Post by Minerva McGonagall on Sept 2, 2016 2:34:38 GMT
As the students filed in from the Hogwarts Express, eager and chatty, clad in their Hogwarts robes, Minerva McGonagall looked down on them from her seat at the staff table with an air of fondness. To those who did not know her well, it might not have looked like fondness, but it certainly was - after many, many years at this school the sight of all four Houses taking their seats never failed to inspire a proud feeling in her chest. Some students waved to the dais, where she and the other teachers were all seated, and Minerva nodded at those who greeted her before they moved on to their tables. She, and she suspected (as usual) the students, were likely waiting eagerly for the meal to begin, and the sooner everyone was in order the better.
The first-years started to file in then, looking around the Great Hall with wondrous, wide eyes and nervous expressions. The Great Hall was in fine form tonight, with the sky reflecting stars aplenty, as clear as it would be outside. The candles floated high above, casting light that was a pale imitation of the stars' brilliance upon a table richly laid with fine plates and napkins in the colour of each individual House. Each table had a table runner in House colours, also, and the back end of the Great Hall held the four large House banners, richly coloured and waving slightly as if to proclaim their pride. While the school ran events to promote House unity, the Sorting feast always underlined the individuality of the Houses and their strengths... even though the House Points hourglasses, behind the staff table, were currently empty. All this was taken in by the first-years, who looked slightly overwhelmed as they huddled up near the front of the room where the Sorting Hat was seated on a stool.
Minerva clapped for everyone's attention, once, the sound ringing sharply through the hall, but she didn't have to speak. The hat, as usual, would do that for her. It opened its rip near the brim and burst into song:
The song finished, the room would burst into applause, and then the Sorting began. Minerva watched over it all with a sharp, but kind eye, and once it was all said and done rose to collect the Hat and say a few words to students old and new.
"Welcome, and welcome back," she called, shushing the murmurs with an easy hand. "I know that we are eager to begin the feast, so I shan't keep you any longer. When you have all gorged yourselves on the delights before you-" she waved a hand, and the tables were laden with food (as if ...by...magic...) - "I shall give the start of term announcements. Please, dig in!"
With that, she withdrew to her seat, as the Hall burst into chatter once more.
_____
Welcome to the start of term feast! AS there are no first-years to Sort, we're jumping right into the social portion of the evening. Feel free to react to any of the events of the feast, talk to your House-mates, and eat delicious food. Students MUST be seated with their Houses. Have fun!

So far, his arrival to Hogwarts had been spectacular. The train chugged into the quaint Hogsmeade station and the students filed out. Carriages pulled by large majestic beasts waited to carry their charges up the path to Hogwarts. The bird like horses were unlike anything he'd ever seen, a student passing by called them Threstals. Some students seemed to look through the creatures rather than at them which confused the former auror. Did everyone not see them? How could they miss such tall animals? He climbed into a waiting carriage, quick and graceful for such a heavy frame. He spent his short trip to the castle with his head hanging out of the window like an excited puppy on it's first road trip. There was a series of boats rowing themselves across the lake, ferrying the little first years and one large giant. The castle itself was just as magnificent as the first time he saw it, grand and looming over the lake.
The Great Hall felt warm and friendly and Aje took his place at the staff table, glancing down towards Professor King and Raven before craning his neck to find Elias. When a rickety stool was carried out with an old and dirty looking hat perched on top Aje watched it closely. The large wizard was visibly startled when it began to speak! "Mi ọlọrun!" he exclaimed in a loud whisper, running a large hand over his face in disbelief. "The hat talks! Does it eat too?" They had nothing like that back in Uagadou. His old school held a dear place in his heart, he would not have attended anywhere else but Hogwarts certainly had it's novelty and charm. "Is there anything in this school that does not do something strange?" The hat sorted through students and Aje watched with interest, chin leaning against folded hands. He tried to predict the house as the students sat down, the nervous looking ones rarely were sent to the Gryffindor house.
After the sorting was done the food appeared and the Headmistress directed the Great Hall to eat and conversation filled the room from staff and students alke, reaching a low roar. Aje was very impressed with everything he saw and had a rare unrestrained grin on his face as he reached for a roll.

