Darkness was plaguing the wizarding world lately, making both Mali's floor and her mind over full. New patients poured in by the day and little fragments of guilt broke free from the mental box she tucked it away in.. St. Mungo's was both her means of escape and a mental prison. Little reminders of the patients she and Theo lost were all over, but there were times she could lose herself in the work and not think about any of it at all. That was the mode she was in today. There was three new patients from a small scale Death Eater attack and she was nothing but a blur of acid green robes as she moved from room to room. That was, until, a tall and uncomfortable looking Medi-Wizard came stamping through the halls. She was standing at the supply cabinet, worrying her lip between her teeth while she thought over her treatment options. Theo grabbed her attention the moment he wandered onto the floor, like her eyes naturally gravitated towards him. All the heaviness felt a little lighter when he was around, he was her bright spot in the darkness. Her heart gave a thrill, despite his distressed look. Of course he looked distressed, he hadn't stepped foot on this floor since... the incident and it could be quite a shock to be slapped with all the horrible memories at once. Mali left the potion cabinet and headed off towards Theo but it seemed that just being in the corridor was starting to overwhelm him. She was on him in second, grabbing his hand and pulling him into an empty room to avoid a breakdown in the middle of the hospital."Hey" she said, shutting the door beside them. Mali was still very much in the honey moon phase of their relationship and found herself smiling up at him despite the circumstances. Her heart thrilled in her chest, being this close to him. Her face took on a line of worry and she reached out to take his hand. "What's going on? What's wrong?" she asked while enjoying the way his palm fit in her own. "Are you alright?" She knew he wasn't, not here, but she didn't know how to fix not being alright. Maybe if they cleared their consciences they could truly begin to heal their mental wounds and move on. Maybe. But at what consequence? That wasn't something she could think about right now, just Theo and how to make him feel better. Mali disentangled her hand from his, reaching up to run her thumb over his cheek. People often underestimated the power of touch but it was Mali's preferred method of soothing. They were so quick to turn to things like calming draughts and analgesic potions while overlooking the fact that holding a hand or fingers combing through one's hair were often just as effective, letting the patient know that someone was really, physically there for them and that they cared. ___________________________________ Theo Ashland

Theo had to do this. He couldn't avoid an entire floor of his workplace for the rest of his career, no matter how little his daily duties actually brought him up here. The tearoom was above the third floor, and if Theo ever wanted a snack at work again...well. Beyond that, he imagined it looked a little suspicious, the wide berth he gave the Spell Damage ward - and Theo was very sensitive to looking suspicious these days. He was trying his hardest to just act normal, so when he was asked by a frazzled looking Healer to deliver a restock of calming draughts to the third floor, just as a favor, he didn't say no this time. This was it. He was returning to the scene of the crime.
Mali was up here somewhere, he knew. As he disembarked the stairs that connected the second floor to the third, he kept this at the forefront of his mind. They worked together but he hardly saw her there now because of how much he avoided this floor. He didn't know how she was capable of being up here on a daily basis, honestly - but he was glad she was. Because there was no way in hell he would have even been able to exit the stairs without the reminder that her face, very probably smiling beautifully, was somewhere in the very near vicinity - to run to in case he couldn't take it.
He found the third floor itself wasn't so bad. It resembled much of the rest of the hospital, a maze of corridors with rooms all over the place. It wasn't until he finally looked at the room number on the restock package in his hand that his heart dropped clear out of his chest. The fragile package would have fallen to the floor, too, if Theo's grip on it didn't immediately turn white-knuckled. That room was in the Janus Thickey ward. The third floor was one thing, but that ward was another entirely. That was the exact space where it happened, everything he'd done to end up like this. Already he started to shake, the vials in the package rattling against one another. But he had to do this. He was more than halfway there, and turning back now would be another cowardly action he could never forgive himself for.
On his slow walk to the locked ward, Theo looked everywhere for Mali, peeking into patient rooms and supply closets alike. He would give anything to have her there right now, holding him together while he did this. But he couldn't rely on her for every little thing, some part of him knew that (just a very quiet part). He couldn't put the burden of his entire life on her shoulders. He had to at least try to do it on his own. And try he did. Really, really tried.
