It was very tempting to stay safely tucked away in the muggle world, away from the Ministry and Death Eaters and Orders. Her dads got along in the muggle world just fine, thanks very much. Mali would be lying if she told you she didn't consider it for a good, long time but then she'd miss her friends and her job. Eoin was in the magical world and it would be very unfair if she turned her back and abandon him, especially after he had been so good to her. So, Theo and Mali decided that they would rejoin the magical world and that required wands. They meant to do it days ago but had gotten caught up in conversation and cupcakes and by the time they were ready to go they both had been away from the safety and security of home for too long and the prospect of Diagon Alley was overwhelmingly exhausting. They would try another day. Today was that day. Mali had written Mister Lupin beforehand to let him know where they were going and when, just to check in. The Order was keeping tabs on them for a bit, just in case some Death Eaters tried to make them go missing again. It was surreal, after weeks of being confined to their homes one would think that they would be itching to get out of the house but being out in public was more than a little scary. Mali lingered at the door to the Leaky Cauldron for a few long minutes, considering if the decision was the right one. The wizarding world wasn't exactly kind to them in the past months. Nearly going to wizard prison, nearly dying. The knowledge of The Order of the Phoenix was comforting, actually. There were people fighting back and they could be anywhere. She was sure there were more members than she'd met back at Grimmauld Place. They could be anywhere, shop keepers or random passerbys. She focused on that, instead of the fact the same could be said for Death Eaters as well. No one walked around wearing a sign proclaiming their allegiance to The Dark Lord. The old ones carried it burned into their skin, like Draco did but the newer recruits? They weren't necessarily Marked and their faces may not have made it to a wanted poster just yet. They could hide in plain sight. Mali walked side by side with Theo Ashland, one arm wrapped tightly around his middle and practically clinging to him for dear life. She searched the faces of the people they passed, scrutinizing their facial expressions for signs that they would be trouble, or friendly. Eventually after what felt like miles of walking (but wasn't nearly so) they made it to the shop. Shelves lined the wall, crammed full of wands. Boxes upon boxes were stacked in unsteady piles that looked like they were only being held up by magic or luck. Stepping into the shop was a relief, anxiety untangled itself from it's vice grip around her lungs and eased the knots it had tied in her stomach. Mali peeled away from Theo, catching his hand and leading him up to the counter where she found Jihoon Oh . " 'Ello." she started, working to keep her voice even and casual. "We need new wands, both of us." She trailed off for a moment, looking to Theo. What excuse would excuse two grown adults from needing wands at the same time? "Weeee...broke ours...in.. in..." she looked back to the former Ravenclaw. "In a Charm accident. There was a minor explosion." That sounded viable, she'd had loads of patients who managed to make their charms into figurative bombs. It made sense that a bit of wood might fall victim to an explosion. Pleased with her rather choppy job of lying, Mali offered half a smile, leaning over the counter and dropping her voice as if she were sharing a secret of some sort. She spoke just loud enough for the man and Theo to hear. "He's hoping you've got something with a veela hair core. His last one had it. He's very delicate and pretty, don't you think?"

Mali's tight grip on him was helping Theo just as much as it was probably helping her. If they were going to do this at all, it had to be together. Clinging to each other like frightened children, but together. Mali had an arm around his waist and his was draped across her shoulders. Luckily, they pulled off pretty darn well the whole 'cute, cozy couple on a brisk day' look - or they might have looked a little strange, the way the rest of their attentions were decidedly not on each other. Both of their heads swiveled this way and that, searching the faces around them for even a hint of a shadow of an inch of trouble.
But no trouble was to be found in Diagon Alley. By the time the pair reached the wand shop, they'd relaxed considerably. Enough to be able to break apart - but of course, in true Mali fashion, the woman soon caught up Theo's hand and led him to the front of the shop. Theo even managed to grin; he loved the way they worked, the two of them. For people that knew him and even for people that just saw him and his large, domineering presence, it may have come as a surprise that Theo was so willing to let someone lead him around like that. It didn't surprise Theo at all. Mali was smart and bright and a far better people person than he. The man needed a little guidance in his life. He'd practically forgotten he needed a new wand until Mali mentioned it, for gods' sake.
