Who's bright idea was camping? It could have been Theo's, thanks to his love of the outdoors but then again it could have been hers too. Mali was always game for a big adventure, even if it wasn't completely well thought out. She didn't know the first thing about camping, having never been herself. Her family holidays were always spent comfortably in a hotel. The witch made a valiant effort to learn, outfitted in jeans, hiking boots, pink plaid and a backpack nearly as big as she was. It made her feel outdoorsy and rugged. The camping paraphenelia clanked together as she soldiered along the dirt path through the wilderness. There was an enthusiastic bounce in her step for about the first hour 'til they found a spot by the lake to set up their tent, where the would be able to see the stars at night.
Then came the hard part. There was no more leisurely walk through the woods, the tent had to be set up with no magic. It wasn't pretty and during the whole process Mali realized just how hot and sticky it was out there under the sun and how many little bugs there were zipping around. By the time they managed to get the tent up the whole thing was lopsided and Mali tugged her wand out when Theo wasn't looking and magically coaxed it to stand up straight.
Once the camp was set and their sleeping bags were rolled out, the pair of them were going to catch their dinner but she was rather skeptical about the whole process. Mali sat in the grass, eyeing the a hook in one hand and wriggling bait in the other. "Doesn't this hurt the worms?" Mali asked, voice thick with sincere concern. "Maybe we could use something else, like bread. I feed the fish in the park bits of bread sometimes. Ducks too." Mali slapped at a mosquito, looking just a little bit more sweaty and miserable. With a huff she ran her hand through her long dark hair that was already damp with sweat. "I can't do this, not with Flounder and Nemo at home." She dug through the dirt a little and buried the worm in the dirt, setting it free. "We can eat marshmallows for dinner, I brought two whole bags. We'll need a fire first though, won't we? To make s'mores. I've never actually had a s'more, can you believe it? I dunno if you knew, but I'd never been camping before."
Mali stretched and used it as a cover to lean up against Theo and snake an arm around him while laying her head on his shoulder. "I'm glad to be here with you, though. Want to go swimming? Oh, don't move, there's a little spider on your shirt."

This was exactly what they needed! The great outdoors! No one could possibly be unhappy in the great wide unknown - so what better place to push two people back together who were in desperate need of some happiness? Theo and Mali were officially back together and slowly climbing their way back up to the comfortable contentment they once shared. And lucky for Theo, most of that climb seemed to be taking place over outdoor activities, his most favorite activities there were.
He trailed Mali through the woods all day, enjoying watching her commitment to the cause just as much as he enjoyed observing the nature all around them. He was similarly decked out in plaid (not pink) and enough gear to house a troll. Ashlands skimped on magic on the strangest things, and camping was one of them. Theo didn't like to use magic when he was camping unless he absolutely had to - never did magic feel like more of a cheat than when he was perfectly capable of doing everything with his own two hands. When he was home, it was different, because creature comforts like plumbing and modern housing were already cheating so why not add a little magic on top. But out in the woods, it was just him and whatever he could carry on his back - and tonight, also on Mali's back.
The tent went up with a bit of a struggle, but Theo was grinning the whole time. The struggle was the fun part! Mali looked a little ruffled once they were done, but she also looked a little sweaty so he put it down to just being the heat. Once the sun went down, that wouldn't be a problem. At the edge of the lake, there was even a nice little breeze as they set up their fishing poles. Theo had his baited and ready to cast when Mali voiced her concerns about worm feelings. Theo bit his bottom lip to stop himself from laughing - he really should not have been surprised this wasn't going to jive with the little animal lover. "It's the circle of life," he tried, side eyeing her. "Worm feeds fish, fish feeds us. Just like Mother Nature wanted it." Mali buried her bait and Theo resigned, putting his pole down next to him. He wasn't going to sit there and traumatize her any further, even though the little fella at the end of his hook was very much dead already...Theo rolled his pole further into the grass behind him.
"Really? You seem like a seasoned veteran," Theo said, plucking at her pink plaid before putting an arm around her. "Marshmallows sound perfect. And it won't take us long at all to build a fire. It's easy." Fire was usually where Theo gave in to a little bit of magic...but Mali didn't need to know that until they'd at least tried on their own. "I'm happy you're here, too. This place is beautiful." Theo looked out over the lake, contemplating if the water was as cold as it looked - when Mali sent him rolling away and onto his knees in a tangle of flashing arms and legs. Spider! Spider!!! When he settled, his shirt was half off and his hair sticking up at an odd angle. "Did I get it?" He looked at her.

