The house was darkened, the children were off at one Weasley residence or another, and the time was reaching toward midnight. Remus stood in his bedroom with his wife, the both of them changing into warmer clothes. Fall was edging in, nights were growing chilly, and Remus and Tonks had a long night outdoors ahead of them. Remus paused in pulling on a shirt, catching sight of his bare torso in the mirror above the dresser. He traced his fingers over the fresh scars there, wincing when he touched the spots that were still pink. Those scars were a big part of the reason he was doing this, he was reminded again as he pulled on the rest of his clothes. The closer he got to actually doing this, the heavier the doubts set in. The scars were a good reminder, as was his conversation with his son a few nights before. Good people did good things. Mali had done a good thing for him. She had been faced with a tough decision, and a challenge, and she'd still helped him. She saved his life. In return, he was going to do a good thing for her. He'd been thinking about it for a while, really; there was more to his decision than just her saving his life. The more he got to know Mali, the more he believed her. Heck, he thought he might even like the girl, past accusations aside. He couldn't be stuck in this world of doubt forever. This was one of those situations where he had to choose a side eventually - believe, or not believe. Remus was of the mind that a little show of faith on his end might help him make that decision. If they got through this night with no problems, Remus might just be convinced of Mali and Theo's story - and thus, their innocence. This night was Remus' Good Thing. With the help of his wife, he was arranging a secret meeting for Mali and Theo. Neither of them had left their homes since going under house arrest. And judging from what he'd heard when he was Not Listening right before he took them to see Harry, Remus had an inkling they just might be missing each other. Who was he to get in the way of love? He felt sort of guilty, really. He couldn't get them off the hook, couldn't get them special privileges...but he could bend the rules, just for one night, without too much fear of repercussion. As long as everything went smoothly, that is. Remus had a feeling it would. Once they were dressed, the Lupins were off to pick up their companions. They hadn't exactly told Mali or Theo about this little secret meeting, in the interest of keeping it a secret. Risk proliferated with every pair of ears listening, Remus was acutely aware of this by now. That was also the reason for their choice of designated meeting spot - surely there would be no listening ears on the crashing beach shore in the middle of the night. Remus went to Mali's apartment and Tonks went to Theo's home; even if it was a surprise, it wasn't really like the pair could resist. Remus wasn't going to force it if Mali flipped out or anything, but he was so sure she would be happy once she went with him that he did go heavy on the persuasion. Eventually, he had his arm looped through Mali's and he popped them off to a pretty stretch of moonlit shore. He searched for his wife in the darkness, bubblegum pink hair eventually looming up out of the shadows - accompanied by a very tall shadow in the form of an apprehensive-looking Theo Ashland. Remus smiled and pointed their way as he began walking through the sand. "See? I told you I wasn't taking you to Azkaban." Mali Johar Theo Ashland

There were very few moments where her thoughts weren't filled with a tall, handsome man troll. It was agonizing to be cut off from Theo, especially when their parting words to each other had not been kind but were bitter accusations fueled by uncertainty and stress. Blame had been hurled back and forth and Mali had felt awful about it the moment they were each whisked away. She had a lot of time to mull over what happened and the standings of her relationship and despite hurtful things having been said by the both of them, Mali was sure that she was still madly in love with him. She filled some of the monotonous hours of her confinement by writing letters to Theo. It didn't matter that she couldn't send them, writing to him let her feel closer to him. Briefly she considered asking someone to deliver one or two to him, Ashley probably would just to thumb her nose at the Ministry. Eoin too, out of loyal devotion but Mali couldn't ask that of them and her conscience couldn't take it if they got caught. So she endured it, feeling the ache his absence left profoundly.
When Mister Lupin arrived at her door step Mali had been in bed. It was a smidge early for her but Eoin was working late and the discomfort her nightmares brought was becoming preferable to the flat grey feeling of her confinement. The knock jarred her out of a rare dreamless sleep and she climbed out from underneath the warm fur blanket made by three slumbering cats and one bristly niffler. A sleepy face Mali eased the door open, yawning and leaning against the door frame. Her feelings towards Mister Lupin had shifted quite a bit from their first meeting. Something was strange about him, not many went poking around investigating a Death Eater sighting on their own but she was sure his alignment was good and as much as his pressure to confess had upset her life she understood it. The man was soft and warm under the rough, scarred exterior. Even so it was strange to have him showing up on her door step so late and she was concerned that maybe he was hurt. She couldn't do much if he was, but they made it work last time, hadn't they?
