Knockturn Alley wasn't a place you were likely to find Mali. There were too many dark, shadowy corners plus the worst sort of people who lurked in them. Today was exception as there was no other place that had what she needed. The witch took every precaution for the trip. Theo was coming along (but he needed the thing too), her wand was tucked away within easy reach and they'd gone at noon, when the sun was highest in the sky. Mali walked along the alley's cobblestone, bouncing excitedly on the tips of her toes with each step. She was trailed by a tall troll with the cutest puppy dog eyes, leading him only by a step and a half. "C'mmon!" she urged him along, ignoring the more gruesome shop displays lining the alley. Somehow the whole place still managed to remain dim, even as the sun's most intense rays tried to pierce through the dankness that Knockturn was known for. "It can't be that much further. D'you think it'll hurt?" Mali slowed her pace just enough to scan the signs of the stores as they passed them. Curiosity Shop, an old cauldron shop. "My dads both have matching ones and one said it was the most painful thing he's ever done, but he's a bit..." she paused, searching for a kind word to describe what she meant. "A little fragile." A condemned looking apothecary, a pub who's name had faded from it's signage. "It can't hurt more than regrowing limbs.... Can it?" Her own question stopped her in her tracks and she turned back to Theo for guidance with a concerned look on her face. Mali wasn't unfamiliar with pain, being very accident prone. She didn't even own any of her original fingers. "Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine." Eventually they managed to find the right place. Markus Scarrs Indelible Tattoos. "Here we go! Looks... charming." If not a little old and dusty. She stood outside of the shop, gazing up at the sign while twisting at the hem of her shirt. "Should our tattoos match? Is that too much commitment?" Commitment was a very strong theme in their relationship lately as they explored how deeply they wanted to go. They adopted a dog, that was pretty committed in itself but that wasn't magically inking something onto their skin. "I wanted a pygmy puff on my wrist, or maybe an owl. A Niffler? Something cute. Maybe my ankle would be better? What d'you think?" Theo Ashland

The last time Theo was in Knockturn Alley didn't go so well - but just like he did for her, Mali made Theo feel safe. They were just sort of bound to have that effect on each other now - for all the dank, grimy places and situations they'd been in together, they had to get their comfort just from being around each other. Mali's presence was a sign to him that, in some way, everything was going to be alright. No matter who tried to fuck with them today.
It was also the middle of the day, so they had that going for them, too. Even if Knockturn Alley was always sort of in perpetual dusk, the hint of sun sent most of the undesirables crawling back into their holes until true dark. There was also something brighter than the sun in the Alley, something contagious - Mali's excitement. Theo couldn't help but catch it. As the human canvas for several poorly thought out tattoos already, he didn't necessarily have first time jitters and concerns like Mali...but here was another thing they were doing together, and he was really starting to love those things. Little bonding moments he couldn't get enough of, solidifying a future they both wanted to share.
"Like the dickens," he teased, grinning at her back. His tattoos hadn't hurt that bad...but they also didn't move like the ones they might be getting today. This was his first time hearing tattoos could move, actually, and that was pretty exciting. When Mali stopped and turned back to him, Theo ungracefully stumbled to avoid bowling her over, and played it off by sweeping up her hand and kissing her fingers. "I doubt a tattoo is anything compared to splinching yourself every other week," he chuckled. "But I'll hold your hand anyway, as long as you promise to hold mine."
Theo started early on the hand holding, not letting go as they set off again. They eventually found the shop and stopped outside to take it in for a moment. "Looks...clean? Ish?" Theo smiled down at Mali as her brain set off in a thousand different directions and her mouth tried to keep up. "As long as we're not getting tattoos of each other's faces, I think we're good." Having something inked into his skin that reminded him of Mali sounded all good to Theo, no matter what the future held. Not like he would ever forget her, anyway. "I like owls, that would be cute. A little guy flying around your wrist."

