The spiky haired boy looked over towards his older sister who seemed to be trying to catching his attention, with a number of interesting faces and hand gestures. The 13 year old gave her a bit of a questioning look and waved back at the 6th year Gryffindor girl who waved back at him. The youngster was slightly confused until he seen who she was indicating towards. Was that?.....it....it was! Donald’s jaw dropped and nearly hit the floor.
The 3rd year gawped at the former Qudditch player, Aje Odili. He was clearly in school to teach something but what? He would be sure to take the class with the professor once he found out what he was teaching. Of course Puddlemere was not Donnie’s favourite team. He preferred the Caerphilly catapults. He guessed in part because they were a Welsh team and, of course, he loved the Welsh national team as well as any proud Welsh boy would.
But still having an ex-quidditch player on the teaching staff was amazing. He wondered if he would give autographs? Would it be appropriate for a student to ask a Professor for autographs? It probably would be so. It would probably be something that he would have to sort out when time comes around to it.
Donnie however had to tell someone about this. He looked towards a 7th year girl, @sophie2, ”Hey.... he said politely to her ”...you see who is sitting at the teacher’s table?” he carried on with his lilting Welsh accent ”....only Aje Odili the former quidditch player for Puddlemere!” his voice started to get more excited at the prospect of being taught by him. ”What do you think he is teaching? And do you think he would be willing to give autographs?” the 13 year old looked thoughtfully ”...or quidditch tips?” being given tips from a professional would be amazing. Especially as he wanted to make the House team this year.

Cecilia would not have minded being ignored during dinner. She was used to it. Unfortunately for her, she wasnt the only one looking at the Head table. For some odd reason, the new staff had been far too intriguing that her usual 'stay away from me' aura had not worked since a younger claw had turned his excitement on her. Donald Westwood, she had known the name at least from hearing it a few times within the common rooom. She raised a brow and her stoic facial expression remained cold as usual. "Pray tell why someone like him would wish to teach? Such a gap from being a Quidditch player isnt it? I do wonder if he'll be of any use seeing as gis head used to be inflated with air from all that flying." she commented as she continued her meal, wondering if her cold indifference was enough to keep the boy's excitement away from her now. Cecilia had not wish to be a Hufflepuff head, or worse, a Gryffindor, just because some player wanted to suddenly teach a bunch of students.

Amy was busy trying to get her brother’s attention otherwise she would have joined in with her housemate in examining the Professors from afar. It was always interesting to see Professors old and new on the top table. Seeing what positions had new members of staff , what staff have changed roles and just how the staff looked in general. You could usually gauge a fair bit about what the Professors might actually be like as well and what kind of mood they were in for the day ahead.
A large grin came on Amy’s face when Jasmine said house before blood ”Well...of course” she said nodding in agreement. ”I guess sympathy cheers might be in order....” she glanced back towards her sibling who was now engaging a rather aloof looking older girl in conversation. She vaguely worried if Don would be okay but she couldn’t be handholding her brother forever. The 14 year old turned back to the older Gryffindor lass ”Well...maybe I would get him a sympathy card. ‘Sorry you got hammered by a superior team we can’t all be Gryffindors’ kind of thing” it was the turn of the Welsh witch to laugh at her own joke. ”Are you trying out for the Quidditch team this year?” the 4th year asked more out of politeness than anything else.

The 13 year old shrugged when challenged why someone like him would wish to each. ”I dunno...” he pondered. It was a good point. While it was the quidditch player, he was certain of it, why would he be teaching in Hogwarts instead of playing? Maybe his career had hit the rocks or something? It would not be something that Donnie would ask the Professor about if he ever had a chance.
Donald did detect the disinterest in the older girls voice and wondered if he should continue in conversation with her or just leave her to it. In the end he decided to persevere and carry on the conversation with the 7th year. Besides having a big sister meant that he was use to girls showing indifference towards the things he was saying at times. His sister sometimes had a cold tone in her voice so it was certainly something the youngster was use to. Maybe that influenced his decision to continue regardless.
”You are not a fan of quidditch I take it?” he asked @sophie2. Donnie gathered that from her comment about flying inflating his head. Although the 3rd year did wonder if he was inferring too much from that comment of hers.

