Mali was happiest when she was solving problems. It made her feel useful, like a good friend. Remus' confinement to his home brought a whole slew of problems that needed solving and she had the added advantage of having 'been there' before. His imprisonment was much more gruesome than hers, considering her his hands had been broken in a makeshift way to prevent him from using his wandless magic. The poor man managed to make some things work by pawing them, but writing was not something one could 'work through'. As far as she'd heard from evasedropping and talking to the few people she still trusted within the Ministry, no one had forbidden Remus to write letters. They probably thought such a caveat was unnecessary, considering....
Luckily, the helpful little badger had thought of a solution. It took a few days to find the spell she was looking for and to perfect it but she managed to enchant a quill just for Remus. She packed it all up into a her designated 'sleep over bag' that was also packed with snacks and fun things for them to do (or at least that she and Eoin would do during a sleep over). Gabriel had set the precedent by staying over, Remus really did need company from someone over the age of five. She couldn't be there every day (or nearly every day) like he'd been for her, but she could make up for it in length of visits, right? She apparated to his door step, announced by a loud bang. Mali was apathetic to the whole 'secret' thing. Her work in the Ministry made her feel sour so if one wanted to fire her over her associations? Let them. There were no more hecks to give on her end. Her knock was happy and had upbeat rhythm to it. When the werewolf managed to get the door open she was grinning brightly and flourishing the quill like she was casting the fanciest, swoopiest of spells with it. The showmanship was accompanied by a sing songed "Heeeelloooo Remus!"
She stepped in and turned tp beam at him, holding the quill. "I've brought you something! It'll at least help you stay in contact with everyone! It's a quill!" she enthused, bouncing on the balls of her feet happily. "Not just a regular one, either! I enchanted it myself, you can dictate and it'll write. You don't even have to touch it. S'not like a quick quotes quill. I tried using one of those when I was in school so I could knit while I did my homework and it embellished my essays a lot. Cheeky thing it was, too! This one'll write exactly what you say." Handing it over, Mali grabbed her bag and brandished it. "Are you in the mood for a sleep over? I've brought all sort of snacks, coloring books for the kids, and..." the contents of the bag shifted on their own to allow a fat little niffler to claw it's way to the surface of it's burrow. "A niffler to play with Paks?"

Where Remus lost the use of his own two hands, he gained four tiny ones. Well - they'd always been there, attached to the twins, but they'd grown increasingly helpful ever since they all got back home together. Remus would never understand just what it was he'd done to be blessed with such good kids. They were like tiny little adults sometimes, swear. Remus thought they understood things too well sometimes, but maybe it was the opposite - maybe they were just kids, and they didn't understand anything, and they were just happy to be home like he was. Happy to be with their family, like he was. Either way, with four tiny hands at his command, Remus got almost half of what he needed to get done around the house. It wasn't bad, really, considering.
Of course, they couldn't be counted on all the time, and Remus didn't push it. Tiny hands needed to play, too, so when the twins disappeared Remus tried his best at pawing at whatever he needed. Yes, pawing, that's right. This was just like being in his wolf form, only with a lot more pain. Remus managed to turn pages and other such menial tasks, but not much else. Knobs, especially, were rather difficult. Gods help him if Molly Weasley ever found out, but he and the twins had been eating a lot of candy and snacks for their meals because none of them could maneuver the kitchen appliances very well.
And this is also why, when he heard a knock at the door, Remus looked up the stairs for a moment and listened. He was having a harder time with doors now. His hands were healing very slowly, but they were incredibly stiff now from being unused. The twins were very good at opening doors. Alas, they seemed to not hear the knock at the front, so after a moment Remus got up and went to the door. It took a lot of pawing with of his hands, but he eventually got the thing open, and his efforts were rewarded with a wonderful visitor. Remus smiled instantly at Mali because she was so bright and cheery, he couldn't even pretend to mope in her presence. Time with Mali was becoming a strictly no-moping time.
"Hello Mali," he stepped back and let her in, shouldering the door closed. She had a quill for him. Remus eyed it and listened, knowing there had to be more to it than feathers and ink...aha. Yes. Mali explained the whole thing very thoroughly, as she does, and Remus was a smiling mess by the time he held his palm out and she placed the quill in it. He held it in the light of the hallway lamp. "That's very impressive!" He said after a moment, looking back at her. "Thank you for this. You'll have to tell me all about what spells you used later, if you're willing to share your secret." Remus smiled down at her bag and nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely." Mali sleepovers were the best. He surveyed the contents of the bag as she sifted through it. "That's very sweet of you. They've been suspiciously quiet for the past half-hour or so, maybe we ought to take those up there and check on them." Remus laughed as one bag content shifted on its own and poked its little furry head up to greet them. "Hello Greta! She'll be delighted. Though...I have no idea where she is, either. Maybe with the kids?"

