It felt like only minutes ago that Mali was bent over the cauldron in the small living space of her flat, tipping a vial into a new potion. The instant the liquids mixed there was a very loud sound, a sensation that she was flying and then everything went dark and stayed that way. It felt like it had only been minutes but in truth it was several hours later when a sharp pain began pulsing through her right arm. The razor edge cut through the dreamless state and dragged her into consciousness. The ambient light felt glaringly bright and Mali blinked against it several times before she could fully open her eyes. There were several new sensations, something stung and itched on her face and arms and everything ached like the time she'd fallen off a broomstick in her third year.
Moving sharpened the dull ache and Mali winced and whimpered as she hauled herself into a sitting position. The pain helped clear out the foggy haze in her head so she could puzzle out where she was. She was in a bed, the room smelled faintly of anti-septic and a bottle of skele-gro explained the feeling of tiny knives cutting through her muscle around her bones. She was in the hospital. A wizarding hospital. St. Mungo's. The realization hit her hard and sucked all the air out of her lungs. Mali was in St. Mungo's, a place she avoided like the plague over the past several months. What's worse is she was injured in St. Mungo's, impaired and vulnerable if the place were to come under attack. That was a real possibility, right? They'd been posting Aurors there lately, the Ministry must've been afraid of something happening.
Mali's heart pounded in her chest so hard that she could hear it in her ears. Her breathing was rapid and shallow and panic was crawling up her spine. The witch patted down her front with her less damaged left arm in search of her wand but found nothing but the hospital gown. The panic intensified 'til Mali spotted her wand on the far counter after a wild look around the room. As a Healer she knew better than to get up but as someone who was traumatized by the events nearly a year ago she understood the importance of being armed, so Mali eased her bruised and battered frame over to the edge of the bed. Her feet gingerly touched the floor and her head felt airy and light. The witch sat there for a long moment, letting the spinning settle and working up her nerve to make a break for her wand.
Something about the bed felt safer than the several feet of space between her and the wooden instrument. It was silly but her head was pounding and her heart was palpitating and Mali couldn't think very clearly. The lightheadedness dissipated and Mali pushed on to her feet. Her ankle seemed to fold underneath her weight and the witch collapsed to the ground with a cry that turned into a shriek as she landed hard on her right arm. The door opened just as Mali managed to get herself sitting up against the wall.
"Theo!" Mali cried as the large, dark troll lumbered through the door way. She winced as she spoke and pressed a hand against her ribs to soothe the discomfort underneath them. Mali was a pitiful sight, eyes wide with panic as she cowered against the wall. Her face was covered in minor cuts and bruises, there were burns on her arms that were already healing and tiny shards of glass were still tangled up in her hair. "Theo, I need my wand. Please, bring me my wand.." The two of them hadn't spoken since they argued over Meg's face and it was terrible that her first word to him in days was a plea for help, but she felt too vulnerable without it. A Death Eater could come charging through the door any moment to curse them all and she would be defenseless, dependent on him for protection as always. "Please, Theo." If she could only get the wand then Mali thought she could calm down. She needed that flimsy sense of security.

Theo could actually feel the exhaustion seeping through his veins as he stretched out on a couch in the break room - a slow, pulsing lull that pushed him into the cushions. He'd pushed his body further than it could go today - but his mind, his mind was still racing. Even as he tried shutting his eyes, just for a few minutes, he knew there was no hope in shutting his brain off right now. He was still in full emergency mode even though the worst of it had happened hours ago.
It was almost the end of his normal shift when they got the call, some residential potion explosion. But no, not just some random residence...by the time the address clicked in Theo's brain, he'd almost let another couple of Medi-Wizards take the call, maybe get off a little bit early. But then he recognized the address as Mali's and he yanked the Medi-Wizards back into being by their robes before they could Disapparate (thankfully not causing any splinching, but maybe a couple of bruised tailbones). Despite the way his gut turned to frozen lead at the thought of what he might find at Mali's apartment, he would be damned if he was going to let anybody else but him find it.
