Ever since she'd spoken to that Obliviator in St. Mungo's, Addy had been obsessed. Wanting to fill the hole in her chest with something, she'd seized on the idea that there might be more to her father's death than Death Eater madness. The idea that there might be justice out there, that there was something nefarious going on that she could help stop. Maybe then she'd feel at peace, rather than full of the devastating, vast anger that kept her from sleeping. Maybe. The first step was obviously finding out more. And who better to do that with than Aurors? Addy had been in the Ministry lots recently due to questioning, re-questioning, and more questioning (last time she'd thrown something at the questioner and as such had not been invited back) about what she could remember, and so she knew the way to the DMLE like the back of her hand. She wasn't using her hands as a map, however - they were currently full of food items - a tray of coffee with two mugs and a bag of miscellaneous pastry. Something she'd learned from the Italian side of the family - food was a good way to woo people's confidences. She looked a bit more like herself recently; her lips were done after almost three weeks of bare skin and it felt soothing to have that war paint covering her frown. Her hair was drawn back into a bun, and her eyes were direct, though they didn't mask any discontent with her life and certainly didn't hide the dark circles. Addy was good at lipstick, but not at all at concealer. Perhaps it was the Gryffindor in her that led her to be honest, or maybe it was just her father's teachings. Either way, she was here, she was ready, and she was going to the Auror who she felt she had a decent connection with: Crystal Meadowes. Sidling through the desks with a facsimile of her usual attention-grabbing stride, Addy slid up to Crystal's desk a bit nervously, quirking a tiny smile. " Hi," she greeted, and held up the coffee. " I come bearing gifts. D'you have some time?"

Crystal had spent the last five minutes reading the same letter over and over. Which might seem a bit excessive considering it only consisted of three sentences. But those three sentences had set a fire in her mind. Someone had been cleaning through all of Julius Stark’s paperwork and had found a letter to the DMLE among the parchments. It probably would’ve been thrown out, but said paper pusher had been on their way to the DMLE office anyway and had decided to drop it off. They had then crossed paths with Crystal, on her way back from delivering long overdue paperwork up to Hermione’s department. (How could they honestly be expected to write reports after everything that had happened?) All thoughts of utterly ridiculous protocols had vanished from Crystal’s mind as she skimmed the short letter. It is of the utmost importance that I speak to your department as quickly as possible. What in the world had Stark been going on about? And then there was the rest of it - Please keep this quiet. Time and silence are of the essence. Whatever it was, Stark hadn’t wanted anyone to know. He must have written the letter right before he was killed since it was finished but had never been mailed. And that timing was far too coincidental for Crystal to ignore. So she had kept the letter to herself, taking it back to her desk while she tried to puzzle it out.
She was still puzzling when she caught sight of none other than Addy Stark herself entering the office. Crystal would’ve liked Addy as it was, but Julius Stark’s death had given the auror a fiercely protective streak for his daughter. Call it empathy. If there was anything she could do to help, Crystal was determined to do it. But Addy didn’t appear to be here for another interview. Not if the tray in her hands was any indication. Crystal folded up the letter and slid it into her pocket as it became clear Addy was headed her way. No sense in worrying her. Not when it might just be nothing.
She was fingering a perfectly innocuous looking report when Addy reached her. The younger woman seemed to be holding herself together pretty well considering the circumstances. And Crystal knew better than to ask how she was doing or offer platitudes. If Addy broke, that would be the time for hugs and sympathy. Until then, she would probably far prefer it if everyone didn’t treat her like she was made of glass. That had been Crystal’s feeling when her own father died. So she smiled warmly up at Addy. “Hey. What’s up?” Then she saw the coffee and pastries. Fantastic. She could do with a break. Still, her eyes narrowed suspiciously as she looked back up at Addy. She was quickly coming to see that Addy was like her in a lot of ways, so it was a safe bet she shared Crystal’s knack for being about as subtle as a sledgehammer. “Is that supposed to be a bribe? Because if it is, it’s working.”
Turned out Addy did want something. Probably information about the investigation into her father’s death, if the food was any indication. It was what Crystal would have wanted. She wasn’t really supposed to be discussing that, but she wasn’t about to send Addy away. At the very least they could have a simple chat. And maybe Crystal would casually slip in a few harmless bits of information along the way. Birds of a feather and all that. “Yeah, sure.” She stood to her feet and looked around the office, her eyes lighting on a nearby room used for meetings. “Let’s go over here. We can talk in private.” She led Addy through the maze of desks to the door, holding it open for the younger girl to enter first. Crystal closed the door behind her and shut the blinds to keep out the prying eyes. There was a large table in the middle of the room surrounded by chairs. Crystal went over to the table and pushed herself up to sit on the edge of it, using her toe to push out the chair beside her in a silent signal for Addy to have a seat if she wanted. “So what’s going on?” Even if she was wrong and this was somehow a purely social call, Crystal was still willing to be a listening ear. Addy could probably do with a friend who understood her situation.