Amy sat at Gryffindor table and glanced over towards her brother at Ravenclaw and gave him a smile. She always worried if he had friends in his house or if he was happy but he seemed to be. That was good. The Welsh lass was really looking forward to her 4th year in Hogwarts. She couldn’t believe it. She has been 4 years in Hogwarts. It seemed like only yesterday she hugged her crying brother on platform 9 and ¾ and got onto the Hogwarts Express nervously awaiting her first year. And now she was half way through her Hogwarts experience. That was quiet a sobering thought for her in many ways.
With this in mind the young lady watched the nervous little first years enter into the Great Hall for their sorting. She envied them in some ways, at the start of their Hogwarts experience, with so many new things to learn and discovery. The horrors of flying, the joys of potion brewing, the exploration of Hogwarts and the general experience of magic as a whole. She supposed that she was still learning new and exciting things as well s it was all good.
The 14 year old looked at the sorting hat started it’s song. Every year it was something a bit different and she enjoyed this year’s song as she did every other. She was especially happy with the description of Hufflepuff. The 14 year old felt that they got a bad rap despite how good she felt that the House actually was. She clapped as the hat finished it’s song and then watched as the nervous little first years made their way forward to get sorted. The young lass cheered and clapped when a student got sorted into Gryffindor House. It was great to see new members of the House and she would obviously do her bit to help the youngsters settle into their new home. It was always nerve wrecking the first time away from home and settling into an unfamiliar place with a lot of older children.
The young Welsh witch dug into the feast before her however. It was the highlight of the year in many ways. She got some sausages, pumpkin pie, mash potato, stuffing, eggs and some other stuff on her plate before pouring herself some pumpkin juice. Taking a sip she looked around the house at faces familiar and not so familiar. This will be a good year she thought to herself.

It was a start of another school year and Donnie was feeling excited especially since this year he would be able to go to Hogsmeade this year. The 13 year old was really looking to his adventures in the next school year, not just discovering Hogsmeade but learning new skills and magic. It was always something that excited the Ravenclaw lad. Another thing that the youngster was looking forward to was quidditch. He was going to try out for the quidditch team this year. The young boy was really hopeful to become the seeker of the Ravenclaw team. He knew he had the skills to pull it off.
The Ravenclaw lad sat at his house table and looked across to his sister who was looking towards him. Donnie gave her a small polite smile to his sibling but he wasn’t sure that she seen him. Not that it mattered to the 13 year old much though. He had spent most of the day with his sibling on the Hogwarts Express and now had to look forward to the feast. He was very hungry.
Donnie looked at the nervous first years as they came in and hoped he gave them what he hoped was a friendly and encouraging smile. The young lad turned his attention to the sorting hat when it began it’s new song for the new school year. He supposed that the hat had an entire year to think up a new song and that probably what it did to keep itself occupied when it wasn’t being worn by little first years to find out where they be calling home for the next seven years.
Donald dutifully broke into applause once it finished singing. The song was as interesting as ever. The young Welsh wizard than watched as, one by one, the 1st years made their way nervously towards the sorting hat and cheered and applauded whenever someone got sorted into Ravenclaw house. The best house in the school in Don’s honest, and bias, opinion.
With being quiet hungry his eyes lit up a bit more as the feast appeared before him. He piled up the food on his plate and poured himself some pumpkin juice and took a sip. He then turned to a housemate and asked ”How was your holidays? Looking forward to the new school year?”

Lucien was pleased that they had finally arrived at Hogwarts. Wearing his Healer's uniform, he sat next to Corey King as they waited for the students to arrived. The Headmistress gave her opening speech, the Hat sang its song, the Sorting came and went, and dinner began. He turned to smiled at Odili's reaction but remained politely smiling. He knew that other schools did not have the same way of sorting its students like them. "We have a good number of students this year, don't we, Professor?" Lucien asked King as he began to place a few things on his plate. He looked over the many heads of the students and saw a few familiar ones, faces of the siblings of former peers and some of those who he took under his wings during his sixth and seventh year.

Finally! It was finally September 1st. The summer months were an agonizingly slow crawl towards this date. One would think any teenage girl would enjoy a break from school but it wasn't just a break from Hogwarts, it was a break from magic. There were no wizards or witches in her small coastal town and her family didn't travel very much. All summer and the Gryffindor only made it to Diagon Alley once and in her opinion the trip had been entirely too short. With what news the Daily Prophet brought she supposed it was a lucky streak that she missed the back to school event. Some of her friends hadn't been so lucky.
That was all the past now, she was back at Hogwarts! Back to witches and wizards and magical beasts, back to goblins and ghosts and magical feasts! Nothing compared to the Hogwarts welcoming feast where you could feel the excitement floating through the air. Jas was, as always, seated at the Gryffindor table, fiddling with unruly locks. They never seemed to lay quite right. It seemed they a slew of new faces at the staff table and Jas couldn't be more thrilled with one of them. As a rabid quidditch fan she recognized the face of the large dark wizard immediately, leaning over to whoever was closest to her after the headmistress dismissed them to their dinner. Tapping them on the shoulder she whispered "Blimey! You know who that is?" her excitement was barely contained as she pointed towards the staff table. "Aje Odili! He used to play for Puddlemere! You think he's here for Quidditch?" That would be too perfect. First famous Ginny Weasley refereed their matches and now another famous Quidditch face was at the castle.
Jas was practically beaming when she straightened up and busied herself with filling her plate. Even if he wasn't there for Quidditch, this season was going to be top notch. Gryffindor was going to kick everyone elses arses on the pitch.