Like the dickens. That gave Mali pause, along with her already established thoughts on the matter. Theo'd managed to her get her hand and was doing heart melting things like pressing his lips against her fingers, same fingers that had been splinched off countless times. "Hey!" she said with mock offense complete with a scoff. "That's not true! It's not every other week! It's been at least a month!!" A whole entire month. That was four weeks without splinching, dashing his claim of every other week. "Or.." the witch sheepishly admitted "Maybe three..." But his claim was still dashed with that three week stint. "Besides..." she wiggled all those regrown fingers "You sort've go numb to it after the second time a digit's been regrown. I think it's nerve damage."
She didn't quite believe his whole 'like the dickens' spiel but holding his hand was too appealing to challenge it. "Deal." His laugh made her feel warm and tingly inside and so did holding his hand. She towed him along by said hand 'til they got to the building. Clean-Ish was a good word for it. "Faces are off limits?" she questioned with an amused smile on her lips and eyebrows raised in faux curiosity. "Don't you think my face would look aces permanently inked on your forehead?" The imagery made her laugh and tipped off another stream of questions. "D'you really think they mean it when they say indelible? Surely we could figure out somehow to magic it away? Nothing's really so permanent that magic couldn't remove it?"
Permanent seemed like an awful lot of commitment, even if it wasn't Theo's face. What if she chose the wrong color? She liked pink now, but what if in two years she couldn't stand the sight of it? "But then... I've never been able to remove a permanent sticking charm.. Maybe they use it in the ink, or something. Maybe they really mean it." there was tight twinge in her chest, but somehow the fact that Theo liked owls helped her move past it. She liked owls too. "Me too. That would be." The witch held up her wrist and tilted her head, imagining a tiny inked owl circling her wrist. "What's your favorite color? I'll get it in that. Burgundy? You always look so good in it, it should be your favorite. Maybe that's why you were a Gryffindor?" She dropped her wrist and turned to face Theo. "Or maybe blue. You look good in blue, too." They were there for tattoos but Mali was so enamored with Theo that she slipped her arms around his waist, content to just hold him outside of the shop 'til the sun went down. Or until they decided on their tattoos."You look good in everything. What will you get?"

"Oh, terribly sorry love, my mistake. Every four-" Nope. Theo chuckled at Mali's (adorable) sheepishness, kissing her fingers again. "Every three weeks. Much better." He laughed again at her nonchalant attitude, an attitude only those all too familiar with losing all their fingers could have. "I...guess that's a good thing? Just remember to count them every time you go somewhere. I'd hate for you to bleed out and not realize it."
Or he could just hold onto them for her, that was fine too. Mali's fingers couldn't disappear off into the abyss if he was holding her hand (probably). They walked hand in hand all the way to the tattoo parlor, and then some. "Mm, you might be able to convince me," he grinned down at Mali, and then broke into laughter. "Okay. You've convinced me. I'm getting it, right here." He tapped the middle of his forehead. His eyes trailed up to the signage of the shop as Mali went on another spiel. He wasn't even really sure what 'indelible' meant...apparently, it meant permanent. Like the sticking charm. "Maybe," he shrugged. It made sense to him, putting magic in the ink. Wizards liked putting magic in everything. "Wizards are sort of disturbingly serious about commitment sometimes. Maybe we have to make an Unbreakable Vow with the tattoo artist first." That was a joke, mostly, and Theo winked at Mali because he could tell she was getting anxious. But again, he really wouldn't mind having the most permanent of permanent reminders of her somewhere on his skin.
But where? Theo tilted his head as Mali imagined her new tattoo on her wrist. He could see it, too. It really would be cute. A good spot to kiss, too, which Theo really wanted to do now that Mali was pulling him in close and peppering him with compliments. "If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were coming onto me." Theo grinned and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, kissing her forehead instead of her wrist for now. "I like burgundy. I've heard it brings out my eyes. That would be perfect, a little burgundy owl with my eyes." He laughed and tilted his head again. What was he going to get??? It was decision making time. "Gods, I dunno. I'm bad at these kinds of decisions. I want something that will instantly remind me of you. You don't look very much like an owl to me."

