under her fingers. She did nod along, though, and she just had to look up as Mali ended her little speech in the most ridiculous way possible. There was no hiding it now - Meg grinned widely at her as she met her eyes. "You're ridiculous, is what you are. I've never seen someone so bloody insistent on helping where it's not wanted. Bloody Hufflepuffs, I tell you." Meg's grinned twitched, and she looked back down at the scuffed bar surface for a moment, swirling her finger through a particularly deep divot. Her voice started to come out softer, almost like she was talking to herself. "They do need the potion, though. It's so bloody expensive at the apothecary, and they're always supposedly 'out' after those regulations were put in place...," she looked back up at Mali. "Are you charging? We don't make all that much money here."

Ice Queen Supreme. "That rhymed!" Mali squealed with delight, clapping her hands. "Bravo! You should be a poet!" Ice Queen Supreme, saying that in her head was so much fun that she giggled like a school girl. The witch was easy to entertain as a rule but she was much more simple minded when her brain was floating in a healthy pool of various fruity flavored alcohols. "Not a bamboon... Bamboon? Baboon!" She laughed again at her own tied tongue before she managed to settle down enough to speak. "He looks much more like a troll, doesn't he? Not just his height, but his strong jaw and heavy brow. Very troll-like. Have you seen muggle trolls? Sometimes when I'm mad at him I imagine him with fluffy green hair like a troll doll and it makes it hard to be mad at him anymore."
In the morning, when her head would be pounding and she'd regret all the choices she made that night, Mali would be mortified by her lack of filter and the fact she informed Meg about her brother's love life. Tonight, however (or was it this morning? Gods, what time was it?) she found it hysterical. "You asked!" She laughed, then groaned because laughing didn't help her feel any less nauseated or dizzy. Mali pressed her head against the bar, eyes closed tightly. "People actually do this for fun?" she asked, incredulous that others found what she was pretty sure was going to turn into alcohol poisoning fun.
It made achieving her objective so much harder. It was hard to remain mature, calm and collected when alcohol was whispering little sassy comments in her ear and making her laugh. "Takes someone ridiculous to know one." What... What was she saying? Alcohol said it was cool though, so she went with it. "Bloody Hufflepuffs." she nodded from her barstool. "What are you looking at?" Mali demanded when Meg looked down at the bar. "I already cleaned that for you. Or it dried up, s'only water." Nevermind she was currently fidgeting with a spot on the bar that was nowhere near where she petulantly knocked over the glass of water. "Have you got anymore alcohol?" She didn't feel nauseated while drinking, only when she stopped. The natural solution to that was to drink some more, wasn't it? Focus. She needed to focus on the potion and not pestering Meg... although pestering Meg had been about the potion. Mali managed to muster brief lucid moments that broke through the bubbly alcohol euphoria.
"We aren't really charging a fixed amount. Just what you can muster." That sounded like a good compromise. "The point is to taken the burden off the werewolves and taking all their money is the opposite of that." She paused and looked confused with herself for a moment. "Taken the burden? Taking. Taking the burden. We use the money from my Ministry job strictly for the potion." A smug little grin settled on Mali's face, lighting up her features. "It's like a big 'Sod off' to them, isn't it? Could you imagine the Minister's face if she knew that every knut the Ministry paid me went to making werewolves lives easier?" It would be absolutely hysterical. "Eoin and I knick what we can't afford from the pharmacy and we've developed connections to help us get the 'out of stock' supplies the apothecary claims they don't have." Mali shrugged to try and play it off as no big deal but there was no hiding the smile that pride coaxed onto her face. She was proud of what they'd done, all of them. Her and Eoin, Theo and Remus too. They managed to do some really good work. "And the 'connection' is nothing to worry about. People in Knockturn don't ask questions as long as the money's good."

Good gods. She was an easy one, wasn't she? With Mali laughing at nearly everything she said, Meg couldn't help but feel good. She liked making people laugh. She lived for it. And it didn't bother her in the least that she mostly just made drunk people laugh - because at least they were laughing, and not sobbing. Or bothering her. "You're silly," Meg said, full on grinning now. "Now I see why you two get along so great." No one was sillier than Theo, Meg knew that for a fact. And now, imagining him as a troll...that did it for her. Meg joined in Mali's laughter, shaking her head. "You are absolutely right. Make sure you tell him that at every chance you get." And thanks for the ammo, kid.
Meg dramatically grimaced her way through the rest of Mali's laughter - not everything about Theo could be funny to his sister, certainly not the details of his intimate relationships - and then watched the girl closely as she seemed to be going through the swimming phase of her drunkenness. Bobbing up and down on a sea of alcohol, feeling great one moment and not so hot the next. "People with an actual tolerance for the stuff, yeah," Meg nodded. Then Mali was popping up again, asking for more alcohol. Meg looked up from the mark on the bar and shook her head. "Sorry, I'm clean out," she said from behind her very well-stocked bar. Meg was hardly one to deny a paying customer, but once they started throwing up, considerations had to be made.
Mali eventually seemed to reach some sort of middle, kind of, able to hold a conversation without too much giggling or heaving. Meg liked the answer she got, for more than one reason. Her coworkers made little money here and they didn't need anymore stress in their lives. What Meg really liked, though, was how proud Mali was to tell the Ministry to sod off with her little rebellion. She was even stealing! The hospital was just as guilty as the Ministry, in Meg's opinion. All of her friends were too afraid to go there, even if they were dying, and that certainly told you something about a place, didn't it? Meg smiled at Mali, but at the last thing the girl said, Meg's eyebrows shot straight up. "You? On Knockturn? That's not suspicious looking at all." It was also kind of impressive. Mali was obviously dedicated to this, willing to risk a lot for it. She was spending money and time and even safety just to help people. Meg returned to the little divot in her bar, worrying it with her finger and thinking hard. "You said you had someone who was taking it already? And I could talk to them, to make sure it's all you're saying it is?"

