Ron exhaled hard as he slowly paced through the alley, one hand was shoved into the pocket of his jeans and the other holding his wand loosely by his side. Sunlight gleaned off of the shiny auror badge clipped to his hip. Normally when in Diagon Alley Ron's thoughts would drift towards the newst broom at the Quidditch shop or the lovely aroma that wafted over from The Leaky Cauldron but today he was there on officially official Auror business. There was a protest brewing and a clear divide in the crowd. Literally. Each side gathered on either side of the side walk and Ron patrolled down the middle
It was quite a sight and sound, people holding colorful handmade signs only enhanced by magic while multiple people with sonorus charms shouted back and forth at each other using party lines and inflammatory accusations to whip each other into a frenzy. The Pro Ministry side was made up primarily of witches and wizards, a squib or two dotting the crowds while the Anti Ministry side was a menagerie of beings and creatures. Veelas danced (confunding and distracting handfuls of protesters. Ron himself had to steadily look at his feet when he sauntered past), Vampires hid under parasols clad in thick long sleeves, goblins carried signs bigger than they were and even a hag or two shambled through the crowd. The protest started out elsewhere, a gathering of people in front of the Ministry of Magic who only moved down to Diagon when threatened with arrest for violating the statue of secrecy. A few wizards sat up in the DMLE wearing handcuffs for attempting to stage a sit in.
Ron thought about Bill and Lupin. Of Fleur and her family, Hagrid too. It was bloody awful what the Ministry was trying to do to people like them and his heart swelled with pride as he observed the group of good hearted wizards and witches who saw unfairness and oppression and decided they weren't going to stand for it. Instead they decided to make a racket, let the Ministry know that they didn't agree and would not quietly comply with the new regulations. Rebels, the lot of them. Good on them. The ginger haired Auror would have liked to join them today but his duty as an auror had him marching up and down, keeping the peace. So far neither side had started to hurl curses at the other but it was only a matter of time.

Lyra desperately wanted to be among those who marched for the rights of creatures. She wanted to fight for those who were having their rights stolen. It wasn't fair. Did the ministry think that werewolves chose to be bitten? Did they think that Veela and half-veela chose to be born? Vampires, while dangerous, certainly didn't choose to be turned. It was ignorant of the ministry, and Lyra, marching up and down in her Ministry robes, 'keeping the peace' felt almost as though she was betraying the ralliers and the discriminated against creatures.
Some of the marchers shot her dirty looks - and she didn't blame them. She hated the ministry too, at the moment. They had fought to keep the world safe, and keep the ministry from corruption and look where that had gotten them. Some would argue they were heading down the same path again. Lyra didn't want to admit it was that bad just yet. But here were all the people who were preaching it. She was proud of every single one of them. Everyone who had shown to defend the rights of people who couldn't help what they were. She just hoped, for their sake, that they didn't let things get too out of hand. A full on fight in the streets, and spells being fired would only make things worse for werewolves and the like. At the same time, such a rally getting heated seemed almost inevitable.
Out of the corner of her eye, Lyra caught a flash of familiar red hair. Lyra made her way over to him. "Hey, Ron," she said, catching her fellow ginger's attention. "It all seems okay enough for now. How long do you think it'll take for someone to fire a hex at one of us? I mean, we are in ministry robes. I wouldn't exactly blame them." Lyra's eyes scanned the crowd. "I wish I could be marching with them. I feel like I'm betraying someone marching around like... like the bad guy, I guess." She certainly felt like the bd guy, with all the glares she'd been on the receiving end of.

One of the first things that happened on his job was to take note of the rally going on. Garreth, being the person who would much rather stay in a safe and secluded area, felt his insides roil when he was given that task. Whatever happened to paperwork and office desks? No, instead his first was to take note lest there be anyone deciding to go against legal bounds. And by that, he knew there was a possibility of a rally. Internally, he regretted joining in on the Ministry at this hype but how could he have known? He never really had any issues with these creatures. He doesn't even see a problem at all; they're not animals and they definitely deserve rights as equally as them. But he knew he had to keep such thoughts mum unless he wants to be in danger of losing his job. Why the Ministry imposed such things was beyond him. He reviewed the decree and he reviewed the paper and he could name all the loopholes there. Apparating in the area, he managed to note there were already two Aurors there. He sighed outwardly. Carrying his small satchel with papers and fixing his robes, he approached them. He decided it was wise to be near them, just in case. "H-hello," he stuttered over the voices of the rallyists, "My name's Garreth de Montmorency, Paralegal and Muggle Misinformer. I was sent here to uhh observe the rally just in case things go violent," he spoke to them. Ron Weasley @lyra