Mali might have trusted Mister Lupin at this point but her paranoia at being thrown in an Azkaban cell and left to rot was very strong. When it was determined that he was intact her mind began racing with other possibilities, and she leaned out into the hall (making sure to keep her feet firmly planted inside the apartment) to double check that he was alone after inviting him in. He was apparently heading off somewhere and wanted Mali to come with. No, she wasn't supposed to leave and she didn't think that anyone would buy her story if she was caught out of bounds. Mister Lupin was very persistent though and Mali began to wonder if her trust in him was misplaced. Was this a set up? Was he here to lead her quietly off to Azkaban? In the end, she did trust him enough to go with him, damn him, and reluctantly changed, grabbed a jacket and allowed him to apparate them away from her apartment and London altogether.
Anxiety and hesitation fell away the moment they materialized on the shore. There was wind blowing through her hair and the smell of sea. It felt wonderful after weeks of confinement in a stuffy apartment that felt like it grew smaller by the day. The ocean stretched out farther than she could see. It's vastness felt freeing and the salty air seemed to melt away the tension. "I don't understand." she told her escort, turning to him. "Why are we here?" Not that she wanted to leave, not yet. Mister Lupin appeared to be looking for something or someone and that fueled the thoughts of a set up destined for Azkaban. It was a lovely place to get re-arrested, at least. The man spotted what he was looking for and headed off, Mali right next to him. She didn't dare wander away from him or give him any reason to think she would try and run away. He pointed out a pair of figures approaching, seemingly happy to point them and the fact that this wasn't Azkaban out. "But who are---THEO!" She didn't recognize the woman with the adorably unusual hair but there was no mistaking that large frame, even in the dark.
Mali couldn't believe--that couldn't be---but it was! It was really him! The sight of him stopped her in her tracks, a hand pressed over her mouth in shock. Oh Merlin, weeks without him and there he was and Mister Lupin brought her to him. The feeling of relief was overwhelming and Mali caught up with Mister Lupin. She had the urge to run past him, not to stop 'til her arms were wrapped around Theo but it would be a short lived reunion if the man got spooked and thought she was bolting. She tried her best to keep pace with Mister Lupin but eventually anticipation pulled her several steps ahead of him. "Theo! Oh my goodness!" Mali couldn't reach him soon enough and promptly pulled him into the tightest hug she'd ever given. "I'm so sorry for everything I said!" There was so much more that she could be saying now, but the apology jumped right off of her tongue. It was important. Mali was overwhelmed by the flood of emotion and happy tears prickled at her eyes. She hid her face in the crook of his neck and hugged him tighter, voice cracking as she said "I love you." That was important too.

Midnight meant nothing to Theo anymore. The few hours his brain let him sleep, if at all, resided very far away in the early hours of the morning when his body finally gave in to the utter exhaustion. His brain never got exhausted. When he wasn't feeling sorry for himself, he was feeling guilty. Sometimes he was lost in the reliving of the worst days of his life - committing murder over and over and over again in the hospital halls; standing in cramped office with Mali and other faces, yelling at her and then being dragged away from her - over and over and over again.
He thought about Mali a lot. She'd been his one thing, his little light in all this darkness, and not only had she been taken away from him - he felt like he'd snuffed it out. Now there was something to feel sorry for himself for. Mali was going through the exact same thing as him now, and he'd made her feel like it was all her fault. He said that to her; nearly right after he told her he loved her. You didn't do that to people you loved. He was a liar, a coward who couldn't take any blame for himself. Luna and everyone else, they were all right.
Theo no longer felt the flames of anger or defensiveness; not for any longer than a couple of seconds before they were blown out. He was too tired. Let them be right. He was a terrible person - just start at what he did to Mali and go backward from there, you'll see. Theo was in the midst of such a roundabout when he heard a loud knock on the door. Bloody reporters - didn't they know what time it was? When Theo was home alone, he had started to just ignore these visitors. Eventually they went away. His family was home now, though, sleeping - he could hear their faint snores down the hall. It was a bit late for shows of taking responsibility and facing consequences and all that, but the very, very least Theo could do was protect their sleep from the visitors he was bringing to the house. He pulled himself out of bed and went to the door.
The woman there hadn't visited his home before like so many of the other repeat offenders, but she was recognizable. Bright, bubblegum pink hair usually was. He was pretty sure he recalled seeing that head bobbing around the Ministry the day he went to confess his crimes. So, she was an Auror; Theo would have felt his blood freeze in his veins, if it weren't for the massive confusion surrounding the way the woman introduced herself shortly thereafter. Nymphadora Lupin. People called her Tonks. Sure, she was an Auror; but she was also Mister Lupin's wife. She beamed up at Theo, holding her hand out to him.