He brought his partner for the day, of course, not completely abandoning protocol (he acted just a little bit safer these days when it came to his job). The man Apparated a few moments after him, sensibly bringing along the supply bag Theo forgot. Mali had medical supplies in her apartment...but who knew what would be left of the place?
The building was thankfully still in one piece...Mali was, too, but some of her pieces were sticking out at the wrong angles. And she was unconscious, burned, and bleeding. Theo cleaned her up and applied first aid as best he could, his mind slipping into that aloof state that allowed him to be so good at his job. He wouldn't be able to bear this otherwise. He didn't need to think about how the last thing he'd said to Mali had been very far from I love you, or how her most recent memories of him were bitter and unhappy.
He didn't think about it, not at Mali's house or once they got her to the hospital. He didn't think about it as he hovered in her room, being chased out over and over again by the Healers because he was much too big to hover. He ran all over the hospital for them, not thinking. Eventually they told him to go home, his shift had ended hours ago. Instead, Theo went to the break room to not think and to wait for Mali to wake up. While his face might not be friendly to her right now, if he knew the woman at all, she would need a familiar face when she realized where exactly she was waking up.
Theo's rest lasted all of five minutes. Then he hauled himself off the couch and wandered back up to Mali's room, arriving at her door just in time to hear her scream - in pain or in terror, he wasn't sure. He shouldered through the door and found Mali on the floor, cowering by the wall. The sight of it sent poisonous shards cutting through his chest cavity, making him choke back a desperate sound. Gone was the aloofness, the not thinking. They were no longer Medi-Wizard and patient, but Theo and Mali. And Theo couldn't stand to see Mali like this, to ever let her feel like this again. No matter what else they had, they would always have their shared, torturous past and the sometimes suffocating realization that no one else would ever understand.
Theo nodded hastily at Mali's pleading, searching the room for Mali's wand. He spotted it on the counter and retrieved in a few long steps, turning on his heel to crouch down beside Mali and put it in her hand. "There. Hold onto it, okay?" Her Healers would probably not be happy with their armed patient, but Theo understood that having that sense of security and wholeness from her wand was as good for her health as any potion or spell. He blinked at Mali, looking at her for a thoughtful moment, and then held his arms out on either side of her, not yet touching her. "I don't remember putting you down here. Can I put you back in your bed?"

St. Mungo's struck a deep fear into Mali's heart in a way that no other thing could. Not lone death eaters, werewolves or even Dementors. St. Mungo's was the terrible place it all started, one that she trudged through for months after the attack 'til she broke and couldn't take it anymore. It held twisted memories and dark possibilities. There had been no warning before the first attack, no hint or signal of what was to come making it impossible to feel safe within the hospital's haunted walls.
Theo came to her rescue, handing over her wand and chasing away some of her vulnerability. Mali took the wand in the wrong hand, gripping the handle like a lifeline and turning her knuckles white around the wood. It felt unwieldy in her left hand but her entire right arm was useless with half grown and shattered bones. The tension in the witches muscles relaxed under the weight of the wand in her hand and Mali blinked unshed tears out of her eyes while murmuring a "Thank you." All of it was silly, really. Mali was the first one to tell you that she was bad with defensive spells and even worse at martial magic but Theo had brought her a sense of security, partly because of the wand and partly because he was there. The wand meant she had a chance, however small that chance might be.
There was no point in asking what happened, Mali was smart enough to piece that together from her last conscious memory and an inventory of her injuries. Her ankle was likely broken, the bones in her right arm were being regrown. Everything ached.. some spots more than others, and there were healing cuts and burns. She looked up at Theo as he spoke, explaining "I fell." He didn't put her down on the floor, she managed to throw herself down there in the panic. Honestly hiding under the bed 'til she could go home was a more appealing option than being put back into it but Mali reluctantly nodded. She looped her good arm around Theo's neck, her wand still in a death grip. It was a funny little manifestation of their relationship, Mali was always leaning on Theo for emotional support and now she was physically leaning on him for support as she stood on one stiff but wobbly leg.
