It was true. Every single word of that blasted article from The Prophet was true, as confirmed by Professor Lupin last night. Luckily by the time his owl reply arrived it was too late for for Luna to show up on Meg and Theo's doorstep or she would've gone over and cursed the bloody git into oblivion. He was responsible for the murder of someone who meant a lot to Neville, his father! Neville meant the world to her which was bad enough, but that Theo could hide something like that from her... They were dating at the time, for goodness sake! Luna was seething with rage even after having slept on it. It was rare for her to be so angry and combative but bloody hell, had Theo earned it! She appeared at the home early in the morning, a sleepy faced Meg let her in. The blonde didn't look quite awake enough to process what was going on as Luna slipped inside and marched herself to the man's bedroom door without a word. Once there she had a lot to say "THEO!" Luna howled, thumping the door with her first. "THEO! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!" Both the letter from Lupin and the Prophet article were crumpled together in her other first. Granted she didn't read Remus Lupin's whole letter, getting stuck on the part where he confirmed the article's version of events and who was involved. It didn't matter what the rest of the letter said, Luna was seeing red. Normally a serene soul, she fiercely protected and cared for those close to her. The dishonesty she could forgive, what had been done to the Longbottom family? No, that wasn't something she could allow to go unaddressed. Unfortunately for the Ashlands her closeness to Neville blinded her to reason and logic. Soon the man in question made his appearance and he looked terrible. There was sadness or shame, maybe a little vulnerability and as pathetic as it looked it did absolutely nothing to soothe out her intense anger. Luna thrust the prophet article forward, his face along with some other woman's were prominently displayed looking distressed. "What the bloody hell is this!? I didn't want to believe it! I thought no, we were dating at the time. Surely he would've told me if something like that happened!" Anger bubbled up and spilled over, Luna threw the publication to the side before pushing Theo's door open so she could have a better go at him, long index finger poking him in the chest. "I can't even stand to look at you right now! Frank Longbottom... You killed Frank Longbottom and you bloody hid it like a coward! You're a disgrace to Gryffindor. His son didn't deserve to be put through this! How dare you! And you---you had the audacity to---to lie about why it took you so bloody long to go back to work! IT was because you KILLED SOMEONE! You weren't ill, you weren't traumatized, you were a damn murderer!" Breathing hard and trembling from her temper fueled outburst, Luna grabbed for her wand and held Theo at it's tip. She wanted to curse him, to make him feel her outrage for lying to her and hurting someone that she cared deeply about in the process. "I was a fool to believe you! To feel sorry for you and you played me and everyone else!" She stood there in silence for a good few moments before her wand faltered because no, as angry as she was, she really couldn't curse him but she was surprised to find that Meg was not just standing there watching her brother threatened but had her wand out as well. Her attention whipped around to the blonde Ashland, eyes narrowing accusingly, fingers tightening on the wand by her side. "Did you know!? Did you hide it from me too!?" ----------------------------------------------------------------- Theo Ashland & Meg Ashland

Well, it wasn't Azkaban - but Theo's home was certainly no less a prison. There were nasty guards - he wasn't sure who yelled louder when the news broke, his dad or his sister - and his own solitary confinement; Theo was stuck in his room and very brief late-night runs to the kitchen, lest he face the family he lied to. They were understandably pretty darn unhappy with him, his lies, and their own current predicament of being stuck with his sorry ass in the house at all times until Merlin knows when. For Theo, this was maybe worse than prison. This was hell. He was constantly reminded of what he'd done, from the disappointed grumblings of his family to the much louder Howlers than had already begun to arrive through his window - and the one person who could understand, and thus make it just a little bit easier, was being held captive in her own home. He wasn't even allowed to talk to Mali, no letters or anything, and he was struggling. Theo was an incredibly dangerous person to leave alone in a vulnerable state - guess that's why they took his wand, too.
