Technically it wasn't officially Christmas season, that would be tomorrow on December 1st but Mali was very much in the spirit. She looked as if the Christmas section of the local big box store might've thrown up on her with an ugly Christmas sweater (with Christmas lights that actually lit up, thanks magic.) a shimmery silver scarf that looked like a mix of tinsel and yarn and her hair pulled up with a hair tie decorated with jingle bells. She and Eoin would be decorating their apartment later tonight or tomorrow, probably Theo too who would be drafted into service to put up the high bits. Who needed magic when you had a tall, handsome troll for all your reaching needs? Mali jingled as she walked along the cobblestone street with Theo. Hogsmeade looked like a winter wonderland, blanketed with fresh snow that was still falling, snowflakes drifting lazily down from the sky. Every few feet she'd make Theo stop so she could try to catch a snowflake on her tongue without much success. "I'm really excited." she told her tall Yeti as she coaxed him along by the arm again, having given up on the snowflake catching for a few minutes. "This will be really fun! It'll be nice to see Mister Lupin when we're not on house arrest and someone's not dying." Come to think of it, they really hadn't seen one another without something like that. First it was confinement, then it was him bleeding to death, then it was them almost getting murdered by Death Eaters, and then his Werewolfyness. There was no obligation here, no task to achieve, nothing hanging over them and she was looking forward to it. "Are you gonna come over to decorate with Eoin and I? I think we'll make cookies. I'm getting better at baking." Apparently her confidence was up again because she stopped Theo so she could attempt to catch a snowflake on her tongue again, head tilted up and jingling as she chased the falling snow. Eventually they did make it to the meeting place, almost on time too! Mali tugged Theo along at a slightly faster pace when she spotted their third snowman maker up ahead. " 'Allo!" When they'd reached him, Mali disentangled herself from Theo to catch Mister Lupin in a very enthusiastic hug that might've gone on for half a beat too long. He felt warm when it was cold outside. When the embrace was broken she reached up to brush some snow from his hair and smile up at him. Mister Lupin had become very important to her, one could only be saved by someone so many times before they won a space somewhere in your heart. "I'm glad you came. Did you read the book I sent you?" He didn't seem to be as impressed with Gilderoy Lockhart as she was, but it was worth discussing. Mali looked back at Theo, retreating away from Mister Lupin and back to him. "Have you ever read Mister Lockhart's books? He's got a lot of them, they're a quick and interesting read." _______________________________________ Remus Lupin Theo Ashland

While Theo didn't look as much the part of Actual Christmas Tree as his adorable counterpart, he fancied himself pretty darn festive all the same, in his red-and-green striped sweater and matching bootlaces. Call him cheesy (and he was), but Theo loved the holidays - and the kitschy-er, the better. Everyone was generally happier and sillier around this time, and that did wonders for his own psyche. And his Christmas Tree girlfriend? She was the icing on top of the cake - or rather, the star on top of the tree.
Theo especially liked the way she jingled, as they made their way down the cobblestones. He had a happy grin on his face, once again in his favorite snowy place on Earth with his favorite person on Earth. He didn't mind at all her quest to stop every few feet to catch a snowflake on her tongue - there was always a convenient snowbank to kick around in, or an interesting icicle to examine; or even the occasional snowflake to catch on his own tongue. Theo felt no worries in this picturesque place and he could truly stay like this forever. He was happy, and even happier to see that Mali was happy, too.
"Me too. I haven't built a snowman in years. We are going to do it the old-fashioned way, right?" Where was the fun in magicking a snowman together? Theo laughed at Mali's observation about Mister Lupin. He couldn't deny that he found it sort of...strange that the older man wanted to come build a snowman with them, but really, he couldn't talk. Theo was an older man, too, by some people's standards, and he was giddy for this. Or maybe it was just because he was with Mali. Either way. "That is true. He doing alright?" Theo didn't see Mister Lupin at all, really, unless the man was saving his life. A little prep on the man's current state of mind would be useful in helping Theo prevent a bad case of foot-in-mouth.
"Of course," he smiled down at Mali's question. He wasn't going to miss a minute with her if he could get it. She made him laugh again, and Theo sneaked an arm around her waist when she stopped again. "Is that right? You stopped eating all the chocolate chips before you got to the recipe, huh?"
They were off again soon enough - no time for teasing, they had a job to do! Their fellow snowman maker was just up ahead, and Mali pulled herself away from him to get to the man. Theo was left in the snow, smiling and waiting...and waiting...and - ah, there she was. Theo uncrossed his arms that had found their way across his chest and draped one across her shoulders, nodding at Mister Lupin and greeting him. "Hmm?" He looked down at Mali, a slightly distracted look in his eye. "Oh. I read that last one he did when I first started at the hospital. I think my dad's read them all, though. Which one were you guys reading?"