He made it relatively far into the ward before the spins got to him. Right about the spot he'd stood where he committed his first murder, actually. Theo remembered that spot very, very well, identifying the particular ceiling tiles and hairline cracks in the walls with an immediacy that was dizzying. This was it, the exact spot. The exact moment he'd used every ounce of his will to avoid in the past weeks. Not just physically avoid, but mentally. The Imperius Curse was a double curse, really, because you always remembered what you did even if you didn't have a choice in doing it. Theo chose not to remember; he chose to block it all out and stow it deep away. The sensation of being in the very corridor where it all happened fished it all right out, mind pairing place with memory as minds are wont to do.
Those memories had spent so long in the darkness that they festered. Exposed to the present now, the light they abhorred, they felt like a disease burning their way through Theo's body. His grip on the potion package now was so tight that he crushed the vials within, the thick paper protecting his hand from the new shards of glass and leaking liquid within. His whole body was locked up in that same way, crushing in on his insides. He couldn't move, couldn't breathe, his heart couldn't even beat properly. His face crushed inward too, screwing up in terror as he watched a ghost of himself commit murder before his very eyes. There was Mister Fischer, and Mister Longbottom, and Mali...
But Mali wasn't sobbing this time. She was looking up at him, touching him, speaking to him. Theo stumbled along willingly behind her, mindless of what he was actually doing. It wasn't until he was actually behind a closed door with her, the corridor of his nightmares once again blocked out, that he could relax the tension in his muscles, the choke-hold on his brain. He came out of it, the panic he thought he'd finally moved past, like a noodle. He fell limp against her touch - and her smile, gods, her smile. She was smiling at him and not anything else because that's what she did now, what they did for each other, and the relief he felt from that reminder was indescribable. Mali probably knew this by now, from days and nights with Theo, but he was touchy-feely, too. Incredibly. It was the best way he knew how to express himself (words often didn't work out so well for him) and nothing made him feel better than the physical presence of another person close to him. He scooped Mali into a hug, tight, hiding his face against her neck for some moments to gain some of his composure back. Going from zero to sixty back to zero in so short a time left him a bit blubbery.
"I thought I could do it," he spoke finally, pulling back to look at her. "You said we had to, or someone had to, so I tried. But I can't, Mali, I can't. I can't do it. How am I going to make it like this?"

Theo was well on his way to actually needing a calming draught. He was stuck in his spot, hands crushing (actually crushing, she heard the sound of breaking glass) the package he carried. The happiness at seeing Theo was overshadowed by worry and empathy. Her heart hurt for him, physically and truly hurt. She had no idea how he managed to pick up that very same wand that cast those awful spells day after day, but Theo did it. Mali had her strength in returning to the scene of the crime but Theo had his strength too in just existing and moving forward after what was thrust upon him.
"Here, let me take this." Mali said as she coaxed the ruined package from his hands before tugging him away to the safety of an empty patient room. He was compliant, allowing himself to bed led away just as he had that fateful day. It was a hallmark of their relationship, Mali taking charge and Theo falling obediently in step behind her, even for simple things like exploring haunted shacks. Once inside, safely behind the door she discarded the package on the counter, a victim of Theo's wakening nightmare, and turned her attention to coaxing him down off the trauma lined cliff. Her touch seemed to chase away all of the tension.
Theo grabbed her in a hug and Mali wrapped an arm around his back, pulling him to her and holding him close like she could hold all his broken pieces together. Leaning her head against his, Mali stroked through his hair with her free hand, not speaking a word. She was just there to be whatever support he needed, let him lead the way. When he finally pulled back Mali listened to him speak, biting on the inside of her cheek. Her heart crumbled for him, pulverized to the point that there were no pieces to try and glue back together.
