Remus wasn't sure it was possible to pick a favorite season at Hogwarts - the castle somehow managed to make all kinds of weather beautiful - but he certainly had his preferences. Spring brought the school to life; not just the grounds, as the green grew back in, but the castle itself. Lionized spring breezes swept through the broad open windows in every corridor and tower, breathing life into the sleepy winter settlement. The sun, staying up longer every day, warmed its stones - drawing the castle inhabitants first to catnaps on the windowsills and in the sunspots, and then bringing them outside altogether. The castle woke up and its people did as well. The students were brighter, happier, louder - or maybe that was just how Remus was feeling, and he was projecting it on everyone else. Either way, springtime at Hogwarts was rejuvenating in a thousand different little ways and Remus felt good. Not wanting to waste a good mood holed up all by his lonesome in his office, around teatime Remus absconded to the kitchens for tea and scones. Surely, there was a house elf or two left that would remember fondly his many youthful visits; if not, he could be pretty bloody charming when he needed to be. Before long, Remus was armed with a proper basket of scones and a big pot of tea, and he continued his journey onward to the hospital wing. Having Mali in the castle was going surprisingly well. They'd worked it out, it seemed. Working together was probably a big contributor to that, giving them something to do while still allowing time together, and there were probably other things at work in Remus' life (and Mali's, too, her own other things) that finally made it okay to be Just Friends. Other things with floppy blonde hair and irresistible grins...but we digress. Remus pulled his mind back to the task at hand right before he pushed open the big hospital wing door. "Hello?" He called. "Are you busy?" Not immediately seeing Mali, Remus took in the space around him. A little more disheveled than he was used to - even for a space largely occupied by Mali, he mused fondly. She would probably have some wild and outrageous story to explain the current state of the room, and he couldn't wait to hear it. Remus crossed the wing all the way to the end, toward the back rooms. "Are you here, Mali? I brought tea." Mali Johar

The cats were all sick with a terrible feline cold and she wasn't exactly sure if nifflers could catch cat colds, but she didn't want to risk it. Plus when the Cat Clique wasn't feeling well they weren't really pleasant to be around and could be quite mean to poor little Greta. So, when Mali had to leave for work she packed up her trusty companion and brought her along to the castle. Surely no one would mind as long as Greta kept her nose clean. It was a disaster waiting to happen, as anyone who knew the Niffler knew that she couldn't behave herself if her life depended on it. The morning went well, Greta kept herself entertained by finding shiny ten pence coins she'd hidden around the hospital wing. The fat furry creature scrabbled around, checking under beds and on top of shelves while shoving the coins into her little tummy pocket.
Then a student had come by wearing a sparkly gold necklace. She treated the poor Ravenclaw's potion burn rather easily but watched in quiet horror as Greta slipped behind the third year and deftly unhooked the necklace, shoved it in her pouch and skittered away all without alerting the student that she'd been robbed. The Niffler skittered away happily and the student was sent on her way before Mali set to retrieving the jewelry. It wasn't an easy task, the witch chased the creature around the wing, knocking into trays and toppling stacks of bed sheets. Things were toppled off of shelves as Greta skittered along them, but she managed to corner the beast in one of the supply closests.
"You glorified rat!" She shouted at the creature, chucking a pillow at Greta as the furry little thing taunted her from a high corner. "You selfish, greedy little prat! Come down here right now!" It was harsh, but she'd already tried to sweet talk her out of her treasure, even offering up a handful of sickles and a highly polished spoon. There was a voice outside that distracted her just long enough to give Greta a chance for escape. The little Niffler took it, leaping from the shelf and darting out between Mali's legs. There was a surprised cry and a crash as Mali whipped around, catching a shelf full of empty vials with her shoulder and jostling several of them enough that they tumbled and shattered on the ground.
"Get. BACK. HERE!" she shouted, scampering off after Greta as the creature sprinted out of the store room, right past her visitor and towards the exit. Her eyes were low, following her thief of a pet and creating a recipe for disaster. Greta might have darted around Remus but Mali crashed into him, hard and sent them both to the ground in a mess of scones and a shattered teapot.

