Everything was dark and warm. Mali was in one of her favorite places, wrapped up in Theo's comfortable embrace. They'd spent the night together which led to pleasant dreams about silly things that she couldn't really remember once she woke up. She did remember how they made her feel, and that was happy. There was no possible way to be sad about anything right now. The sun began to peek through Theo's bedroom window, beckoning her out of dream land and into the present where she was still happy and content, 'til the witch realized what it meant.
There time together was drawing to a close. Soon she'd have to get up and be off to work and so would he. When would they be able to see each other again? Their schedules were so busy. A thought inched it's way through her brain, something she'd been thinking about for a long while but never too hard. "Theo." Mali propped herself up on her elbows before poking the slumbering troll in the side.. "Theeeeo." As an early riser it was only natural for her to be up before him and she should feel bad about waking the man but somehow... This question felt too important to wait another half hour or more. "Wake up, sleepy troll."
It wasn't a question she could answer herself, really. "Should we move in together?" Seeing more of Theo was always a positive, but things were comfortable how they were. The questions kept bubbling up, too. If they thought about that future, then what about the rest? "What are we doing with our life? Are we gonna get married? Have babies?" A mini Theo would be too precious for words, but she was still pretty young. "Maybe we should start with adopting an owl together or something to try it out? Or a puppy! Not a cat, I've got enough of them, honestly. They're sweet but goodness do they shed. Do you think Greta would get jealous? She'd be fine I think, if I brought her a present. A nice shiny galleon or something." She was talking a mile a minute, not allowing for a word in edge wise as her freshly recharged mind ran wild. "I sort of like the name Muriel or Ethel. Unless it's a boy dog... Oh, I don't know any good boy names! Maybe we could call him Theo Jr, but then you'd get confused if I was talking to the dog, wouldn't you?" The witch tapped a finger against her chin thoughtfully before looking to Theo. "Can we go look for a dog after work? I think I'm free tonight."

The sun had to do a lot more than peek in to wake Theo up - it was more often screaming and shouting through the window by the time he blinked and yawned his way into consciousness. Theo was an extremely heavy sleeper - not surprising, most trolls were - but there was one thing even the loudest snores and deepest dreams stood no chance against: Mali's persistence. That little poke in his side cut straight through a thousand layers of sleepy fog, straight to his consciousness. The whispers of his name dragged him up through this new column of weak early morning light, and soon enough, a bleary Mali was swimming into Theo's newfound vision.
Alright, he was awake. But he wasn't ready to move yet. He stayed just as he was, looking at Mali, trying very hard to listen to what she was saying but his systems were still booting up at this point. Was she really asking him questions, right now? Theo loved every little piece of Mali - her curiosity, her openness, even her bright-eyed tendency to rise with the sun (she was especially adorable in this light) - but there was no way she could expect him to give a straight answer right now. At least give him five minutes.
Or...just ask the exact right questions. At the sheer volume at which she was asking them, even sleepy Theo was able to catch on to what she was on about - and it was very...awakening. Not Theo's ideal time to have this conversation, but one he'd been wanting to have. Questions that plagued his thoughts more and more every day. He sat up a bit as Mali was still talking, propping himself up on an elbow and leaning his head against his fist. Mali's rambles always made him smile; and even more so now, because he especially loved this topic and the fact that she was thinking about it too, and apparently with some urgency (she didn't wake him up all the time just to talk). He loved Mali to death. Not having her in his life at this point was inconceivable. He wanted everything with her, all of it, now and forever.
"Okay," he laughed sleepily when she finally took a breath, resting his free hand on her hip. "Okay. Let's start with the dog and work backward. I think we should do it." He grinned broadly. This felt like a phase change between him and Mali, something deeper, and he was feeling all sorts of happiness in his chest for so early in the morning. "We can just call him Junior...let's go tonight." It was way too early in the day to be making plans, too, but Theo's mind was thoroughly entrenched in the future right now. A future that he could share with Mali. He moved his hand up to her face, stroking his thumb along her jaw. "All that other stuff...do you feel like you're ready?" He was. "Do you really want to live with me? It would be really nice to see each other every day." Theo thought this was an easier decision for him. He wasn't getting any younger and Mali was by far the most important person he'd ever met in his life. She was younger than him, though, quite a bit. Things were so comfortable between them now that - no matter how badly he wanted it - he hesitated to push forward. They had time, didn't they?

