It was official. The world was going to hell in a hand basket. First the Ministry wanted werewolves to register, and now Meg’s brother was under house arrest for killing someone. The registration alone was enough to terrify Dani. She still hadn’t decided what she was going to do about it. Not registering would put her at risk of jail, but putting her name on the bloody list sounded far too much like a way for the Ministry to get the names of everyone they wanted to dispose of. Dani had studied history. She knew how this ended. First came the registrations, then people started disappearing. She could always run again. Go back to America where at least MACUSA wasn’t trying to round up the werewolves. But that would require leaving Meg, the one person outside Dani’s family who had actually stood by her through all of this, and no matter how many times she started packing, she could never quite bring herself to finish. Especially not now that Theo was in trouble. Which was how Dani came to find herself standing in front of the Ashland house knocking very politely on the door. She wanted to talk to Meg. And not about werewolf registration, although she very much needed to pick her friend’s brain about that at some point. But today Dani wasn’t here to be comforted. She was here to see how Meg was holding up. The older girl had been there for Dani. Time to return the favor. Even if she did feel lousy thanks to the oncoming full moon. Hopefully she didn't look too pale or worn out yet. Meg might know about Dani's little condition, but the rest of her family probably didn't. It wasn’t Meg who opened the door though. It was a very weary looking Theo. Dani paused for a moment, trying to figure out what to say to him. “Hi,” she said awkwardly. “Is Meg around?” The words had barely left her mouth before she quickly added, “Actually, wait. Are you okay?” She winced. “Sorry, stupid question. Of course you’re not. But for what it’s worth… I believe you. About the Imperius Curse. I know you never would’ve done something like that.” She had meant to stop there, but she couldn’t shake the sudden feeling that it was very, very important for her to keep going here. Theo needed to hear this, no matter how hard it was to say. Dani had brought her satchel with her, containing a stash of drawings and pencils to maybe distract Meg, and she shrugged her shoulder to resettle the strap as her nerves began to get the better of her. “I don’t know how much Meg has told you about me. But… I hurt someone. Someone I cared about. I didn’t kill them, but I could’ve.” Merlin, this was hard to talk about. Her hands had begun nervously wringing the strap of her satchel as she made herself keep going. “The thing is… it wasn’t my fault. I couldn’t control what I was doing. It wasn’t the Imperius Curse. It’s complicated. But it wasn’t my fault, what I did. But it felt like it was. And when people found out, they looked at me like it was. Like I was some kind of monster.” She exhaled heavily through her nose. “What I’m trying to say is… I understand. I know what it’s like to do something terrible that you have no control over. To have people judge you for it. I know what it’s like to play it over and over in your head until you start to think that maybe it really was your fault. That you should’ve just fought harder or better or… or something.” She swallowed hard against the rising lump in her throat. “But it wasn’t your fault. And you have to believe that. And if you ever need to talk about it with someone…” She shrugged. “I’ve been told I’m a pretty good listener.” Theo Ashland and then Meg Ashland (OOC - I wanted to do one where Dani can be there for Meg a little bit, and it sort of struck me that she might understand Theo better than pretty much anybody right now. So this happened. Sort of a foil to the Luna thread, I guess.)