As promised, Corey reserved the seat next to him at the Feast for Hogwarts' new Healer, @iamsophie. The man had done an excellent job taking care of Rosemary after their run in with the dementors, and Corey was going to do everything in his power to make the man feel welcome in his new home. He had the same mission for all the new staff members this year, of course, Corey was just a friendly bloke. He watched with a wide grin as his new friends from the train, Aje and Raven, reacted (and in the case of Aje, reacted adorably) to the famed Sorting Hat and his even more famous song. Corey made sure to clap and cheer loudly every time a first year was placed in Gryffindor, as was his tradition. And when the sorting was done with, his attention finally turned to their revered Headmistress. He held an expression of utter fondness as she gave her short pre-Feast remarks, and then there was food in his face and Corey dove in headfirst. All the joy of the first day back at Hogwarts always made him ravenous.
Corey was in the midst of pouring some pumpkin juice for himself when Lucien spoke to him. Corey grinned and nodded, setting the pitcher down to cast a proud look out at the Great Hall. Filled to the brim, it was. "I know, isn't it exciting?" Ever since the end of the war, Hogwarts had slowly built back up to its full potential. During those dark years, there weren't many students to begin with - and many of them were lost in the Battle of Hogwarts. But they rebuilt, and the children returned, and it became home again. Corey was overjoyed to see so many happy, smiling faces. "Lots of work for you, though, I reckon. Especially these first couple of days back - the staircases always prove troublesome to navigate for the newcomers." Corey, even after many years, could well remember his own tumble down the stairs the second day of his first year. To this day he blamed his short legs, which honestly had not grown much since then; he just got better used to the stairs.

Lucien held his chuckle when he saw the stunned and surprised reactions of not only the new students but also the new staff that weren't originally from Britain. It was not a surprise really since it was a sure fact that other magical schools all over the world didn't sort its students the way Hogwarts did. One look and Lucien knew that Corey King himself too tried to keep his reactions as warm and friendly as he could. Then the man reminded him about his soon too be tasks when classes do begin the next day. Lucien groaned. "I hope the prefects remind the first years about the stairs at least before they lead them to breakfast in the morning. I have no doubt that Ravenclaw would remind its first years and even the seconds year as a pre-caution. Maybe even the Slytherin would do it as well. But I highly doubt the Hufflepuff and Gryffindor would. Probably the excitement of the first day might make them forget... but I'm still hoping." Lucien said as he cut his lamb and ate a cut of it along with mashed potatoes and gravy.

When her plate was piled full, Jas did tuck in, starting with a heaping spoon of potatoes. With her mouth full she was finally quiet enough to listen to the others as they chattered around her. There were stories floating all up and down the table regarding recent events, some of the tales sounded embellished at best, completely false at worst (Student fighting off a werewolf singlehandedly? Right then...) but the ones that were genuine caught her interest. As much as she missed magic it sounded like a lucky to have missed it. Dementors sounded chilling and werewolves were awful. Well, awful on that one night. Most werewolves were probably pretty alright on all the others.
Jas took a thoughtful bite of roast chicken before turning her attention away from the gossip and back towards the staff table. This time she didn't focus right in on former quidditch player (though she was definitely going to hunt him down and get his autograph later and hopefully some tips but there were other new faces to investigate. A nervous looking woman with dark brown hair. A man with a scarred face. Jas turned her head again, ears picking up the name 'Remus Lupin' and the phrase 'war hero'.. Interesting, that must be him, considering his face. War heroes wore scars. There was a man next to Professor King, he was new too.
The sixth year picked idly at a roll, propping her chin up on her palm. Jas was eager to get to the announcement section of the night, maybe there would be something regarding quidditch. Winters was captain, surely she wouldn't steer the team wrong!

