Mali was quickly becoming the queen of picnics. She liked them, they were easy and fun and outside in the fresh air and sunshine was her favorite place to think. They had lots of thinking to do most of the time, their schemes and ways to counter act the Ministry required planning, forethought and occasionally well contrived alibis. Theo'd come along because their busy schedules often left so little time together and because he was just as much a part of this as she was. He didn't really have a choice in the matter, when she dove in head first Mali pulled him right along without stopping to ask if it was alright. It was too late to change it and all she could do was regret it or embrace it, so along Theo came.
The witch was currently sprawled out in the grass, flat on her back between the two men. Almost her whole heart was there on the face of the hill, all that was missing was the adorable pharmacist she had the honor of having for a best friend. The conversation had ebbed and flowed for the better part of an hour, covering an array of subjects from werewolves to potions to wars. The conversation had brushed over the second wizarding war and Remus' part in it which nagged at Mali and made her feel uncomfortable. She couldn't even put her finger on exactly why, but something about it bothered her. He did some work with some werewolves, surprise... but... she'd actually lived through the second wizarding war as well and had a very different point of view on it. Especially after learning about his Order.
Lots of people felt abandoned during the second wizarding war. Potters supporters were among them, but also the students. "Can I ask you something, Remus?" Mali asked as a formality while sitting up and shaking grass out of her hair. It was an uncomfortable subject and like always, her hand went for Theo's as soon as she managed to pick out stubborn blades and a single twig from her mane of soft, dark hair. "Why didn't anyone try to do anything about Hogwarts? If you've got a whole secret society.. Like some sort of vigilante army... why didn't anyone try to help the students?" Mali scooted back, closer to Theo. He was a source of security for her and it wasn't something she was ashamed about. "S'like everyone turned around and forgot Hogwarts was there." Her voice cracked in her throat as she fought against the urge to tear up. Mali was a crier, no doubt, but heavy memories always intensified that. It was a time she seldom talked about, but it was on her mind now more than ever. "They were using children to torture other children, for Merlin's sake. Small ones, too." Her attention turned to the Troll now. "Did you even hear about it? I don't think it was in the Prophet or the Quibbler or whatever but I don't think it was exactly a secret that Death Eaters were running the school, was it?"

Mali took him on more picnics than he could ever remember being on in his life - and Remus loved it, of course. He liked being outside, especially on a nice patch of grass in springtime. It gave him fond memories of the Hogwarts grounds - arguably the best place on Earth, no matter how long you'd been away from them or the other places you'd seen since then. He sat sprawled out wide in the grass with Mali laying next to him and Theo's shadow falling over the both of them, chatting and munching away without much care in the world. Sort of weird, considering the somewhat heavy topics they were touching on, and the fact that Remus' picnic companions had caused him quite a lot of care and worry over the past year...but the sun was bright and warm, and the grass soft, and everything felt pretty okay right now on their little hillside.
"Of course you can," Remus said automatically, shaking himself out of a cloud-gazing daze and looking down to see Mali sitting up. If she was sitting up, that usually meant she was thinking hard about something; Remus didn't mind, though. There wasn't much at all that was off-limits between the two of them anymore, and Remus liked the way her questions so often caused him to pause and think.
And this one, as he should have expected given where their conversation was going, was quite a doozy. It was one of those things Remus had spent no short amount of time thinking about himself; Mali seemed to have some sort of special gift at sussing those out of him. And at making him feel even more guilty about whatever it was than he already felt. Mali's voice cracked and he had all the urge in the world to put a comforting hand on her shoulder - but Theo already had that handled. When Mali turned to the younger man to question him, too, Remus straightened up and pulled his legs in, resting his hands in his lap. He wanted to get a word in edgewise before Theo - bless him, Remus was really starting to like the man but he had all the sensitivity of a baboon - could...er, give his opinion on the matter. "That was Dumbledore's deal, really - all of it. Protecting the school as well as some of the secrecy around what went on there. When that man told you he would take care of something, you didn't really get in his way. Of course, he'd died before it really started to get bad...," Remus trailed off, picking at the grass. "I suppose we were all sort of wrapped up in our own thing at that point. It's not that no one cared. It just felt like there were more pressing matters at hand. Hogwarts has always been so untouchable, no matter who's in charge." Theo spoke, and Remus turned his head to Mali then, like he was just realizing something and it was leaving a bad taste in his mouth. "Did anything ever happen to you while it was going on?"