Suddenly things felt like they were moving very, very fast. They'd gone from peacefully dreaming next to one another to excitedly chattering about things like 'the future'. It was a little jarring when she finally gave Theo space to get a word in edge wise and her mind slowed down enough to process what was happening. It was all her idea, of course. Or at least her idea to broach the subject but it was just a little terrifying.... And exciting of course. The prospect of waking up next to Theo every day was very very inviting. Morning Theo was one of her favorites, when he was still heavy with sleep and so purely him. They thrived on sweet little moments like this, where they were soaking up eachother's closeness and to have that every morning?
"You're so smart." she said, laying her head down on her folded arm to admire the handsome troll as he worked backwards through her babbling chatter. Her own free hand moved down to tangle up with his as it rested on her hip, her fingertips grazing over the back of his hand and up his arm. He even had a solution for their naming problem. "And what if it's a girl dog?" Because he surely had a good idea about that too. Names better than hers, probably. "I bet we can find one that sort've looks like you, too." Dogs with angular faces and heavy brows shouldn't be too hard to find. He would be such a good pet parent, too. Greta liked him, at least. Not that she was very pickly..
Mali smiled as the caress of his thumb, turning her head just enough to brush her lips across it in a light kiss. "I think that you're the person I want all of those things with. I don't know how to be ready, I think you're just supposed to do it anyway." She wanted to live with Theo, of course. This every morning? Who wouldn't. But the wording on it was very... touchy. She wanted to live with him, but not with him. "I want you to come live with me." Her little flat with Eoin didn't have a lot of space, it was cramped at best when Theo was visiting but the alternative involved Meg knowing where she slept every night and that wasn't bloody happening. It might be a slight monkey wrench thrown into the conversation, at least she felt slightly disenchanted with everything that she was eager for moments ago.
Still, the prospect of pet adoption and vows and little Theo's was pretty appealing. Or at least the pet adoption and little Theo's bit was. What did vows really mean, anyway? There was no way she was daft enough for an Unbreakable Vow but the rest was just words, expressions of love and she expressed her love for Theo all the time.

Smart. Mali made him grin while he talked. He wouldn't call it smarts, just an uncanny ability to hang onto her every word even in these wretched (and sweet, very sweet) early morning hours. Theo always listened to everything Mali said because, really, she was the smart one and he would be smart not to miss any of it. "Junior still fits...Mali Junior." The image of a hyperactive little Mali dog gave him the morning giggles, deepened when Mali added an image of a Theo dog next to it. He was shaking the bed with his laughter, his sleepy brain not quite caught up with reality yet and not in any rush to get there. "Yeah, me and puppies kind of have the unbearably cute thing in common," he teased, wrinkling his nose.
These mornings really were more sweet than wretched (even though Theo really did not like mornings and being awake in them); his and Mali's usual of going from sweet to silly to sweet just made more sense in this kind of light and silence. His giggles relaxed into a smile as he peppered her with questions this time and she answered. Theo didn't hate those answers. They sounded like they were on the same page, really, wanting this forever and also realizing forever was a long ways away. They had time. Theo took his hand back down and pulled Mali closer to him. "I want that all with you too, but I think you're right. We're already doing it. I don't think we need to force anything. We just let it happen when it does." He laughed again, softly, at Mali's suggestion for their living arrangements. "You, me, and Eoin? In your tiny little flat? I can barely stand up in the thing." He kissed her nose. "We could get our own place, you know."