Theo lifted his hand, but it went to scratch nervously at the stubble on his face. What the...what the fuck? Was she trying to get him to leave? Did he really have to explain the concept of house arrest to an Auror? Tonks stared at him and Theo stared at Tonks for some moments before the woman just reached into the doorway and grabbed his arm, promising they were going somewhere fun. Theo had no chance at all to resist. No wand, and he couldn't exactly punch an Auror in the face. He had just enough time to grab a man's jacket (turned out to be Jon's, but it would fit) from the rack by the door before the pink-haired woman was tugging him outside and Disapparating the both of them.
The pair reappeared a short time later very far away from the Ashland home. They were on a beach, the wind whipping around them, the air positively salty. Theo had to admit it felt bloody spectacular, best feeling he'd had in weeks. Tonks still had a hold of his arm, and was tugging him along the sand. Theo went willingly, the unfamiliar feeling of a smile stretching unused muscles on his face. He had absolutely no idea what was going on, this could be the drop off point for Azkaban Island for all he knew, but Tonks' good mood was contagious and Theo was in no position to complain about being in such a lovely place after being stuck in his house for so long. Tonks didn't seem like she was about to throw him in prison, either. Surely such an occasion would be a bit more somber? The pink-haired woman was shouting down the beach now, laughing, and two other figures loomed out of the darkness. Tonks hurried her steps and pulled Theo along behind her, stumbling through the sand. He concentrated on not falling on his face while she completed the trajectory toward their apparent targets.
Someone shouted his name above the wind, and that prompted Theo to look up. In the thin light of the moon, he could see their faces now. Mister Lupin...and Mali. "What? For real?" His words stumbled as much as his feet. He was talking to Tonks but his eyes were stuck on the dark-haired witch hurrying toward him now, afraid the wind would whip her away at any moment and reveal this all to be a dream.
If it was a dream, it was a very solid one. Theo and Mali collided in a tangle of arms, very solid and very real, wrapped around one another. Theo immediately felt a warmth that had been lacking flood his system. Mali was talking, apologizing, but Theo was overwhelmed with how delightfully good she felt in his arms - solid, real, and warm. He near lifted her clear off her feet with how tightly he hugged her. When he was done trying to pull her as close as possible to him, his hands wandered to her face. He tilted her head to look at him, and Theo kissed her - too long to really be appropriate with two other people standing right there, but he'd been thinking about that for weeks. That said more than his words ever could, but he gave it a shot anyway, if a bit breathless after. "I didn't mean any of it. I love you so much." He barely heard the happy noises around them, eyes only for Mali, happy as hell to be in her presence. What else mattered?

Remus only smiled at Mali's confusion, once he got her out of the apartment and onto the beach. He had a feeling any words he could say would be far less effective than her just seeing for herself what he brought her here for. Once he spotted his wife and her charge and began walking toward them, it didn't take long. Mali was literally stopped in her tracks by the sight of Theo. Remus was an utter romantic, even if he only admitted it to certain audiences, so of course he was smiling. It was love. That's what he did this for, all of it - his belief that love was the strongest force in the world. It righted wrongs and answered the unanswerable. It took Remus far too long himself to realize that fully, so now he was here to spread the gospel. He tried to hurry toward Dora and Theo as fast as his joints would let him; Mali was obviously just barely restraining herself.
When they finally met, the two pairs, Remus wandered over to his wife and pulled her back a few steps, looping an arm around her waist. Mali and Theo were very, very happy to see each other - so happy in fact, that Remus had to look away with a slight tinge of color to his cheeks. He attempted small talk with Dora while the younger couple did their...thing, but Dora was having none of it. She had no shame in expressing her happiness at this reunion, too, cooing and awing and even cheering when the word love was passed around. Tonks didn't know these people. Her experience of them came from her work, and from her husband. Remus seemed to trust them and so she did too; he even seemed like he might like them, so Tonks decided to make that easier for him by sharing her unbridled approval. Two people so in love couldn't be so bad, could they?
When things calmed down a bit, Remus cleared his throat and looked back at Mali and Theo. "My thanks to you, Mali, for saving my life. I can't give you long, but we should be good for a couple of hours at least. We'll have to keep an eye on you, of course...but we can give you some degree of privacy. We'll be just down the beach." Remus slipped his hand into Dora's, and she squeezed it. "Oh! This is my wife, by the way; Dora. Some people call her Tonks." Tonks greeted Mali and winked at Theo before Remus pulled her away for a little walk down the sand.

