Mali had sworn off Knockturn Alley for a little bit as every expedition into the dank place ended in disaster (minus the tattoo excursion, of course.) but she still needed a place for her seedy black market dealings over hard to find potion ingredients. It was hard to convince sources to meet you anywhere that might actually see the sun but they managed to settle on the alley behind the seldom visited junk shop. It carried a little bit of nostalgia for her, it was the first time she bled on Theo and when she kind of sort of started falling in love with him (although she would have definitely denied it that day) but it was chosen because not many people nosed around the dilapidated shop in the sunlight and even less did so after dark. Mali'd sent Theo along to meet the source while she visited the apothecary to get the readily available ingredients they were running low on.
Theo was really a fabulous boyfriend. He supported her projects even when the safety of her little endeavors was questionable. Making Wolfsbane was proving to be a perilous business. People were getting hurt and the legality of it all was less than clear. When he didn't show up at their arranged post-black-market-deal meeting place, Mali grew concerned. Had he been arrested? Surely Diagon Alley was safe from Death Eaters and their ilk. The witch waited a whole half hour before she went looking for the lost troll, wandering down the shady looking alley. It was dark, the moon hidden behind ominous dark clouds and Mali pulled her wand from it's pocket and murmured "Lumos." The tip of her wand ignited and bathed the alley in a dim white light.
Now Mali was never a fan of the dark, even when she was safely at home and tucked into a tangle of furry creatures and adorable roommates. She wasn't bravely waltzing down the alley with her wandlight held high, instead she was meekly wading through the shadows, deeper and deeper into what felt like a dark abyss occasionally whispering out a "Theo? Theeo!?". Dread was quickly forming a stone in the pit of her stomach and anxiety crawled it's way up her spine. A fat rat darted out from underneath a discarded pile of rubbish, startling her wand right out of her hand. It clattered against the floor, rolling away to just scarcely illuminate a large figure on the ground. Theo lay alone in the alley, blood soaking the cobblestone making the air smell like copper.
"Theo!" Mali yelped shrilly, hurrying to his side. "Merlin, Theo!" she dropped to her knees beside him, shaking the wizard 'til he groaned awake. Bleeding gashes decorated his front, damage from a nasty spell she'd seen before. "Oh Gods, Theo!?" Panic. Panic set in right away, freezing up her limbs. Her muscles felt lethargic and slow, like she was moving through jelly and the resistance was already exhausting. Her pulse was pounding in her ears, drowning out her own voice as she interrogated him. "What happened!? Did you see who did this to you? What spell did they use? Can you stand? Oh no, don't try to stand.. Let me fix it. I can fix it, I can---" Only she made no move to fix it, the urgency of emergency clouded up her mind and she seemed to forget even the most basic healing spells and protocols.

Whilst laying in a pool of his own blood, fading into unconsciousness, Theo had plenty of time to think. Unfortunately, due to the fact that a good amount of his blood was indeed pooling beneath his body and not within it any longer, he didn't have much brain power to think coherently. Thoughts came and went like clouds through his mind - not the dark monsters looming in the sky he was staring up at, but wispy little things with no connection or substance to be seen. He thought about potions, and werewolves, and then Death Eaters, and death. And he thought about Mali, of course. The memory of their time in this very alley was almost visible to Theo as he slipped between worlds.
Eventually his eyes closed, not that it mattered. Pulsing purples and blacks had encroached on his vision a while back, and the sky was as dark before that. Maybe it did sort of matter, actually - because when Theo closed his eyes, he stopped thinking. He stopped doing much of anything, including breathing. After his vision, his other senses started to slip away, too. The sting of copper from his blood grew weaker. The stones beneath his body, while never comfortable, lost their solidness. And the strange whispers of the alley faded into buzzing silence.
Scratch that. A noise louder than anything Theo had ever experienced, he thought, cut across his hazy mind. It was shrill and sharp. He could feel the stones again, too, scratching against his arms and back as they roiled beneath him. Only...it wasn't the stones, was it? Something else was touching him, on his other side. When Theo thought about his front side, he registered the pain in all its searing glory. It sent him reeling, all five senses swelling back into being in an overwhelming - and nauseating - second. He made a terrible noise and opened his eyes.