Back in bed, Mali had to make a choice. The safety and security of the wand or Theo. Her right arm throbbed sharply and the fingers didn't work quite the way they should but her wand occupied her 'good hand'. Without a thought she set the wand down on the mattress, right next to her. With her left hand free she the sleeve of Theo's robe. "Please don't leave." It didn't matter how rocky they were, Theo and Mali had to face things together. He was the one who held her together and she was the one who led them through whatever problem they had to face. Mali felt complete when he was near. She felt safe. "You don't have to talk, just don't leave me here alone."

Theo only nodded at Mali's thanks, watching her closely. Taking in how much pain she was in, physically and emotionally. She looked like she might cry and that stilled Theo completely, didn't let him move an inch away from her. No matter if he was causing some of that pain by being there, he couldn't stand to see Mali like this. And if he couldn't comfort her the way he wanted to, he had to do something for her. Anything at all. He gave her her wand and tried to get her back in bed. "I see," he said, smiling just a little bit when she explained why she was on the floor. He chewed at the inside of his lip for a moment before asking, "Nightmare?"
Mali held on to him while he helped her back to her bed and Theo had to use everything in him not to just scoop her up in his arms. He had to let her do some of it herself - mostly just because that's who Mali was, but also because holding her in his arms felt just a little inappropriate at the moment. She hadn't chased him out of the room yet but Theo's doubts and insecurities were growing stronger by the second. How much longer would she let him stay? He'd gotten what he needed, to see that she was awake - but immediately he knew he needed more. He needed Mali, all of her. He needed her back. He sure picked a hell of a time to feel all that.
Mali got settled back in the bed and Theo lingered for as long as it felt natural. Just checking on his patient, making sure she was comfortable. He waited for her to say something. It wouldn't be fair of him, right now, to pile all his emotional burdens on her. But maybe she would say something. Theo moved to pat her hand, to reassure her and leave, but then Mali was grabbing onto his sleeve and he lurched forward as if she'd used all her strength to pull him to the edge of the bed. He locked his gaze on her as her request washed over him. He began to nod, shifting his hand into hers so he could squeeze it before perching on the very edge of the bed. "Of course not." His gaze fell away from her face for a moment, taking in her injuries. He started chewing on his lip again. After a quiet pause, he looked back up at her. "Do...you want to talk?"

Mali often looked like she might cry. She was a physically weak and emotional bean and being on the brink of tears was a very familiar place to her. She knew how to navigate that place and was an expert at keeping the tears at bay. She managed to do it now, but it got harder with the small upturn of Theo's lips. It made her realize how desperately she missed that smile and the gentleness behind it. Most wouldn't think Theo to be a gentle being, but he had his tender little moments of caring that melted her heart and made her fall just a little bit more in love with him every single time.
Mali shook her head and instantly regretted it. The motion caused sharp little splinters of pain inside of her skull that rode a wave of nausea. The witch squeezed her eyes shut while waiting for the sick feeling to pass. She answered him with brutal, unashamed honesty, telling the Medi-Wizard " I just realized where I was. This whole place is a nightmare." After what they'd been through she was sure he would understand, it was enough to make anyone try to flee on a healing ankle. How stupid she was to end up in the hospital, knowing what could happen there. She should have been more careful, more cautious.
Once Mali was safely in bed and armed with a near useless wand there was no reason for Theo to stay, but she was desperate to keep him there. Not only because she didn't want to be alone but because this was the closest thing to 'normal' that they'd had in weeks. There was no animosity, no anger or hurt feelings brewing between them. It felt like all of it had been set aside and all it took was a little explosion. Her skin felt electrified wherever he touched, a nice change from the deep, persistent ache. Theo fell forward from her hold on his arm, like he was equally desperate not to leave and then he was holding her hand. Just to squeeze it, a little action that was more comforting than words could ever be.