The past didn't matter, the murders didn't matter, and the pair watching them didn't matter. All that mattered in the moment that their lips met was the fact that they were together now. No amount of past transgressions or prying eyes could ruin it. Theo's kiss added splashes of color and vibrancy back to what had become a dull grey existence. Mali smiled into the kiss but it regretfully broke and there was space between them again. Not a lot of space, mind you but even a millimeter felt vast after their weeks without so much as an owl. It was over, at least for now because the man was standing there, living and breathing, in front of her.
The word 'Love' sounded beautiful rolling off of his tongue. He was really here. Mali couldn't stop touching him, just to be sure. She took his face in her own hands, reveling in the feeling of his rough stubble under her palm. Fingers grazed over his cheek, combed through his hair. A clearing of a throat behind her snapped her out of her lovesick focus. Mali turned her head to listen to Mister Lupin, arms slipping around Theo's waist and heart plummeting, did they only get that brief moment? She was very grateful for anytime at all but.. No, he was thanking her. When had their relationship changed in a strange way, motivated by soul and life saving. Mali's eyes trailed down to the man's stomach, frowning at what she knew had to be nasty scars. It was hell working without a wand but working with someone else's wasn't much better. The magic was sloppy, not even dittany could help the mess she called healing. The (former?) Healer nearly interrupted him to ask him if he was healing alright but she bit back the question. A couple hours. It felt like more than they deserved but she'd gladly take a few hours with Theo before they were back to being isolated from each other. She waved at the woman with the pink hair. So this was the Auror wife he spoke about the first time he was her patient. Mali liked the woman instantly, she seemed fun and bubbly and just like someone you wanted to get to know. "Thank you. So much, thank you!" Words she wasn't so good with at the moment, later she would be able to express her gratitude a little more eloquently. The couple (They were cute and reminded her a little of Theo and herself) retreated down the sand and Theo recaptured her full attention.
"I--Wow!" Where did one begin when you hadn't seen someone so integral and important in weeks? "I really like Mister Lupin. I think we'd be friends if things were different." Or were they friends now? It certainly was starting to feel that way. They saw each other often enough and Mister Lupin was doing something incredibly kind for her. "They're risking a lot for us." An Auror and a Professor. Their lives would be ruined if they were caught. All four of their lives would be, any hope of convincing the general 'them' of their innocence would be gone if they were caught out of bounds. Enough about that, though, that would only lead to guilt at what their actions were putting others through. Mali smiled up at Theo, running her fingers over the stubble on his chin, trailing down his neck and to his chest to find his heart beat. Real. So, so real. The thump over his heart under her palm cemented it, this wasn't some vivid dream. "I've missed you so much."
They could stand there for the full few hours but Mali decided they should sit. She pulled him down in the sand with her, settling next to him with her legs folded. "Tell me everything. How have you been? Don't leave a single thing out." Before he could answer, Mali tilted her head up towards the sky. "It's a beautiful night. You can hardly see the stars in London." London was a bright and busy city, even in the middle of the night. It reminded her of one of her fondest memories, of them together in Meg's garden, Mali coaxing Theo to stay home and safe with her rather than going charging into a werewolf attack. She found his hand and laced her fingers through his. Mali would have to let go eventually, and it would come to soon but for now Theo was there. She had him, and she could pretend that she would never have to let him go.

No, in this moment, Theo didn't find it strange at all, actually; to be kissing Mali on a beach in the middle of the night while two essential strangers watched them. He was too lost in it. She was actually there, the only person he cared about being with from the moment he was forced away from her. Who cared how bloody improbable it was that it was actually happening? Just minutes ago, Theo was alone and miserable and totally sick of it; most likely, dreaming of a moment just like this and making himself feel worse because he couldn't have it. But he could now. It was right here, and he'd be damned if he was going to start questioning it. He had better things to do.
Not a lot of those things involved talking, but there were words involved. Theo was never very good with words, but he'd been waiting for weeks to say the ones he spoke now. He'd played them over and over in his head. They were important. If he wasn't able to say anything else to her tonight or for a long while after that, Mali had to know that he was sorry and that he loved her. Nothing felt more important than that. He hadn't been expecting this meeting, at all. There hadn't been time to really prepare, to really show her he meant it and make it all up to her, so he was totally relying on that gut feeling - hoping through sheer force of will Mali would just see how important it was to him. She seemed happy enough with him so far, touching him like she wasn't even really sure he was there. Neither of them could take their eyes off the other. If she was mad, she wasn't showing it. Yet. But Theo didn't want to think about that right now; he was preoccupied with the way the moonlight made her positively glow.