With nothing else to do but mope, mope he did. He didn't even try to sleep, because surely the monsters lurking in his nightmares were waiting right behind his eyelids to congratulate him. He was one of them now. A bloody murderer. Even if he (read: Mali, no one would ever believe Theo) managed to convince them of the truth one day, that wasn't a reputation one could exactly shake. People would never trust him again. And Mali? With their time apart, she just might start believing them, too. Theo would be utterly alone and universally hated.
These sorts of cheery thoughts, among others, were keeping him company in the early morning hours when he heard voices outside of his bedroom door. Very loud voices, at least one of them. Theo cursed and tried to block them out - people had been coming to the door already, reporters, maybe Meg had let one of the bloody gits inside. Sounds like something she would do. This voice, though...it was very loud, and pounding against his door, demanding his audience. And...he recognized it. He'd never had it yell at him before, but he recognized it. Theo's heart dropped into his stomach. Luna was here, and she was pissed.
Theo had to drag himself to the door, feet shuffling across the carpet. He'd lied to her to protect her, too (and himself, but definitely her at least a little bit). He had no intention of hurting Luna in all this - but he obviously misunderstood the depth of her connection to it. Because she was hurt, and pissed. Boy, was she pissed. Theo was actually scared to open his bedroom door. He hadn't seen her much at all, honestly, but he'd certainly never seen her so angry and it was intimidating. Theo felt dried up and brittle, already too tired of explaining himself when no one believed it anyway. He was a shell, and he looked it.
Theo opened his bedroom door slowly, just a small space, as if some physical barrier could lessen the blow of Luna's rage. She had the Prophet article, and Theo stared down at his face next to Mali's as Luna went in on him. For a brief confusing second - almost hopeful, it was so confusing - Theo thought she was mad about Mali. Mad that he was pictured with another woman at a time when the two of them were dating. Oh, if it were only so juvenile and innocent. Those problems Theo could handle with a surprising grace (from lots of practice). But he wasn't a schoolboy and this wasn't a case of jealousy. He was a murderer and Luna another person he'd hurt terribly with his lies. He was quickly seeing how fast that number was going to add up in the next couple days.
"Luna--". He just got started before Luna was barging in and poking him in the chest, more accusations. Where to even begin? Theo couldn't tell what she was the maddest about. "Please stop-- I thought it was better-- For you--". He couldn't get a word in edgewise around her anger - and then she pulled her wand and the fight was over. Theo had no wand, he couldn't protect himself against magic no matter how much bigger than Luna he was. He held his hands up in front of him. "Please. I'm so sorry." He forced himself to stand still and not tremble, forced himself to look Luna in the eye - until she dropped her wand and looked elsewhere. Theo followed her gaze, absolutely shocked to find his sister standing there with her wand on Luna. That was an interesting development. The way she'd been yelling last night, he really would have expected her to curse him right along with Luna. Theo shook his head at Luna's questions that weren't directed at him, backing up Meg's words.

Bloody hell. Meg couldn't sleep, either - no, not because there was a murderer in the next room ever (honestly, in her rudimentary misunderstanding of the Imperius Curse, she wholly believed Theo dense enough to get himself mind-controlled). That wasn't the issue. The issue was he bloody lied about it. For months! That was the sort of thing you might tell your family about, yeah? Murder. Bloody murder. She had felt sorry for the bastard, making him soup almost every night for two weeks because she thought he was sick. He was sick, alright - a sick, lying bastard. Bloody git. The more Meg thought about it, the more she seethed - the whole night through she thought and seethed. Her old dog, always sleeping by her side, had to leave the room because she was grumbling too much for his taste.