When the child has ceased speaking, Cecilia thought that she has managed to silence the child for the rest of the evening meal. Did he not know her? Had the boy not noticed that even her own yearmates avoided her as she was not the typycal seventeen year old like most of the sheep posing as students? Glancing at the child once more, Cecilia could see the brain he had begin to turn upon her question of WHY the man was here.
However, much to her surprise, not tht it was outright (nope, just mentally surprised), the child had spoken to her again and this time, deducted a small insignificant (she would never admit the truth) fact that not many knew. She couldn't help but look at him once more. "And what made you conclude such? I could simply be pointing out a fact that being a Quidditch player does not contribute to the grand scheme of Life as a whole... but I shall humor you; be grantful as I do not humor often. No, I am not a fan as I doo not see it value. It is not a profession that can be done past 40, at stretch, 50. Its neither life extending nor does it make the world progress. It is just a sport that may or may not kill its players at any given moment. When they perish, some will mourn but then they are forgotten after a few years." Cecilia answered, not even bothering to choose her words to shield the boy. Better he see the world for what it truly was earlier rather than later.

Bat looked around the Great Hall with wide eyes, smile stretching broadly across his face. The ceiling, as always, was magnificent- the decorations no less so. Hogwarts was certainly magical, he mused as he took a seat across from a 3rd year boy and smiled at his Housemates. There was really no other word for what the castle stood for. The Sorting Hat broke into song, and the person on his right side cheered, jostling Bat's arm and sending his glasses flying. Unfortunately, that rendered him blind as his animal namesake, and he spent most of the song not listening, but patting the table and hoping he could find his glasses before a pie materialized on top of them. Finally, when he did, the song was over and people started to chatter. Bat devoted himself to serving food, picking food that reminded him of home, and was happily tucking in when the third year piped up about the staff table. He spun, brow furrowed, and looked- he wasn't a Quidditch fan but certainly appreciated watching the sport- and when he turned back, the boy was being given a tongue lashing from a girl nearby. Bat frowned. He knew that some of his Housemates were eccentric - this girl, Cecilia, was certainly one of them - but that didn't mean they had to be mean. Bat scooted in closer to the two. " Keep an open mind," he suggested lightly, giving a wide, guileless smile. " There's no need to dismiss someone's passions just because they aren't yours. I'm sure you have passions that other people don't like." Bat shared a look with the boy- was it Donald? He should start figuring that out, if he was a Prefect now- and then added, " 'Sides, can't hurt to imagine!" With that done, Bat leaned in towards the younger boy, adjusting his glasses on his nose so they didn't fall into a dish of beets. " Do you play?" he asked, leaving the option for the girl get back to her solitude, if that was what she would prefer. ________ Donald Westwood, @sophie2

Olivia had heard the first feast of the year speech so many times that she mostly just drowned it all out as their headmistress spoke. She didn't pay much attention to the sorting, although she did clap along when appropriate. She was just eager to get to the food part of the evening. She did this every year, spent too much time on the train catching up with her friends and not grabbing a bite of the trolley. Then by the time dinner came around she was starving. The first night was always the longest because they had to go over the rules, do the sorting, and introduce the new professors if there were any. By the time she was finally able to tuck in, her belly felt like it was eating itself.
"Finally," She said to no one in particular. Although those around her had probably heard her stomach growling in impatience. She dug into the chicken first as the smell hit her nose and demanded to be eaten. She had every intention to pig out tonight and lay in a happy food coma in her familiar old four poster bed tonight. "So, did you enjoy your summer?" She asked the people around her, her housemates that would be her family for the next several months.

Cecilia narrowed her eyes when Bartholomew Caldeira decided to interrupt the conversation. She would have been glad if it was to take the boy off her hands but his first words were directed at her. She raised a brow when he told her to keep an open mind and that she was 'dismissing' someone else's passion. "As ill of a trait for a Prefect to interrupt someone else's conversation, I wasn't dismissing HIS passion. I was agreeing with HIS fact that I am no fan of the sport as I do not see its value. Before that, I was asking him HOW he even came to the conclusion before agreeing with his fact, Prefect Caldeira." She said, coldly yet stoic as she moved to turn back to her dinner when the insolent prefect turned his attention to the kid. Now that Donald Westwood had someone to speak with, it would make him stop talking to her... hopefully.

