October 2 - Knockturn Alley Alex finds herself in a tight spot while hunting a vampire and gets some help from an unlikely source.
Alex was pissed. Not only had had father been alive for five whole years without telling her, but now he was working in her damn department. And he wasn’t staying away either. He just kept on finding her, clearly intent on having some kind of conversation. The fact that he hadn’t cracked down on her the way he used to when she gave him too much attitude was just making her even more angry. He was playing nice. And that meant he wanted something. Whatever it was, Alex was determined not to give it. But just seeing his face made her want to punch something. Thankfully she’d caught wind of a vampire leaving bodies in the dark depths of Knockturn Alley, and tonight she was going to make the son of a bitch her punching bag. At least, that had been the plan. Swoop in, get the fight out of her system, and put the monster out of its hellish existence. And things had certainly started out fine. Alex had caught the creature preparing to make a kill and managed to piss it off enough that it let its intended victim go to come after her instead. Fighting she had been prepared for. A wand not so much. It didn’t really matter how the damned thing had gotten hold of one. Stolen off its last meal, probably. But somehow it had, and a few nasty spells and hard knocks later Alex found herself on the ground with the wind knocked out of her and her wand goodness only knew where. And to top it all off there was a vampire pinning her to the cobblestones, its fangs coming ever closer to her neck. She had managed to get one arm up and lodged against the vampire’s throat, but he was pressed too close to give her any serious leverage. And he was damned strong. Her other arm was pinned to the cobblestones, her hand desperately twisting through what was supposed to be a blasting curse to get him off. Instead a dirty window pane exploded nearby. Scheisse! For all her father’s talk about the value of wandless magic, it never seemed to work when Alex needed it. But there was no way in hell she was going out like this. No bloody way. A set of footsteps running their way distracted the vampire for a fraction of a second. Not much at all, especially in the grand scheme of things, but Alex knew how to take advantage of an opportunity. She slammed her head forward into the vampire’s nose, hoping the pain would make him pull back just enough for her to scramble away. Before she could find out, a flash of light shone through the dark alley. And then a spell collided with the vampire, knocking him off of Alex. The Hit Witch rolled away and into a crouch. In the process she jerked a small knife from her boot and turned to hurl it toward the vampire. He howled in rage as the blade struck deep into his shoulder. But apparently two on one wasn’t a fair fight, because the vampire grabbed up the wand he was using and disapparated with a sharp crack. Alex swore loudly in German. Now he would probably find a new feeding ground and she’d have to go back to square one. Son of a bitch. "That was a good knife," she said irritably as she pushed herself to her feet and turned her gaze on the intruder. But the sharp words quickly died on her lips though as she recognized the scarred face staring back at her in the dim moonlight. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.” Of all the people who could have gone and saved her life botched her kill, it just had to be Remus Lupin. Seriously? The world had a sick sense of humor.

If the Ministry was going to legalize and officiate something as debasing as the sanctioned hunting of creatures, Remus thought that gave him all the right in the world to protect himself as he saw fit - legal or not. And teach other creatures to do the same thing, of course, or at least attempt to do so. This was absolutely a personal attack on each and every one of them. It felt that way to Remus, and it felt that way to many others. And he knew what happened when it felt that way for too long. Bitterness was a natural byproduct of oppression. Remus intended to intervene when it was still only just bitterness; when the bitterness was allowed to grow unhinged, it became revenge.
Memories of terrifying nights, infiltrating Voldemort's packs and covens, prompted Remus to try and keep the world from ever going that far into hell again. He wanted to get to the creatures before the Ministry did, of course; but he wanted to get to them before their own anger could, too. Their anger at the world could force them into the very behaviors the Ministry thought them guilty of already, and Remus sought to prevent that. He only had to show them there were actually good people fighting for them - creature rights were becoming a priority in the Order, not surprisingly - and that they could protect themselves and their freedom without lashing out.