Thankfully for everyone in the Auror department, Addy was rather dexterous; it came from Quidditch training and long routines of doing dishes in an awkward kitchen. She'd even waitressed once upon a time when she'd been saving up for her current broom, something she'd wanted to get for herself. Regardless of how she'd gotten that way, it was useful today, as her mind was rather preoccupied with whys and wherefores and not entirely with putting one foot in front of the other. Thankfully, she never wore heels, finding them massively uncomfortable, and so at least she didn't have that problem as she wove in and out of the desks, glancing this way and that when the occasional flash of red hair, pink hair or black hair caught her eye.
Crystal's hair wasn't one of those sensational colours, but when she spotted the other woman Addy felt relieved. Coffee tray clutched in her hands, she sidled up and nodded companionably at Crystal's greeting, eyes widening innocently as Crystal's narrowed. "It's a gift," she insisted, lips twitching. "Or, if you like, a bribe to take a break from paperwork. If you even need incentive to get away from that." Very good, very casual. Addy might not be a great actress or a good liar, but she was friendly. And she was fairly sure no sane person liked paperwork. Not even her father had liked it...
Thankfully, the other woman (whether she'd seen through Addy or not) decided to take a break, and Addy followed her dutifully towards a room, testing to make sure that everything on her tray was balanced before she did so. It was a meeting room, which Crystal immediately closed off (so much for Addy being subtle), and then sat on the desk. Addy put the coffee tray down and took one for herself before sitting in the proffered chair and stretching her legs up on the table, booted feet crossing carefully. "Not... much," she started lamely, sipping at the beverage and glancing at the door. "I just... thinking too much, you know?" She wrinkled her nose and waved at the food with a meaningful eyebrow. "And I... I heard something that's bothering me," she finished decidedly, looking up at the older woman with a furrowed brow. "About my," Addy swallowed. "Dad."

Addy was quite adamant that it was not a bribe, it was a gift. Crystal shrugged and grinned knowingly up at the younger woman. “Whatever word you want to use.” She turned a critical eye to her report before looking back at Addy. Crystal was most definitely not Hermione Granger. Getting her to file reports was like pulling teeth. Any excuse was a worthy one, regardless of how boring said excuse might be. It couldn’t possibly be worse than paperwork. “Yeah, no. No incentive needed.”
Crystal took a mug from the tray Addy set down, cradling the warmth between both her hands. A small sip drew an appreciative nod from an auror. If the quickest way to a man’s heart was through his stomach, the quickest way to an auror’s was coffee. She nudged another chair over with her foot and set both her feet on the seat of it. There was most definitely something going on as Addy started to talk. And judging from her face, Crystal had a fair idea what it might be about. “Yeah, I get that,” she said sympathetically. She’d done far too much thinking after her own father died. The corner of her mouth twitched as she added, “Thinking’s rubbish. I try not to do it too much.” Crystal just wouldn’t be Crystal if she didn’t try to throw in a joke. Maybe it would help Addy’s mood a bit.
So this was about Julius Stark. Crystal turned her body toward Addy ever so slightly in a silent signal she was listening. She could only imagine what it must have been like losing a dad who was famous. Losing Crystal’s own father had been hard enough. But it also hadn’t made the papers or been fodder for every gossip on the street. That had to make things even more complicated. There was certainly a lot flying around about Stark right now. Most of it was rubbish. But between Addy’s frown and the letter suddenly burning a hole through Crystal’s pocket, bits and pieces of partially overheard conversations were starting to come back to her. Phrases she had shrugged off at the time now were snagging her interest. Besides, Addy seemed like a smart girl. She wouldn’t jump at every conspiracy theory that crossed her path. If she had decided it was worth bringing to the auror department, of all places, she must think it was important. Crystal’s own brow furrowed a little as she lowered the coffee cup to balance it on her knee. She leaned forward a bit unconsciously. Addy had her complete and undivided attention. “Okay. What’d you hear?”