Karina settled herself down for the start of term feast at the head table. It was a different feeling to be seated where she was and she only had a memory of sitting down at the Ravenclaw table while she was a student herself. It's been 27 years since she last roamed around these halls and it was a bit surreal to her. But she knew that her decision of coming back to teach at Hogwarts was a nice one. She could see her twin daughters smiling at her encouragingly. She gave a smile in return and gestured for them to pay attention to their surroundings. She at first was a little hesitant to join the staff as her two daughters were still at school and still had two years. But the twins pacified her and assured her that they would not feel bad. She still had her doubts about it but pushed it to the back of her mind as she listened to the others talk around her.
Karina listened as the sorting hat burst into a song and settled back in her chair. The moment Minerva has announced the start of the dinner the noise level increased a thousand times. She held a slight smile as she began to eat her food and occasionally she would look upon her daughters.

Every year for the past five years of her life, Liza had sat at the Gryffindor table watching the first years being sorted. The year before that, she had been one of the terrified eleven year olds, staring up at the floating candles and bewitching, realistic night sky where the roof should have been. This year, she sat at Gryffindor table for the last time. She watched the sorting for the last time. Listened to the hat's song for the last time. And for the first time, she sat at the Hogwarts welcome feast as both Head Girl and Quidditch Captain. She was shocked that she had received both. She had half expected Wolf, idiot though he may be, to get Quidditch captain, and she was certain there were loads of others much more suited to the role of Head Girl than her. But nevertheless, she had received both titles, and once again she felt a rush of gratitude towards the headmistress. As the sorting progressed, Liza hollered and whooped alongside Madi and her other fellow Gryffindors each time a new firstie joined their table - once again fully aware that it would be her last time doing so. When the sorting was over, Minnie (Elizabeth idly wondered who on earth had given the woman that nickname) let them eat, and Madison Kingsley , beside her, dove in like it was her last meal. Elizabeth, finally torn out of her nostalgic phase, grinned, and began to pour food onto her own plate. While she was thin, she had an appetite that could rival most. Onto her plate went four potatoes, five lamb chops, three bread rolls, a bowl of soup, a pile of wedges, an assortment of vegetables, two sausages and a bit of roast chicken. If she was being honest, she only stopped there because there was no room left on her plate. As she began her meal, Madi began the conversation. "Amazing," Liza replied after swallowing a mouthful of potatoes. "I didn't expect either. I thought Wolf" -she nodded her head in the general direction of the arrogant seventh year- "wold get captain. And there are so many people better suited to Head Girl. I'm worried. What if I screw up or something? And captain - what if I'm not good at it? What if we lose because of me? I want Gryffindor to win, and if we don't you'll all blame me." Liza wasn't usually one to complain, but she was genuinely worried that she would lead Gryffindor to failure. She had been certain that Wolf would get Captain, and totally hadn't prepared herself for it. "And did you hear Minnie's gonna make everyone try out this year?" She asked. "I mean, not me obviously. But you, and Wolf and Jasmine and everyone else. It's stupid. They should only hold tryouts for the places we need. Jasmine's an amazing keeper, there's no way we're getting rid of her. And you and Wolf, much as I hate to give him any praise whatsoever, make the best beating team." She smiled at her friend. She was fully confident in Madi, and her friend was an excellent beater. "The full team try-outs are kinda redundant, in my opinion." What was the point if she was simply going to reinstate the amazing team from last year, plus one or two for the departing seventh years. Liza paused at Madi's question, not really wanting to answer. She trusted the headmistress to keep them safe, and she was adamantly against the discrimination against werewolves. But her friend had been attacked by one, and how could Liza promise safety when the girl had already witnessed exactly how unsafe werewolves could be? "I—" Liza took bite out of a sausage. "I– I dunno. I reckon that Minnie wouldn't have hired him if he was dangerous. Maybe he's got it under control? Maybe he's safe - docile." Liza grinned, reaching very hard for an attempt at a joke. "Really. McGonagall'd never put the students at risk." Would she? Liza wondered at the back of her mind, but she pushed the thought away. She had faith in the headmistress. She couldn't start doubting Hogwarts as well as the Ministry, or she'd never be able to trust anyone.

