Heroes and Villains

Alex was starting to get really frustrated. She had spent her afternoon poking around Godric’s Hollow to absolutely no avail. The trails were officially cold. The werewolves who had attacked the town were in the wind, and there wasn't a damn thing Alex could do about it. All worked up with no place to go, she found herself wandering down a street toward the Lupin house. The werewolf who lived there might not have any obvious connections to what had happened, but not being a villain didn’t make someone a hero. Alex didn’t trust him at all. Sooner or later he would snap. They always did, no matter how well-adjusted they seemed. And when he did, she would be there to put him down. But for now she would content herself with being seen hanging around, a silent reminder that someone was watching, waiting for him to make a mistake.
As luck would have it, she didn’t have to walk all the way to the house itself. It was a warm day out, and Lupin had apparently decided to take advantage of that fact. Alex caught sight of him in the park with two children as she walked past. So he was out with his family. Even better. Maybe seeing her hanging around would get him good and rattled. Alex leaned casually against a street lamp in full view and watched him playing with the two children, silently waiting for the moment when he would notice her and his face would fall. But it didn’t come. The man was completely focused on the young twins with him. All three were laughing as they chased each other around. Like a completely normal family.
Something about that scene struck Alex right in the gut. Maybe the fact that it was a young boy and girl who looked completely, blissfully happy. The sort of happy Alex could only just barely remember herself and Franz ever being, and that way back when she had been about that age. Or maybe it was the look on Lupin’s face. It was a look Alex’s own father had never directed at her. Her brow furrowed as she tired to place that expression. And then it finally hit her – love. The werewolf making a fool of himself in the middle of a public park was in love with his children. Alex’s stomach twisted painfully. She was under no illusions that her father or grandfather had ever felt that way about her. Maybe Franz had once, but those days were long gone. And here was this... this monster not only having children but actually looking at them as if they were the very center of his world. He shouldn't even be capable of that. It wasn't right. And staring at it stung like lemon juice on a paper cut.
Of course Lupin chose that moment to finally see Alex standing at the edge of the park. She could’ve easily stood her ground, using a casual smirk to get across the point she had come to make. But now the two children were curiously looking her way and suddenly making that point was the last thing Alex wanted to do. “Scheisse,” she muttered as she pushed herself away from the light pole. She turned to go, fully intending to return the way she had come and apparate back to London. But she had only just started down the street when she heard footsteps behind her. And then Lupin’s voice was calling out to her. Son of a… Alex turned around, doing her best to look and sound irritated. But the usual hostile edge was missing from her voice. “What?” As if she was the one whose privacy was being infringed upon instead of the other way around. There was no way in hell she was letting someone like him get to her. She was supposed to be the one getting to him, damn it. Not the other way around. She was better than this. Her father had raised her better.