Mali swayed from foot to foot, eyeing the doorknob as it rattled and shook. It sounded like someone was trying to open it but having trouble doing so and she wasn't sure if she should just open it on up or let Remus work it out for himself. There was something said for accomplishing little victories on your own when one felt helpless. The witch wavered between each option, chewing on her lower lip 'til Remus made the decision for her, managing the door all on his own. That added a genuine brightness to her own smile, making the cheerfulness less feigned and more natural. If Remus could get the door open then he could take care of himself more than she thought.
The witch bounced on the tips of her toes as the pair of them greeted each other. It was a relief to see Remus outside of the Azkaban prison cell again. The more she saw him outside of it, the more it erased the terrible memory of the broken wizard in that wretched, desolate place. "Thank you!" Mali idolized Remus in a way, his approval was something she took directly to heart. "I can't guarantee the spelling will be perfect but it'll get the point across alright." She nearly cringed when he took the quill into his own hands, wanting to fix them but knowing that would only make it worse. She had to busy her own hands with her bag to keep them from reaching for her wand, the Episkey spell sitting heavily on her tongue. The Niffler was quite a distraction and she picked the creature up out of the bag. "I actually didn't know I was bringing her along, she must miss you. Or maybe she misses the kids. She's quite fond of them, you know. They're upstairs?"
Mali reached her free arm out to loop around Remus' waist as they headed towards the stairs to bestow the coloring books and assure the children weren't up to mischief. "How are you doing? How are your hands? I've got some potions in my bag that should help make them feel better. Also I was thinking about splinting them might help? Like muggles do... but I dunno? That might restrict what little movement you've got in them. Are you eating alright?" She wouldn't be Mali if she didn't ply him with a million questions as they climbed the stairs. "Have you heard from anyone else? Are your friends okay? I wish I could do more to help. Greta does too, don't you Greta?" When they reached the top landing Mali paused. "You're absolutely right.. They are suspiciously quiet. Are you sure they're home? I'd expect to have heard a crash or two by now."

"It's perfect." Remus smiled down at Mali and stuck the quill right behind his ear for safekeeping. A silly look, to be sure, but it matched the silly happiness he felt over the seemingly simple gift. Mali could have brought him the normal things like food or books to occupy the time, or she could have just not shown up at all and sent him her thoughts and well wishes, like so many others. Instead, Mali took a hard look at everything Remus might need in this predicament, and picked the thing that no one else would do. She had such a special way of looking at things, it always left Remus feeling slightly mesmerized when he thought about it too long.
Now was not a time to be getting mesmerized, however. There was a niffler in the house - it was like they could sense momentary human distraction, also known as the perfect chance to escape. Remus turned his smile on Greta, laughing when he heard she was surprise visitor. "We miss you, too, Greta. The kids always get a kick of tracking down the silverware again after you've visited." He nodded at Mali's question, glancing up at the ceiling. "Mm, in their room. I think."
Mali was close by as they headed up the stairs to find out, something Remus was thankful for. Damn his penchant for glorious old houses, because these stairs were killing him lately. He was exhausted all of the time; not being able to do magic would do that to a wizard. He tried not to let it show, tried to focus on the most interesting thing that had happened to him in the past few days as they walked up the stairs. "I'm alright. A bit bored. Restless." He held one of his hands in front of him and flexed it, making himself wince. "Thank you, I've already drank myself into my back up emergency reserves." Remus had a pretty high pain tolerance, but when he had literally nothing else to do except think about how much his hands hurt, the pain was unbearable. He shrugged at the idea of a splint. "We could try. I'm not doing much with them as-is. The kids are doing most of the handiwork." Remus ducked his head as she asked about how they were eating. "We're not starving, or anything. But I can't really cook, and neither can the five-year-olds, surprisingly."
Remus let Mali go on as she brought up his other friends, a darkness settling over his face. Having been unable to talk to most of them since the arrest, Remus had had plenty of time to lay many a heavy blame on himself for the hell they must also be going through. As one of the oldest Order members by default, he should have been more responsible. "I've gotten a couple of letters, but I think they're all pretty much in my same predicament," Remus said quietly. He glanced at Mali and Greta, a small smile growing back on his face just at the sight of the two of them. "I could never repay you for what you've already done for me, Mali, truly. But...," he hesitated, biting at his lip. "If you happen to hear anything, or find out, would you mind so terribly telling me? About the others, I mean. I don't want to burden you. I just want to know they're okay." Remus' attention was drawn away from the guilty feeling he felt at putting that extra burden on Mali, as she had stopped at the top of the stairs. He stopped, too, and listened. Pure silence. "Well, they're supposed to be here," he said with a hint of worry in his voice, glancing at their slightly askew bedroom door. He hurried forward and peered inside.
Remus' biggest smile yet spread wide across his face. Inside, Lily and Teddy were curled up on Teddy's bed with Paks tucked between them, fast asleep on an oversized book. They were all fast asleep, actually, and all on top of the covers. Neither twin could quite read independently yet, but by the looks of it, they'd worn themselves out trying to read to the cat. Remus beckoned Mali forward wordlessly as he stepped into the room and went to the bed, easing the book out from beneath Paks to put back on the shelf. On his way back, he pulled the comforter from Lily's bed and draped it over his sleeping children and kitten. Then he turned and shrugged at Mali, still smiling, and tilted his head back toward the stairs.