“Oh, please,” Madi said, rolling her eyes as she swallowed a bite of chicken. “You’re the best there is for Head Girl. And captain.” She glanced down the table to be sure Wolf was too far away to hear her. Being friends with both seventh years got a little tricky sometimes, but Madi had managed it pretty well so far. “Wolf may be great with a beater’s bat, but I doubt he could keep a whole team in line. Which you definitely can. Besides, you’re the best seeker here. If you catch the snitch fast enough, the rest of us could fall off our brooms and still win. We’ve got the cup for sure.” Granted, they said that every year. But Madison was determine to make it come true this year. She grinned at Liza as a mischievous twinkle entered her eye. “Don’t worry. If you start looking bad, I’ll be sure to cause extra trouble. You’ll look like an angel by comparison.” It was a little ironic really that the girls could be such good friends with Liza’s prefect career and Madison being a born prankster. But somehow it just worked.
Talk of tryouts made Madison roll her eyes, although she grinned when Liza complimented the beater duo. “We are pretty great, aren’t we?” She took a drink of pumpkin juice before adding on to Liza’s analysis. “Plus you’re amazing as seeker, and Mikko and Cheryl are both great with the quaffle. There’s literally no point. We all know we’re all going to make the team again. We just need to fill the open chaser spot and we’re golden.” Most of the time Madi fully supported Minnie McG, as many of the students fondly called her (only behind her back, of course). But there were definitely times when the headmistress’ judgment didn’t seem to make any sense.
Times like right now. Madi picked at a potato with her fork and made a noncommittal noise as she watched the scarred face up at the staff table. Liza seemed to think Minnie knew what she was doing, and a few short weeks ago, that probably would’ve been more than good enough for Madison. But after the attack in Godric’s Hollow… She rolled her shoulder unconsciously as if testing the pull of an injury that was now all but healed. Liza’s joke fell utterly flat. “The ones in Godric’s Hollow were ‘docile’ too,” Madison pointed out as she returned her attention to the potato her fork was still idly poking. The Prophet said they had been on wolfsbane potion. That meant they had attacked of their own free will. What sort of people did that? And what the hell was one of them doing at a school? “Somebody on the train said he and Minnie are friends. Isn’t that like a conflict of interest?” It certainly sounded like one. Maybe the headmistress’ loyalty had just blinded her to his faults. That had to be it. She wouldn’t just up and let a terror teach at the school. Would she?

Don couldn’t help but wonder if he somehow offended the older girl with his conclusion. It did seem like a perfectly logical explanation to her comments and her apparent contempt for quidditch players. ”Well...it was just the way you talked about the player. Saying that all the flying must have inflated his head. I am not sure that a quidditch fan would not have used quiet those words...” he said slightly meekly. He was over analysing what the girl said? Perhaps he should apologise to her? Still her words seem to indicate he was right. The 13 year old was preparing to both defend his explanation as to why he thought that and go on to a probably apology fit as his sister called them when his housemate decided to confirm what he deduced. The youngster was slightly taken aback by her response about why she didn’t like it. The 7th year lass gave a rather comprehensive, no holds barred, response as to why she didn’t enjoy the sport. The 13 year old thought briefly and opened his mouth to give a retort to Ceilla when another older boy intervened. Donnie looked at Bartholomew Caldeira as he spoke urging the girl to keep an open mind. @sophie2 didn’t seem too happy with Bat when he interrupted, probably at the suggest that she was not open minded. In the 3rd year’s opinion that was one of the most provocative things that could be said of a Ravenclaw. The young lad chewed his lip slightly hoping that a fight would not break out between the pair. However it seemed save. The Welsh wizard turned his attention to the prefect, deciding it was probably best to leave the 7th year to her own devices for the time being. Although he did make a mental note to try to talk to her again later. She did seem...interesting in a way. ”I do play. I am going to try out for the Ravenclaw team this year...” he said rather excitedly with his south Wales valleys accent shining through very much. ”....I am hoping to be the team’s seeker.” he concluded , his voice still lilting lyrically as he spoke. ”How about you? Do you play?” he asked the 6th year rather eagerly. Donald was very glad to have someone to talk to who actually wanted to listen to him.