He was sorely disappointed to find the vision, the memory of Mali in this alley, hadn't gone away. He didn't want that to be his last memory, the time she'd almost bled out. He could still even taste it, smell it - but why was he feeling it? Theo tore his eyes away from Mali and looked down at his torn open chest, and when he looked back up at Mali she seemed much more solid and real. Theo caught back up with time and realized this was not a memory.
"Mali." His croaky voice cut across hers. Theo raised his arm in jerky movements and pressed a finger against her lips, another memory manifesting around them. Mali, panicking over an injured man. Saying she couldn't do it. Theo moved his arm upward with effort, tapping Mali's temple. "You know." It hurt to talk; he had the strangest feeling of being submerged from the inside out. Theo dropped his arm, his fingers landing across Mali's lit wand. He rolled it toward her.

Theo couldn't be dead. Even in the worst of her nightmares he was always alive. Maybe drastically changed (like a werewolf) or in pain (as the victim of the cruciatus curse) but Theo seemed so invincible that she never really pictured him dead. They'd lived through too much together for him to be taken down in a filthy back alley and left alone to bleed. He deserved better than that, he'd earned it. The coolness of his skin made her stomach clench up into uncomfortable knots and it felt like her own blood had turned into ice in her veins, thawing only a little when he stirred with feeble signs of life.
Or not so feeble. Despite his injuries Theo could talk and move, barely but that was still something. He was too strong to be claimed by the alley just yet. He needed help but Mali wasn't the one to help him. Emergencies out around the wizarding world was where Theo shined, not Mali. She needed a controlled environment. His finger against her temple was so deathly cold and she shook her head, shaking his hand away. "I can't. You know I can't." He saw her, didn't he? Theo had swooped in and saved the patients that she couldn't when she wouldn't listen to him about Medi-Wizardry. How she stubbornly insisted that she could and he'd told her she couldn't and she did it anyway and needed saving. He knew it, she knew it. The alley was quietly chaotic. The ground was rough under her knees, the sounds of rustling rubbish(rodents, probably) further down in the alley mixed with howling wind to make her jumpy. The darkness felt so ominous, whatever it hid within it's depth felt like it was staring back at her and waiting for the right moment to pounce. Her heart pounded in her ears, making it impossible to think.
"I'll go.. I'll go get someone. Tristan. I'll find him." The dying troll pushed her wand closer and Mali grabbed it and stood up, taking a step back away. Tristan, Eoin, Draco... Any of them were bound to be better than her, all she had to do was find them. Mali couldn't shake the feeling that if she left Theo it would be the last time she saw him alive. It kept her rooted to the spot, unable to twist around and disappear into the night. The last of his strength would bleed out and he would die alone on the cobblestone. She dissolved into tears at the very thought of it, taking to her knees again next to him. It wasn't fair, she healed Remus whenever he needed it but she couldn't help Theo. The spells were hiding from her memory, just out of reach. Remus had been on death's door a time or two and showed up, but it was in his home or hers. Meg too. It was a comfortable, controlled environment that she worked in. She knew where everything was, just had to follow protocol and in an hour they were on the mend. Theo.. Who knew if the person that attacked him was still around, watching?
"Please don't leave me." Mali half sobbed and half spoke as she crumbled under the pressure of it all. "Please. Please don't." Mali knew that if Theo had a choice, he wouldn't leave her alone, but he was critically injured. "I can't do it alone." Theo was always there for her, always. No matter what, that's why he was in the alley tonight. Theo needed her tonight and she knew both that she couldn't fix him and that she had to because Theo deserved more than this, more than her sobbing beside him as he perished in an alley.
After a deep breath Mali extinguished her wandlight with a command of "Nox." That plunged them into instant darkness and she gasped, squeezing the hand she had hold of. She hated the dark, especially when she couldn't see what was in it. Without her wandlight she couldn't even see the wounds to try and fix them but with the wandlight she couldn't use her wand to heal him. "I can do this.." she whispered to herself, searching her brain for a solution. "I can. I just need..." Mali untangled her fingers from Theo and patted him down, looking for his wand. "Your wand. Where is it?" She didn't expect much of an answer from him but talking helped distract herself from both the darkness and the sound of her own hyperventilation.
It took a precious moment but she found the instrument she was looking for. "Please, please work." Hoping the wand could sense her intention to help it's owner, Mali whispered the incantation and the tip of the wand brightened. To free up her hands she stuck it between her teeth but found the healing spells muffled against the wood. It was just another problem to work through and she stuck the wand behind her ear. It was a surprisingly good idea, working like a sort've weird head lamp. It provided her with just enough light to see what she what she was doing and freed up her hands to work with her own wand on the wounds.