The closer Remus got to the far end of the hospital wing, the clearer he heard a muffled sort of shouting. It sounded like Mali, and it sounded like she was shouting at a...rat? Remus simultaneously furrowed his brow in confusion and grinned in amusement. Of all the people he knew...Mali would argue with a rat first instead of just catching it or killing it. Remus stopped outside of the entrance to the supply closets, standing guard should the argument not go well. Someone had to stop the little rat thief.
What came running out past his feet, though, was most assuredly not a rat. Too big for a rat, and way too smart. Remus stuck a foot out to cut off the niffler's path - was that Greta? - but the little beast swerved right around him. Remus didn't have time to see where she went after that, though - a resounding crash came from the closet and he whipped hastily back around in concern. "Mali? Are you alright?"
Remus managed all of one step to see if Mali was alright - because Mali came crashing through the closet door a moment later, and their paths met spectacularly. Mali hit Remus at full niffler-catching speed and Remus, hands laden with afternoon tea, was hopeless in trying to right either one of them. Poor bloke couldn't even catch himself on the inevitable way down. He fell hard on his bum with Mali half on top of him, smashing ceramic, tea, and scone all across the hospital wing. Remus fell with a yelp and landed with a groan. He shifted to get out from underneath Mali, once the feeling came back to his legs.
"Merlin. Are you alright? Was that Greta? Why's she here?"

Mali didn't fall nearly as hard as Remus did. He was a great cushion, absorbing the brunt of the crash as she tumbled right on top of him. The impact did manage to daze her a little bit and the Niffler staged a grand escape, squeezing her rotund little body (which was laden with shiny trinkets) through the doors that were barely left open. "That bloody creature!" Remus startled her, moving underneath and Mali scrambled back off of him, freezing mid scramble at his question. "Mmm.. Maaaaybe?"
She had no idea what Hogwarts' 'bring you pet to work' policy was but she couldn't imagine that it was very generous in the department of thieving rodents. "The cats were bullying her." Remus wouldn't tell, would he? Mali theorized it was probably safe to tell him as she picked herself up off the ground. The witch dusted off her hands before reaching to help her friend to his feet. "They don't feel well so that puts them in a mood. I didn't want to leave her alone to be picked on, she's very sensitive. Usually I'd take her to my dads' if I needed a Niffler sitter but they're on holiday in Rome." Mali's words were rushed, hurrying through them as she pulled Remus up. Once he was on his feet she pulled her wand from it's pocket and took off towards the door, calling over her shoulder. "I've got to grab her before she gets too far!"
Mali barreled through the door and stopped, crossing her arms over her chest with a huff. She looked left and looked right but there was no sign of the bloody rodent anywhere. "Merlin, she's quick." the witch sulked, turning back towards the hospital wing. "I've got no idea where she's gotten off too.. Accio doesn't work on living things either, does it?" It was worth a shot. She flourished the wand, calling "Accio Selfish Prat!" but nothing came whizzing through the air too her, much to Mali's disappointment.

As much as he just loved sprawling across the floor...Remus was getting old. He wasn't old, thank you very much, but he was getting there; so he was very grateful for Mali's haste to get off of him, because he could already feel the bruises forming. Nothing he couldn't handle, though. Mali seemed to be in fair condition, as well, and they had bigger problems right now - an escaped niffler! It was indeed Greta absconding out of the hospital wing, no doubt in possession of some shiny thing or another that wasn't hers. Remus cracked a smile up at a very guilty-looking Mali as she stood up. "Poor thing," he said with as much sympathy as he could muster, reaching up for Mali's hand and hauling himself up. He would have tried to say a little more, to better understand poor Greta's plight, but as soon as he was on his feet, Mali was headed for the door. Remus jogged after her.
"I have no doubt of the havoc she could wreak on this castle," he said as he peered over Mali's head into the hallway, trying his very best not to laugh. He knew Mali was very fond of the little rodent despite her faults...but surely the creature would come crawling back. Someone had to feed her. "I'm sure she'll come back. We can leave her some cookies out." Remus watched with admitted interest as Mali tried to summon the niffler. Practically, there were all sorts of things wrong with that tactic...but, well, it was worth a shot. When no niffler came zooming back through the air, Remus patted Mali's shoulder. "What shiny thing did she get off with this time? You could try to summon that back. I bet she would follow."