When morning showed up, she was finally wearing herself out - or thin, one of the two. She was dozing in her bed when a knock came at the door. She heard no one else rising to get it - certainly not bloody Theo - so Meg rolled out of bed and went to the door in her pajamas. There stood Luna, looking unlike any way Meg had seen her before. She looked pissed. Meg mumbled some apology about being late for work because her brother was a huge git - but that wasn't it. Not the first part, at least. Definitely the second part, the way Luna marched straight to Theo's door and began banging on it. Oh, dear. Meg trailed Luna to Theo's door as he opened it, stopping behind her and crossing her arms to watch. He deserved another good chewing out, bloody git. Even though, that look on his face was pretty damn pitiful...
It wasn't just a chewing out, either. Meg's hand went instinctively to her pajama pocket when Luna moved further through the door and started poking Theo in the chest. He was a big guy, but he was also a defenseless guy. Especially in this state, and this context. He couldn't lay a finger on anyone even if had the strength for it. When Luna whipped out her wand, Meg was right behind her, mimicking the other blonde's motions. That was too much. Theo had to be held accountable for his actions but he didn't need to be hurt. That wouldn't solve anything, that was something Meg very strongly believed.
When Luna whipped around on her, Meg was a little taken aback. She lowered her wand so it wasn't pointing directly at the other girl. She shook her head in time with Theo's. "No. I'm just as pissed and shocked and upset as you are, really. But this isn't going to solve anything, Luna." Meg was used to breaking up bar fights between big, drunk buffoons - not smart and capable witches like Luna. She was hard to stare down, and Meg straightened her spine to buy some confidence. "I...want you to put your wand away. Please."

Thought it was better! That was hysterical and if she wasn't fuming the wispy blonde might have laughed in his face. It was a lie, and apparently that was all Theo was about was lies. He didn't think it was better for her. He thought it was better for himself and gave no thought to how she might feel. "You're so selfish!" her voice was laced with venom and unbridled rage. "You're a liar! Just stop your lying!" It was as simple as that. If he wanted something to be better for her then he wouldn't have lied about it. No one had ever thanked anyone for lying to them or hiding horrible news like this. If he was at least honest about that than he was more naïve than she even thought possible.
It didn't matter what his intentions were, really. He was directly responsible for the death of Neville's father, he was the one who hurt Neville in one of the deepest and most painful ways possible. "You're not sorry!" That wand tip did a good job substituting her finger mashing against his chest in anger. "You're bloody sorry you got caught! If it was really true, if it wasn't your fault.. I could have helped you!" It wasn't just her work through the Order but her close friendship with Neville and several other aurors. Luna was as well connected as they came and normally one with a level head with these sorts of things. "I don't believe you! I don't! You lied the whole time, you hid something like that from me and I don't believe it was because you're innocent!" Her entire view of Theo had been distorted. He'd gone from lovable and caring to cold blooded killer. If he had truly been a victim of the Imperius curse he would have told someone... someone.
Meg was a brave one to pull her wand on her. It was no secret that Luna was an accomplished enough duelist to survive battles alongside Harry, Ron and Hermione against Voldemort's nastiest followers. Instead of endearing Meg to Luna it only provoked her. As far as she was concerned she knew absolutely anything about the Ashlands. The lot of them could've been in this together. "A man is dead by your brother's hand! That's not a problem that can be solved, there's no reversal, no solution!" She looked to her wand and back to Meg, shoving it roughly behind her ear like a secretary might keep a pen. Honestly she didn't need a wand for rudimentary spells. She resisted the urge to tell Meg to put her own wand away, that she was confident in her abilities to outduel her but that was unkind and even in her outrage she wasn't needlessly cruel.
The act of putting away her wand worked wonders, it seemed to dull her temper and reign it in and she turned back to Theo and even managed to refrain from shouting. "Tell me what happened. Tell me everything and don't you dare try to lie. I want you to look me in the eye, not at Meg, not at the floor. If you're going to lie then you lie to my face."