We all know how expert Theo is at pretending, so he very possibly could've stayed this preoccupied forever - Mister Lupin made sure to take care of that. He spoke up and for the first several words Theo still didn't look away from Mali until she broke their gaze. Then, he half-listened to what Mister Lupin was saying, playing with Mali's hair behind her head and generally being distracting. He heard the most important part, at least - he had a few hours with Mali now. Hours! He nodded his thankfulness to the man along with Mali as she spoke it, smiling awkwardly at who he now knew as Missus Lupin...who winked at him. Theo watched them go before turning back to Mali.
She seemed to be struggling with words too, which was adorable on her end. "I know," he murmured, surprise evidence in his own voice. His arms dropped back around her waist. What to say? They could talk about anything, at this point, and Theo would be thrilled just because he could hear Mali speaking it. The topic turned to Mister Lupin - an understandable turn, the both of them were probably trying to work through this in their heads. "He's excellent," Theo laughed, hardly even aware of what he was saying. He was too happy to even be mad at the guy who technically got them arrested. "I know. Everything's going to be okay." Just like he didn't care to think about improbability, Theo didn't care to think about risk, either. All that mattered to him was that they were both here, together. "I know," he said, one more time, looking down at her hand on his chest. "I can't stand being away from you. We were together all the time before. I've missed that."
Mali pulled him down into the sand and Theo went along willingly, of course. "Are you cold?" He put an arm around her, you know, just in case. Mali had questions of her own, diving right into the thick of things. She wanted to know everything. House arrest felt so monotonous and boring - but really, a lot had happened to Theo over these past days. He took a breath to answer her - but there was more. Theo smiled, tilting his head up to follow her gaze, more than happy to just let her talk. "It is. I wish we were at my house, they're even more beautiful there. As you know." He leaned over and kissed her cheek, mind wandering down the same memory as hers - maybe it was just the way they were sitting. "Have you been...okay? Getting through it okay?"

A grin felt foreign on her face now, it had been so long since she'd had a reason to do it. Weeks, in fact. But with Theo's fingers playing through her hair while she was trying to listen to Mister Lupin brought the biggest one yet. It was innocent and sweet, pure love and nothing else. It was distracting, true, but Mali managed to catch most of what Mister Lupin was saying as she reached up to guide his hand away while fixing Theo with her best attempt at a reproachful look. It was promptly ruined by a smile creeping back in, she couldn't help it. Mali felt like she was falling in love all over again, every little thing she missed about Theo was emphasized during their reunion. Gods, he was really here! Right here, playing with her hair and being adorable and wonderfully distracting. It didn't matter how many times she touched or felt him, heard his voice it was hard to believe.
Simple little words like 'I know' were nearly as sweet to hear as 'I love you' simply because it had been weeks since she was able to hear a single word from him. They could talk all night about nonsense or the weather and it would still be one of the best nights of her life. The words themselves weren't important, the company was. Theo was certainly her favorite company, no contest. "He really is." Mali agreed, nodding. "His wife seems nice, too." Mali was glad for that, good people needed nice people in their life. Mister Lupin certainly deserved all the nice people after what he'd given them. Mali had Theo, if only for a few hours. She could never repay Mister Lupin for that. All the talk about being together and missing things, Mali's hand left Theo's chest in favor of his face again. Fingertips grazed over his cheek, thumb brushing lightly over his lips and then his stubbled chin. She wanted to remember every inch of Theo's face, commit all it's lines to memory so she could remember it vividly when she missed him again. "Me too. I've written you a letter almost every day. Maybe you can read them when everything's done." There were some wordy declarations of love, heartfelt apologies and silly letters about nothing in particular. "It can't go on much longer, can it?" How long were they allowed to keep them confined without any sort of trial or finishing their investigation? It was maddening, that they couldn't really do anything to hurry it along. Sit and wait, let the aurors have their investigation. She was sure they were doing everything as quickly as they could, the wait was just agonizing. "We'll be cleared and then everything can go back. I'm sure of it." It was hard to be anything but hopeful in such a beautiful place with such a beautiful person.