Remus was far more subdued than the two people he was waiting for, who he could already see coming from a mile away - mostly thanks to the...were those Christmas lights on her sweater? Remus was subdued in clothing, but not in spirit. He knew this holiday season was going to be exceptionally hard - and that's why he felt so exceptionally grateful for the people that were doing their very best to make it a little easier for him. Old friends, as always, and new ones too. Remus still didn't quite understand the friendship that bloomed with a woman that once accused him of Dark magic, but he wasn't one to question a good thing. He was happy around Mali and he needed that right now, happiness. All he could get of it.
He was grateful for Theo, too, if mainly for the affectionate way he treated Mali. Mali deserved that more than anybody, and Remus worried himself over her well-being even if she was the one concerned over him all the time. Remus watched with a little grin on his face as they came up the cobblestones. They certainly seemed happy, enjoying the snow. Remus lost his love for winter after one too many almost freezing to death in it - but having children reinvigorated in him a solid appreciation for a play-date in the snow. As long as he had somewhere warm and cozy to go afterward. And while one might not think a grown man would be so excited about building a snowman, Remus would do just about anything for a little cheer and a little company.
A hug was nice, too. Really nice. You really couldn't blame a man for craving that physical connection when it felt lost to him. He hugged Mali back with a smile. "How could I not? You two are the embodiment of Christmas cheer itself," he chuckled, releasing her and feeling prompted to give the bells in Mali's hair a little jingle before dropping his arms back down to his sides. He nodded and waved at Theo before answering Mali's question. "Oh yes, I've read his works quite a few times. Gilderoy held my position at Hogwarts right before me...the first time around. He's an interesting man, to say the least." He tilted his head at Mali, small smile still gracing his scarred features as she asked Theo the same question. "Wanderings With Werewolves. And it is a very interesting read, when taken with a grain of salt. But I think this is a conversation better suited for hot chocolate. Don't we have a snowman to build?" She was in such good spirits...Remus didn't want to disappoint her right now. Mali's moods were contagious, and right now, he simply couldn't get enough of that cheerfulness.

Everything was right in the world, walking along with Theo throwing gentle banter between them. She tilted her head back with a grin at his question. "Isn't the old fashion way the only one you know?" She enjoyed teasing him about his age, it was all in good fun. He was her favorite person and being with him even if it was just walking to make snowmen was her favorite thing. The grin fell away when he asked about Mister Lupin and she looked towards the ground, holding Theo's arm just a little tighter. "I reckon he's as good as you can expect. Still sad around the edges but coping well. I'd still be crying if I lost you. I'd never stop." That thought was almost paralyzing because they'd come so close to it back when they were at the Death Eater's mercy. In a relatively short amount of time, Theo had become her whole world. It was only to be expected after all they'd gone through together.
Things were starting to feel too heavy for such a light hearted outing and she decided to catch another snowflake on her tongue to break up her own tension. The converstaion ebbed on to brighter things, like Christmas decorating and baking. The grin was back and she laughed and shook her head, bells jingling. "No! I just stopped baking things with such tasty ingredients!" No one chomped down on oatmeal or granulated sugar like they did on chocolate chips. "I was only testing them, anyway, making sure they were raisins." The things one did for love...
Eventually they reached Mister Lupin who gave really good hugs and he even played with her ponytail, jingling her bells. Mali laughed and looked back over her shoulder towards her festive Troll. "He looks good in Christmas colors, doesn't he?" There were fond feelings in her chest and she couldn't be happier. Mali ruffled Mister Lupin's hair "You could use some jingle bells yourself!" before she went back to Theo and was just as content under his arm, snuggling in a little closer. Their snowman companion didn't seem nearly as impressed with Gildeory Lockhart but Theo was plain distracted. She looked up at him, wrinkling her nose as she asked "Everything alright?"
Mister Lupin took the lead in answering the question and Mali peeled away from Theo to start working on their snowman. "I think Mister Lockhart's book can be helpful." Mali didn't do pessimism well, it would be hard for her to get her brain around the fact the man was a fraud. For now, she held on to the idea that there was something in the book that could make everything better for everyone, that she, Eoin and Theo could really change things for werewolves. It was foolish, but it was fueled by a little bit of naivety and a desire to help those who needed it most. "He has something in it about curing lycanthropy. And if he can do it, why can't others? That would solve everything!" Even if Mister Lupin didn't believe it, she would. Mali would have enough optimism for all of them if that's what it took.
The witch set to packing a ball of snow with the intention of rolling it into part of the snowman's body but after some consideration she decided to lighten the mood again. Mali eyed the snowball, then Theo, then the snowball before squeaking out "Aah! A yeti!" and chucking her ball at the side of Theo's head. Just like last time, she was amused by her own antics and fell back into the snow, laughing and holding her stomach.