Theo sat on the edge and Mali gingerly and slowly scooted over to give him more room to sit with her. He didn't belong on the edge, he wasn't some acquaintance who was visiting out of a mix of social obligation and morbid curiosity, he was the most precious person in the world to her that was there for her because he had been afraid and because she was afraid now. "No." Mali admitted quietly, clutching her wand again. Words could only ruin the unspoken truce. Mali let silence sit between them for a few minutes. Theo helped quiet down the voice of panic but it was still persistently whispering in her ear. She piped up finally when the feeling of dread that was crawling up her spine was too much to ignore. "Can you take me home?" Or anywhere, really, as long as it wasn't St. Mungo's. "I'm a Healer." Granted, one that couldn't currently hold her wand in her right hand but she was thinking irrationally so it felt like a minor detail. "I don't need to be here. I don't want to be here. Please?" The pleading in her voice was raw and edged with a wretchedly genuine fear

"You got that right," Theo sighed before helping Mali to the bed. This place was a nightmare. The kind of nightmare where you had to pick people you loved up off the floor and watch them fall apart, over and over again. Theo wanted to wake up. Now that Mali was awake, he knew that was what he wanted. He wanted to wake up and fix what he had broken.
And Mali didn't push him away. That was good, so good that Theo felt like shouting. He settled for smiling instead, scooting so at least half of him was on the bed when Mali made room for him. She didn't want to talk, she said, but she did make room for him. That was okay with Theo. He wasn't very good at talking, anyway, but he did take up a lot of room and if Mali only wanted his presence right now -well, he had a lot of it. He sat next to her and stared off somewhere in the vicinity of her shins.
The silence didn't last as long as one would expect with someone who didn't want to talk - but it lasted exactly long enough for what Theo expected of Mali (not really the silent type, her). He would have laughed if her request hadn't been so heartbreaking. She'd only just gotten here, but she was so desperate to leave. Theo didn't blame her. "Yeah," he said without a second thought, meeting her eyes. "Maybe rest just a little while longer? So you can walk a little better?" He glanced at the door and thought for a long moment. "Bah, I don't think I'll even bother to ask. You are a Healer, after all." He looked back at Mali. "And you've got me."

Mali didn't push Theo away, but Theo didn't try to leave either. He stayed, and it was the closest they've been in weeks. It was almost disorienting, to feel so absolutely miserable and absolutely happy at the same time. She made space for him and he took up that space and it felt absolutely wonderful and warm to be so close to him again, physically and emotionally. Tempers weren't clashing, they just sat in silence for a short moment. Theo's warmth (Merlin, it felt good.) wasn't quite enough to erase the terrible place she was trapped in. Even with Theo here, Mali couldn't stay. St. Mungo's held too many terrible memories and danger felt like it was lurking out in the corridors, just waiting for the right moment to waltz in.
Mali was almost certain Theo would say no when she piped up mere minutes after telling him she didn't want to talk but Theo understood. He knew why the hospital was unbearable, he could feel it too. Theo had beautiful eyes and she'd almost forgotten just how lovely they were 'til she was staring wordlessly back at them while he bargained a little more time, some rest. "Okay." the witch agreed with a single nod, attention turning to her injured ankle. "For a little while." It felt throbby and tingly as the Skele-Gro worked to mend the fractured bones in her ankle. She rolled her ankle to test it out, wincing when the movement sent a sharp pain through her foot.
Theo wasn't going to ask, because she had him. Mali had Theo. She always had, even when they were fighting and no matter what problem cropped up between them. Emboldened by this, Mali managed to set the wand down. There was no need for the wand anymore, because she had Theo. "You're better than any Healer they've got here." Mali scooted closer to Theo, because things were going too good and she wanted to be closer. Close enough that she leaned against and practically melted into Theo, comforted by the familiar and solid feeling of her beautiful man troll.
She felt braver still, burying her face in Theo's shoulder, murmuring "I miss you." into his shirt. It was a risk, but Mali didn't care. She did miss him, missed his scent and his voice and his eyes. There was too much unresolved, and the witch knew she was going to ruin everything by talking but she couldn't help it. The question came up and it had to be asked, she had to know. "Why did you go back to sleep that morning?"

Mali surprisingly agreed without much of a fight at all, which just served to hurt Theo's heart further. He was in no place to tell her what to do or make her stay somewhere she didn't want to be - but he couldn't help but feel she was doing it, at least a little bit, for him. Compromising with him even if she looked ready to crawl out of her skin to get out of this place. Theo was her ticket out of here if she wanted to leave sooner rather than later, and he could practically feel the effort she was putting into accepting that.