Mali was left speechless, unsure of what to say or how to say it to fix what was broken in Theo. It was an uncomfortable feeling for her, normally she could talk to a brick wall. To cover her silence she reached up to wipe away his residual tears before soothing "But you did it." Her voice was gentle with an edge of firmness, leaving no room for protest. "It wasn't perfect but you managed to make it here and you can do it again. It'll be easier next time. I'm really proud of you for making it this far." It couldn't have been easy. It was hard enough for her and she didn't unwillingly kill anyone. "Now what was in the box? We'll fix it and I'll help you deliver it. Alright?" They were in this together, whether it was fleeing crime scenes or restocking shelves. Theo had Mali and Mali had Theo and it was wonderful, dark spots and all.

With relief and draining tension also came realization. He'd been mindless in the hallway, blacked out to the unbearable world around him. Realizing he'd followed Mali even in that terrible uncontrolled state, just somehow knowing she was safety among all the dark around him, made him hold her a little tighter to him. How did Theo, the selfish and the problem-ridden, deserve someone so good? He realized his hands were empty, too, wrapped instead around her. She'd taken the broken package away so he wouldn't hurt himself - he recalled the faint shattering of glass outside. Mali knew him so intuitively it was no wonder he wanted to hold on forever.
That, and it was so much easier than talking. He felt comfort in Mali's arms but her words made his own throat close up. She was proud of him. He couldn't let her down by breaking back down at the very thought of there being a 'next time' for this. Theo was stuck wondering how he was even going to get out of this room without going back into that hallway. "Does it get easier?" He was questioning her, but he was sincere. Theo didn't know if it ever really got easier, any of it. Maybe because his emotions were so intense, but Theo still felt rather strongly about whatever tragedies struck over his years. Maybe not all the time, but they still hurt. Maybe that's what Mali meant by easier. Giving yourself some time so it only hurt every once in a while. Theo thought he might be able to live with that - if he could find a way to end the panic attacks. "I get so worked up it feels like it's going to kill me."
Not that it was surprising at this point, but Mali knew exactly the right direction to head things. Distraction. Second best to a good hug was a good distraction. "Calming draughts," he said with the smallest of smiles at the irony. He nodded at her directive. "Okay. They're probably all ruined, though." Theo cast a glance at the crumpled package, his gaze worming over to the empty patient bed as exhaustion went back and forth in his body like a wave. He moved away from Mali to slump down on the edge of the bed, eyeing the package with a strange sort of embarrassment at having ruined it because he couldn't control himself.

Mali tilted her head, gaze drifting to the side and away from Theo as she searched for the right thing to say. On one hand, she didn't want to discourage him and say no but on the other she didn't want to lie. Honestly, she was sick of lying. Everything turned into a lie anymore. Mali lied to aurors and men with the signs of dark spell damage, she lied to her roommate and to everyone really. So much dishonesty for someone who prided themselves on being trustworthy. "Sometimes." she said finally, refocusing on Theo. "Sometimes it's really easy and sometimes it's not. You have to endure both and then the easy times start to come more frequently." There were times when it almost felt like nothing bad happened in those halls, that if she could just avoid thinking about Mister Longbottom and Mister Fischer that she could pretend they were just tucked away in their rooms. Maybe sleeping. There were other times were the ghost like memories haunted the corridors, where she could see their faces everywhere. The heaviness was too much and she turned to a little light humor, teasing "It's not allowed to kill you, I'm rather attached to having you around.
Calming draughts. Mali didn't see the irony at first but she did see a tiny little smile creeping across Theo's face and she was smiling too. Even the minuscule twitching of Theo's lips changed his whole face in her opinion and she liked it. So much so that she had to reach up and touch his face, thumb brushing over his cheek. Eventually he drifted off towards the bed, declaring the potions were ruined and she followed him perching at the very edge. "That's alright. We can get more." Mali leaned over to bump him with her shoulder, dropping her voice like it was a big secret when she told him "I know the pharmacist, he'll hook us up." Eoin, poor Eoin. In order to discreetly get more potions for the shelves she'd likely have to lie to him again. How could she explain that Theo crushed them in the midst of a panic attack without explaining why he was panicking?