Yes, Theo was selfish. He didn't need anyone to tell him that. And yes, he was also a liar - he definitely didn't need anyone to tell him that, especially not now. Maybe the person he needed to stop lying to was himself. He had to believe he'd done all this for someone other than himself - had to, because otherwise thinking he'd covered up the deaths of two men to save just his own hide was too much to bear even for him. Theo nearly always put himself first, that was the honest truth of it, but surely this was different? He lied to protect Mali, or Luna, or his family, or someone...he wasn't sure who, honestly, but for the sake of his sanity his brain refused to let him think it was all just for him. He would never make it believing himself to be something so terrible, even if that's what every other person in the world saw him as.
There was no way to articulate that. The only words coming up at all in his brain were 'I'm sorry' and that was one thing Luna was definitely sure he wasn't. What she said really hurt him. Of course he didn't want to get caught...but he was absolutely sorry it happened in the first place. Theo didn't want to kill anyone, how could she possibly think that of him? "You don't know what you're talking about," he spat. With nothing to defend himself, and knowing that it was probably a very bad idea, Theo was allowing himself to feel angry. Like he could ever control it, anyway. "How, how could you have helped me? You obviously wouldn't have even believed me." He threw his hands up in the air when Luna soon after confirmed his words. She didn't believe him. She thought he was a killer. Luna, sweet Luna thought him capable of purposefully taking someone else's life. Theo wasn't sure if he was mad at her or the apocalyptic world her words painted for him - obviously, if Luna Lovegood could come to that conclusion, he was completely hopeless with everyone else. "I can't believe you," he shook his head. Lot of room he had to talk, going around killing people and then getting disappointed in people for believing it.
Theo had a moment to reflect on this as Luna took time to yell at another Ashland. Meg was surprisingly defensive of him, or at least not so ready to throw him right under the bus - that was something. Maybe it was just one person - and his sister at that, did she really have a choice? - but it wasn't just him against the world. He felt strengthened by that, a little. Just enough to bate his breath when Luna turned back on him and demanded the truth. Theo, still holding his hands up defensively in the air, dropped them and crossed his arms over his chest. He could look at Luna, but it made him feel tight in the chest. Nervous. She was almost scary like this; those distant feelings from their last days together, suspicion and paranoia, came creeping back. Luna was a force to be reckoned with.
"When the first explosion happened in the hospital, I was going toward the noise, to help. She - the Death Eater - completely blindsided me. I didn't have a chance, I promise you. She made me open the door, she made me run down my own patients. Mister Fischer, he's dead too, you know? He was mine. I brought him in, I took care of him. Why would I want to kill them? I almost hurt Mali, too." He waved toward the newspaper. "When she - the Death Eater - was gone, I came out of it and I was so confused. I was scared, Luna. It was fear and nothing more than that. I thought I could just make it go away if I pretended like it didn't happen, and that's the dirty, rotten truth and it's really not much better is it?" Theo shrugged, and now he looked away because his throat was feeling scratchy. "Can't you see I was just trying to make it easier on everyone?"

Dang. Luna was really laying into Theo. And as much as Meg normally thought he deserved it...he didn't need anymore people telling him they didn't believe him. That was rough, no matter what he may or may not have done. Meg stayed silent though, honestly a bit too afraid to interrupt Luna in her rage. She could patch it up later maybe, maybe make Theo tea if he didn't lock himself in his room for the next forever. Tea always fixed things, or at least Meg pretended enough that it did, that it always made her feel better. She worried her lip between her teeth as Theo also began to respond in anger - that definitely wasn't good. Eventually, Meg was worried enough to pull her wand out and eventually, Luna's rage turned on her.
It was brief, but it was burning. Of course not, of course they couldn't bring a dead man back to life. Meg just didn't want anyone else to have to get hurt over this. Luna did put her wand away, which eased Meg's anxiety greatly. She knew the girl was learning wandless magic, too, but she also seemed to stuff away some of her seething rage along with her wand. "I know that. But does anyone else need to get hurt?" She pleaded; but her brother and her friend were back to paying each other attention, and Meg fell silent again.