At the wand shop counter, they found a young man. The last time Theo had been here, the shop keep had been considerably older. Another surprise - as a man prone to fits with a job that could sometimes get messy, Theo didn't really break a lot of wands. He'd had this last one for a rather long time, and looking around at the maze of boxes in the shop now, he felt a pang of nostalgia. He was content in mulling over this bittersweet feeling, letting Mali do the talking (again, guidance) - until the poor thing got caught up in her lie. He looked down at her and shrugged - they could probably tell the bloke the truth, surely he'd recognize their faces at some point - but she worked it out. Theo had to bite down on his lip to fight a growing grin. That was a pretty good one.
Apparently Mali thought so too. She looked mighty pleased with herself, which only made Theo grin more. And ah, there it was - the woman had jokes. Unable to hold back, Theo snorted a laugh. "Why thank you," he ran a hand over his chin in a model pose and poked Mali with his elbow, grinning down at her. "And a...troll whisker for the lady?"

Jihoon was not one for keeping track of current events, or reading the news, but he didn't have to be. If you listened to the wands of the wizards and witches that passed through his shop, you could get a good sense of what was going on. One tense or nervous wand was a personal problem, but many wands with a thin core of discordance tucked along with the nuances of daily living meant that something was going on in the world at large. And, despite his general distractedness, he had noticed the protests in Diagon Alley, and he couldn't have failed to avoid the Ministry poking around their wand supplies to 'make sure they were ethically sourced'. That was insulting, frankly, and Jihoon had told them so before ushering them into the mess of the supply closet and accidentally locking the door. They hadn't come back after he'd finally remembered to let them out, thankfully, but he was irrevocably aware of something going wrong in the universe.
The specifics, though, were a bit hazy, as buried in wandwork and the written word as he was, and so he didn't recognize the two faces that wandered through his door beyond having seen Mali before... somewhere? The tall man's face was vaguely familiar as well, though Jihoon was sure he'd never met him. His gaze drifted between their two faces as he leaned on the counter, head cocked thoughtfully, until he realized that Mali was speaking and shook himself back to the present.
"New wands?" he repeated, eyebrows furrowing in concern. Adults didn't come in to replace their wands lightly, and that was concerning. He lifted his long-fingered hands off the desk, one crossing across his body while the other tapped at his chin. "Did... are you okay?" Jihoon came around the desk, gaze searching both of their faces, though he wasn't sure what he was going to find.
They seemed in relatively good spirits for wizards who'd lost their link to magic (Jihoon, personally, felt very sad for both of them, which perhaps explained his serious demeanour), and Jihoon hummed thoughtfully, raising an eyebrow at their ribbing (as the jokes completely went over his head). "Veela," he hummed, "But not troll, no." His hands dropped from his chin and spread in front of him, expressively, as he tilted his head this way and that to consider the two of them. "Maybe Acacia... hmm... or Fir. Fir?"
Jihoon drew his own wand, gripping it protectively, and swished it in a nonverbal Summoning spell, trusting the wand to know which wands he had in mind. There was a noise from the stacks behind him, and a half dozen wands floated towards the front, settling on the desk with quiet thumps. Jihoon tucked his wand behind his ear and turned to the first one, pulling it out of its box. "Mistletoe and Veela Hair, 14", supple," he murmured, offering it to Theo. The next wand was for Mali. "Rowan," he explained. "and Jobberknoll. 12 1/3", swishy." He carefully passed the wands over and settled against his desk. "Give them a try?" Even if they didn't work, they'd give him some idea of what was going on with the two of them. By listening to these wands - since the originals were not anywhere in sight - perhaps Jihoon could get a clue. He offered a small smile and waited to see what would happen.