Silly. Meg thought she was silly and it only made her laugh some more. "Blimey!" the witch exclaimed through the giggles. "That's the nicest thing you've actually ever said to me! The Ice Queen Supreme's heart's melting! Brilliant!" She was cracking herself up and laughing so hard that she had to wipe away mirthful tears. "I do all the time.. Not the green fluffy hair, but the troll bit. You know what you should get him for his birthday? A troll club. So he could play with all the other trolls. He'd be thrilled to bits, he would!" She was so funny tonight, maybe the alcohol thing wasn't so bad.
Except it was. It was terrible and made her regret her life decisions as the ugly side of alcohol reared it's head. Meg was holding out on her, claiming that the whole bar was fresh out of all the alcohol and Mali had the sense to doubt her. "You're lying." the witch challenged, standing up to lean across the bar and peek behind it. "There's plenty here. Why would you lie? You're in a bar. I may date a troll but I'm not thick like one." Instead of reaching for it she only groaned and slid back onto her bar stool. "I don't want to do this again." If only Meg would have talked to her in the start she wouldn't have had to camp out at the bar all night but in a way, this was better. Neither woman would ever admit it to the other, but Mali would swear they were bonding over giggles and bubbles.
Meg even seemed to hear her when she spoke. It was her turn to look at the bar and she did, scratching her finger nail along a groove in the wood. "I suppose it sort of is." And it was likely why she got picked on by others when she went there, although it was better when Theo came along. The first time by herself she had to fend off a grabby drunk man and then Theo got attacked when he went on his own. That's why they needed each other, wasn't it? To face the darkness together and back each other up. "But I've managed it alright so far.." She nodded her head, feeling a little thrill in her chest at the question because it meant that Meg was at least considering her offer. "Mm. You can talk to Remus... You'd know him as Professor Lupin. He can assure you that Eoin and I are not out to poison your wolf friends. And you can trust him because he's a professor and a werewolf. We've been making it for him for a few months." She paused for a moment, the wheels in her head turning and squeaking, lubricated by the alcohol her brain was floating in. "And you could come by and see the potion, we brew it in our kitchen."

Meg rolled her eyes at Mali's silly, uncontrollable laughter - though she was grinning madly herself. If Mali wasn't offended by being called silly, but rather took it as a compliment...well, who could possibly dislike a person like that? Maybe it was just the drunkenness that made Mali tolerable, but Meg doubted it. That spirit had to come from somewhere, a core piece of Mali that Meg had chosen to ignore before. And by the gods, what a time to notice it. They couldn't just bond together over making fun of Theo and not be different afterward. "That's brilliant!" Meg said through her own giggles, just imagining the look on Theo's face. It had to happen.
Mali was definitely silly and it may have come straight from the heart - but she was also definitely still drunk. Very, very drunk. Meg doubted the girl actually wanted another drink - that was all the alcohol talking, not her - and Meg definitely wasn't going to serve her. Mali saw right through her lie, making Meg giggle again as she checked the bar herself for any remaining alcohol and then promptly declared she wanted none of it. "Exactly," she said with a brisk nod, grabbing more water just in case.
All that giggling lifted Meg's spirits considerably, even when they got to the part of the conversation Meg was dreading. Instead of feeling irritated and defensive like normal, though, Meg was...impressed. Maybe even a little inspired. Mali was braving places like Knockturn Alley for this endeavor of hers, and showing no signs of fear of it, either. Meg watched her, thoughtful, as she waited for an answer to her question. There was no harm in talking, right? The name Mali gave her made Meg blink in surprise. "Really? Professor Lupin?" Meg knew he was a werewolf, a lot of people did, but it felt...strange?...to acknowledge it in such a way. And she knew it would feel far weirder having to question him about it - but she had to do it, for her friends.
Before Meg could answer Mali, though, the girl made another offer. That was pretty generous of her, though Meg had to admit, she wouldn't know wolfsbane from amortentia. It would be nice to see it in person, however, know it was the real deal. "Yeah, okay," Meg nodded, taking a deep breath. "Okay. I'll come by. Think you can get Professor Lupin over there too, so I could talk to him?"