Liza shook her head to Madi's compliment, but added a grinning "Thanks," directed at her friend. Madi's support meant a lot, even if Liza did have the vaguest idea that she was being silly about all this. She knew she would be fine. And Madi's comment about her being better suited to captain than Wolf widened her grin - now there was a compliment that meant something. And Madi finished off her compelling little speech with a joke - or at least, Liza hoped it was a joke, though it was highly likely that Madi was being serious. "Cause all the trouble you like, Mads," she said. "Just don't do anything too bad in front of me. And not during practice. But otherwise, you have my blessing. I'd be happy to assist you in pranking a certain arrogant beater. Nothing too big, but the bloody idiot deserves to be knocked down a few pegs." Liza, not for the first time, wondered how on earth she and Madi were so close. She was a prefect - scratch that, she was head girl, and while she could let loose and have a bit of fun, Madi was a born trouble-maker - and she was friends with Wolf, the arrogant bastard who thought he was a king. A while ago, Liza might have held her tongue when speaking about someone else's friend, but Madi was used to it by now (Merlin help her if she wasn't), and Liza didn't bother censoring her annoyance at Wolf. "Oh man, we're going to crush the other teams," Liza grinned. "Hope we find a good chaser - although, we could probably go out with just Mikko and Cheryl and win the game regardless. Rodriguez - Seventh year - got Hufflepuff Captain, so we'll have to watch out for them. I don't know how he is at keeping a team together, but he's a darn good flier." It would be fun to have the competition though, and as captain, a bit of rivalry was healthy. She liked Aidan well enough, but that didn't mean they couldn't be adversaries as well as friends. Elizabeth's joke fell flat, and her grin dropped into a look of worry. "Yeah, but they were bad people. If they were on wolfsbane and they attacked, they can't have been your every day average Joe. Those were bad people. And they're not here now. Don't let them ruin Hogwarts this year. Just think about Quidditch and pranking and how many points I'm going to have to take away from you." Liza was understanding, empathetic and a great shoulder to lean on, but she sometimes went under the impression that everything was fixable. It didn't occur to her that maybe the only thing that would help Madi would be time. She was fully convinced that she could make Madi all better with words and a hug. "A conflict of interest?" Elizabeth thought about that. She took her time, taking a piece of bread and chewing it slowly while she did so. Was it a conflict of interest? Was Minnie ignoring the danger that might be involved because he was her friend? Somehow, Liza didn't think that was true. McGonagall always seemed to put the students first - why would she stop now? "I don't think so. She'd never let us get hurt, and if they're friends that means he must be good, because she seems to have an exceptionally good judge of character. I'm pretty sure she had you pegged as a troublemaker the moment you set foot in this castle." Liza was convinced now. McGonagall's friend, and someone had mentioned he was Harry Potter's friend too. He couldn't possibly be anything like the monsters that had attacked Madi. Although she was going to have a hard time convincing Madi of that. Madison Kingsley

Madi raised an eyebrow, doing her best to looked shocked. “Did the head girl just give me permission to cause trouble? Blimey. What is this school coming to?” A grin broke out across her face as her feeble attempt at looking serious finally faltered. They had been friends long enough for Madison to know the drill. Trouble was fine so long as it was discreet. And nobody got hurt. Basically as long as Liza has plausible deniability. The idea of helping one friends gang up on another probably shouldn’t have been as appealing as it was. But loyal as Wolf’s little band of pranksters might be, there was also an understanding that those bonds could be broken in a heartbeat for the thrill of the punchline. “You know I’m in. But you sure you want to start that? He might declare all-out war.” And while Madison might love the idea of an epic prank battle, the rest of the school might not appreciate being collateral.
Liza definitely had a point. Their team was pretty solid. Why even bother trying out for the last chaser position? Although she doubted Minnie would buy into that logic. Something about giving everyone a fair chance. “We could always put Smudge on the team just so the spot’s full.” The idea of the cat hissing angrily at whoever had managed to trap him on a hovering broom was enough to make Madison chuckle. She took a bite of a roll as Liza brought up the Hufflepuff captain. “He is pretty good on a broom. Guess you’ll just have to be better.” She smiled confidently over at Liza, giving her best friend a friendly nudge with her elbow.
All this talk of werewolves was making Madison uncomfortable. But Liza knew just how to salvage the conversation. The thought of Quidditch and pranks definitely lifted Madi’s spirits a bit. The mention of having to take points away even caused her to crack a tiny smile. “Boatloads.” Especially if the incident on the train was any indication. At the rate things were going, Wolf’s little crew was pretty much guaranteed to be in detention before the week was out.
The brief rise in tone didn’t last long. Madi rearranged the insides of her potato a bit more with her fork while Liza thought over her question. The answer that came was probably meant to be satisfying. And maybe a few weeks ago it would’ve been. But right now it did little to calm Madi’s sudden anxiety. She picked up a roll and started tearing off small pieces of bread to give the emotion an outlet. Liza clearly wasn’t going to be shaken out of her usual optimism. And the fact that they didn’t see eye to eye on something that suddenly meant so much to Madison was a little unnerving, to be honest. “Can we talk about something else?” She glanced up toward the staff table and then back at her plate with its growing pile of torn off bits of bread. “What about the other new staff? You heard anything interesting about any of them?”