Picnics. Picnics. For such a tall person, Theo sure did spend a lot of time sitting on the ground - but if he was going to do it for anybody, he'd do it for Mali. He was actually rather pleased, happy she was including him in things because it meant more time together for them. Theo didn't have Mali's active spirit and his compassion expenditure was categories below hers, but that wasn't to say Theo wasn't a caring individual. He was just...more reserved with who he cared about. Like Mali. He liked making her happy, and if making other people happy - or safe or comfortable - made her happy, well...he was happy to help. He made a good shade spot on picnics, anyway.
Having Mister Lupin around helped, too. When Mali and Mister Lupin got to talking and discussing and plotting and planning, you couldn't really help but feel involved and excited. Even if you were Theo. He happily chatted with the two of them on topics such as war and werewolves, even if most of his points were mostly just regurgitated from things he'd heard Mali say. He was a smart shade spot, thank you.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere (or maybe he just wasn't paying close enough attention), Mali reached for his hand and the look on her face wasn't so picnic-esque any longer. He laced his fingers through hers and leaned against her back when she scooted back toward him. Maybe Theo didn't understand, or bother to understand, all of the things Mali talked about and worked for - but he knew her body language better than any words she could speak. She was uncomfortable, and he knew his just being there was better than any words he could speak. All the planning, plotting, and scheming in the world couldn't make him feel more involved than this.He was happy to let Mister Lupin answer the hard questions with as many words as he wanted.
Until Mali addressed Theo directly, of course. He squeezed her hand when he heard a little crack in her voice and then her attention was on him. He looked at her a moment, thinking. He felt like Mali wanted an answer from him that he just didn't have. That time period had been the most aloof of Theo's life, and it had almost nothing to do with the war going on in their world. He'd been so lost and loose, he doubted he ever even looked in the Prophet or the Quibbler even if they had had any news of Hogwarts.
Once Mister Lupin said his piece, Theo felt like maybe his wouldn't sound so bad. His was just one experience out of many, one individual story of one family trying to make it through a war in one piece. "I sort of got the story, from Meg." He shrugged uncomfortably - his sister still wasn't his favorite thing to discuss with Mali, and the only thing he could tell her right now probably wouldn't put Meg in Mali's favor any further. "She was there. She didn't talk about it that much. Just keeping her head down, trying to graduate, you know?" Mister Lupin asked a question and Theo welcomed the moment to get his eyes off of Mali to look at the other man; though, his question wasn't all that pleasant to hear.

Having Theo there and having him show interest made Mali happy. It was like they truly were in this together, not that she was dragging him along unwillingly. It was something special between them, a purpose to bond them together. Mali viewed the whole wolfsbane operation and all the risks involved as her personal penance for what had happened at the hospital but also a way to help a friend and people like him. It meant everything to her that Theo was willing to shoulder some of the responsibility to help her friend (it was no secret that she had a stronger relationship with Remus than Theo did.), that it was important to him because it was important to her. Theo had every reason to quit, to demand that she do so as well or at least stop bringing it around him and his family after Meg was attacked, but he didn't. They just got through it, managed to get over that obstacle and kept on. That was love and dedication and why they should spend the rest of their lives together.