She reached for his hand and propped her chin up on his shoulder. "We can sit here a bit 'til you're ready to go back out." They would go back into the corridor together when Theo was up for it. She would be with him every single step of the way. With a sigh, Mali switched from her chin to laying her head on Theo's shoulder. "I dunno what I'll tell Eoin, but he'll give us more. Maybe I'l just say I tripped and dropped them. It's certainly believable. I tripped earlier today but I wasn't carrying anything." After a pause she tacked on a "This time."

"I'm trying." Theo's declaration was as hesitant as Mali's need to look away for so long to answer him. He noticed, and it didn't give him much confidence that things would get better at all - but she was trying, too. Trying to give him a little honesty and hope and he really couldn't ask for anything else. Mali couldn't make him endure these times, some things a person had to pull up and do on their own, but she could sure make it a hell of a lot easier for him. The little smile growing on his face got its start with her light teasing - that was their thing, and Theo was so happy he had that thing, happy he had Mali to get him through this. He kissed her on the cheek. "Good. Because it's easier when I have you around." That was the utter truth of it. Just like she was doing this exact moment, Mali created a space that felt safe at those times when Theo felt the whole world was out to get him. Right up next to her felt the safest, and they stayed like that for some moments before disentangling to distract themselves with a problem they could actually solve - something else Theo was immensely grateful to Mali for.
Mali's persistent good humor was infectious - it always had been - and combined with their closed off safe space in the empty patient room, Theo felt his mood improving exponentially. He left his fear at the door, to be dealt with - with Mali by his side - after he got a chance to calm down. He dropped the attached embarrassment at having crushed the package, too, Mali's Big Secret making him nearly grin. He bumped her back with his elbow. "Yeah? Charm your way to his heart, too?" Even if he was feeling a bit lighter now, Theo couldn't deny some of the nerves that crept up at their action plan. He was having a hard time facing most of his coworkers still - apparently, not a lot of them believed his illness story from when he missed so much work, and that made him nervous. Eoin, though...he was Mali's best friend. Surely he was trustworthy.
Mali settled into his shoulder, making the offer he was too afraid to voice. He nodded his gratefulness. Theo didn't want to keep Mali from her work - and really, he hated seeming so weak - but he was far from ready to go back into the corridor. His adrenaline from the panic had bottomed out - now he had to recuperate to get any energy at all back. "Thank you. You weren't busy, were you?" Her hand found his and he laced their fingers together. She had a little more to say about their next steps, and despite a resurgence of nerves, Theo snorted a laugh. "I certainly believe it," he teased. "How is Eoin? I haven't really been over that way lately."

"I know." she said encouragingly, patting him on the cheek. That wasn't a lie, and she even managed to smile (albeit a bit strained) at him. "That's what counts. That's what'll help make it easier." How she wished that there was a spell or a potion that would make all of this simple and easy for him. It seemed horribly unfair what Theo was thrust into. What both of them were, honestly, when all they wanted to do was protect their patients. Things went so horribly awry and they were left scrambling to cope and fix the pieces. At least she could say that she tried to intervene, to save them. Theo, tragically, didn't even have that small comfort. He was a slave to the curse cast on him, his movements that day weren't his own. The magic came from his wand, but it wasn't his magic.
He kissed her cheek, leaving a tingle behind where his lips touched. The teasing and joking eased the darkness and lightened the heavy feeling just enough to make it tolerable. It was temporary, but Mali would embrace it full on while she they could. "You're lucky I like trolls." That little joke wouldn't be taken from them by the dark witch and her Imperius curse, Mali decided. The woman already took enough from him. "I might just stick around awhile longer." Nothing could coax her away from Theo, not now. Sometimes she wondered if they'd be nearly as close without the tragedy between them but Mali was confident that eventually they would have waded through their sass on their own and saw how wonderful they were together. The incident only sped things up. She loved his sense of humor, his smile, the vulnerability that hid behind an intimidating exterior. None of that was created by the dark witch.