Although the outdoorsy activies were Theo's most favorite, they definitely weren't Mali's. She did like to be outside. For a little while... When you could go back inside when it got too hot. Or if there was ice cream nearby to cool off with. Maybe lemonade. Her idea of a good time wasn't necessarily trekking into the wilderness (as much of the wilderness as you could get on the outskirts of a village.) with an unspoken rule of no magic and no ice cream. She kept a good attitude about it, though. Theo looked so pleased with their activity that it would be a tragedy not to at least try and enjoy it along with him. It was just so hot and so sticky that the corners of her smile were straining.
She of course led the way, like always. Despite Theo's longer legs she had a habit of walking faster and could usually be found bouncing along a step or six ahead of him. She wasn't too concerned with maps or remembering how they got there because well.. magic. If they got lost they could just magic themselves back home, where there was ice cream. The hike into the forest was the easy part and even that left her feeling a little disenchanted with the camping, but she soldiered on right through the tent set up. This was too much bloody work, honestly. And what was their reward at the end of it all? They got to sleep on the ground, in bags. Not even the same bag.
They spent a little time by the edge of the lake when they had their bag tent set up. That was nice, the breeze made her feel a little less miserable and inwardly sour about the bloody terrible idea that was camping. "That's not the circle of life." She protested with a shake of her head. "You've obviously never seen The Lion King." It wasn't that Mali was against meat, either. Or fishing. She was quite fond of fish and chips, actually. Chips! There were no chips here. Or crisps. It was hard for her to articulate her objection to the activity but she covered the worm and let it wriggle off into the earth and away from the hungry fish mouths. "I can't eat something when it has the chance to look me in the face and know that I'm the reason it's dying." Theo was lucky she was quitting now, she would be inconsolable if she had to watch a fish flop through it's last few moments of life. Don't even mention the hooks.
Mali gave an indignant "Hey!" as she playfully swatted his hand away from her shirt. "I like pink." The witch settled in against Theo and under his arm, very content with this part of camping. "Right, just a little incendio charm..." Because how they made fires in the movies looked like another thing that was too much work. Sticks and striking rocks together or something. Or matches, but Mali didn't even own matches, being a witch and all. One moment they were talking about how happy they were and the next Theo was gone and Mali flopped over. Her big brave troll was rolling around in the grass to get away from a teeny little thing that might not have even been a spider. It could've been a piece of moss. Mali rolled around too, but it was because she was holding her stomach and barking with laughter.
She had just managed to regain some composure when Theo popped back up, looking all askew and disheveled. So much drama over a little spider. She pressed her lips together to quiet another laugh that was bubbling up. Mali scooted back over to Theo and took the hem of his shirt before shaking her head. "Don't think so. You probably need to take this off. Just in case." Also because shirtless trolls were her favorite kind of shirtless beings. With a single snicker, she couldn't help it, he looked so frightened and cute at the same time, she unbuttoned the shirt the rest of the way and coaxed it off. "There, no more spider." Mali grinned and ran her hand through his hair, smoothing it down and enjoying the feeling of his short black strands between her fingers.
Short hair must be nice. Her own was long and thick and it felt like there was far too much, too stifling out where air conditioning was only a dream. She shook out her own dark hair that was damp and heavy with sweat. It was frustratingly hot and she had half a mind to lop all her hair off as soon as they got home (not really, but gods, wouldn't it be cooler?). "So...Swimming? Or.." Mali set to work pulling off her hiking boots and her socks and good Merlin her feet already felt ten times better but she scooted down to the very very edhe of the lake to dip her blue painted toes into the water. "We could just sit here for awhile?"

"Can't say I have. Can we watch that when we get back?" Theo was a big fan of lions, enough to get him thinking of watching movies in the middle of this awesome camping trip. He had to both bite his bottom lip and hold himself very still while Mali freed her worm. "I don't think worms even have eyes," he muttered, but it was halfhearted at best. Mali was cute when she was compassionate.
"Me too," he plucked at Mali's other shirt sleeve as she settled under his arm. He gave her a squeeze when she took the easiness of fire-building quite literally. "No, ma'am," he laughed. "Flint. Sparks. Kindling. I promise it's easy." It really wasn't that easy - but camping wasn't fun if it wasn't hard.
Spiders, though - spiders were NOT fun. Ever. Theo fought valiantly against the beast, only to (maybe) vanquish it to the sound of Mali's roaring laughter. He tried to give her his most indignant look, but Mali's laughter was the most contagious thing in the world. He knew he was silly - but seriously, fuck spiders. Only one thing could make him forget all about spiders, and that was Mali and her laughter and her closeness. He made no protest as he lost his shirt - the forest felt much cooler this way. "You saved me," he grinned, leaning in to the pleasing touch of Mali's hand in his hair. He worked at his own shoes as she took off hers, watching her scoot down to the edge of the lake. Theo considered the image for a moment, the tranquility of it - before jumping up and kicking off his trousers as he ran splashing into the lake.
Merlin, it was cold. Theo yelped before diving under the water, just to get it over with. He popped back up and spun around to grin at Mali, beckoning her in. "Come in! It feels good. Cold, but good."