He was feeling something else, too. Mali wasn't just using him to get out of the hospital, even a troll could see that. They were inching closer together by the second, as if they literally could not stay away from each other, like magnets. Theo supposed that made a lot of sense - opposites attract, and all. He and Mali had a lot in common, but they also had some pretty significant differences. Parts of themselves that they fulfilled in the other. That was just undeniable - just as it was really, really hard to deny that they were practically made for each other. Being this close again, after so long, made it really hard to forget that.
"Well yeah, but only because you left," Theo responded, the hint of a grin on his face. He was growing positively lightheaded with the closeness, and when Mali leaned into him, his arm automatically scooped around her back. He was gentle, because of her injuries, but even this little touch was better than anything he had felt in weeks. It made him feel brave. He placed the lightest of kisses on the top of Mali's head when it presented itself to him, a natural and instinctive response. An unspoken response, too, of how badly he missed her. It was all hitting him now in surges and waves, the terrible mistakes he'd made over these past weeks - all summed up in Mali's one simple question.
"I don't know," he said, but he shook his head right after he said it. That wasn't right - he did know, he just didn't know how to say it. That was the whole issue here, the issue of Theo's life - lacking the words to explain just what it was he felt inside. Sometimes he wished he could just rip his head open so people could see what a mes it was up there. "You scare me, Mali." He kissed the top of her head again. "In the best way possible. Knowing how much I need you scares me. Knowing how easily I could lose you scares me. That morning, at least, it was almost like this weird in-between thing we were in was almost preferable, just because that didn't terrify the absolute living shit out of me." He paused, that faintest of grins reappearing again. Language. "Sorry. Does that make any sense? I'm not trying to make any excuses, and now I see how bloody stupid I was - for what it's worth."

Theo and Mali were a whirlwind. They could fall apart in a matter of seconds, banish each other out of their lives but just give them a reason, and they were just like they were before. It was a maddening ride, up and down and up and down but Theo was worth every dip and rise. There was no one she would rather be on the emotional roller coaster with. Once Theo lumbered into her life, tall and sassy, he stole her heart and would forever hold the key. He even managed to put the start of a grin on her own face, something she thought impossible given where she was.
"That's not true." The witch said lightly, being drawn to Theo more that ever. "You've always been better than me. You're so good with people." It wasn't a self depreciating statement at all. Mali knew she was good, but Theo had an unexpected way with people. He was large and intimidating to the point that one wouldn't think that he could put someone's mind at ease. It was why he was better. Mali just looked like someone who'd want to make you feel better, no surprises there.
Theo's little moments of affection, from his arm around her to his kiss, almost made it possible to forget just where she was. It gave her a warm, pleasant feeling to chase away the cold hollowness that had been festering under her ribs since that morning that Theo went back to sleep. St. Mungo's only intensified that feeling, adding a hard edge of fear. Theo was there to erase it all with his lips against the top of her head. All the good feelings faltered when Theo said he didn't know. This was only a momentary escape. They fell right back to where they were before, damn that whirlwind. Theo wasn't going to talk to her, just shut her out.
Mali had begun to pull away when Theo spoke again, freezing her in her place. Then he had that darn sweet kiss, melting her right back down to where she had settled against him. This was what she had wanted, to talk to Theo and to know what he was thinking and he was giving it to her. She gingerly slipped her own arm around Theo, needing to be closer. The witch didn't speak or try to cut him off, just listen and nodding when he worried about making sense. Her own words felt important now, she had to pick the right ones. Say the wrong thing and they would plunge right back down to where they were before. "But.." she started, tilting her head up to look at Theo. "Isn't being scared better than being lonely? We can work through being scared together. I get scared too, because I need you just as much. Probably more, you're always taking care of me when I can't take care of myself." Like now, when Mali'd managed to provoke a very sensitive potion into exploding. She looked down at her ankle again. "I fell and you picked me up. You always do that. That morning made me afraid that you weren't going to be around to do that."