As always, easier said than done. Remus was mostly affiliated with werewolves. Those were always the easiest, especially if they knew him. When Remus told them if they could just hang on, better days were coming, a good number of them believed him. Not all of them, of course, but a good number. Other creatures were a bit more difficult. They all faced the same oppression, but rivalries ran deep and ancient between different types of creatures. Remus devoted his nights to vampires, mostly. They were easier in the sense that they at least tried to act decent (same couldn't be said for the hags, unfortunately) and he knew they wouldn't try to eat him because - as he'd been told so very often in the past few weeks - 'mutt blood tasted disgusting'.
There was one vampire in particular already acting out in Knockturn, and Remus was hot on his trail. If he could just get the bloke to talk to him, it wouldn't have to be for long. A short conversation was enough to plant the seeds. Remus twisted through Knockturn, checking every alley and nook, until he found what he was looking for. Unfortunately, it was exactly what he was looking for - a vampire about to make its next meal off some poor sod. Remus let out a disappointed sigh before sending the vampire twirling through the air with a wave of his hand.
Maybe the meal wasn't a complete poor sod. The human - a woman, he saw now - moved fast, tossing something at the vampire that made it howl. And...disappear? Remus couldn't deny he was a bit proud of the bloke for somehow managing to find a wand (it was barbaric to take them away in the first place), but it was also a bit concerning. An angry vampire with a wand was a bit more dangerous, and harder to talk down, than your average angry vampire. Ah, well. He was gone for now, who knows where. In the meantime - his meal needed tending to.
Remus got to her just as she was getting to her feet, and her face stopped him in his tracks. She was no meal. She was the one doing the hunting. Again, Remus sighed. Alex was one of those government-sanctioned 'enforcers' now, he'd heard. It didn't surprise him in the least; but it also made it that much more unpleasant to run into her. "Were you hunting him?" He questioned.

Of all the sons of bitches to find her out here, it just had to be Remus Lupin. Scheisse! Just seeing his face made Alex even angrier than she had already been. He was just so… secure. It made her want to throttle him. Unfortunately, his infuriatingly clean record meant she had absolutely no reason to do so. And the longer she waited for him to slip up, the less likely it appeared. If Alex didn’t know any better, she might think he was actually a good man. But she did know better. He was a werewolf. And no wolf could hide the monster inside forever. Sooner or later it would claw its way out.
The self-righteous tone in his voice wound Alex’s jaw impossibly tighter. “I was saving his dinner,” she said flatly. “Maybe you saw her. Serving girl from the Wyvern? Ran through here screaming and crying about five minutes ago? She would be dead if I hadn’t shown up. So you can wipe that disappointed look off your face. I’m not the killer here.” Mostly because Captain Holier Than Thou over there had seen fit to let her prey escape. (She was far too irritated to acknowledge that he had probably saved her life.)
Alex turned around to look for her fallen wand, but she swung back around with her pointer finger in the air. Her tone was a mix of ice and steel as her bubbling anger began to overflow. “And you know what? I don’t need help. Not from you, not from Ezra, and sure as hell not from my son of a bitch father. So why don’t you go find some other damsel to save?” Not exactly the thank you he had probably been looking for. But Alex wasn’t good at being grateful even on her good days. And this was not a good day. Hell, it wasn’t even a good month. First her father came back to life (she had some vague memory of telling Lupin her father was dead, but she was too pissed off at the moment to bother explaining that one), and now she couldn’t even kill a damn vampire properly. If her father ever found out about this… Let’s just say a disappointed Nicholas never ended well.
She swung her gaze to the grimy floor of the dark alley before she could decide to punch Lupin in his perfectly innocent face. “Where the hell’s my wand?” She had a vague idea of where it had fallen. This would be easier if she could see better, but no way in hell was she asking for help. Not from him. There was a stack of rotting crates, and Alex gave them a good kick both to clear the ground and to relieve a little of her anger. A shaft of moonlight glinted off broken glass gave her just enough light to see what she wanted. She bent down and scooped it up with a muttered curse in German. Dropping her wand had been a potentially fatal mistake. She needed to get her head straight right bloody now or her next target just might get her killed. Of course, that would be a hell of a lot easier if her father would kindly go back to being a rotting corpse in a ditch somewhere.