If he was going to do that, he could accuse her of splinching herself every single day. The brush of his lips against the fingers in question made her skin tingle and Mali fell just a little more in love with Theo. Love really was an endless abyss, whenever she thought she'd finally loved him as much as anyone could love someone he did something that managed to drive her feelings a little deeper. There was no end or cap to it and that was absolutely fine because it felt wonderful and he was sure to return the affection. The only feeling better than loving Theo was being loved by him. "No need to worry about that." she soothed, beaming. "I'm pretty good at not bleeding to death or even near death. I always check to make sure I've got everything when I arrive."
He, the beautiful troll that he was, was going to look even more beautiful with her face tattooed right in the middle of his head. Mali reached her free hand to tap the same spot that he did. "Maybe we can charm the tattoo to talk. Meg would like that, mm? She'd never escape me if I was plastered across your forehead." It would drive the blonde batty, that was for sure. "How is she, by the way?" There was a definite note of concern in her voice, Meg'd been through a lot, but she was too happy to dwell on it along. Soon she was pondering the meaning of indelible and Theo was bringing up Unbreakable Vows "I think you can break them if you had your fingers crossed." the witch mused as she gazed up at the sign, tapping a finger against her own cheek in thought. "That was the rumor 'round the common room anyway. Never did test it out." The wink and the joke did help to allay her anxiety a little.
There was that nice little skin tingle again, this time on her forehead. "Is it that obvious? You're hard to resist." There was no shame, only a wink of her own. Burgundy was close enough to pink and that made it the perfect color for the tattoo. A combination that favored both of them, Theo's darker features against her bright and colorful ones. "Well, won't my face instantly remind you of me?" she teased with a friendly little nudge. "Or maybe a Niffler? You can get Greta tattoo'd on you. Or a pygmy puff? I feel like they'd be my patronus if I had one. Small and cute and they to sing. I figure they probably like to eat too, that's why they're so round and fluffy." Her grin brightened at the mental image of a pygmy puff bouncing around on Theo's skin. "I dunno though, can you pull off something so cute?"

"Good. Glad to hear it. Because I like every piece of you." They were likely to get dragged through the streets for being so sickly sweet on Knockturn Alley like this, but Theo didn't really care. This place didn't scare him as much anymore, especially not when he was with Mali. And it didn't matter where he was, he would take every chance he could get to remind her to please remember all her body parts when she was Apparating. Because he did like them all, and everyone could use a little reminder now and then, couldn't they?
"That sounds pretty useful, actually. You're better at sassing her when she needs it." Theo laughed, but there was a definite sad note to his voice when he talked about his sister. He shrugged at Mali's question. "She's okay. I think she's embarrassed to go out much, which just makes it harder on her." Theo was still trying to figure out what exactly to do for Meg. She always used to let him take care of her. That's what he did. Now she shied away from even him, and the situation was sensitive to say the least. Theo tried not to let it hurt his feelings too much, to understand, hence not really thinking about it all that much. He could do that on his own time...despite the fact that she obviously cared somewhat now, he knew Meg still wasn't Mali's most favorite subject.
"I heard the only way to break an Unbreakable Vow was to die. I'm not ready for that kind of commitment with some bloke I've just met," Theo was smiling again, peering into the windows of the tattoo parlor now. Not for long, of course, with Mali being so sweet on him. His attention was back on her soon enough. "I knew it. I knew you fancied me." But they really did need to focus, if they were planning on getting these tattoos today. Mali answered the call of Theo's indecisiveness wonderfully, giving him several options to pick from. At one, he laughed and squeezed her shoulders. "Merlin, yes - pygmy puff! That's so you. I'm getting it." He gave her the best look of affront he could muster while still grinning at her next question. "Weren't you the one that was just hitting on me? Of course I can." He took another look into the shop and then peeled away from Mali, taking up just her hand again. "Shall we? We ought to get inside, at least, before someone starts throwing stones."