It was time for Theo's story. Meg hadn't actually heard the whole thing out of his mouth, not like this. Little bits and pieces shouted in sudden rage or sadness, but her information came from the Prophet same as anyone else. Thus, she sincerely hoped the story had the same effect on Luna that it was having on her. Maybe it was just because she knew him so well, but to her, it was obvious that Theo wasn't lying. He couldn't control his emotions on a good day, and right now he looked so damn regretful and sorrowful Meg felt like her heart might break in two. When he was done, Meg shifted on the carpet, approaching the pair hesitantly to lay a hand on his arm and watch Luna for her reaction.

She didn't know what she was talking about?! Theo might have been upset, anyone would to have Luna come at you like she was, but he was really not trying to make it easier on himself, was he? Her fury burned red hot, growing out of control. Normally it was very hard to anger the former Ravenclaw but Theo was pushing all of the right buttons. "I know half the auror department! I could have gotten you help!" Auror Department and The Order, all of which would be looking very intensely at Theo, his associates and his history in the very near future. Hell, Luna would be doing it herself.
"Of course I don't believe you now!" Unable to contain her anger Luna threw the crumpled issue of The Prophet at him "Because I found out from the damn Prophet! Not from you like I should have!" That... was a little humiliating. To feel like you knew someone so intimately and then to learn a huge, horrible secret from a news publication the same time the entirety of the wizarding world. To face questions like 'weren't you dating him, didn't you know'? To find out that one person you trusted yourself to would hurt another person you love so deeply. A terrible, terrible feeling. Neville meant everything to her and she was faced with the knowledge that she cared for the person who took his father away, Imperius curse or not.
Meg was defending her brother, of course. She didn't want him hurt. "Of course!" Luna seethed, clenching her newly emptied hands at her side. "Of course! He didn't hurt anyone you care about!" It was easy for Meg to be so diplomatic when she wasn't present when Neville discovered the body of his father, to see the almost present despair in his mother's eyes. Meg lost nothing, Neville lost everything and Luna felt his lost as if it were her own. "I'm in love with the son of the person he killed! You don't have to hold his hand when it hits him that he will never see his father again. You don't soothe his mother when she doesn't understand what's happened! You just watch Theo mope and feel sorry for himself!" Because that was what Theo did, wasn't it? That's why he hid himself away and claimed to be sick after the hospital attack. Self pity, not legitimate grief or regret.
Luna listened to Theo's story, her face neutral as he recounted his experience. She was searching for a key piece of evidence, something to grab hold of her brain and say 'This! Right here! That proves it!' She didn't know if 'It' was his innocence or guilt, but she wanted something concrete. Something that eliminated all hesitation and reservation but she didn't get it. As angry as she was, Luna wanted to believe Theo. She wanted to believe that someone she admittedly still cared about was not capable of cold blooded murder.
His last sentence relit her temper. Guilt or not, he had to stop pretending that his lies were for anyone's benefit besides his own. Meg moved towards Theo to lay a comforting hand on his arm. No one got to lay comforting hands on Frank Longbottom anymore. There was a hard lump in her throat, repressed tears burning at her eyes. "You" her voice actually cracked not with rage but with sorrow "only did this to" Luna sniffled hard "make it easier on yourself. No one else." The wispy blonde pressed a hand over her mouth, eyes shut tight. "You're a coward."

"Aurors were the last people I wanted to talk to at the time, Luna. That's why I ran away in the first place." Theo punctuated his words hitting his fist against his palm, to save it from going through a wall instead. Luna just wouldn't understand, and it was so, so frustrating. She was making him think about things he didn't want to ever consider again. As far as he was concerned, that part of this ordeal was over. He boxed it up and put it away in order to free up a little sanity to deal with the monster that was house arrest (that was going well so far, obviously). Theo was pretty damn good at leaving the past behind when it suited him, though this was often more of a negative thing than positive. Some would call it...well, selfish.