Lyall stood her ground, clutching her sign in the one hand, swaying slightly under the pressure of the swell of people. She was hot, she was cramped, she was proud. This was her job, this was what she wasmeant to do. To go out, even against her boss, and protect the rights of the creatures. Her heart pounded in her chest as she looked atound, more signs and chants floating round. She was in the right side of the divide, she was with the people she had vowed to protect. Looking around again, ignoring the unhappiness when she caught sight of the patrolling aurors (would her darling have been there, if he were here?) She spotted a familiar face. "Remus! Glad to see you, though perhaps it would be preferable in more amiamble conditions."She thought to the last time - the first time - she had met him. He had come into her office to, in his own roundabout way, question her on the new legislation. She had promised to try and prevent it, and now look where they were. It was awful, and she felt almost guilty that she was still pleased with their meeting. It was selfish that she thought (privately, of course) that just because she made an ally (a friend?) the meeting was a success. Still, she smiled at the right of the werewolf, before scowling at the thought of what the rules would do to him. "You ready to make this count, Remus?" She asked, before preparing her burning throat for another chant. Tags: Remus Lupin

Post by Danielle 'Dani' Carson on Sept 21, 2016 23:16:04 GMT
Truth be told, Dani probably shouldn’t be here. She had done pretty well keeping her condition under wraps so far. But with tempers rising around the country, the smart thing to do was to keep herself as far away from it all as possible. All it would take was one smart person to put the rally together with the days of the month she didn’t work and the questions would begin circling. She couldn’t just stand by and do nothing though. Not when there were people like her on the line. People who were struggling to go about their lives. People who just wanted to be left in peace. Her parents had raised her too well to sit on the sidelines.
So Dani had compromised. She wasn’t out marching or holding signs with the actual protestors. She wasn’t brave enough for that. But she was still in the Alley, standing up against the wall of a shop with other spectators. Her scars were all safely hidden beneath her jeans and the sleeves of her denim jacket. Something about being here though seemed to set them on fire. She could feel every one of them tingling as she watched. There was no masking the concern on her face as she watched in silence, hands holding tightly to the strap of her satchel hanging across her chest. She wanted to be out there with them. With people who supported those like her. Maybe even those who were like her. She could see Remus Lupin in the crowd talking to a woman. Meg had explained to Dani who he was. He might be a war hero, but to Dani he was legendary for another reason. He was like her. A good person who had been dealt the crappiest of hands. Only he had made it work. He had friends. A family. A job. He was everything Dani wanted and wasn’t sure she could ever have. She bit her lip as she watched his face. Part of her wanted to meet him. Talk to him. Ask if there was any advice he could give, anything he could do to help. She had only been turned for a year, after all. She was still new at this. And she could very much use a guide on this terrifying road.
But there were also aurors mingling in the crowd. Almost like they were expecting trouble. That alone was enough to keep her in the shaded safety of the awning over the shop she stood against. If things went south here, she would be safer on the sidelines. Out of the fray where she could escape faster. But that didn’t stop her from watching Mr. Lupin with something akin to longing.

Ron kept a keen eye on both sides of the protest. He hoped that the Creature Rights side would keep it peaceful but he couldn't pretend he wasn't itching to send one of the close minded anti creature sods off to the DMLE for a little bit of legal trouble. It wasn't completely fair of him but anyone who knew Ron would know that he wasn't fair. He was good at heart and liked to do the right thing but the right thing wasn't always the fair thing. Hermione was the fair one, a better person than he could ever hope to be too. Lyra wandered up to him and he gave her a smile and a wave before scratching at the back of his neck, pondering the woman's question.
"Erm.." He started. "I'd give it another twenty minutes or so. They're whipping themselves up right into a frenzy." Blue eyes scanned the Creature Rights side, catching sight of Lupin speaking to some Ministry witch. He nodded at Lyra's comment. If for nothing else, he wanted to be fighting for Lupin's rights. Lupin had done alright by him and his family and he felt a sort of protectiveness for the man. Plus Fleur... She hadn't been too happy about having to submit hair samples and she was good for Bill. Would they want hair from little baby Victorie, too? Over Ron's cold, dead body. "We're here to keep both sides safe. There's no shame in that. We can march in the next one, I'm sure they'll be more. No one's gonna let this go quietly." The ginger haired auror offered his fellow Order member and Auror an encouraging smile. "We're not the bad guys. The bad guy is sitting up in her office at the Ministry trying to figure out how she's gonna get the stick out of her arse."
Another person wandered up, this one looked far too nervous to be out there. He'd seen the bloke around the ministry but wouldn't be able to come up with his name if his chocolate frog collection depended on it. In case things got violent? He chuckled, shaking his head and glancing down. "And what are you gonna do if things get violent? Bore everyone into surrender with legal jargon?" Bloke looked scared enough to take cover behind Lyra if things went south. __________________________________ @garreth @lyra