Amy was startled when Jasmine Watson tapped her on the shoulder. She looked over towards her housemate as she whispered in some excitement. The 6th year asked Amy if she knew who the person she was pointing to was and, while he did look vaguely familiar, she didn’t really know. But whoever it was, he was clearly causing some excitement. When her fellow Gryffindor revealed his name it didn’t really ring any bells for Amy. The 14 year old did roll her eyes when Jasmine mentioned he was an ex-quidditch player ”Should’ve known...” she said more to herself than her housemate. Amy was not a quidditch fan. Her brother may enjoy it but she found it rather pointless and boring. Still maybe his fanaticism for quidditch was rubbing off on the 4th year seeing as she found....Aje was it?...familiar. ”...I am not a quidditch fan but I can imagine he might be teaching flying or the quidditch coach maybe?” the Welsh girl said with a small shrug. She glanced over towards her brother. He hadn’t seen Aje yet. Being a good big sister and feeling in a good mood she tried to get Don’s attention and indicate with her eyes and discreet hand gestures towards Aje. It took a bit longer than Amy would have like but her sibling eventually got the point and she turned back to her meal happily. ”Sorry....” she said to Jasmine ”...on the other hand my little brother loves quidditch and I was trying to make sure that he knew that....Aje was it? was sitting over there.” Amy gave the 6th year a small smile. ”He is a Ravenclaw, a total nerd and wants to get onto the Ravenclaw quidditch team his year.” the Welsh witch said idly. While eating a sausage. ”Might make it difficult to know who to back when Ravenclaw play Gryffindor mind.” the 14 year old said in a slight mischievous tone in her voice. Although she supposed she didn’t enjoy quidditch enough for it to make a big difference if she cheered Donald....but then again house pride. She mused on this a bit thoughtfully in her own mind.

There was a lot to be said for the start of term feast. Barring Christmas, some of the best food of the whole school year was served the first day. Not to mention it was fantastic being back at the magical school. Madison waited impatiently through the sorting, hooting and hollering with the rest of Gryffindor every time the Sorting Hat called out their house. But finally it was over and the food appeared.
Madison dug in like a starving woman. Once she had a full plate, she elbowed @liza beside her. “So head girl and Quidditch captain! How’s it feel?” Madison was bursting with pride for her best friend. Liza most definitely deserved both honors. She was a great friend and role model and completely devastating on a broom. With her at the helm, the Quidditch Cup was practically in Gryffindor’s hands already. Although the House Cup might be a lost cause if the rest of the year went anything like the first day. Now that there was food though, the smoke bombs on the train seemed more or less forgotten.
There were several new staff members at the table this year, and Madison surveyed them curiously as she took a bite of her drumstick. One scarred face in particular held her attention. “What do you know about the new DADA professor?” she asked in a low voice. She didn’t really want this particular question overheard. “I heard he’s a werewolf. Why would McGonagall let someone like that teach?” Madison hadn’t really given much thought to creature prejudice until just a few weeks ago, but now the subject of werewolves had become quite a touchy one.

Hogwarts was every bit as magnificent as the stories. Granted, Raven had snuck up here twice during the summer to try and get better acquainted with it, but seeing it looming brightly out of the darkness was something awe-inspiring. Much like the thestrals pulling the carriages. Raven was in awe of the strange animals, carefully petting one on the nose before climbing in with Corey and Lucien. She couldn’t quite explain it, but she felt some odd sense of kinship with the creatures. Aje opted to take the boats to the castle with the first years. Raven very nearly went with him before deciding she would rather stick with someone who knew where they were going just to be sure. Besides, Aje could look after himself. The great hall seemed even larger as it filled with students. And the spelled ceiling was glorious. Raven was quite sure she was staring at everything as she slid into the other seat beside Corey King, but she couldn’t stop herself. It was all so incredible. She was beyond proud of her own school, but Hogwarts certainly gave it a run for its money. And then, to top it all off, there was a talking hat. Corey had tried to prepare them on the train, but actually seeing it in action was incredible. Raven’s mouth fell open and she hit Corey lightly on the arm, forgetting for a moment that it wasn’t Jake or Aje seated beside her. “Sorry,” she whispered when she realized what she had done. The sorting was definitely an interesting process. Raven didn’t know enough about the four houses to really predict which students would end up where. How did the hat know? Some kind of crazy magic apparently. But the students clearly took great pride in their houses, cheering and hollering as new members joined their tables. It gave Raven a brief flash of insight into the benefits of the house system. These students were like family to one another. Finally the food appeared. Raven put various morsels on her plate, keen on sampling anything that looked even remotely delicious. Aje actually had a grin on his face further down the table. It seemed he approved of their first night here as well. Lucien and Corey were talking now, and Raven listened quietly as she began to eat. But she couldn’t help joining in as the infamous stairs were mentioned. “Why do they move? It seems like that would just make it harder for everyone to get around.”