"But you were going to kill him," Remus said evenly, looking straight at Alex. So the vampire in question had been chased off of two meals now, it seemed. Remus in no way condoned the use of humans as food, for anybody - but he didn't condone killing the problem to solve it, either. The enforcers were committing nothing more than legalized murder, as far as he was concerned. "That's not the way, Alex. Where's the girl?" He made a show of checking up and down the alley for the saved server. "Did you check on her?"
Remus would just go find her himself, darn it, if it meant getting away from this witch. Now that her target had gotten away, the immediate threat was gone, and Remus had no desire to interact with Alex anymore than what he had to do in order to stop her from literally murdering someone. She, on the other hand, apparently still had a lot to say to him. She turned on him with an anger so unwarranted it rooted Remus to the spot in defiance. "I'm not here to save you. I'm here to confront you." Remus crossed his arms over his chest. "The government backing of your terrorism means nothing to me. I won't let you get away with it just because the Ministry's given you a shiny new badge. I want you to leave." The vampire was far gone from this place - but there were bound to be others, and other creatures, and having Alex prowling around behind him wouldn't make his own work any easier.
He was even going to make it easy for her to leave. She was rooting around for something on the ground while he was talking, throwing a tantrum while she was at it. Remus cast a wordless Lumos spell from his hand and allowed the little ball of light to float freely off down the alley, shining some light on its shadowy spots. Remus watched Alex, who eventually came back up with a wand, and waited for her to make her move.

He made it sound so terrible the way he said it. Alex shrugged. “If I had to, yes.” If that was what it took to keep other people safe. His next statement would’ve made her laugh if she hadn’t been so damn pissed. “Oh, because your way is so much more effective. Let’s shower them with hugs and sunshine until they see the error of their ways. Real effective.” And then he brought up the serving girl like he actually gave a damn. Alex shook her head in disbelief. “No, actually. I was a little busy trying not to be her replacement at the buffet.”
Apparently Lupin’s attitude knew no bounds. Alex crossed her arms in defiance, an incredulous look on her face. “Wow. Aren’t you feeling mighty up there on your high horse. Careful. You might fall off.” And then he was prattling on about Ministry legislation and it didn’t give them the right. Well, Alex didn’t need a bloody law to give her permission. “Oh, because you’re such an angel. Remus Lupin, the mighty war hero. Made it through two wars without hurting or killing a single soul.” Her voice was practically dripping with disdain. “You’re a bloody hypocrite. When you and yours decide to wage war to protect people, you get a bloody medal. But I do the same thing and somehow I’m the bad guy.” She held up her hands and let them drop. “You know what? I don’t care. If it takes getting my hands dirty to keep people safe, then so be it.” Alex had no illusions about being a good person. There was blood on her hands. She knew that. But as her father had often said, it took a monster to stop a monster. Alex had been given the skills to do this. Might as well put them to good use.
A surge of light illuminated her wand, and Alex snatched it up. She straightened to find Lupin still watching her. Alex shook her head, jaw painfully tight as she stormed past him down the alley. She only made it a few steps beyond Lupin before she suddenly turned back to face him. “You may think you’re being the bigger person here, but your little moral act didn’t stop a werewolf from tearing through a Christmas market and killing my mother. It didn’t stop a vampire from slaughtering my entire unit. The only thing that would’ve stopped that is someone like me. So go back to your little protests and discussions if it makes you feel better. But I’m going to do whatever I have to do to keep people safe. And seeing as you’re not my father, I don’t need your permission.” Not that she needed his either. She didn’t need anyone’s. Alex turned away and resumed her angry march down the alley, hooking her thumb toward a side street as she did so. “The appetizer went that way.” Let him deal with the hysterical girl. Alex didn’t even care anymore.