Theo didn't shy away when Mali sought him out for comfort from the subjects that she brought up. The familiar weight of her favorite troll leaning against her back was soothing and grounding all at once. If Death Eaters decided to swoop in right now and start throwing curses she knew that Theo would have her back, literally and figuratively. It allowed for the anxiety that was twisting it's way up her spine to unravel a bit. Not too much, just enough to take the edge off. She listened to Remus, biting back unhelpful and sassy comments such as wondering how you could get in the way of someone who was dead, especially since he died before the Ministry fell and the Death Eaters inserted themselves into Hogwarts.
Mali raised her eyebrows as Remus continued on. "How could you think it was untouchable when the person who you just said was tasked with protecting it was dead? How is it untouchable if there were blo---" Anger managed seeped into her voice and the witch cut herself off, closing her eyes for a second to calm herself down. Once she continued on she spoke in an even, neutral tone. "If there were Death Eaters on staff?" It seemed inconceivable and downright naïve that people--that someone such as Remus could've thought that. He was so insightful and observant. Then again, she didn't see what it was like beyond those castle walls. "Something happened to everyone there." Except maybe the children of Death Eaters... And even then? "Dumbledore did a terrible job even when he was alive. Haven't you heard what Professor Umbridge did to punish students? You think someone who let one of his staff members make children carve words into their skin as retribution for mouthing off was doing a bang up job of keeping his school safe?" Mali herself had quite a few scars, mostly from her misadventures and clumsiness but one very faded scar had a rather peculiar shape.
It wasn't fair to hold Remus responsible for the lack of attention Hogwarts and the vulnerable population inside of it got during the War but he was here and she had a lot of pent up feelings regarding it. Mali just wanted answer and to understand. It changed nothing between them, that's why he was one of the best sort of friends. All she wanted was to understand, which is something she couldn't really grasp when Theo spoke. "But didn't you worry about her while she was there? How could you've not wondered what she was facing with Hogwarts under Death Eater control?" Was Meg really so different back then, that she could let things go unchallenged? Feisty, protective Meg who hid her werewolf friends from the Ministry? The whole 'war' thing and how it changed people was still giving Mali lots to think about, even years later.

Remus had only the tiniest little reaction to Mali's obvious anger. He'd heard worse, a lot worse - and really, the anger was warranted. In the name of finally ending it once and for all, the Order probably hadn't done everything it could to keep the citizens of the wizarding world safe in the process. But they had done it, messy as it was, and dealing with the loose, unresolved ends was just a part of the clean up process he'd become accustomed to. Even now, it wasn't rare for people to question their actions; often, from within the Order itself. It made Remus sort of proud, in a way. Most of the Order members were young, as most of his generation had died off. This general was critical and observant of everything and it made the old professor proud. Question everything, a philosophy he could get behind.
Sometimes those questions were uncomfortable, and that was alright. Remus was pretty good, in certain situations, from removing his emotions from his logic. He listened to Mali's concerns with a neutral face, leaning back on his arms in the grass. "Because we all had the foolish belief that Hogwarts would take care of itself. We didn't think anyone could touch it. It was unheard of." For hundreds of years, the castle took care of thousands upon thousands of witches and wizards. It had taken care of all of them. Hogwarts had seemed truly unbreakable, right down to its stones. Remus looked at Mali. "As I said, it was foolish. We didn't do everything right and I do think it is something we'll need to answer to for many years to come. I think we sometimes got so caught up in our end goal we forgot who we were fighting for in the first place. I regret that."
Mali, like a good number of people these days, was also not a fan of Dumbledore. This burned Remus a bit more than the whole war thing. His feelings on Dumbledore were incredibly complex. While he absolutely could see where Mali was coming from, and even agree with it, Dumbledore was also probably one of the main reasons Remus lived past childhood. "He also let a child werewolf live among his students before wolfsbane was even invented," Remus glanced at Mali coyly. "I hear you Mali, I really do. Honestly, the man will always be beyond comprehension for me. But I do know he did some good things, among what we may question. Trying his best, just like the rest of us. And I am truly sorry you had to suffer for it." At that, Remus hushed up for a minute and let Theo say his piece - thinking it couldn't really get much worse than his own less than stellar answers.