The younger girl didn't seem nearly as impressed as Jasmine was with the fact a famous ex Quidditch player was sitting right up by all the other professors. Not everyone was a quidditch fan, some people were just odd. The sixth year shrugged at the girl's speculation. "Dunno. Maybe? I didn't think there was space for that on staff, though." Jas leaned forward, propping her chin up in her palm as she scrutinized the professors as they ate. "There was a Defense position but I think that's the man with the scars. Looks like he's certainly fit for it, doesn't he?" This might have been Professor Lupin's second time as Professor but the first time when she was around. Making a mental note to introduce herself later she scanned the rest of the table.
"So who's that one next to Professor King, I wonder? Dueling maybe? I heard the last professor retired because he'd nearly been blown to bits one too many times. He doesn't strike me as the dueling type though." The Gryffindor straightened up and folded her arms over her chest, lip thoughtfully bitten between her teeth. No, the man speaking to Professor King had some sort of gentleness to him.
While she was trying to theorize everyone's position of employment Westwood was staring off at the Ravenclaw table and acting a bit strange. Jas watched as she caught the attention of a younger looking boy and then the sixth year waved at him and grinned before Amy explained what she was doing. "I don't think it'd be that difficult. House before blood, yeah?" Amused by her own joke she laughed and nudged the younger woman with her elbow. "Gryffindor'll pulverize Ravenclaw, maybe you could give them sympathy cheers."

Cheryl still was in denial at the presence of the badge on her robes. It was not as though she did not deserve it, but it was a pleasant surprise to her. The day can get no better in her idea and she was happily humming as she remembered her ride to the train. She was grinning madly when she came back from Headmistress carriage with a P badge pinned on her robes just below the Gryffindor crest. She was a prefect and it was just so perfect in her eyes. It only prove that she was now standing among the top of her year when it came to academics and felt a certain amount of pride. She idly wondered how her parents might have felt about it, but alas she never had the chance to know. She shook her head and tried to push back the thoughts of her parents who were dead. And instead focused on how her aunt and uncle would react and how her grandmother would boast to others about her. Her eyes glistening with tears as she lowered her head so that no one would see her crying.
Cheryl looked up from her musings when she heard the sorting hat. She was always entranced by the various songs it came up with, and idly wondered if it composed the song the whole year. She can never know that one particular thing and added it to the never ending list of her 'Know it before I complete Hogwarts'. She gave a smile as the sorting hat mentioned the traits of Gryffindor and idly wondered how she ended up in that house. She knew that her sense of justice was quite strong and had to agree that may be it was too much. She turned to her best friend @brenna and said "the brave, the just and true, perfect don't you think? " Cheryl heard Professor McGonagall talking but before she could make out what it was, she saw the food appear in front of them. She quietly tucked into the feast and looked over at the head table. She found that quite a few people were new and turning to Bri she asked, " so what do you think about the new staff? Aren't they more in number this year?"

Cecilia had remained mostly quiet from the moment she got on the train until she arrived. Despite sharing the carriage she rode, she barely spoke to the other people who she had to share with. Since Sebastian had graduated, that was one less person she spoke to during the whole year. Now that she was in her last year, she had more excuses to be in the library and the potion's lab more often... and more reason to be more of a loner than ever before. Cecilia didn't have many friends but then again, she didn't really make an effort to reach other and befriend anyone. It wasn't her personality to be the one to take the first step.
Reaching the Great Hall, Cecilia sat at the last table and pulled out her book, ignoring the Sorting Hat's song and the sorting entirely. It wasn't like it would matter to her who was sorted to where since, again, it wasn't like her to pay attention to such things and take meaning into it.
When the sorting had been over and done, she closed her book as soon as the food had appeared. She took note of the new faces up on the Head Table. Mostly new faces really aside from the Headmistress, the DADA professor (everyone knew the werewolf who was close to The Boy Who Lived), and the grounds keeper. She looked around the table and saw that Caldeira (a sixth year) had gotten the Prefect for the sixth year. She had done well with her classes really, no grades below an Outstanding but she was never given the chance... but then she answered her own question: who would in their right mind give her the Prefect's position? She mentally snickered at the thought and kept eating in silence.