Theo was smart and funny, too. Mali gasped at his suggestion, propping herself up on an elbow and a hand up on her hip. "You are not naming a dog after me!" She tried to be serious, but it failed miserably and she flopped back down, shaking with laughter right along with the bed. They laughed together and it was so wonderful that she couldn't even think of a witty counter to Theo declaring himself to be unbearably cute. She simply pressed closer to Theo so she could plant a kiss on that wrinkled nose because he was being unbearably cute.
Theo pulled her closer and she could settle right up against him, cuddling into his chest. Blast the fact that this would eventually have to end because she could easily spend all day wrapped up in Theo's warmth while listening to him being both smart and cute. There were no heavy thoughts about werewolves or worry about the Ministry here. There was no shame or incompetence, no fear about Death Eaters. Only them, like the whole world didn't exist as long as they were cuddled up in the bed and this was their secret refuge from it all. She felt content and warm and comfortable. The sound of his laugh set her heart on the most wonderful edge. "Right, don't wanna force anything." See? Who said trolls were dumb? She had the smartest Troll in all the land right here.
"Do you really need to stand up?" Bloody copy cat kissing her nose, her face melted into a smile anyway, despite his move stealing. His suggestion did manage to pull Mali out of her bliss a little bit. Her face fell as she thought about it. If they really did want to take steps that meant there would be a lot of changing. "I dunno how easy it would be to convince Eoin to move, we've lived there since we left school. Plus, we've got a standing appointment every Sunday to get manicures and pedicures." Mali brandished her fingers, wiggling them. This week she was sporting dark blue nails with little golden stars painted on them. "It'd have to be in London so my dad's could visit, too." Mali pressed her lips together before grinning smugly. "We've already got a place that's in London, that Eoin likes so you should just move in with us. We'll add you to our Sunday appointment and you can have them paint little trolls on your toes."
She ran her thumb along his jaw and over his lips, hoping to lull him into agreement with light touches. "Just move in with us. It makes the most sense. Then we could have this every morning" At least every morning that Eoin wasn't sleeping right next to them. If she thought about it the lack of privacy would be a big reason that 'getting our own place' made the most sense, but all she could think about was how much she liked where she lived and how reluctant Eoin would be to leave it and Eoin had to come. He was her best friend and they belonged together, just as much as she and Theo did.

"Oh, but it's fine if we name the dog after me," Theo said in mock affront, laughing far too much to pull it off at all. And being kissed far too much to care about anything else at all. Despite the possibility of morning breath, he couldn't help but sneak a peck up on Mali's mouth when she was done with his nose; not that he had to be fast, she wasn't going anywhere. She settled in nicely against him and in this moment, the very thought that anything could ever go wrong for them seemed absurd. Everything felt so right. The world was out to get them, for sure, but always together - never separate.
Theo landed another kiss, marking a change in their little morning rendezvous, falling from silly to a little more serious. He knew they couldn't just kiss and cuddle forever. They couldn't even stay in this bed forever, and not just because they had to get up and go to work in a few minutes. If they were going to move forward together, they had to decide what got left behind. Mali was adamant that Eoin was not one of those things. Theo liked Eoin, he did, and he liked that the little pharmacist made Mali so happy. Theo had no intention of leaving Eoin behind, either; maybe just...moving him out of the way a little bit. Just a little. Theo searched Mali's face pensively as she spoke, her love for her best friend so bright and evident Theo almost felt guilty for wanting to live with his girlfriend on their own. "I wouldn't mind living in London," he conceded. "It'd be different. I think it would be nice to live in the city...with the occasional pedicure."
Oh, no. Mali knew exactly how convincing she could be, touching him like that. Theo would agree to damn near anything. He kissed her again, on her thumb, and smiled at her. "Mm...and Eoin would have no problem rolling over and joining us from his bed that's five feet away," Theo said a bit guiltily behind his smile. He ran his fingers along Mali's spine, because two could play at that game. "What if it was just me and you, our own little place? Eoin could be our neighbor or something. Or...I dunno. Are you happy? With how things are now? It sounds like we both have things keeping us where we are."