How were these people even finding him? Ever since the Prophet announced Theo was on house arrest, he started receiving visits and letters from people he didn't even know. Reporters were mostly the ones showing up on his doorstep - not many, but enough to get under his skin (Theo was trying to make himself not look like an insane murderer, and that was hard when people wouldn't stop ringing your bloody doorbell). The rest came in letters; he got a few more of those, a couple of them Howlers, the others with language vicious enough to near qualify as Howlers. Some weird letters, too - people happy with what he'd done. Those were the first ones Theo tossed in the fireplace - where he soon discovered he got great joy from burning all the bloody letters people were sending him. Theo was perhaps going a bit stir crazy already.
Theo was in the middle of such a burning craze when another knock sounded at his door. The house was, thankfully, empty except for him right at this very moment - the only reason he wasn't shut up in his room to begin with. Everyone else was at work, living their lives, enjoying their freedoms...not that he was bitter. Theo left the stack of letters on the mantel above the fireplace and went to the door when it sounded like the knocking wasn't going to stop. He'd already had one reporter peeking in his windows, and that set his blood boiling for a reason he didn't quite bother to understand.
The face on the other side of the door was familiar to him, though it took a moment for him to place (a moment that stopped the otherwise not-to-pleasant greeting on the tip of his tongue). He'd seen her in his very house before, one of Meg's friends. What was her name again? Didn't matter, she was looking for Meg anyway. Great, was he the bloody butler now? Theo shook his head. "She's been out all day." Thank Merlin. Theo waited for the girl to go - but no. She had questions. Didn't everybody now? Everybody wanted to know, everybody wanted to bestow their needless opinions and advice upon Theo. Even if they weren't reporters they sure sounded like them, and unless they had some solid advice on how to get out of house arrest with no magic, Theo just didn't have the energy for it.
You know, unless said adviser was also a murderer, or near-murderer. The girl - Dani, he thought it was - said she believed him, and that was admittedly very nice to hear from someone who didn't write incredibly creepy letters; he nodded his thanks. She also went on to detail how she too (almost) killed someone and dealt with the aftermath of that. Theo honestly didn't know what to do with this information, and he just stared blankly as she talked. In his weary state, worn out already and very much jaded, he allowed himself to feel the inkling of suspicion at the base of his brain. What would she really want to ally herself with him for? He wasn't exactly the person anyone wanted to sit down and have a chat with right now. She was probably just being nice to him to get information out of him, gain his trust. Meg knew her from work, but that didn't mean she wasn't some freelance reporter or some such. Or maybe she was just poking at his vulnerabilities so it would hit extra hard when she finally decided to tell him what for; she could be a friend of the Longbottoms or the Fischers, how was he to know? Theo had a dying thirst for sympathy but was too jaded already to drink a drop of it.
"That's great." Theo crossed his arms over his chest. "So you almost killed someone, but didn't. And I don't suppose you went to jail for it, did you, else you wouldn't be here. Never been on house arrest? Because it sucks. A lot." He was frustrated and combative, the first nice soul to speak to him since he was forced away from Mali drawing out in him a childlike defensiveness and vulnerability. "It was my fault, and I'll just have to live with it, won't I? What else is there to talk about? Meg should be home soon, you're welcome to wait. Not like I can make you leave." Theo pulled away from the door, leaving it open, and returned to his fire and his stack of letters and the inanity of it all.

Dani wasn’t sure what she was expecting from Theo. Anger maybe? Sadness? But the cold nonchalance designed to dig into her was not it. For a moment Dani just stared at him. She was still staring when Theo walked back into the house, leaving the door open with enough harshness that he might as well have slammed it instead. It was only as Theo reached the fireplace that something inside of Dani finally snapped. Not necessarily because of Theo. She was scared about the new Ministry regulations and frustrated at how society viewed her and it was making her feel very much like an animal caught in a trap. Theo’s barbs were just the icing on the cake. They had set a spark to all of that raw emotional tinder, and suddenly Dani became something Dani very rarely was – angry.
“Boo hoo,” she said coldly, stepping into the house so she could see Theo standing in front of the fire. “You feel sorry for yourself because you’re not being treated fairly? Well guess what? Life isn’t fair. As a matter of fact, I do know a thing or two about house arrest. In fact, I know a hell of a lot more than you ever will.” Maybe not a house arrest enforced by aurors, but she locked herself in her own apartment every month and proceeded to destroy her own body. That was worse than any hell. At least Theo was in his right mind and wasn’t being forced to hurt himself. At least he was trapped in here with his family. That only added more fuel to the fire. Dani was livid now, angrily forging ahead without giving Theo any room to step in. “And you’re right, I didn’t go to jail. But don’t you dare think that means I got off easy. I had to leave my home, leave behind every single person I have ever cared about because it was the only way to protect them from me and what I did. That person I almost killed? It was my little brother. So if you want to talk about having to live with doing something terrible-” She forced herself to stop there before she said something she shouldn’t. Something about how hard it was learning to live with herself as a monster. She took a breath and let it out. When she spoke again, she didn’t sound angry anymore. Just incredibly weary of the world. “You’re not the only person whose life has gone to hell. And as one struggling human being to another, I thought maybe you’d like some help. But clearly you’re doing just fine on your own. So if you want to keep being an ass and throwing yourself a giant, lonely pity party, be my guest. It’s your house. You can do whatever you want. I’ll wait on the porch, thanks.”
It was a good thing her little tirade ended there, because Dani had pretty much burned through all her anger. She stepped out of the house, slamming the front door behind her. Her hands were shaking as she put her back to the wall of the house and slid down it to the ground. She hadn’t meant to yell at Theo. Before too long, she would probably feel awful about it. But right now she was just worn out, both emotionally and physically. Her whole body was already feeling weak thanks to the approaching full moon. There was a growing pain in the back of her head, and Dani put her right elbow on her knees so she could rest her aching forehead against her palm. Maybe this had been a bad idea. Maybe she should just go home and write Meg a letter or something. Clearly she wasn’t as good as helping people as she used to be.