Old was subjective. Mali might call the man old as a way to gently tease him but there was no denying that given his age, Remus was pretty spry. He managed to mostly keep up with the frantic woman as she charged out in search of her runaway pet. She was disappointed to find the corridor completely Niffler free and empty of any clue that would at least point her in Greta's direction. A trail of shiny trinkets would have been nice but obviously too easy. She loved the little rat but the creature did have a unique way of complicating things. "I think even a flobberworm could get into trouble here." Mali remarked as she looked left and right in vain, hoping that she'd spot the fat little furball. Hogwarts had a way of making trouble for people and things to get into, the school was a breeding ground for mischief.
Cookies? Mali looked down the corridor, frowning. "You think she'd head for the Great Hall? She likes food nearly as much as she likes shiny things. "She'd have a field day in there with all the shiny goblets and forks." Her frown and irritation deepened when her pathetic attempt to summon the creature back produced no results. When Remus patted the witch's shoulder she looked back at him, tapping the tip of her wand thoughtfully (and carelessly, it wasn't exactly wise to go tapping body parts with your wand) against her cheek. "Mm.. A bracelet but I didn't get a good enough look at the thing to picture it clearly but she's bound to have a sickle or two tucked away in her pouch. I know what those look like."
Mali squared her shoulders and raised her wand, prepared to summon. "Accio Sic---You know what?" She stopped suddenly, mid-swish. "I dunno if money can be summoned." It would make stealing it awfully easy. She looked to the Defense professor expectantly, surely he would know. Before he had a chance to answer she shook her head "They'd expel us both for theft if you could." Summoning sickles in a school full of people who likely had at few of them stashed away for Hogsmeade trips would surely amount to a wave of silver zooming down the corridors.

Remus paused in his search at Mali's comment, staring at her for a moment. "Please don't tell me you have a pet flobberworm." Remus was generally taken with most creatures, magical or not, given his strict tolerance for only things non-human when he was in his wolf form - but flobberworms were pushing it. They were gross, and boring, and...flobbery. And it would not surprise him in the least if Mali ever decided to keep one as a pet; she was turning into a regular Hagrid. He had little doubts the two had probably at least met in Mali's school years, and he grinned at the image of an even smaller Mali trailing great, big Hagrid.
But now was not the time for reminiscences - they had a real, live niffler to catch. "If I were a niffler, that's where I would go," Remus nodded in agreement. All the shiny silver and scrumptious food her little niffler tummy could desire. "Shall we?" They were a bit of a ways away from the Great Hall, and covering up for Greta would be a lot harder if she actually got the chance to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting student body.
Remus took a few steps down the hall, nodding at Mali's vague description of the bracelet Greta absconded with. It wasn't much, but he could keep an eye out for anything shiny and roun- "Wait!" Remus snapped back around and faced Mali, waving his hands. That was a clever idea, but a very, very bad one. He stared at Mali, wide-eyed, and released his bated breath when she seemed to realize that a moment later. He nodded at her again, relieved. "If it's not being protected by some charm or another, I'd say you certainly can. I don't need to go to prison today. Nor do you. Who would feed Greta?" Remus was back to grinning, and back to walking down the hallway toward the Great Hall. He walked backward, waiting for Mali to catch up. "I think we're going to have to do this the old-fashioned way."