"Theo's a lovely name for a dog!" She rather liked the name and it had nothing to do with who it belonged to or the fact that she liked to hear it all the time. No biased at all. "Mali's not! Can you imagine? A dog named Mali!" Imagining it would've only made her laugh harder but it all the giggles had to come to an end in favor of things like kisses and cuddles. The witch was swaddled up in trollish warmth and love, content with the world as they planned out their future even though their plans weren't exactly matching up. It only made sense for them to live together.
Her handsome man troll even agreed to London. "Oh, it's brilliant!" she enthused happily, not paying mind to any guilt or hesitation that might've been lurking in his voice. "You can't really appreciate it when you're visiting. You've got to experience truly living in London to understand why it's better than nice! There's so much to see and do and taste!" At the word 'taste' her stomach piped up with a little growl. Tasting breakfast soon would be a good idea, but in the country one couldn't just pop on down to the local café to grab a muffin and a fancy coffee drink. (Okay, as a witch she could do it from anywhere, but apparating blindly into muggle territory was risky.) "Occasionally." she nodded, grinning with delight. "Occasionally every week." Apparently Theo was the only one making concessions today.
Theo's proclivity to kiss things that weren't her lips (like her thumb) sent a very pleasant shiver down her spine, the same spine that he was running his fingers along. "You're playing very dirty." the little hypocrite declared, her hands leaving his face in favor of his hips to pull him closer. "I doubt it." Not that cuddling with Eoin was a bad thing. Mali was a very physical being who thrived on contact and affection from friends and lovers alike. "There'd be no room in the bed, not with me and you and the cats and our new dog." She wasn't likely helping her own case here. Mali closed her eyes, enjoying his touch but the next words out of his mouth sent her away from him. The witch pulled away so she could sit up and talk to him better. "What d'you mean?" Had she heard that right? "What's keeping you here?" The comfortable haze of the morning was chased away by confusion and possibly hurt feelings. "You don't want to live with me?"

"Sounds pretty darn cute to me," Theo persisted just for the sake of it, just to keep them both laughing a bit longer. "Maybe a cat. Mali Cat." The dog was a done deal, whatever his name was. Other things, not so much. The combination of waking up with the growing feeling of uncertainty Theo felt in his gut was not really a pleasant one. He tried to stuff it away under more cuddles and many kisses, but it was getting harder to ignore with every word they spoke. He wasn't uncertain about what he wanted, he knew he wanted to be with Mali forever, just uncertain about how they were going to get there. That was nerve-wracking in its own way.
"I do like food," he agreed, latching onto the things he could agree to and putting the others away for future consideration. At the mention of food and eating, Mali's stomach growled. Theo smiled at her. "Do you have time to eat before you have to go? I can make us breakfast." It shouldn't be hard to convince the little Hufflepuff to live with him if he plied her with enough food, right? The weekly pedicures, though...well. "We'll see. I don't even look at my toes that often." They weren't anything special to look at, and he didn't think different colored toenails every week would change that that much.
"I know," he said, smugly, when Mali pulled him in even closer. "I'm doing it on purpose." He grinned, because she was, too. They both knew how convincing the other could be, and that's what made these conversations so high-stakes. They both knew what they wanted and would both work very hard to get it. Usually, that was fine, because they wanted the exact same thing. Now, that definition was a little blurrier. Same thing, different ways. "If we had our own place, we could have a bigger bed. And - more pets." He knew what Mali liked. Theo was still grinning at his own cleverness when she suddenly pulled away from him, the empty space left between them like that first too-sharp sunbeam through a morning window. Theo sighed and hauled himself up to sit, too. "I didn't say that. I've spent the last ten minutes telling you I do. I just mean, I have my family. I have things I like about living here. And you seem pretty content with your living situation at the moment. So...why give that up, if one of us ends up unhappy?"

