Mali's heart was pounding in her chest, the blood was rushing in her ears and her breath was quick. She wiped sweaty palms on her jeans while tingles of anxiety raced down her spine. Mali stood just inside the Diagon Alley entrance, back pressed flat against the stone. It had been days since the Dementors infiltrated Diagon Alley and all things considered, Mali was coping brilliantly. She functioned, she smiled, she laughed. Dark memories and traumatic thoughts didn't infiltrate her day to day life, those were saved for private moments when she was curled up with Theo or sprawled out with Eoin, painting their nails.
Now, though, her coping was reaching it's breaking point. She had to actually step foot in the alley. Mali needed to visit Gringotts and the idea of stopping by one of the stalls selling pendants claimed to provide the wearer protection from the dark arts was an appealing one. She didn't really buy into the quackery behind such objects, at least not completely.. Maybe a little. She did have to get there, though. The journey from the entrance where she had taken root to the cobblestone began with one tentative step. Then another. Soon, Mali was walking swiftly towards the bank 'til she came to the very spot she encountered the Dementor. She froze again, getting lost in the memory and the memory of a memory. Dread sat heavily in the pit of her stomach, thoughts fluttering between dementors, former patients, mister lupin and Theo.
Mali couldve stood there for quite some time, panicking over what happened days and days ago but she was jolted out of the impending panic attack by a hand on her shoulder, making her jump and yelp in surprise. Her fight or flight instinct kicked in and surprisingly, Mali chose fight. She swung wildly while she whipped around, her fist just missing the face of the person who approached her.

Ophelia was exhausted. Being a healer was hard enough, but with the amount of attacks and disasters happening lately her job had gotten tougher. It'd be alright if she didn't have other commitments outside of work, but she was a mother and her children too demanded her attention. She barely had enough energy to roll out of bed this morning, on one pf her rare days off work. Robin had a doctor's appointment which her father had ran him to, much to Ophelia's gratitude. So she'd decided to have a girly shopping day with Imogen, as a reward for her daughter being so good. The little girl in question was sitting up on her mum's shoulders, happily munching her way through a box of Bertie's every flavour beans and occasionally pointing out different shops she wanted to go into. Ophelia was about to take yet another trip into Flourish and Blotts (which didn't bother her in the slightest) when she spotted a rather anxious looking Mali. Though she didn't talk to her outside of work, she liked Miss Johar. She was always happy and energetic, her enthusiasm was infectious. But now, she looked so nervous. Ophelia gently lowered Imogen off of her shoulders, much to the girls dismay and held on to her daughter's sticky hand tightly not wanting to lose her in the crowds. She quickly made her way over to her co-worker, placing a hand on her shoulder. She wasn't expecting Mali's wild reaction, and flinched as the other woman's fist barely missed her face. Imogen looked panicked as her mother dodged the fist, and gripped tightly onto Ophelia's arm. Ophelia's eyes were wide with fear and confusion as she softly asked "Miss Johar, are you quite alright?" The Fight or Flight response died just as soon as Mali saw who she was swinging at. The Healer let out the breathe that she'd been holding and ran a hand through her long dark hair. An uneasy look settled over her features, tinged with guilt. She caught her lower lip between her teeth and shoved her hands into the pockets of her jeans. "I'm sorry, just a bit jumpy with everything that's happened." especially considering the setting. Shifting her weight from foot to foot, Mali looked down at the cobblestone. It looked like all the other cobblestone but this patch of it held the awful memory of the dementor and all the things that bubbled up when it drew near.
She felt very awkward, kind of guilty and sort've silly over the whole thing. It was broad daylight, in the middle of a crowded alley and she was swinging on innocent people with children in tow. Gods, she needed to get a grip. Mali, desperate to smooth things over looked back up to the woman with a strained half smile. "Please, my name is Mali. We work together after all. Sort've. We work for the same people, at least." Mali stuck to her spell damage floor most of the time, save for her one foray into Medi-Wizardry with Theo on the day of the Eye incident. It definitely wasn't her cup of tea, she broke down over the stress. Her talents laid in the finesse of repairing complicated spell damage in a calm, controlled environment, not grappling with confused patients in a battle zone. "You've got two children, don't you?" she asked with a tilt of her head. If she remembered correctly there was a boy too. She crouched down to the child, feeling awful that her gut reaction had frightened the child. "Are you having a girl's day with mummy?"

Ophelia watched Mali closely, gently squeezing Imogen's hand to let her know that it was alright. Anyone could tell that Mali was far from okay, but given the current circumstances that was understandable. Ophelia bit her lip, anxious for the poor girl in front of her. She wasn't exactly the best at talking to people but she noticed subtle changes in people's demeanour and right now, Mali looked so much smaller than she usually did.
She rejected her apology, shaking her head.
"It's fine, we're all a bit on edge at the moment."
She nodded sheepishly when Miss Johar asked her to call her Mali. She rarely called her colleagues by their first names, despite their constant demands to. It was polite to use second names with your superiors and equals.
"Yes... Robin is with his Grandfather so it's just the two of us for the minute."
She looked down at Imogen, who seemed to have calmed down slightly. She was still hiding behind her arm but her grip was no where near as tight. Ophelia bent down and picked up her daughter, hoisting her onto her hip. Planting a kiss on her cheek she waited for her daughter's response.
Imogen looked up at the lady in front of her. Since mummy had been talking to her, she decided that the woman probably wasn't a stranger or a bully. "We're going book shopping! Mummy says I can buy a spell book for when I get my wand." She smiled proudly.