Meg was lucky it was a nice day out, because she couldn't stand to be in her house for a minute longer. She couldn't even stand to be near it, in her gardens, the poor thing. Theo's presence was an oppressive, dark storm cloud that she had no idea what to do with. After the incident with Luna, she felt bad for him. She did. She believed him too, she was pretty sure. But Theo had always been this way - when he got into these moods, he was inconsolable. The best thing she could give him was space. It was just too bad that he was confined to their shared living space, because she really would like to be at home without feeling like she had to walk on eggshells.
Alas, there was sunshine elsewhere, so Meg took advantage of her day off from work and spent it as far away from her house as possible - in the sunshine. She went to the park, and then a nice little garden and museum, then an adorable outdoor market where she was able to purchase both some vegetables and a new pair of earrings shaped like birds. All in all, she was feeling pretty at ease toward the end of her day - and tired. Worn out, she knew she would have to go home eventually. Her last stop before popping home was a little diner, where she picked up a couple of burgers. If she couldn't bribe a smile out of her brother with food, there truly was no hope.
Arms laden with purchases, Meg popped back into existence at the start of the lane that led to her house - just a few more minutes of sunshine couldn't hurt. She sauntered down the path, admiring her gardens and making promises to the flowers that she would be around tomorrow to visit, and eventually reached her home - where she found Dani sitting against the wall with her head in her hands. Meg frowned, hurrying the last few steps to her front door to deposit her packages on the welcome mat before sliding down next to the girl. "Hi, sweetie. What's the matter?"

Dani followed him in. Theo shifted so his back was fully to her, heat from the fire blasting him in the face, because he didn't want her to see any of her words having an effect on him. Who was she? Not the person he wanted there, and he was being totally unfair about it. Dani was just trying to be nice to him, and he was twisting it, probably because in some way he wanted to feel bad. He wanted to be pissed and defensive and brooding because it was easier to just feel than acknowledge any of those things, and definitely easier to just feel instead of looking forward to fix those things - because Theo was scared as hell of what the future held for him. The future was complicated and terrifying. His mind, in survival mode, made out to simplify everything for him in lieu of having another breakdown. Black and white. Good and evil, friend and enemy.
Dani's story made her too complicated. Theo continued to burn his letters, but he listened to every word she said. She was complicated because she was almost exactly like him, and the very last person Theo wanted to be around was himself right now. One of him was enough. Still...some part of him knew he needed to talk about this. That little part was always there, reminding him how incredibly unhealthy his coping mechanisms were - but it was such a small part that it was far too easy to ignore. He would feel and he would hurt and he would eventually get most of the way over it. In a moment of quiet, Theo turned back to Dani to drop an insincere apology on her so she didn't go blabbing about how much of a psychopath he was, and tell her he just wanted to be alone - but she was gone, slamming the door shut behind her. Not leaving though. She was going to wait for Meg, and already Theo knew he had made a terrible mistake. There was no bedroom door strong enough in the world to protect him from her when she found out what he did to her friend. Theo cursed and threw the rest of the letters into the fire, flopping down on a couch and rubbing at his already-aching temples.

Meg’s appearance took Dani by surprise. How did the other woman always manage to sneak up on her? She looked up, shaking her head in answer to Meg’s question. Bad idea. She winced a little as the pain in her head spiked. “Nothing,” Dani insisted, rubbing at her aching temple. “It’s just a headache. I’m fine. Well, I’ll be fine in a few days.” Hopefully Meg would understand what that meant. The pain would disappear with the full moon. Until then, there was little Dani could do but soldier on. She stretched her legs out in front of her in an effort to look a little less like a pitiful ball, although if Meg was looking, she was probably notice Dani’s slightly pale face and the hints of dark circles under her eyes. And while Dani could definitely use a good long chat with Meg about what the hell she was supposed to do about the new werewolf legislation, she wasn’t here to be looked after. Best to distract Meg and move on.
“But that’s not why I’m here. I just wanted to check in. See how you’re doing with… you know. Everything. It’s probably a lot to deal with.” What exactly was she supposed to call it? Theo had been forced to kill someone and now he was under house arrest while the world tried to decide if he was guilty. It wasn’t like there were condolence cards for that. Dani pointed her thumb over her shoulder at the closed front door. “Theo seems like he’s taking it hard. Which makes total sense.” Suddenly realizing it might look like Meg’s brother had banished Dani from the house, she added, “He said I could wait inside, but I told him I’d wait out here. I didn’t want to bother him.” It was a perfectly Dani response, not wanting to bug someone else. Hopefully it wouldn’t make Meg suspicious. And technically it was true. Theo had told Dani (rather coldly) that she could come in, and Dani had insisted (quite loudly) on staying outside. She was just choosing to gloss over some of the details. Meg didn’t need another thing to be upset about, especially not one that put her between her friend and her brother. And Theo… As rude as he had been, part of Dani still felt bad for him now that she had calmed down. Especially since she had yelled. He was just hurt and scared, and he was lashing out because it was too much to handle. Dani understood that all too well. Giving Meg another reason to be upset with him wouldn’t help anything.