Theo took the crumpled up newspaper ball to the chest, shaking his head at Luna. What could he say? What could he possibly say? She didn't believe him, that much was very clear. Apparently, Luna was a big fan of the Prophet when it suited her needs. All sorts of vile things in this same vein crawled over Theo's tongue, but he bit them back with the last ounce of his willpower. He still didn't want to hurt her, even now with her yelling in his face. He wasn't interested in that. He cared for Luna still and that was the point of his whole terribly misguided plan to spare her with his lies. Theo was frustrated and vindictive and angry with the world but none of that called for being cruel to Luna. It wasn't her fault he was in this situation to begin with, after all. The only person Theo should have been taking his frustration out on was himself; it sure didn't feel like it, the way he stayed up at night shaking, but maybe he wasn't doing that enough. Suddenly, Theo felt very tired. Not sleepy (wouldn't that be nice), but exhausted. He ran out of steam very quickly and just wanted to go back to hiding in his bed, alone. He was about to say as much when the words exchanged between Luna and Meg did something to him he didn't even know was possible - made him feel even worse.
Luna loved Neville. Theo knew little about the bloke - definitely wasn't keen on meeting him anytime soon, no offense to him - but apparently Luna loved him. There had been mentions of seeing other people, mixed up in all of other Theo's lies at the time (he had to admit, lying did make it all a bit cloudy), but he hadn't known this. That sort of explained it, didn't it? Theo knew as well as anyone what sort of crazed things love could make you do, having just experienced a similar sort of outburst himself not too terribly long ago. Completely different context and point, sure, but the same high emotions. He knew all about that. Because of this, he tried to soften his expression as he told Luna his story. Mixed with his own sniffling at the end of it, the anger had obviously left him. He looked at Meg for a moment - she was being so nice, it was kind of weird, but the massive confusion more than anything did prevent him from sobbing so that was helpful - until the cracking in Luna's voice drew him back. Oh, no. No. Her yelling at him was so much easier to deal with than this. He could get angry, too - but with Luna crying, all he felt was heavy guilt. He looked back to Meg, who looked hesitant to even touch the girl. Theo, of course, was hesitant too - she could whip that wand back out any second, tears or not - but he was also overwhelmed with his own sadness over reliving yet again the worst day of his life thus far. He took a small step forward to rest a wide hand on Luna's shoulder. "I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry. I regret every bit of it and I want to make it right, now."

"Yeah." She was very petulant with that one word, spitting it out like it left a bad taste in her mouth. "And how'd that work for you?" Running away was so stupid! So bloody stupid that it did nothing but complicate things. She crossed her arms over her chest and made a show of observing her surroundings. "Not well, I'd say. I could have helped you! I have connections, Theo!" She wasn't normally one to flaunt how well connected she really was. She had friends at Hogwarts, friends in the Order and friends at the Ministry. Luna had a lot of friends and Theo didn't give her the chance to put them to work for him. She could have found an alternative somewhere in the collective, had she been given the chance to. Maybe someone could've helped him clear up this 'Imperius' business.
The moment the rubbish newspaper left her finger tips she regretted it but the apology tasted sour on her tongue and she swallowed it right back down. Violence wasn't the answer, really, she knew that but she was just so angry and hurt and betrayed. Did she even have a right to feel those things? That was questionable. She didn't know Frank Longbottom when he was healthy but she spent enough time with Neville at his bedside and then coffinside thanks to Theo. The tall Medi-Wizard didnt' fight back, just shook his head and the look on his face tore her heart right in two. The heartbroken feeling wasn't one she wanted while looking into the face of a murderer but they couldn't deny their history together. Fond feelings died hard, especially when there was little niggling doubts propping those feelings up.
