The atmosphere at St. Mungo's had shifted recently. Healers rarely hung around the staff room after their shift was over, patients were more weary and even the usually chirpy and gossiping Receptionists were quiet. Ophelia had noticed this shift. She didn't like it.
The woman in question was dead on her feet. With all of the recent attacks and breaches, she'd taken on longer shifts and worked through her breaks to provide for the influx of patients. She barely slept at night, taking short power naps in the staff room whenever she had a spare five minutes. Her hair was greasy, there were bags under her eyes and her lips were chapped and broken. She was not doing well.
She hurried her way down the corridor, carrying a mountain of bedsheets to replace. She wasn't paying attention to her surroundings so when she ran directly into someone, dropping all the sheets on the floor it wasn't exactly a surprise.
"I am so terribly sorry, are you alright?" She held out her hand, wiping a frustrated tear from her eye. Politeness was key.

Eoin was a bit... distracted. His personal life was fantastic right now (though his best friend and roommate seemed to be dealing with a lot of stress, he had acquired a very cute blonde man) but the hospital was tangibly low, and going between the two was giving him whiplash. Not to mention that it ached, just a bit, seeing everyone suffer - the gloom over the place was disheartening to both staff and patients alike.
He did his best, scrawling smily faces on potion labels and doing an extra round of the permanent patients' beds to cheer them up, putting cupcakes out in the pharmacy and painting his nails in bright colours, but one small person couldn't fix an entire building. It was disconcerting, but Eoin was doing his best not to lose hope.
Today he had just come back from taking inventory of a potions cupboard on the first floor and was looking over the list of depleted potions when he ran right into a mountain of sheets. The sheets fell to the floor along with Eoin, revealing one of the Healers underneath, and he noted with sympathy the distressed expression on her face. "I'm so sorry, Healer Prenderghast," he chirped, gaining his feet with her helping hand and offering a kind smile. "Wasn't watching where I was going. Let me help you with these," he added, bending down to scoop up some sheets into pink-nailed hands. Eoin threw the Healer a careful glance, noting that she seemed worn thin - a lot of the Healers were working too many hours on not enough rest - and biting his lip thoughtfully. "Are you doing okay?" he asked, tucking another sheet into his arms. "It's been a rough couple of weeks."

Ophelia cracked a small smile when she saw the person she'd knocked onto the floor. Eoin was a complete and utter sweetheart, though she rarely spoke to him he just seemed to radiate happiness everywhere he went. She was glad it was him and not a disgruntled healer or patient she'd sent flying.
"Thank you so much, dear. And nonsense, I shouldn't have tried to move this lot on my own."
Her voice cracked as she spoke, she barely recognised her tear filled voice. She needed a break. Desperately. She too bent down to scramble up the rest of the sheets, allowing herself a deep breath in and a chance to wipe a few stray tears from her cheeks. She didn't look up as Eoin spoke, unsure of what her expression would give away.
"It certainly has... I'm alright though. There's a roof over my head and food on the table... and I'm sure this will all blow over soon."
She wasn't sure who she was trying to convince, Eoin or herself but she was pretty certain she wasn't convincing either.
"I am worn out- but then everyone is."
She managed to swallow some of her pride to admit that. She stood, shaking out the sheet she grabbed and pulling her wand out from behind her ear.
"How are you doing?"
Ophelia was slightly shocked that he'd managed to stay so chipper with everyone else in a similar state to herself.

Eoin was only a little bit proud to note that his presence prompted a smile, and he smiled back, good-natured as always. Scooping up sheets with a neat hand, he dismissed the thanks with an easy wave of his hand, then looked up a bit quickly as Ophelia's voice cracked. She was desperately grabbing at her composure, and Eoin bit his lip thoughtfully as he shook out a pillowcase. "That's always a good thing," he agreed, gaze flickering up at the former Ravenclaw. "It's hard to keep positive, but we have to try." His smile was soft, an invitation to talk if she wanted to, as he tried to fold a fitted sheet.
"How long have your shifts been?" he asked casually, sticking his tongue out of the corner of his mouth absently as he concentrated on a sheet. He looked up again, brow furrowed. "And how are your kids doing?" Eoin shrugged at the question. "The pharmacy's still intact," he grinned.

Ophelia froze momentarily when Eoin asked how long her shifts had been. Truthfully, she didn't really know. Most days blurred into one these days, she tried to think of when she'd gone home the night before.
"I'd say anywhere between 12 and 18 hours... Others have it much worse."
She quickly charmed the sheet to fold on its own, picking up another to fold manually. At his next question, Ophelia's face fell. Her kids. She missed them. She'd had a day off with Imogen not to long ago, but she hadn't seen Robin properly in weeks.
"They're with my dad. They're doing well, but they miss me being home."
She didn't want to divulge any more information, like how Robin was very ill or how Imogen has begged for her to come home, that was her burden to bear. She didn't want pity, she just wanted to do her job. And do it well.
She gave him a look of concern when the only thing he said was the pharmacy was still in tact, though she could understand Eoin not wanting to get into the gory details. She decided not to pry and instead turned her attention back to the sheets.
"Any new gossip? Keep me young."
She said giving him a tired but genuine smile. She didn't know much about people's personal lives at the hospital, only really what Ashley or Mali told her.

Eoin had long suspected that the reason St. Mungo's was run so well was because it was staffed by kind-hearted workaholics, and this suspicion was confirmed by Ophelia's momentary guilty expression at his question. He wasn't quite that way, certainly no Ophelia or Ashley or Malfoy, because Eoin had learned a long time ago about the value of taking care of one's self. He raised an eyebrow at her statements, then furrowed them in concern at her expression.
"Have you ever heard of an air-plane?" he asked offhand, not remembering if Ophelia was muggleborn like himself or no. "They're this big muggle flying device. Anyways, when you get on the plane - I promise I have a point here - they remind you that, if there's an emergency, you have to take care of yourself first before helping someone else, otherwise you're no good to anyone." Eoin shook out a sheet and offered a tentative smile at the blonde. "So take care of yourself, okay?"
At her question of new gossip, Eoin hummed thoughtfully, shooting her a sideways glance. "Let's see. It seems a lot of the staff has dated at one point or another," he started. "Kingsley and Chandler, for one. There's another pair of Healers on Artifact Incidents who keep making out in my potions cupboards, too. Keep having to restock the Dittany they knock off the shelves." he smiled suddenly, cheeks taking on a slightly pink hue. "I even went on a date the other day!" The thought of Tristan was warming - both his heart and his face.