Meg got a close look at Dani as she waited for to answer. Now that Meg had a reason to keep up with the cycle of the moon besides some old advice about certain phases being good for certain plants, she knew the full moon was coming up. And after doing some (admittedly brief, Meg didn't have much an attention span for the stuff) reading, she knew her friend would be feeling bad leading up to that day. She felt a bit of guilt hit her in the gut when Dani said she had a headache. With so much going on in her own home, Meg hadn't really had the time to check up on Dani even if she wanted to. "Do you want a potion?" She asked, assuming Theo had not already cleared out his own supply. He'd been doing a lot of the same temple-rubbing as of late.
A little bit to Meg's surprise, Dani was actually here to check on her. Not that Dani wasn't a good friend or kind person or anything...that's just not really the way their relationship went thus far. Meg didn't really have any big problems or issues, thank her lucky stars - until now, she supposed. Dani went into further detail about why she was here, and Meg sighed, leaning her head back against the wall of her house. It was a lot to deal with, but really, Meg didn't feel like she had the right to be the one so upset about it all. She could leave the house, after all. "I'm mostly okay. It's nice to...," she trailed off as Dani explicitly brought up Theo. Oh, no. She glanced over at the other girl, trying to discern if perhaps Theo was the reason for Dani's headache. She was about to ask, but Dani quickly assured her that she was just waiting for Meg outside because she wanted to. Meg wasn't quite sure if she believed her, but she let it go. It didn't seem anything like the day Luna visited - no one was crying or laid out across the floor, as far as Meg could tell - so there was no point in potentially making things worse.
"Well, come on in. I'd appreciate the company." Meg stood up, brushing dirt off her bum and walking back over to the doormat to retrieve her packages. She shook the bag of burgers. "Are you hungry? I got him some food, there's a couple of extras in here."

Even with everything going on in her own life, Meg still found room to be concerned for Dani. The young werewolf shook her head (slowly) as she rubbed her temple. “I already took something. There’s only so much medicine can do.” She pulled her hand away from her aching head and forced a smile, the expression made slightly more genuine by her fondness for her friend. “I’ll be okay, Meg. Honestly.” Well, she would today. The morning after the full moon she was pretty much guaranteed to be a bruised and crying mess. But for now the pain was at a level she could handle.
Especially if she had something else to focus on. Like helping Meg for a change. Dani leaned her head carefully back against the wall of the house, turning it ever so slightly so she had a good view of her friend. “Mostly okay is still partly not okay. And I know there’s nothing I can do to fix that. But I can listen if you want to talk about it.” Just in case Meg had reservations about discussing her own problems with someone she assumed had it worse (a dilemma Dani was all too familiar with), she added with a hint of a quiet smile, “That’s what friends do.” And they were definitely friends now. After the way Meg had handled the werewolf bombshell, there was no way they couldn’t be. Meg had done so much for Dani already. More than she would ever know. And if Dani could repay a little of that debt now, she was more than happy to.
It seemed Meg definitely wanted the company. Good. Dani climbed to her feet as well, albeit slower to avoid aggravating her aching head, and dusted off her own pants. She was actually a little hungry. Dani was the kind of person who could get so sucked into her art that she forgot to eat, so lunch had skipped her mind at some point. But there was the matter of Theo. He might not want to her in his house after she had just yelled at him. And what if he said something to tip Meg off to what had happened before her arrival? Dani wasn’t really sure how Meg would feel about apparently being lied to again, even if it was over something small. Maybe Theo wouldn’t bring it up though. Or maybe he had heard enough of this conversation through the door to not contradict Dani’s version. And in the event they could get past that little snag, eating hamburgers with Meg sounded better than sitting in the park drawing. Dani hesitated briefly, turning all this over in her head, before finally nodding. “A little. You sure you don’t mind?”

Dani was such a blessing today. As much as Meg liked taking care of people, as much as she lived for it, when she was stressed she had to admit that sometimes it could get to be too much. She wanted to be taken care of too, sometimes. Dani seemed to be getting that vibe from her, brushing off any aid Meg tried to offer her - and then reaching out to her, and calling her a friend. Nothing else in the world sounded better than that to Meg right now. Dani was a hard won friend and it made Meg very happy to finally hear the girl call her the same. "I think I do need to talk about it. I just have to work out what to say."
And they could do that over hamburgers. Dani got up and certainly seemed interested in the food, if a little hesitant - which made Meg all the more suspicious if Theo had done anything to her. And that suspicion made her protective, try as she might to just let Dani worry over today instead of the other way around. "Of course not. Let's go inside - I'm starving." She watched the other woman a moment to see if she would hesitate any further, and then walked inside.
There, she found Theo sitting on the couch, running the fireplace and rubbing at his head. That was a look of stress, which made her nervous, but she was determined to keep the peace. "Hey. Food." She walked around the couch and doled out a couple of sandwiches for Theo before taking the bag to another couch and sitting down, patting an open seat for Dani and taking out burgers for them.