For Miyu Kisaragi, the whole journey to Hogwarts still felt like an unbelievable roller coaster dream to the eleven-year-old boy: the secret archway that led to Diagon Alley to get his school supplies, to the locomotive ride aboard the gleaming-red Hogwarts Express - not to mention all the wacky wizarding food! He almost got tricked into eating some dubious flavored bean during a dare with the other students in the cabin - thank goodness he didn't, because it was vomit-flavored - but the chocolate frogs! He could care less about the collectible cards - he got some old man named Albus (insert his super-long middle names here) Dumbledore on his first try - but it was a funny feeling to munch on his favorite food that still squirm in his mouth even after he bit the head off. According to the students, that was the right way of eating this thing - to prevent it from hopping away before you could savor on it, of course. Then the first-years went on their separate ways from the older students - it was a tradition for new students to reach the school via a boat ride across the lake, where there was a brief scare of someone who nearly fell into the dark water because some idiot had tugged on a giant squid's tentacle too hard. After which, they were ushered to the Great Hall for the Sorting Ceremony... which was nothing ridiculous as what those first-years who had some wizarding knowledge had claimed. A bunch of puny kids trying to fight a freaking mountain troll when none of them knew how to cast a proper spell yet? Who were they kidding? All Miyu could glimpse was an old and frayed pointed hat perched on a three-legged stool, and beyond it was the austere face of the Headmistress of Hogwarts: Minerva McGonagall. At least half of the first years got a fright when the Hat started to sing a song, and after that ended each of them were called out to wear it... Ah, so that was how everyone actually got Sorted to the four houses. Screw the trolls! This is so much easier!Of course, the duration varied from each first-years: sometimes the Hat already screamed the house when it barely touched the head of the student, sometimes it took a full minute or two for the Hat to decide. "Kisaragi, Miyu!" He felt somewhat unnerved when he sat down on the stool, with hundred pairs of eyes from the four long tables boring into his small frame... okay, maybe he should take back the 'easy' part. He couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief when the Hat slid over his eyes, obstructing his sight of the Hall, throwing his view into darkness. "Ooooh, interesting... Very interesting indeed," the Hat spoke into his head. "A mysterious skill foreign to us, but as great as your brilliant mind. Only one house can help you to keep pursuing that unknown, and bring you far beyond your wildest imagination - RAVENCLAW!" ... ... Miyu's initial excitement to meet and greet his new 'friends' was quickly deflated when he was at the table. Sure, he might just be a new blood here in this strange (and awesome - just look at enchanted ceiling above and floating candles around the Hall!) magic school, but even a kid like him could feel the tension among the trio - a brunette teenage girl with her hair kept short, a bespectacled dude who had a badge pinned to the collar of his robes and seemed to be close to the girl's age, and a brown-haired boy who was probably just a year or two older then Miyu himself. He looked around to see if there were other seats away from them, but they were already taken up by the other first-years. ...Eh, this looks bad. It was only his first night at Hogwarts, and he was about to get into a fight with the seniors for nothing. But he wasn't going to stand here the whole night watching everyone else enjoying the Feast! "Um... excuse me," he finally spoke to get their attention. "Do you mind if I sit with you guys? The isn't anywhere else I can squeeze in." He gestured at the rest of the Ravenclaw table. Donald Westwood | @sophie2 | Bartholomew Caldeira