Theo was only touching Mali with the very tip of one of his fingers, but when she shook his hand away, the loss of her warmth was significant - and devastating. Theo scrunched his face up in a frustrated frown, arm dropping back down to the rough cobblestones beneath him. "You have to." Theo's head hurt. All the pain radiating from different points of his body was confusing and irritating. He couldn't understand why Mali wouldn't help him. A vague and hazy vision of her kept popping up before his eyes, of Mali in a strange home sat crying and shaking over a strange man's body, but every time Theo got close to making sense of it sharp pangs cut across his chest and he lost his chain of thought.
He blinked - it took him a while - and when he opened his eyes, Mali wasn't there. She'd been replaced with a pair of legs. Theo looked up wildly when she stepped away, scrabbling his fingers across the cobblestones to paw at her shoe. "Don't leave me." She wouldn't fix him, and she wanted to leave? Theo didn't understand. With a frustrated, wet-sounding sigh he flipped his hand over so it was palm up and looked expectantly at Mali, like the action made perfect sense. He wanted her wand, so he could fix himself. Theo was nowhere near lucid enough to remember his own wand, right there in his pocket, much less any sort of spell that would stop his bleeding.
Luckily, Mali came back. She came back a sobbing, tearful mess and something clicked in Theo's brain when she fell to her knees. She did want to help him - but she didn't think she could. Theo would never stop blaming himself for putting those thoughts in her head in the first place, and the sudden and surprising kick of guilt he felt now strengthened him. Neither of them could do any of this alone. As much as he really needed her to stop his bleeding, he had to hold her together. Even now. That was part of the deal, that was how they worked. Theo ran a shaky hand over Mali's knee. "You can do it."
Mali extinguished them back into total darkness, and Theo back into total confusion. He didn't have the brain capacity to realize all the light was coming from her wand. He didn't question her, though, mostly because he was growing very tired after exerting himself so much in the past few minutes - but also because Mali was no longer wasting time. He could feel her hands, looking for...for...ah, yes, his wand. "Right pocket." It was the left, actually, but she found it soon enough. The light came back and Theo looked back up at Mali, hand still resting on her knee. He tried to smile encouragingly as he was quickly running out of manageable motivation tactics. "You can do it." He glanced down at the mess of his chest and then looked back up at her. He started to hum the spell for her, to help her, but he was quiet and his cadence was choppy from the effort.

Gods, Theo didn't understand. He was looking to her to fix him but Mali's mind had gone blank. The incantations sat on the very tip of her tongue and Mali knew that she knew them which made it all the more frustrating. It was a vicious cycle, the frustration clouded her brain and made it harder to think and recall the spells. Theo kept trying to push her into helping him because he just didn't understand that she felt like a first year armed with a wand and no idea how to use it. It was just a fancy, useless stick and she was a useless girl who didn't deserve the title of witch.
The solution seemed so obvious, she would find someone else to fix him. Mali was always looking to others to bail her out of trouble, usually it was Theo but now that Theo was the one in trouble. She knew so many talented healers, it was only a matter of finding them. Tristan would be the best choice but where to find the lighter troll? Remus was useful with healing spells. A light sensation at her shoe drew her attention down and she stepped back away from his hand, right out of his reach. "Please, I need to find someone else." the witch begged for his understanding as he pleaded not to be left behind. Somehow it didn't compute for Theo that she couldn't help him, he had so much trust and belief in her abilities despite how many times she illustrated the contrary. If he could have that much confidence in her then she had to do it.
It brought her back to him, that and the knowledge that he would likely die alone before she could return. Theo was growing frustrated and he wanted to heal himself, that ripped her in two. Theo had given up on her now, too. Useless. Mali felt so absolutely useless, she called herself a Healer, a specialist and the most important person in the world to her was about to bleed to death from the very thing that she was supposed to specialize in. Spell damage. This was spell damage and she couldn't bloody fix it. Theo's hand on her knee startled her but it meant a very important thing, that he hadn't given up on her. He still believed that she could fix him and that meant that she had to. Mali couldn't let Theo down because he would never let her down.
