Christmas was fast approaching, despite Remus' pleas otherwise, and he was making sure not to spend a moment of this frigid season alone. He couldn't, he knew that about himself well enough now. He knew that what he wanted most was in no way good for him - so he made plan after plan after plan, greeting faces he hadn't seen in a long time in holiday cheer, and spending more time than ever with more familiar ones. He hardly even slept without a twin or two nearby, didn't even leave work until he knew they would be home. Work, or its surrounding areas, that is. Hogsmeade was a good a place as any to wait for his babysitters to bring his kids home so he wouldn't be home alone, and there was one more familiar face waiting for him in the Three Broomsticks after work that he was eager to see. Mali put in far more than her fair share of work to make sure Remus didn't feel so lonely, and he'd grown quite fond of her in the interim. He was happy just to see her, for no other reason than her wanting to check in on him. He did checking of his own, of course. It was Remus' nature to worry. Mali was on his doorstep bleeding just days ago and as he entered the pub and searched for her, his face was lined with concern. But there she was, smiling as ever, over at a table by the hearth. Sitting across from Theo - Remus hadn't expected the man, but was glad to see him all the same, smiling as well. Remus made his way over and settled into the chair next to Mali, placing his bag under the table and pulling off his mittens before turning to smile at the pair. "Hello. Cold, isn't it? I barely made the walk from the castle." Mali Johar Theo Ashland

The Three Broomsticks was a lovely spot to spend a few hours with two of her three favorite boys. There was a warm fire, delicious butterbeer and one could see Hogwarts through the window. The castle in the background stirred up fond memories of her days in school, mostly fond anyway. There was the year that she refused to talk about, one that's memories became more vivid the more Death Eaters were in the Prophet and The Quibbler, but for the most part the old school conjured up a sense of nostalgia.
Things would have been perfect if Eoin could've come along, it would have been Mali's entire heart all crowded around a single table but this was pretty good too, sitting across from Theo with one hand propping up her chin and the other stretched across the table to take his. As much as she wanted to see Mister Lupin, she enjoyed intimate little moments like this with Theo. There was a lot of confusion brewing in her heart lately, only made worse by the latest round of bleeding and healing with Remus--er--Mister Lupin but at the end of the day Mali knew that she loved Theo completely the only question was how much she cared for or loved Mister Lupin as well.
Eventually Mister Lupin made it to the pub, having come from work. Mali wasn't hard to spot, in her her ugly Christmas sweater. This time it was stitched christmas tree against a jolly red background, the tree's ornaments made out of different colored puffballs. This one had no magical enhancements as it was a gift from one of her muggle dads, but it was one of her favorites. Love made things just a little bit warmer, a sprig of holly decorated a hair pin stuck in long dark locks. When she saw Mister Lupin the witch sat up straight, pulling her hand from Theo's to wave at him from across the room.
He settled in next to her and Mali's happy grin only grew, as did the weird feeling of conflict that was just under her ribs. It was cold and she nodded along, patting him on the knee as she told him "I'm glad you made it! How was work?" The fact that he taught at Hogwarts was really impressive, only the best people did. Mali subconsciously leaned in as he spoke, listening intently and suddenly snapping back up straight as if she suddenly remembered where she was and who else she was with, turning her attention back to Theo only to gush over Mister Lupin "Did I tell you he teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts? Fitting, isn't it?" Somehow she couldn't imagine him teaching anything else.

Theo would always take any minute he could get with Mali - even when, here recently, a good number of those minutes were spent in the presence of another man. Theo supposed he understood Mali's plan here; Mister Lupin was grieving and holidays were hard, Theo knew that. He knew that Mali liked to care of people and he knew very well that her light and her warmth really were healing.
But Theo also knew he had an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach whenever he was around the two of them. At first he tried to write it off as residual anxiety from their house arrest days - but Mali didn't seem nearly so anxious in Mister Lupin's presence. She seemed to enjoy his company, really enjoy it, sometimes to the brink of ignoring Theo while he was standing right there. Theo didn't really have anything against Mister Lupin, he was a nice guy and he was certainly interesting - not to mention the whole deal of Theo probably owing his life to the bloke - but Theo was also a jealous person. He had no capability of ignoring any uncomfortable feelings and had no choice but to let them grow, especially when it was all happening right in his face and he couldn't say anything about it. Mali wasn't technically doing anything wrong, even he could logically admit that, even though his gut told him otherwise.
Still...time with Mali was a precious thing, so he was going to take it. At least they were waiting together for Mister Lupin to get there, a few moments of choice alone time. And man, was it choice. Theo was just as easily swayed by his good feelings as the bad ones, and Mali was making him feel all sorts of good things right now. He had such a smile on his face that it didn't even fade completely when Mali's attention - and hand - were eventually torn away from him by the new arrival. Theo leaned back in his chair and nodded at the older man as he joined them (sitting beside Mali - there was that little kick in his gut) and greeted them.
Then his eyes went back to Mali - she looked so happy. It was just who she was. He couldn't really begrudge her that, could he? Mali loved most everyone - but that included him, too. He had no doubts about her feelings for him, no matter what else may complicate those. He smiled slightly at her, eyes glancing over at Mister Lupin. "I don't think I knew that, actually. It does fit, yeah - you like it?"