It was all too much, to speak about Mister Longbottom and about Neville. Her grip on her composure was slowly loosening and Luna was about to cry in the middle of the Ashland home 'til she felt a hand on her shoulder. It was meant to be a gesture of comfort but it felt far too heavy, like the weight of what it meant would crush her into the ground and Luna needed space. She got this space with a vicious "Don't touch me!" as she jerked her shoulder forward and turned, sweeping her hand and Banishing Theo away from her. The studious former Ravenclaw had been learning wandless magic under the mentorship of the very man responsible for Theo's house arrest. It wasn't perfect, the spell was weaker than if she would have used her wand but it got her point across all the same.
Speaking of crushing, her regret was suffocating. Luna's lungs tightened up and she couldn't breathe. She just stood there, wide eyed with her hand hanging palm out in the air unable to wrap her head around the fact that she just used magic against an unarmed person. "I..." She was at a loss for words looking between both siblings and taking a step back. "Theo, I--Are you okay?"

That was the other thing that made Luna so intimidating to Theo - this talk of connections. What did that mean? Luna was a good witch, a powerful witch. She was smart and that explained most of it to a person like Theo, who didn't want to think too deeply into doubts and suspicions in the interest of not ruining a good thing. But talk like that, of connections, and things like her acute awareness of the world even with a personality that suggested otherwise...that was intimidating to face. It was a complete mystery to him; Theo was the one not doing any understanding there. He shook his head at it, brain refusing to consider it any further. "I know it wasn't the right thing to do. Is that what you want me to say? Don't you think I know that? I was scared, and I was scared to ask for help, and I'm still scared now and you're not helping me now, either." Please leave, he thought, it was on the tip of his tongue waiting to come into existence as soon as Luna and Meg were done (he didn't want to stop that, maybe it would help, who knew) - but then everything devolved into a teary-eyed sort of hell and Theo wasn't really aware of what was going on until he felt his skull crack against a door frame.
Actually, that's not really the sort of thing that really brings awareness to one's mind. Somehow now sprawled out on his bedroom floor, Theo had to shake through the fugue for some moments to figure out how he got there and why his head was aching so bad. A voice, coming to him sounding as if he was underwater, brought his attention away from the patterns in his bedroom carpet. There were two blondes standing in the doorway...when did he get two sisters? Theo blinked; the growing pain in his head did bring some clarity after all, as it grew. It chased the fog away. That was Luna standing there, hand hanging in the air. Theo remembered now. Luna had been crying and he touched her and then found himself flung backward, hitting his head hard against the edge of his closet door before sprawling across the floor. Luna. Luna did that.
"Fuck," was the first thing Theo said, the first movement he made bringing his hand up to rub at the lump forming on the back of his head. He pulled in on himself, emotions flooding his system along with the pain after a momentary reset. Scared - Theo was scared of Luna. She'd had her wand on him earlier, but to think she would actually want to hurt him...Theo pulled his knees right up to his chest, resting his chin on them and wrapping his arms around himself. Angry - what gave her the right, to come into his home and attack him? Theo glared up at her. With her palm still hanging in the air like that though - Luna had obviously done this without a wand, that somehow made it worse - fear won out over any thoughts of vengeance. "Leave me alone. Please, just leave me alone." He buried his face into his knees, words mumbled, eyes squeezed shut over the new throbbing pain in the back of his head.

For once in her life, Meg was at a loss for words. She just didn't know what she could say - to diffuse this situation, to make Luna feel better, to make Theo feel better...to do something besides stand there and stare stupidly. Meg usually had a lot to say. She didn't know very much about the world but she found she could usually always talk her way through it. But she knew absolutely nothing about what faced her now, didn't even know where to start. Luna was talking about love and loss and as a girl with both heavy commitment issues and the luck to have never lost anyone dear to her (that she could remember), Meg had no way to relate. And Luna was right - she did just watch Theo mope around, too, because she didn't know what to say to him either. Meg had never been in love and she'd definitely never murdered anybody. Everything going on before her felt very over her head and very much made her feel like a child, who could only watch as people she cared about hurt and hurt each other.