Mali got to work, blindly searching for his wand. "You're trying to trick me." she scolded lightly when his right pocket was empty. "It's in your left, silly troll." If she could keep chattering and searching and working then she could piece Theo back together. The wand light only barely illuminated his face and chest. Mali tore the tattered remnants of his shirt away to expose the wounds, allowing her a better look. Squinting against the darkness, the witch traced along one of the slash marks with her fingers, trying to memorize the edges and borders of his torn flesh so she could knit the wound together in the dim lighting. The spell still felt like it was hiding from her but Theo's hiding caught it and dragged it back. The rhythm wasn't perfect but it was enough. She paused and listened to it 'til she could join in and keep the beat of the melodic spell with him.
She felt along the wound again, this time she followed her fingers with the tip of her wand, reciting the sing song incantation. Mali's voice cracked and trembled with the effort, but Theo's hand on her knee and help with the spell grounded her and allowed her to work. The blood slowed and the jagged edges began to pull together and the skin began to knit. "D'you remember the first time we were in this alley?" she asked between spells as she wiped away the blood, talking again to keep her anxiety about the darkness at bay. "That's when I fell in love with you." It was impossible to shake the creeping feeling that the shadows had eyes and ill intentions but talking to Theo, dragging up a surprisingly good memory. When Mali was satisfied that the first gash was healed enough, she moved on to the next one and repeated the process. The witch felt along the wound and then traced it with the tip of her wand, chanting the incantation. "I was too stubborn to realize it, though. Not just because you saved me, either." Like she was saving Theo. Mali readjusted the wand behind her ear and bent over Theo. Her face was lined with concentration as she worked. "I fell in love with your gentleness. You'd never think a troll could be gentle, would you? But you defy logic in the best ways."

Mali kept getting away from him, talking about someone else. Theo rolled his head slowly back and forth across the cobblestones. He didn't want anyone else. He knew she could fix him, he knew it. And if it was too late...there was not one other person in the world he would want here more than her. He really, really wished he could say all of these things out loud, but he just didn't have the breath for it. He had to make do with shaking his head and pawing at her and somehow, miraculously, it worked. She came back. Theo tried very hard not to sink into the relief that gave him, because that place felt a little too comfortable, like a place he might not be able to climb back out of.
There was a brief darkness, and Theo felt a thrill of panic up his spine, thinking he might have already slipped into that place. He could still feel Mali, though, could still hear her. "Troll," he repeated, smiling dazedly up at her when the light came back on. Theo wasn't all the way cognizant anymore, but that word - that was their word. It was a transition word. In the dark emptiness of his current thoughts, he could see it zipping between moments, heavy and light, angry and sweet. Life and death.
Mali was calmer, and ready to work. Theo did what he could to help her. The knitting of his flesh was incredibly painful, but he didn't even have it in him to scream. Tears sprang up in his eyes, but he never stopped looking at Mali. She was a good distraction - and when she started talking, even better. Theo chanced a glance around the dark alley when she mentioned it. He could still feel traces of nostalgia inside him, but right now he couldn't remember what they were for. When had they been here before? Why?
It had something to do with love, apparently. Theo looked back at Mali at the word, his will to stay attached to the earth rather than float away building up brick by brick, stitch by stitch. He managed another watery smile, listening to Mali's story. That's right...they had been here before. Theo was having a hard time picturing the actual scene of it, but he remembered the dread of finding Mali much like he looked now. Even then, it hurt him in a way he didn't really understand at the time to see her like that. She had loved him in that moment and Theo only needed the slightest bit of consciousness to realize that he had loved her then, too.
Of course, with Mali's handiwork, Theo had quite a bit more than just slight consciousness now. He had lost a lot of blood and he was weak from it, but Mali was quickly making sure he didn't lose anymore. He felt he could relax without slipping now. He could think. And he could feel. The pain was hot across his chest, no longer as easily distracted by just a face or a voice. Theo let his mind wander and filled in his distraction a bit, substantiated it with memories of Mali. "Spiders," he said after a quiet minute. "You protected me from the spiders. That's why I love you." His tired smile was something akin to a grin when he said it.

It was only one word, one silly word, but it meant everything to Mali. It meant that Theo was holding on and he was still with her, that she wouldn't have to fumble around in the darkness alone as she tried to piece the troll back together. "That's right." Mali agreed quietly. "You're my favorite Troll." Who ever thought she would fall in love with a troll? Or that a word that she once threw as an insult would be so dear to her? The name was something precious between them, it spoke of what bonded them but made it light and playful. When they had light again Theo was smiling. It was a hazy smile, muddled by his weakened state but it still looked handsome against his paling skin, bathed in a dim wandlight. Mali would go to the ends of the earth for that smile and farther to restore it's brightness and vitality.