Addy merely smiled at the return volley, eyebrows raising knowingly as Crystal looked between Addy and her reports. There was a reason Addy'd never tried for a job with paperwork - even the Captain's position - and it seemed that Crystal agreed with her anti-paperwork mindset as she left her desk with little further coaxing.
The two of them sipped at coffee, Addy hoping that the drink would quell some of the nervous butterflies floating at random around her stomach. If anything, it just amped them up, as Crystal decided to get right to the heart of the matter. It was very Addy-esque, which was one of the reasons she liked Crystal, but for once she almost wished for a little prevarication. She wasn't quite sure how to phrase what she wanted to say. "I'd have to agree," Addy murmured into her coffee, leaving lipstick marks on the rim of the cup. "It's a drag." She offered a small smile.
There was a pause, but Addy knew that Crystal was listening. She'd shifted in her seat, and her expression was simultaneously present and not, as if running through something in her head, thinking intently. That heartened Addy as it worried her - Crystal, she felt sure, would believe her, but that also meant it was all true, and while she liked the idea of someone to blame for her father's death that didn't mean she was particularly keen to discover an evil political machine. Unfortunately, life wasn't all roses, and so Addy took a breath and cradled her coffee in her lap, thoughtfully.
"I ran into someone at the hospital in this department," she offered, "But they didn't recognize me. I was glad of it at the time but..." Addy bit her painted lip and continued, "They started talking about the people who... killed him..." she swallowed. "Having help. Like something was off about the whole thing." She peered up at Crystal, face set. "Do you think they were just gossiping?"

Crystal’s brow furrowed in a slight frown as Addy talked. This was putting her in quite the tricky position. She filed away a few questions for later, namely discovering who exactly had been talking to Addy. It could’ve been anyone. Exhaustion made for loose tongues, and the Ministry had been running itself into the ground. But right now there was a more pressing matter to deal with. To tell the truth or keep it professional? That was the question. She let go of the mug on her knee with one hand so she could chew absently on the end of her thumbnail. It said a lot about how much she had grown up in the last few years that she didn’t just automatically hang protocol and dive in. But her hesitation didn’t last long.
“Okay, here’s the thing,” she said, lowering her hand from her mouth. “On the record, I’m supposed to tell you that everything’s fine, and we’re doing all we can to investigate, and there’s no evidence of a conspiracy, and you shouldn’t worry about it because we’ll let you know if we find anything. But off the record – and my supervisors will give me hell if they find out I’m telling you this, but – off the record…" She paused, giving Addy a weighing look. This was the point of no return. "No. I think they might have been right. I don’t think this case is as clean cut as we’re supposed to believe.”
She studied Addy’s face carefully to see how that would go over. Stark’s daughter seemed like a strong girl. But Crystal knew from personal experience what it was like to lose a father. If Addy went off like a loose cannon, it could jeopardize any chance of ever finding out the truth. Then again, Crystal’s own past was the very reason she understood just how badly Addy needed answers. That was the thought that finally did her in. Stuff professionalism. Addy deserved to know. She reached into her pocket and pulled Stark’s letter. “An aide found this while they were cleaning out your dad’s desk. It could be nothing, or… Well, just read it.” She held the parchment out to Addy. The words on the page would speak for themselves. Crystal waited in silence for Addy to read over the short handful of sentences. This could be an Earth-shattering blow, the confirmation of something Addy hadn't even been sure she believed until now. When Crystal spoke again, her voice was quiet and dreadfully serious. “Addy, I think your dad knew he was in trouble. And I think someone in the Ministry helped have him killed.”