The words Meg had no say in, but tears were different. She could tell when Theo was about to cry, and the scratchiness in his voice drew her over to him. But Luna was upset, too. When Meg turned around on her she saw that the other woman was growing teary-eyed, too, and she instinctively reached out her other hand to comfort her. That effort died in midair, Meg's hand balling up and falling back to her side when she remembered Luna's wand having just been out moments before. Angry people didn't really like being touched. Theo was angry, too, but after twenty some years of it she understood his nuances and fluctuations a bit better.
She also understood that her brother was a complete and utter idiot sometimes. Meg didn't reach out and touch Luna, but Theo did. Probably the last person on Earth Luna wanted contact with right now, even Meg could see that, and Theo laid a hand right on her shoulder. Meg held her breath - but she didn't do it for long, because almost instantly Luna was sending Theo flying back into a wall and Meg was screaming. She brought her wand up again, on Luna, too scared to actually do anything. Bloody hell, did this ever come up in dueling class? How the hell were you supposed to disarm someone doing magic without a wand?! Meg kept a steady gaze on Luna, even as she instantly seemed overcome with regret. Meg inched her way into Theo's doorway, between him and Luna. "You need to go," she told the girl, trying her very best to keep the shaking out of her voice.

What did she want him to say? That was really the question. As brilliant as Luna was she wasn't even sure what she was hoping to achieve by storming over first thing in the morning. Nothing. She didn't want him to say anything. Every word that came out of his mouth made things worse and worse. The blonde nearly laughed at his statement that she wasn't helping him. "Why would I want to help you now!?" she demanded, voice raising in volume and edged in righteous anger. "You lied to me! I don't even know if I believe you now!" It was certainly an improvement from a few minutes prior. Luna had been convinced he was a cold blooded killer but now, listening to him speak and arguing with him she couldn't help the little doubts that crept into her busy brain. It was terrible and conflicting. She wanted someone to be angry at, someone who deserved her shouting and scolding. "If you wanted help you shouldn't have lied! To my face, Theo. You sat in my home, Theo. You sat in my home and lied to my face! I trusted you and you stomped all over that!" She might have doubts over his guilt but that didn't mean she would excuse his behavior in the time since.
None of the lies or the guilt really mattered when Theo tried to comfort her, having spilled her heart all over his bedroom floor. Too many emotions were swirling around in the chest of the willowy witch to allow such a thing. There was grief for Frank and Neville of course, but she was also grieving the loss of the friendship she thought she shared with the accused murderer. This was a man that Luna cared about, someone Luna trusted. She was fond of him, even though someone else held her heart. All of this, these intense feelings of loss, was Theo's fault and he had the nerve to touch her. It was all instinct when she banished him away, not malice. Luna never intended to hurt him, she just wanted her space where she could think and process and continue to grieve. The man was looming with his tall height and his presence was crushing.
Theo didn't look so tall after she banished him away. He looked small and frail, curling up into himself. It was quite the feat for someone so long. She could almost feel her heart cracking in half at the sight and it was uncomfortable. Meg moved to assert herself between them and drew her wand and it prickled her temper. The wandless witch looked down at her hands in disbelief, turning them over and spreading out her fingers. The magic itched underneath her skin. "Put your wand away, Meg." Worse, more dangerous people had held Luna at wand point and it hardly phased her. Anger edged her voice but there was not a single trace of fear. "We both know that this isn't a duel you can win." She did need to go, sort out her feelings and figure out if they could move forward from this. Determine if she could ever call Meg or Theo a friend again or if what felt like their betrayals ran too deep.
She looked back up from her hands, face neutral. "I didn't mean to hurt him and I'm sorry that I did. I don't want to hurt you. Put your wand away." She didn't redraw her wand, but she didn't move either. Luna wasn't going to turn her back to an accused murder and his sympathetic and armed sister. It hardly seemed fair. No one flocked to Frank Longbottom's side when he was attacked. No one stood to protect him but here Meg was, defending the very man responsible for his death.