Mali could only laugh at 'Mali Cat'. There was no retort that would do the name justice, so she conceded to Theo's witty banter. He won the fight, but he would definitely not win the war. Mali had a handle on it, she just needed to lull him into such a comfortable state that he was wrapped around her cute little recently replaced finger. The pair of them snuggled together, interrupted only by gentle teasing and growling stomachs, prompting a question from Theo and a nod from Mali. "Mm. Are there waffles involved? I can make time for that. I'll sneak in, they'll never know I was missing.." Was it the Ministry or Hogwarts she was running off to today? Sometimes she wasn't quite sure. Quitting the Ministry was very tempting but it was a useful little position and it delighted her more than it should that every knut the ministry paid her went into the wolfsbane potion.
When Theo talked about his feet she popped her head up to look at them, furrowing her eyebrows thoughtfully. "If they were prettier you'd look at them more often. Last time I splinched off my foot I had the prettiest aqua nail polish on. The Ministry witch who found the foot complimented me on it. People appreciate pretty toes." The witch wiggled her toes against the troll's leg, just for effect. "Burgundy is your color, yeah? I'd pick bright colors for your toes, though. It'll make you feel more sunny." He would need to feel very sunny to cope with the menagerie and the best friend and all it entailed. Not everyone was cut out to share their living space with so many other living beings but Mali knew that being together would make up for the lack of space so she wasn't worried.
Except.. Theo seemed very reluctant to move in with her. He played dirty. "Rotten cheater." Mali murmured against his skin as she settled against his chest, holding him as close as humanly possible. And then Theo dug himself into a deeper hole as she pulled away and sat up. He even sighed, which irritated her quite a bit. Like he was exasperated or something, like she was exasperating him. "Why d'you think one of us would be unhappy!?" she snapped, irrationally agitated by the whole situation. If they couldn't figure out how to live together how could they be together at all? "There's lots of things to like about living with me, and there are lots of things to like about living with you, too. That doesn't mean I'd be unhappy If that's how you feel then maybe I shouldn't stay for breakfast, wouldn't want to chance overstaying my welcome and making you unhappy, would I?"

"There will most definitely be waffles involved," Theo nodded, bopping Mali on the nose and smiling at her. "My little sneak." Mali could certainly be sneaky when she wanted to be, in all sorts of ways. One way was in which she was somehow, miraculously, convincing Theo that a pedicure didn't sound half bad. "You're the only one I want appreciating my toes," he laughed, bending a leg so he could attack Mali's wiggly toes with his. "And I suppose I could paint them, just for you." And make sure to wear thick socks whenever he was around anybody else.
Theo thought this was a pretty big compromise on his part, and he was ready to drop the rest and get back to cuddles and, eventually, waffles. They were knocked off that trajectory, though, when the cuddles ended abruptly. Theo felt a sort of hollowness at the sudden loss of warmth. "If you have to leave Eoin, you'd be unhappy. And if I'm so cramped I can barely breathe, I'd be unhappy. I just think those are dealbreakers for us." He tried to explain, but he'd said something wrong and Mali was stuck on it. Unhappy was a bad choice of word - it was more like...irritated, like they were both leanin toward now. "You're missing my point. I'd be happy if you were with me 24/7, but it's just you I want. Not your whole apartment. I want something that's just ours." He shrugged, unwilling to budge on that point.