Her grin only grew as they sat on the bed, trying to work out what to do next. Mali laughed when Theo returned the bumping. "Yeah, something like that. Heart charming is my specialty." A smug look settled over her features and she pressed her lips together to try and quell the matching smile that tried to fight it's way to her lips before adding "As you well know." Eoin was the faithful best friend, he would help her out of any situation that she asked but Mali wasn't exactly being a good best friend in return. The expression dropped, an edge of sadness replacing the previous smugness. "I haven't told him anything about what happened. I don't know how I could even bring it up at this point." She should've told him when she saw him that night, told him something terrible happened but all she did was assure him over and over she was fine, everything was fine. They were fine. Mali hadn't been fine in a long time, it felt like. Lying to her best and closest friend didn't help. It only made her feel worse. Mali didn't necessarily like the person she'd become in the wake of the attack, there was no integrity but even with all of that she doubted she would have made a different choice. Theo needed help, she loved Theo and so she helped him. Integrity and best friends be damned.
"Not too busy." she said, another lie. They just rolled off her tongue now without any shame or regard for the truth. "They'll still be injured when you're ready to go back, don't worry about it." She lifted her head with a mock indignant look "You're lucky that I like the sound of your laugh, or I'd have something to say about that." Mali took her free hand to bop his nose, emphasizing the word 'that'. Theo asked about Eoin and Mali shrugged her shoulders. "Alright, I suppose. Your work partner called him a terrible name. I think he fancied him before that and now he's sort of... sad sometimes. Your partner's a prat, by the way and I'd like to kick him in his shins." After a short pause Mali added "And if I see him, I will."

Mali's words of encouragement, full of warmth, edged into teasing that made him feel light, and Theo had to take a moment to appreciate that not many people in his life had ever managed to make him feel both of those things - bad mood or not. When he was done staring like a lovesick puppy, Mali had moved on fully to her favorite joke of all time. His too, really - especially now. It was one thing they salvaged from their lives before the attack. Maybe it was just a little joke, but it was theirs. No one else could have it. "I knew all along that's why you were into me. You wouldn't tease me so mercilessly if you didn't like it," he winked down at her, broad grin spreading over his face when she spoke again. "Yeah? Promise?" He was grinning, but vulnerability peeked out from behind his words, from the raw spot his encounter outside and his comedown in this room had made in his chest. He needed her to stick around, now and later.
Because she certainly worked her healing magic over him. Heart charming, is what they would call it. By nature, Theo's emotions were a beast for anyone to manage - wild and unpredictable. Hard pressed was the person tasked with trying to calm him down. That's why Mali's ability to make him feel both warm and light was such a perfect fit - she was so wonderfully distracting that he simply didn't have the attention span enough to be angry or sad or panicked. It was her specialty, they could most certainly agree on that. Theo was about to tell her as much, her and her adorable little smug face, but she beat him to it. He smiled instead, strengthening his own and squeezing her hand when her face suddenly dropped. It was his turn now. Mali needed him too, she was hurting too, and Theo wouldn't let her struggle alone just because he was having a bad day (week...life...whatever). "I haven't told any of my family, either," he admitted. "It's kind of rough, isn't it, living with someone and feeling like you're hiding? I reckon that gets easier as time goes on, too. Maybe one day. Those are the people we know we can trust, at least." Theo ended in uncomfortable silence. His advice didn't feel as comfortable as Mali's, somehow. He let it hang in the air, obtrusive, thinking he might need to do some serious soul searching if he was going to be as good for Mali as he wanted to be. He certainly didn't want to make it any harder for her than he already had.
At least he wasn't taking up all her time, supposedly. He nodded, not quite sure if he believed that she wasn't busy, but he definitely wasn't going to push it. She was right, after all. They'd still be there when she got back, and right now, he really needed her - for things like bopping him on the nose and making him laugh again. "C'mon, I'm too cute to get mad at." He matched her mock indignant look with his own look of mock hurt. His expression turned to one of genuine surprise as Mali answered him about Eoin. "Tristan?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. What was he going around calling people names for? Especially people like Eoin. Theo considered Mali's appraisal of Tristan for a moment, cocking his head to the side. "Bloke could probably use a kick in the shins every once in a while." Most tall, egotistical trolls could. "What did he call him?"