All of the attention was a little bit uncomfortable, but Remus truly couldn't think of a better cause to get a bit uncomfortable for. Of course he was going to attend the protest. No matter if people stared - on both sides; or yelled - mostly from the side across the street; or whatever else they wanted to try. This was important to him. Not just because he was a creature himself. Remus was pretty confident in his forty years of doing it - he could take care of himself no matter the current opinions of society. Remus was far more worried about those that weren't as heavily blessed as he was. Because while he was able to take care of himself, he certainly wasn't doing it alone - Remus had friends, and family, and happiness and life and all those sorts of things that could keep his head up as the pressure from the Ministry strengthened. Not everyone had that. Not many of them had any of it at all, actually. The legislation was new - the prejudice was not. Those deemed creatures and beings by the Ministry struggled every other day of their lives, the very least Remus could do was be there for them on this particular day, rallying support for their cause. And he was in the thick of it, doing just that. Perhaps Remus got a little caught up in the chanting and marching - perhaps he was in fact drawing most of that uncomfortable attention to himself. But this was important, the most important thing he could be doing right now, he felt. Every little moment mattered. He moved among the crowd, speaking to the other protesters and the numerous faces he recognized, emblazoning their spirits with his support. He was looking for one face in particular - Lyall Santel. They'd planned to meet up at some point today, and Remus was going to make sure that happened. He couldn't have been prouder of the woman. She was putting herself and her job at big risk by showing her support in such a bold way - and there she was, in the middle of the crowd holding a protest sign. Remus smiled and hurried over to her side. "It's good to see you, Lyall. I don't know - this just feels sort of right, doesn't it?" He cast an appreciative look out at the crowd around them before turning back to the woman. She had a question for him that made him smile broadly. "Absolutely." He joined her in the rising chant, attention jumping from one place to the other in all of the excitement - but mostly, he watched the other side of the street. He was disappointed to see faces he recognized there, too, but it didn't make him sad or angry like it used to. He was used to it now, the way some people changed when they found out what you were. He supposed he couldn't blame them for their fear or ignorance, just try to change it. Right now, though, he was mainly watching for anyone that looked like they wanted to get out of hand - and that included his side, too. On top of everything else Remus was an Order member. Darkness still ran steadily through near every vein of society, and he would not be one bit surprised if it chose to rear its ugly head today. So he was cautious, but not exactly fearful - considering who was patrolling up and down the middle of the street, and all. Two Order members, and in their Auror robes at that. Remus was sure there were more among the crowd, too - Aurors and Order. Or both, like his wife. She'd told him she would be out there somewhere today, too.

Post by Addy Stark on Sept 23, 2016 17:02:58 GMT
First an article, then the floodgates, Addy mused with a twist of her painted mouth as she wiggled her way down the street, shooting some truly venomous glares at the creature-fearing side. Not that they could see much of her other than her red, red lips- she had a long-sleeved hoodie on, in an effort to preserve at least some of her image as a Quidditch star (this was mostly for her coach's benefit rather than hers, as she liked Alec and didn't want to see him have an aneurism). There were Aurors patrolling down the middle of the street, and Addy eyed them thoughtfully, neither pleased nor displeased by their presence. As long as they remained unbiased, she couldn't care less - well, unless they arrested her for her poorly thought out plan to tell off the snivelling, frightened masses on the other side of the road.
Addy never had wanted to go into politics, but politics had become personal when her father was murdered for (at least it was starting to look like it) his unwillingness to discriminated between people on grounds of blood status or species. He'd been honourable about it and open, and it had gotten him killed and made Addy very, very angry. Her usual fire for life had been stoked by fury, but investigating her father's death for justice (for closure?) didn't seem to be enough to quench the little flames of injustice that were wreathing up the sides of her lungs. Which was why she was here, ready to speak, or throw things if it came to that.
She'd reached a spot near the carrot-top of a Weasley Auror when a particularly disgusting insult about "half-breeds and filth" assaulted her ears, and sh did an abrupt volte-face towards the offending party, a tall thin woman who looked absolutely smug with her position in life. Addy's eyes narrowed. "The only filth I see is facing me right now," she retorted, feeling anger stoke the flames in her chest. "Why don't you crawl back into the hole you came from? There's no room for intolerant morons like you in decent society."
The woman turned purple with rage, and Addy sneered elegantly at her, red mouth twisting into a vicious shape. She was turning to go when she felt something sharp bash into her shoulder, bouncing off the fabric of her hoodie. Addy looked back to see the shapeless crowd blurring out in front of her, a thousand drooling faces yelling terrible things. She felt incandescent with rage and drew her wand, muttering something inaudible in the swell of the crowd. She was interrupted by another something hitting her cheek, scraping along her bone, and shrieked a wordless cry in response, followed by a spell: her magic shaping itself into unnaturally large tomatoes that she flung towards the offending crowd. So much for words, Addy thought, bracing herself for a return volley. This meant war.