"Sold!" The fastest way to a Hufflepuff's heart was through their stomach, but that was a bit of advice that Theo didn't really need. He was in her heart and had been in her heart for months and months. He belonged there, the promise of waffles only sweetened the deal. Mali wrinkled her nose under Theo's finger when he bopped and bit her lower lip in a useless attempt to keep a silly love drunk grin off her face. "Waffles are worth sneaking for." She reached a hand up to run her fingers through his short hair and playing with a strand or two. "So are you." She was sure she would sneak anywhere if it meant just a few more moments of early morning bliss with her favorite troll.
"They're very nice toes." Nice toes that would only be better if they were pretty colors. Mali was a simple creature who liked bright things and one could never anticipate needing another person to find their foot. Theo did concede although it came with a toe counter attack to combat her toe wiggle. "You're so sweet to me." A chivalrous troll who would paint his nails, just for her. She had won and they were hungry which meant they really should get out of bed, but she wasn't ready to give up such warm, comfortable feelings yet.
The bliss had turned sour so fast that it made her head spin. Theo implied some pretty heavy things and Mali just couldn't get over it. She created space between them and let her temper flare. The word 'deal breakers' felt very heavy and it dragged down her happy feelings from moments ago. How could they have deal breakers? "You breathe just fine when you're over." Mali countered sharply, allowing the petulance to cover up the fear that having deal breakers meant they couldn't work. It was a dire, petrifying fear and Theo's nonchalance over it was just another log to the flame, stoking her irritation and sharpening her tongue. "I'm not missing any point. If we can't work then what are we doing?" There was no hard edge to her voice, the question was a genuine one.
If they had no future then what was the point? The very thought made her blood run cold and she slumped and leaned against Theo so his warmth could chase away the cold, uneasy feeling. "I like how things are, but I want more with you. I don't want to visit you or have dates, I want to come home to you and I want to wake up with you."

Theo was an idiot, a plain idiot. He had Mali right where he wanted her, playing with his hair (his favorite feeling on Earth) and telling him sweet things, and very soon he would have waffles...but he had to go and ruin it all by being the stubborn ass he was born to be. He could tell Mali was getting upset, and while he still thought he had a valid point, there was no point in pressing it so much if she was just going to get upset. There was plenty of time for arguing later, but only a limited amount of remaining time in which to eat waffles together. But no. He couldn't stop, couldn't ever stop once he was bristled enough.
And when Mali traveled from just being upset to genuinely questioning their relationship, it only got worse for Theo. If there was anything he liked less than being emotional, it was being serious - this early in the morning, at least. He needed waffles before answering any questions, thanks. He made a point of yawning widely as he thought about how the hell to answer Mali's question. "What do you mean, what are we doing?" Asking one of his own seemed the best way to avoid that. "We're sitting in bed, when he could be eating waffles." He pushed the covers off of him like he was going to get up, but didn't move. "I think we work just fine."
Didn't move because Mali was back against him and the flood of her heat rewired his brain. He reached an arm around her shoulders, hugging her to him. "I want it all. With you. Have I given you any reason to doubt that? All I'm saying is, maybe it's not the right time. For this conversation, or for moving in together. I feel like we've finally been allowed to settle into this, us, and maybe we're just meant to enjoy that for a little while."

Poor, poor Theo. Under any other circumstance, Mali would be more than happy to run her fingers through his hair for hours. Being near Theo was one of her favorite feelings in the world, a sense of security and warmth seemed to just radiate off the troll like man which made her feel very tingly and pleasant. The only thing greater than the feeling of contentment was a fear so deeply rooted that not even the promise of waffles could distract her. Mali was terrified of losing Theo, ever since they were forced apart by the Ministry's house arrest. The feeling of loss and longing was so intense and deep, the only way Mali managed to make it through was because she knew Theo missed her too. But if they didn't work? If she was the only one missing him and their relationship dissolved for other reasons?
"You know that's not what I mean." Theo looked like he was ready to get out of bed, too. Mali worked to stay calm and level headed instead of folding under the anger that masked her fear. Maybe waffles would make everything better but the witch dashed all plans of them by sinking back down next to Theo. Things felt better when they were near and he nearly soothed away all her anxiety when he placed his arm around her but she wasn't quite convinced. "How can you say that when you were just saying that we'd make eachother miserable?" That wasn't quite what Theo had said but it was the gist of it. He didn't think moving together would make either of them happy.
"What d'you think is going to change?" Mali had to be literal about this, because her judgement was being clouded by very uncomfortable emotions. "You're still going to be tall tomorrow and six months from now. Eoin's still going to be my best friend." Merlin willing, at least. "Meg's still going to be scary. How's time going to make any difference? All it's going to do is frustrate me because I obviously want more than you do." If Theo really wanted to plan a future with her than it wouldn't matter where they lived, would it?
