Mali was already anxious and distracted when she arrived to work this morning. A former co-worker now knew her deepest darkest secret and she didn't trust that it was going to stay quiet. It felt like she was sitting on a ticking bomb, like it was only a matter of time before everything blew up in her face. The fact that everything was going well with her project and her professional life felt like illusion. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but things were going to go wrong and everyone was going to go down for something that was essentially her idea. She felt awful and on edge and helpless all the same. The witch wasn't allowed much time to dwell on that this morning, one of the potion cabinets was rattling. The students were quite the pranksters and Mali opened the cabinet with the trace of a smile on her lips, expecting to be greeted by fire crackers or some stinksap. She found the student's sense of humor to be amusing and didn't mind cleaning up a little sap. Besides, she could use a little levity to help make it through the day. What lurked inside was much, much worse. So terrible that it sent her sobbing from the hospital wing, leaving the creature inside. Mali grabbed a first year Slytherin who'd wandered by and sent him to fetch Remus. He was always one of the first people she turned to for help, especially now that the problem was right up his alley. When he arrived a puffy eyed Mali was leaning against the door to the hospital wing with her arms crossed over her chest and shoulders drooping. She was wiping at the occasional residual tear and chewing anxiously on the inside of her cheek. The sound of approaching footsteps drew her unfocused gaze from the floor and coaxed out a half hearted smile. "I'm really sorry to bother you." One day Mali would learn how not to depend on Remus to solve all of her problems, but not today. The problem had rattled her far too much. "I think a boggart's made it's home in the potion cupboard." She was good at charms and healing but rubbish at things like Defense Against the Dark Arts. Luckily, Mali got to call one of the best DADA professors Hogwarts would ever see a friend. She straightened up, pushing off of the door as she spoke. "I don't want you to get rid of it for me, I'd like you to help me do it myself... If that's alright?" The Healer bit her lower lip. Third years could banish boggarts, but Mali was always a bit to carefree to put much effort into DADA when she was in school. She knew she wanted to be a healer and that wasn't a required class for it. It was slightly embarrassing, but Remus was easy to be vulnerable with. He never had an ounce of judgement to him. ____________________________________________________ Remus Lupin

Eleven-year-olds weren't especially adept at conveying the depth of a situation. When the little Slytherin came wandering into Remus' office and told him the school healer was crying and needed him and not much else beyond that, Remus' mind immediately went to racing and his mouth to asking questions. Was she hurt, was she okay? When it became abundantly, quickly clear that he wasn't going to get anymore answers out of the doe-eyed little first-year, Remus skirted around him with a hasty pat on the shoulder and hurried from his office toward the hospital wing.
Mali was outside, and she was upright. Thank Merlin. She was indeed crying though - or had been very, very recently - and she looked all but broken down about something. Remus softened his approach as he came into her view, shaking off his own anxiety at not knowing what was happening in order to not agitate her own. He knew that look. Mali had something heavy on her mind. She managed half of a smile for him and he completed it on his own face, stopping at the door and looking down at her. "You're never any bother, Mali. What's the matter?" Ah. Boggarts. Remus sighed, running a hand through the top of his hair. "Blast. They're bloody impossible to keep out of this castle, I swear..."
Remus grabbed for the door handle when Mali moved, bringing his most trustworthy amusing imagery to mind so he could go handle this thing (he'd run into a surprising amount of boggarts in his day) - but Mali's words stopped him. She wanted to handle it herself; she just needed a little bit of his help. Remus' smile grew wider and he dropped his hand. "Of course. You know how I so enjoy turning everything imaginable into a teaching moment," he chuckled and bumped her lightly with his elbow. She would have to be in a good mood for this to work at all; but Remus was genuinely excited she was asking him to teach her something, as well. He was a simple man.
"I reckon we ought to practice a bit out here first. Do you know the spell?"

Remus was a wonderful friend, hurrying over as soon as he heard that she needed him. Mali knew she could always depend on him and because of that he meant the world to her. Their friendship was a special one that she enjoyed very much and that made it easy to scrape together half a smile for him, even when she was feeling so full of utter despair. He even assured her that she wasn't a bother, which she didn't quite believe. It might not have been a bother he minded, but it felt like she was always interrupting him for advice or help or something having become rather dependent on him for such things.
Mali didn't want to be dependent on him forever.
She was frustrated by her own need and decided that she needed to start learning how to cope with these things on her own. As always, Remus was able to fill that position beautifully. This was literally what he was paid to teach. "Can't say I blame them." she said, swiping away one last stray miserable tear. "Hogwarts is very appealing." For her it was the nostalgia and charming children, for the boggart it was likely the endless supply of dark crannies to tuck themselves into, allowing them to torment unsuspecting witches who'd only just arrived to work.
That witch watched Remus reach for the door handle, calling him off of the task in favor of teaching her how to do it on her own. The happiness it brought him coaxed her smile into a full one. "And you know how I so enjoy learning from you." Remus was smart, and he didn't mind sharing his smarts. He also managed to do it in such a way that didn't make his student feel like they were lacking or thick. Her inadequacies were sore spots for her, Mali was very talented with healing magic, decent with charms but defense against the dark arts? Who could really blame her, though. Hogwarts wasn't really known for having great ones. Professor Moody scared her a little too much to get anything accomplished. Then there was a toad, a bat and a Death Eater. By the time they managed to fill the post with someone adequate and permanent they had a lot of catch up to do.
"Mm.. No." Mali shook her head, mood significantly lighter than it had been minutes before. Remus' excitement was pretty contagious. "Defense Against the Dark Arts was never really my subject. I think if you ever saw my marks in that class you'd weep." It wasn't that Mali was a bad student but she had lived a very carefree childhood up until the second wizarding world mucked it up. Studying was not on a carefree person's agenda. "It's something funny though, I remember that. You're supposed to think of something funny too, I think?" Mali thought back to the image that chased her out of her own hospital wing. Theo's pained face as his body contorted and twisted into a hairy beast, there was no making that funny at all. "What does the boggart change into for you?"

"Yeah? You favor the dark cabinets and broom closets, too, then?" Remus teased her, grinning. She really had to be in a good mood for this to work, so Remus was going to work for it. It wasn't too terribly difficult, Mali was stoking his own good mood exponentially, telling him she liked to learn from him. Oh, goodness. Remus smiled broadly and bowed his head. "Let us begin, then."
Mali didn't know the spell exactly, but that was okay. She was on to it - and her noticeable rise in excitement was half of the work anyway. "There's always an open seat in my classroom," he offered, laughing. He waited to see if she came up with any other information before beginning. That was one of Remus' favorite teaching strategies - you would really be surprised at how much most people really knew, if you just gave them a minute to think about it. He knew Mali was smart, too - she could probably figure it out with pure cleverness. "That's right," he nodded. "The incantation is 'Riddikulus', just like the word. Pretty apt, I say."
Remus turned toward a vase sitting on an end table by the door and waved his hands at it, transfiguring the whole deal into a practice dummy. "You take your worst fear and turn it into something ridiculous, and then it has no power over you." He turned back to Mali at her question, light smile on his face. "The moon," he said evenly, shrugging. Remus knew it was a silly fear even if it was his worst one. "I'm assuming you saw it, whatever it was, when it crawled out of the cabinet? You don't have to tell me what it was if you don't want to; it's pretty personal for some people." His smile widened again, trying to keep the conversation elevated. "Though, if you need help thinking of something ridiculous, I'm your man. Want to give it a try?" He swept his arms toward the dummy grandly.