Mali nodded when Ophelia spoke, essentially turning down her apology in a gentle way, as if there was no need for one. There certainly was, but Ophelia was kind and sweet, someone who easily overlooked nearly being clocked hard by a fist to the face. Mali toed at the ground, uncomfortable with how her actions made her feel even if Ophelia brushed them off. "i suppose you're right." It was true, something she would do well to remember. Everyone was having a hard time, not just her personally. Healers were tried, people were scared, the mood of the wizarding world as a whole had certainly changed drastically over the past few months. "It seems to be calming down though, doesn't it?" Aside from the dementors, and the werewolves, and the death eaters. Maybe it wasn't calming down at all but it was easier to pretend it was rather than hold her breath in anticipation of the next disaster.
Robin, that's right. That was the boys name. She found herself grinning when the child spoke up. Little ones had a soft spot in her heart and Miss Imogen was precious and seemed to be fond of books. Probably a Ravenclaw in the making, like her mum. "Splendid!" Mali said, clapping her hands together. "You can never have enough books, what sort've magic will be your favorite, do you think? I'm partial to charms myself, d'you know that you can make teacups dance with them?" As a muggleborn, Mali sometimes wondered if little magic tricks such as making a tea cup dance across a table was as spectacular to magical children as it was to someone who didn't grow up surrounded by magic since birth.

Ophelia grimaced when Mali spoke of it calming down. True nothing had exploded for a little while, but St. Mungo's was as busy as ever with all of the seemingly random attacks from various creatures.
"I... suppose."
She didn't sound too convincing, but it was better than focusing on all of the terrible things that had happened recently.
"Hopefully they'll get to the bottom of this."
Ophelia wasn't sure who she meant by they. Sure she could be talking about the Ministry, but they didn't seem to be of much help; seeing as they carted of one of their best healers for questioning seemingly randomly, she wasn't going to hold their breath for them doing much of anything.
Ophelia smiled at Imogen as her daughter replied to Mali's question, pleased to see that she'd gotten over her initial panic.
"Tell Miss Mali what we did the other day!"
She turned her attention back to her colleague.
"Miss Av- Ashley told me some charms that she shows off to Kallie and I thought I'd-"
Imogen interjected excitedly
"Mummy and I made paper butterfly's and coloured them in and then Mummy made them fly like real butterflies!"
The five year old exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder.
"I want to learn Transfig- Transfig- Transfig-"
"Transfiguration?"
Ophelia asked her daughter, who nodded happily.
"Then I could turn Brussels sprouts into cupcakes and I'd never have to eat yucky vegetables again!"

There was a grimace and Mali noted it with regret. How she wished it were true, that things were improving and calming down, that there wasn't a new batch of Death Eater victims. It wasn't just the Death Eaters either, near exsanguinated bodies were showing up with more frequency. Mali dreaded the full moon with so many newly turned werewolves it was sure to be a bloody one. All anyone could do was grin and bear it. "I'm sure they will, sooner rather than later. I'm sure they're working hard." They to Mali meant Aurors, maybe due to her own experiences. As skeptical as she was over the new Minister she was confident the aurors were taking the threats to the safety of the wizarding world very seriously and working very diligently.
Instead of focusing on all the bad, one could focus on the bright spots. Like sweet little girls. Mali tilted her head as Ophelia spoke. "D'you call everyone by their last name? That's so formal. I'd like to think we're all past that as coworkers, at least." Even if she wasn't terribly fond of some of them. Ashley was alright but there were others that inexplicably rubbed her the wrong way. Her attention returned to the small one, enamored by her enthusiasm "Oh!" Mali exclaimed, eyes wide in dramatic amazement over the tale of paper butterflies. "That's wonderful! I bet that was a complicated bit of magic, your mummy must be a Ravenclaw. They're good at everything.."
Mali listened patiently as the child tried to work out the name for Transfiguration, hands resting on her knees as she crouched to the girl's eye level. "That's a really impressive branch of magic. Vegetables into cupcakes is a brilliant idea! You know they say people who are really good at Transfiguration can turn into animals!" She tapped her chin thoughtfully as she pondered her next statement. "What animal would you turn into I wonder? Maybe an owl, they're supposed to be really smart, just like you."

Ophelia gave a sheepish smile when Mali asked about the last name thing. Shed been raised in quite a middle-class background where her father always referred to his colleagues by their last names.
"Force of habit, my father used to do it all the time. I think I was the only one he talked to completely informally."
Imogen looked astounded that Mali had figured out her mother's past house
"She is a Ravenclaw where all the smartest people are!"
She gave her mum a bright smile "Mama is the smartest person I know! Apart from Grandpa, but he's muggle smart not magic smart."
She said matter of factedly, making Ophelia try not to let out a small laugh at her daughter's response.
Imogen thought for a little while about Mali's question... what animal would she be? She liked being called smart and her mummy often called her a clever girl.
"I think I'd be a fox."
She decided
"Because they're smart, Roald Dahl said so in Fantastic Mr Fox but they are cute and I'm cute."
Ophelia giggled at her daughter's response, giving her daughter an adoring smile.
"You're also as sly as a fox when you want to be."
She looked back up at Mali.
"She fits into all of the houses... Robin is an absolute Ravenclaw but Imogen I'm not so sure."