Mali loved all creatures that weren't spiders or insects. People and Nifflers and yes, even flobberworms. She shook her head at Remus' question before tilting it thoughtfully. "I don't have any, but wouldn't they do nicely in a terrarium?" Up on one of the bookshelves in their apartment, decorated with little bonsai trees or something. "Mm.. but we use flobberworms for potion making, I'd feel so guilty using it as an ingredient with one on the shelf. That would be a little cruel, don't you think?" Mali really should live in a farm, surrounded by all manner of magical creatures. Theo liked the country, maybe finding their own place wouldn't be terrible. It wasn't really the time to entertain that idea, they had a run away Niffler to contend with.
"Even if I wasn't a Niffler that's where I would go." the witch countered with a grin as she patted her stomach. The stereotype that Hufflepuffs liked to eat was not actually a stereotype, more like a fact. The quickest way to Mali's heart was with good food and sugary sweets. She nodded along with the 'shall we' asking "Think we could stop by the kitchens for a snack while we're there?" as they set out for The Great Hall. "After we find her, of course. D'you know how to get in? I could show you if you don't. It's a carefully guarded Hufflepuff secret." Thinking about food and how hungry she actually was (breakfast felt like it was days ago instead of hours) made her think very hard about ways to solve their Niffler-less problem.
Remus saw the problem with her plan just moments before she did and the werewolf relaxes visibly when she caught on to the problem even as he flagged her down from the spell. "It'd be a shame after all the hard work you put in to keep me out of prison, wouldn't it?" The pair of them grinned at each other like loons and Mali dismissed his thoughts on Greta with a short laugh as she jogged the distance between them to fall in step with Remus. "Greta wouldn't go hungry. She'd find someone who would feel sorry for the bloody rat and throw her a biscuit or two." She nodded her agreement with Remus' theory that they would have to do it the old fashioned way, sans magic. "Right, but we're going to need a plan. She's a slippery little beast and she's fast when she's absconding with treasure. Maybe we should lure her to us, got anything shiny?"

Remus wrinkled his nose at the thought of a flobberworm in a terrarium. 'Nicely' wasn't how he would describe it...more like grotesque. Mali's similar line of thought almost made him laugh out loud; he suppressed it at the last moment and it came out as a snort. "That sounds like it would be absolutely traumatic for the poor little worm." He shook his head, but he was grinning. It didn't surprise him at all that Mali would feel guilty over her potion ingredients, either. Really, even Remus thought it was a bit of a shame that wizards had seemingly squeezed some use out of every magical creature known to man.
Remus did laugh at Mali's similarities to her lost pet. She was a true Huffleuff, that one. "Good point." Remus never minded a trip to the Great Hall, either. Or the kitchens, for that matter. He opened his mouth to suggest the very same thing at the same time Mali said it, and he eyed her with a knowing smile. For a moment, Remus considered telling Mali he probably knew every secret this castle held, having helped create its map of secrets and all. Then he decided he liked better the way Mali lit up when she could teach him something a change, so he kept his mouth shut in that regard. "Sure! Sounds like yet another adventure. Hufflepuff secrets are always the best secrets, I always say. And I'm sure Greta will appreciate the detour, too."
"A darn shame," Remus agreed, all grins. Mali caught up with him and he spun back around to walk normally next to her. "She'd be as big as a house if she was left loose in this castle. The kids always go crazy over anything fluffy and small." The kids...and the adults. Everyone could appreciate fuzzy cuteness. Remus nodded along with Mali's idea for a plan as they took to the stairs. Hmm. Remus didn't own very many shiny things at all, especially not anything he would wear on his body. Except...
"What about this?" He held his arm up and shook back his sleeve, exposing a rather worn and tarnished watch. It's distinct lack of shine was highlighted as they passed a window, where instead of reflecting the light, the watch just seemed to sort of devour it. "Maybe...well. Let me try something." Remus unfastened the watch from his wrist and held it in his palm. He stopped still on the landing, and with his other hand, tapped the watch with his finger and cast a silent cleaning charm. Some of the tarnish faded away, allowing a little more silver to poke through. "Do you think she'd go after this?"