Definitely. They were definitely going to get dragged through the street for making the dark denizens of Knockturn Alley sick on their sweetness. "What a coincidence." she said with the most cheesily love sick grin that she had. "Every piece of me likes you, too." Oh, that didn't quite sound as clever or cute as it did in her head, but given the amount of love drifting between the two of them it wasn't likely to matter. They could fall back into nothing but Trollish grunts and it wouldn't dampen her happy, love drunk mood. They were about to permanently mark their bodies with little reminders of each other, nothing could dampen that.
First, they had decide what marks were actually going and where. Theo accused her of sassing his sister and Mali was tempted to stomp her foot and petulantly declare that she was not, in fact, sassy but there was a note of something in his voice and his laugh that was off. She knew all of Theo's nuances and edges, nooks and crannies. She couldn't hug away what had happened to his sister, but Mali could certainly try... So she did. She plastered herself to his side, an arm snaking around his waist to pull him as close as humanly possible. "I'm--" The requisite 'I'm sorry' when she heard something bad was dangerous here. There was a degree of guilt over what happened to Meg. The Ashlands would never be tangled up in the werewolf business if it wasn't for her and to apologize for Meg's misfortune would plunge her down a dark hole she wasn't ready to flounder around in. "She'll be alright. Meg's really strong, it's just gonna take a little bit of time."
Vows and death were surprisingly a lighter subject then talking about the youngest Ashland. Strange, considering how lively and bright the woman was. "S'a good thing that we never got around to trying it out then, mm?" Theo liked the pygmy puff idea and she laughed at the mock injured feelings. "You're right, they're going to throw stones at your over inflated ego. Where are you going to get the pygmy puff? On your wrist? Maybe your shoulder. It should be pink, don't you think?" The witch towed the big troll into the shop by the hand. The walls were covered with tattoo art. Grinning skulls that stuck out long, sinister tongues, thestrals that flapped their wings, snakes that slithered and Gryffindor-esque lions that roared. Somehow cutesy owls and pygmy puffs felt out of place there but Mali wasn't deterred, tugging Theo over to the wall to marvel at the drawings.

Mali earned herself a kiss, denizens of Knockturn be damned. She was too cute. Theo ducked down and caught her goofy, lovesick grin with a lingering kiss. A smile curled it's way over Theo's mouth, too, and it stayed there when he finally pulled back. Besides being potentially dangerous and life threatening, Knockturn Alley wasn't the most romantic of locations for a rendezvous and the irony was not lost on him. The two of them could literally get through anything as long as they had each other, and moments like this were pleasant little reminders of that.
And speaking of things to get through together - Mali answered perfectly to Theo's doubts about his sister. His arm went around Mali automatically as she stuck to his side and spoke some words of wisdom. Theo nodded in agreement, scratching at his beard. "Yeah. She'll be alright. Eventually she'll get clued in that she can use the scars to her favor, and then we're all in trouble." He was smiling again. Thinking about Meg and all the trouble she was going to get up to by making up stories and invoking intimidation and pity in people in the future was far preferable to thinking about her sad little self right now, hardly leaving her room and struggling to smile.
"The Vow, or the dying? I'm not ready for either, really." The fact they could make light of werewolf attacks and deathly curses, things they both knew intimately now, was another indicator of how perfect they were for each other. Theo couldn't talk so freely around anyone other than Mali. People didn't trust him anymore. Even when he was declared innocent, people still knew what he did. Mali knew, too, but she also understood. Death and dying were sort of old hat to them now.
"I think my shoulder would be good," Theo said as he was pulled into the shop. Especially if it was going to be pink...he definitely wanted it to be on his shoulder. "And definitely pink." He grinned at Mali, trailing her over to the wall covered with art. Nothing was remotely close to what they would be asking for, which just made Theo want his pygmy puff even more. It was something just for the two of them and it was perfect. He put an arm around Mali's shoulders and squeezed. "Are you ready?"