The Healer worked diligently, feeling her way around Theo's chest, half blinded by darkness, and tending to each the best she could. Concentration lined her face and she bit down hard on her lower lip between incantations, using the bite of pain to keep her grounded. Neither one of them could afford to have her go spinning off into a storm of anxiety and fear. She had been afraid of the dark for as long as she could remember but in the past year that feeling had intensified to a full on panic over darkness. She persisted, and chatted to take her mind off the howling wind or sinister shuffling and rustling of rats and rubbish in the alley. Mali chanced a look at Theo's face as she told him about how she fell in love with him and her heart dropped into her stomach. Pain was clearly visible on his shadowed features and it made her chest ache with sympathy and a desire to take the pain away.
Mali set down her wand to give Theo a little break from the pain, just a moment or two, and ran her fingers over his cheek. "You're remembering it wrong. You sacrificed me to the spiders." A troll to be afraid of something so small (though creepy.). "I had no choice but to protect you, then. I'd do it again, though." Mali soon returned to her work, magicking the wounds away 'til Theo was left with angry raised lines decorating his chest. The witch ran her fingers over the last of the healed wounds, they would still require attention later but Theo wasn't going to bleed to death, it was satisfactory for now. She sat back on her knees in awe of what had just happened. "I did it..." Mali, despite her lack of confidence, had pieced Theo back together. "I did it. Okay, now what?" She had to coach herself through the rest, there was no time to gloat. Who knew where whoever had hurt Theo had gone off too, or if they would be back. "We have to get out of here. I'm going to take you to... to.. somewhere." St. Mungo's didn't seem like a great idea, the last thing Theo needed was to show up with marks of dark magic. "Home. Can you stand?"

Theo was no ordinary troll - he was Mali's favorite troll. That made him, like, King of the Trolls he was pretty sure. He felt like it at any rate. The troll part definitely - he was feeling mighty slow and sluggish at the moment, Mali's insult turned term of endearment finally ringing true. The king part too, though, he could feel that. Through the tangled web of pain and weakness and confusion Theo rested upon something solid and unyielding - Mali's love for him and that that meant he was safe. He knew she could do it, save him, she could do anything because he was her favorite troll and she would do anything for him.
Other such half-formed, rambling thoughts kept Theo occupied in an active sense of peace, not restful like the one that threatened to drag him down into the darkness, but a comforting one all the same. Thinking about Mali, and how she was staying, how she was fixing him despite her doubts. It have Theo a lot to think about, especially as his mental capacities slowly came back to him, the boil of panic and blood loss simmering down as Mali worked - and talked to him. Theo added 'Genius Healer' to the list of things he was going to thank her for later, when he had a little more blood back in his system. Mali's conversation furthered Theo's sense of peace and calm, especially as she sent him backwards through time, remembering all the bits that made Mali into his favorite person on Earth. Such memories had the ability to mask his pain considerably.
Still, it was nice of Mali to give him a break. Retreating from numbness and cold, her warm fingers on his cheek felt absolutely wonderful. Theo took the opportunity to take in his first full lungful of air in a good long while, too, and though it was painful it was terribly refreshing. He glanced up at Mali, smile gaining strength. "Did I?" He made a noise in his throat that might have been a laugh. "See. That's why I love you. Never afraid, when it matters." There, that was a little more coherent than just mumbling about spiders at her. Satisfied with his line, Theo braced himself for Mali to get back to work, and soon enough his blood was left to congeal on the cobblestones with nothing fresh to add to the sizable pool of it. Mali, for one, seemed absolutely shocked. "Of course you did," he said simply, watching her. He never had any doubt that she could do it, not even when he was half-dead and out of his mind. He nodded as she formulated her next plan, still more than happy to have Mali take charge of him and his livelihood. Her question prompted him to try to stand up and...well, Theo wouldn't be in charge of much of anything for quite a bit yet. He managed to get up into a kneeling position, but not without a lot of groaning and cursing. "I don't think for very long." He pushed again, using the wall behind him to basically climb the bricks up to his feet, and he rested heavily against it as he looked at Mali and held out a hand, breathing hard and paling again.