Things were all right in the world. Theo was trailing behind her, being led by the hand and they were about to replace their wands. After all the time without the use of magic she found that she didn't miss her wand as much as she thought she would, but still she was very glad to be getting a new one. It would take her back to magic, back to normalcy where they could resettle into their same old life and move past the terrible months they had. Almost everything was right in the world, that was, the wandmaker was a very odd fellow.
He must've been lost in his own little world, the man seemed lost when she spoke to him, snapping into the present at the last moment. "Mm." she nodded her head, tucking a stray strand or two behind her ear, nervous little habit. "New wands." The wandmaker seemed to put a lot of thought into it, at any rate, tapping his chin. "Yeah, we're fine." the witch nodded again, growing more nervous by the second. Did he buy their story? She couldn't actually tell. When he actually left the desk, coming around it and towards them Mali took a step back, grabbing for Theo's hand. Nope, this was a mistake. Abort mission. As unassuming as he seemed, she couldn't be certain he was harmless. It could be an act. They were absolutely defenseless. She should have asked Mister Lupin along...
The anxiety squeezing her heart and her lungs soon eased. It wasn't that he was dangerous, just a bit...weird. She was able to joke about wand cores and it seemed to go directly over his head. Not Theo's though. He was striking poses and playing along and Mali laughed, pressing a hand over her mouth to muffle the giggles. Troll whiskers? He was so funny! "Don't shave for a few days!" she told him with a playful nudge. "I'll just use one of yours!" The wandmaker didn't seem to get their jokes but that was just fine. He was all business, get right down to it, and she supposed the less joking the less time they had to spend in Diagon Alley.
The man bestowed them with wands to try. Mali examined hers, turning it over several times in her hands while asking "Rowan? What's that wood s'posed to mean?" Her last wand spoke to her easy going nature. Rowan sounded a lot more serious than dogwood. When she was satisfied with how it felt in her hand she readied the wand to give it a swish, pausing to grin teasingly up at Theo "If that's your wand you're going to have to kiss me every time you cast the spell, that's how the saying goes." She took the rowan instrument and have it a swish, spine straight and form stiff. It must not have been the proper wand for her, because the oil lamp on the counter shattered the moment the wand cut through the air.

For a second, the wandmaker didn't look like he was going to buy their excuse, and the same anxiety plaguing Mali seeped into Theo's lungs. Was what they were doing suspicious-looking in any possible way? He supposed the two of them would have to think about that now, about everything they did. At least for a while. They'd have to walk a very straight line until the day that, hopefully, people forgot their faces. Theo took Mali's hand when she grabbed at his, ready for her to pull him out of the shop and out of the Alley to go hide somewhere safe. They could just try again another day. Maybe Ollivander's delivered wands by owl?
Then, the wandmaker came around the counter, asking if they were okay. So maybe he did buy their story. Theo held tight to Mali's hand just in case, nodding when she said they were fine. And then the two of them resorted to teasing and laughter, because when didn't they? It had worked in some pretty heavy situations before - and it worked beautifully now. For them, in lightening their spirits, and for the observer. He didn't laugh along with them, but he didn't ask anymore questions, either - just got straight to business. Theo kissed the top of Mali's head - that troll comeback was pretty good - while the shopkeeper summoned some wands.
Both Theo and Mali were handed wands to try - his, of course, containing a veela hair yet again. Instead of jokes, though, Mali said something that made him grin. "Oh, please let this be my new wand," he chuckled in a stage-whisper to the thin instrument in his hand. That was a price he was very willing to pay for every spell, every veela joke to come.
Theo watched and waited as Mali went first, swishing her wand - and promptly breaking a lamp. He smiled at her, and waved his wand at the same lamp. Nothing happened the first time, but with another wave and an order of, "Reparo," the lamp slowly pieced itself back together. Theo lowered the wand and looked toward the shopkeeper. "I think this one might like me. Should I try the others?"