Garreth flinched at the small insult given by 1/3 of the legendary trio. This was not posing well for him at all. He was too fidgety here. After all, he wasn't one built for a fight, he just recently conditioned his locks. "W-well... I also work under the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures," he spoke as he scratched the back of his head. "I'm just here keeping an eye on the rally, really. It wouldn't pose well for these cre--them to be violent. After all, we can settle the manner in a more peaceful and better manner." he smiled at him. He turned and noticed Lyall. "There's my head now," he noticed even from afar that she didn't seem like she was in a good mood. After all, who would be after the Ministry decided to put a stint like this. It was terrible to be working for both departments. Under the Minister herself and under Ms. Santel. If his mother wasn't so persistent on him getting a job, he would have delighted on spending his trust fund on International Relations. But no, he had to do this. Suddenly, he saw the ruckus just a few meters away. Flying tomatoes and other objects and he knew this was the start of something he didn't want to be a part of in person. He ducked right behind Ron Weasley for cover and raced his bag as defense, his other hand clamoring for his wand. Tags: Lyall Santel Ron Weasley

Lyall nodded at Remus, mirroring his appreciative look. "It feels the most right of anything I've done since this mess happened." She told him, before joining him in the chant, their twin voices merging and becoming inseparable from those of the others on their side. She felt a happiness rising in her chest. Finally, she was doing something worthwhile. Finally, she was part of something bigger than herself, something she could proud of. She saw a flash of disappointment on Remus' face, and she knew instinctively what had happened - obviously he'd recognised a face amongst the throbbing crowd opposite them. She could guess how hurtful that must be, knowing that someone who knew him - probably knows what he was - could be so ignorant. He didn't seem angry though, and she felt a swell of admiration. She would never have been able to be so patient with someone like that. Looking around, she wondered if she would recognise anyone on the other side of the road, but she didn't. But she saw sneers, recognised anger and disgust, and realised with a lurch just how hateful people were. She could only pray that the violence and hate that lingered beneath the surface would stay beneath.
She was still chanting though, ignoring any fears, when her eye caught someone she did recognise. Not, thankfully, on the other side of the road, but in the middle. An employee... Garreth! (It took her a moment to place him.) He was with the aurors. She wondered, briefly, whether he was on her side, the right side. Surely he was, working for her department. She tried to catch his eye, give a grin, caught up in the excitement and passion of the rally.
When her ears caught a particularly nasty insult she started, pale faced, knowing it would certainly not go unnoticed. Sure enough, a sharp tongued, hooded woman gave an elegantly worded retort. And then it all kicked off. Fruits flew, wands were drawn and Lyall grabbed Remus' sleeve tightly, almost without noticing. Recovering her wits and her bravery, she turned to face him. "Remus, help me! We've got to block them, try and calm it down. Even if no one's hurt now, there's no way in hell it won't escalate." Drawing her wand, she plunged into the fray, ready to cast shields but knowing she was probably already to late to fix it.

"You're doing great," Remus assured Lyall with a nod before they dissolved into chanting. He didn't think it appropriate to tell her he was proud of her, in those certain words, but he was going to make sure she knew her sacrifices were appreciated. The cause couldn't ask for a better ally in such a position. If it weren't simultaneously so depressing, Remus would have found it amusing how there were so many good individuals working in such a corrupt organization.
The protest seemed to be going well, lots of spirit on both sides, but that was kind of the point. Not a shouting match, exactly, just a chance to be heard. Remus tried to balance his attention, focusing on the cause as well as keeping the peace - but with such high emotions running through the street today, things were bound to happen quicker than he could catch them. A spat of shouting rose up above the usual chants - and then, there were tomatoes.
Remus quieted down with a deep sigh as he watched the fruits fly. At least it wasn't curses, yet, but he knew things were headed that way now. No more peaceful protest. He looked down sharply when someone grabbed him, but it was only Lyall. He laid a hand on her shoulder, to tell her it was alright and they would handle this, but she was ahead of him. He nodded at what she said and was hot on her heels, raising his hands into the air and casting out shield charms on both sides of the fray.
