Night

Because any sunlight hitting Knockturn Alley was weak, and never managed to reach the right angles, the thick layer of grime coating everything from the stair rails to the doorknobs was rather hard to discern - until you stuck your hand right in it. The only thing worse than that, was not being able to see it at all in the pitch black of the night. That is to say, Knockturn was a thousand times worse at night than it could ever be in the daytime, and Theo Ashland was figuring that out very quickly and at the most inopportune time imaginable.
The only times he'd ever been in the Alley this late were when he'd been drunk. He supposed people didn't bother him then, because once he started stumbling around and swinging his fists at everything, he really did look like a troll. And if they did bother him...he acted like one, too. That Theo was not the one skirting along the walls of buildings now, trying to look small and move fast - two things he was utterly incapable of even if he was stone-cold sober, as he was now. He knew he was drawing attention to himself but he couldn't help it; this place gave him the fucking creeps and he wanted out as quick as possible. Theo had become incredibly humbled by all that happened to him over the past year. He called it humbled, other more qualified people would probably call it traumatized. He had more fear in him now. Theo had more than his fair share of most emotions, fear had never really been one of them. Now shadows were making him grind his teeth together while he walked. He kept a tight hold on his wand, not bothering to hide it.
He tried to think of Mali while he walked. She was basically human sunshine, and he was doing this for her. He would much rather it be him than her down here - but he would much, much rather it be neither of them. This was way too sketchy. Theo knew Mali was committed to this idea, though, and he couldn't keep stepping on all of her dreams. He helped her, did what she asked, even the dangerous bits. He didn't know how long he could keep it up, but he could just hope it would get easier and keep thinking of her while he was down here.
He might have been relying on that a little too much, because by the time he got to where he was going, Theo was distracted. He didn't notice there was more than one guy lurking in the shadows of the alley until it was too late and they were all around him. The first thing they did was knock his wand out of his hand, and that was about the time his mind went dark. People were always doing that to him, taking away his wand, like they knew full well that he was big and strong but he couldn't punch four people at the same time and he was going to need that wand. Most of those people doing that to Theo were Death Eaters, and that's why the panic was starting to creep up his throat. He didn't recognize any of these faces around him, but it was pretty fucking dark.