"Oh, you're hilarious. Back in my day...," Theo's old-man imitation (it wasn't that great anyway) tapered off as he grinned down at Mali to find she wasn't smiling anymore. He'd asked about Mister Lupin and now she wasn't smiling anymore. Theo frowned. He could feel her subconscious shift, clinging a little tighter to him and her words weren't any better. "You're not going to lose me. Never," he said quickly, shaking his head and causing a little flurry of the snow caught there. They both knew what a promise that was. Hadn't they come close already? Close enough that Theo didn't even want to fathom the thought of leaving Mali alone, or vice versa. They'd already lived the very close reality of losing one another - so Theo was very determined to live the reality of now, of having her. No time for anything different.
Even if that time was spent just watching her, catching snowflakes on her tongue and jingling in the snow. Theo had all the time in the world for that as it grew a smile across his face once more. A little more gentle teasing, and a promise to spend more time together later, and they were back - heralded by the sound of Mali's laughter. From an outside perspective it might have appeared unhealthy, how often the two of them could flip-flop; but it was something Theo had known his whole life. And he knew as long as he could still get Mali to laugh, they were as okay as they could be. "You're a hero," he grinned. Seriously, as long as there were no raisins in the cookies - they had to be okay.
Theo had plenty of time to think about what cookies he would like as he waited for their snowman operation to get on its feet, eliciting a low grumble from his stomach. Thinking about food was going to do him no good right now, but he felt sort of weird watching and waiting for Mali...so he was glad when she came back and snuggled against him. Her warmth always set him (mostly) right. "Yep," he nodded down at her.
Mister Lupin and Mali were reading books about werewolves together, it turned out - which, Theo supposed, was appropriate. Mister Lupin didn't seem very impressed with the work but Mali sounded like she found some value in it. And Theo...well, Theo had the strangest feeling that this conversation wasn't for him. And not just because a lot of people didn't peg him as a reader (which he was, actually, thank you). Just...something. Something he couldn't quite put his finger on. Instead, when Mali pulled away from him this time, he dug his fingers into the snow. He'd just have to get this thing started, then.
Theo was busy pushing a rather large ball of snow with all his strength and all his attention - when he was hit with a squeak and a snowball. He looked up with a grin, already knowing who the culprit had to be - and yep, there she was, real proud of herself and rolling around in the snow. Her laughter elicited the same from Theo, as always - as well as the promise of revenge, of course. "Remember, just the old-fashioned way this time!" He ducked down behind his sizable snowman part and packed together some snow for a return volley. When he poked his head back up, though, what he saw gave him pause. Mister Lupin crouched by Mali, the two of them looking quite...plotting.

"I think I ought to get myself one of those jumpers, don't you think?" Remus nodded, admiring Theo's Christmas colors with a smile. Remus could definitely do with some color in his life, that was for sure. Even if he didn't have to anymore, he was still inclined to wear the same old, drab things he'd always worn. He used the excuse that they were comfortable, but really, he still sort of panicked at the thought of spending money on clothing. He always dressed his kids smartly, though, and that's what really mattered to him. Dad didn't need to look anything special. Though...the addition of a few jingle bells was pretty tempting. He smiled as Mali ruffled his hair and at her jingling as she walked away from him.
And though the topic of Gilderoy Lockhart was a might bit sensitive for Remus, he didn't stop smiling. He couldn't, not around Mali in this picturesque wonderland on this perfect day. Remus didn't hate Lockhart by any means - if anything, he felt pity for the bloke - but he did feel a bit of bitterness toward the man. Anything that gave people false hope about werewolves was just as dangerous as the beasts themselves, in his opinion. Remus' people really didn't need any help in making their lives more difficult than they already were. Still, he listened to what Mali had to say. She was just hopeful, not stupid. "If only it were that easy," he shrugged uncomfortably, feeling like he was letting her down even if it wasn't even him that wrote the damned book. "We have a long way to go before any hope of a cure, I'm afraid. Wolfsbane didn't even exist until I was almost through Hogwarts." He paused, and grinned. "And I'm not that old. But I think you're right, Mali. It could still be helpful for us if a bit...far-fetched. I think we should be open to any ideas at all at this point." There. That was a compromise, yes? Better than calling out Lockhart for what he was, at any rate.
While they talked, Theo had gotten started on their snowman. Mali got to work as well...sort of. Remus had just gotten to work searching the cobblestones for loose rocks to use as eyes and buttons when he heard a squeak. He looked up in time to see Mali pelting Theo with a snowball, and the pair of them falling to the ground - Theo to plot his revenge, and Mali to laugh her head off. Which, of course, was all the reason in the world for Remus to laugh, too. The only thing better than snowman building? Snowball fighting. He dropped down next to Mali, dipping his head down low to murmur his super-secret plan. "What do you say, teammates? I think we ought to stock up and hide before he casts a blizzard on you, at any rate." Remus grinned and held his hand out to her, to pull her up.