Sitting in the sand with Theo was nearly as magnificent as sitting in Meg's garden with him. Mali leaned into Theo when he put his arm around her, telling him "Just a bit." Her fingers disentangled from Theo's so she could reach an arm around his waist, hand resting on his hip. He wasn't much protection from the cold sea breeze, truth be told, but he gave her a pleasant feeling in her chest that warmed her up from the inside out. Mali tilted her head as he kissed her, enjoying the sensation his lips left behind on her cheek. "I think the stars would be beautiful anywhere, as long as I'm looking at them with you." He made everything seem just a little brighter, stars included.
The conversation couldn't stay light and sweet forever. Theo led them into the awkwardness, trailing off like he was searching for the right word before settling on 'okay'. None of this was okay, it might feel like it now because they were together but it wouldn't last. "Mostly." she nodded before her head found his shoulder. If nights like this awaited them after everything was over, she could get through it. "I feel really guilty and people get awfully brave behind a quill."

Theo surely looked the part of lovesick buffoon, the way a wide grin spread from his mouth to all the lines of his face, as he stood there pretending to listen. Mali pulled his distracting hand away and tried her very best to scold him; he winked down at her and she was smiling again. When they were left alone, she indulged him his wandering hands, her own running over him like she was making sure he was really there. "I like her hair," Theo said after a moment, still a little dumbstruck from his meeting Lupin's vibrant wife. His hand returned right to Mali's dark locks, twirling a strand around his finger. "What do you think? Pink? I think it would look good on you."
Mali could have rainbow hair and polka dot skin; she would still be the most beautiful person in the world to Theo, it ran right down to her very core. She was writing him letters, for the sake of the gods. She was perfect. "I'd really like that," he nodded into her hands as they ran over his face. When she brought up the issue of their ongoing separation from one another, he kissed her fingers. Theo had no idea how to answer her; he had no idea how long this was going to last. He didn't like to lie to her; to him, it felt like this was going to last forever, and he certainly didn't want to admit that to her, either. But Mali sounded hopeful, so he would be too. "Can't be much longer," he agreed with forced confidence. "Maybe it's a good sign that it's taking so long - at least we know they're not making any rash decisions." When he was alone, Theo wasn't nearly as optimistic; couldn't even manage the feeling. He blamed the length of his house arrest on sluggish bureaucracy and idiot investigators. But being around Mali truly made him feel like everything was going to be alright; a shame he couldn't bottle that feeling up and take it home with him.
For the time being, he had the real thing, right by his side. "Want my jacket?" They were cuddled in right nicely with each other, but he thought he'd ask. And because no sweet moment between Theo and Mali would ever be complete without it, he threw in a little teasing, too, in response to her one heck of a line. "You're so cheesy." He kissed her on the cheek again; she seemed to enjoy it so much the first time. "I love it."
Theo settled his head on top of Mali's as he waited anxiously for her to answer him. She was 'mostly' okay, but that didn't really do anything to ease the anxiety. He wanted her totally okay, not having to go through the same thing he was...but there wasn't much he could do with a couple of hours to make it all totally okay. He'd have to work with mostly. He hugged Mali to him. "I'm sorry. People are pretty brave to the face, too, I've found - my sister is not happy with me. Have you had many reporters around your place? Awfully pushy."

Mali would've played the part of respectful listener well, she owed Mister Lupin and his wife her attention, but the wink did her in. It broke her resolve and she cracked a grin, biting on her lower lip to suppress a laugh. Theo quickly chased away thoughts of botched healing and nasty scars. There were no scars on his handsome face, and that's all Mali had eyes for, especially when their chaperones wandered down the shore to give them some space. Mali was glad for that, it would've been awkward for them to stand there and gawk at them. No amount of chewing on her lower lip would bite back the laugh when Theo mused over hair colors while coiling up some of hers around his finger. "Mm.. Dunno." she said lightly, taking a few loose strands to examine. "Maybe acid green, you know, to match my healer robes." Oh, that was a terrible path for her to wander down. Mali's face fell a split second after she mentioned healing and there was a sharp pain in her chest. Healing. She missed it desperately and was uncertain if she was going to be able to go back.
They didn't have enough time for her to fall apart, and the scruff of Theo's chin under her fingers brought her back to now, not the future. The thought was shoo'd from her mind and her smile was back almost as instantly as it disappeared. The pain in her chest melted away with the rest of her when Theo kissed her fingers, her heart thrilling. "They're not much. Just silly little rambles really." But she looked forward to giving them to him all the same. "Not talking to you is really hard." Harder than deciding to help him back at St. Mungo's. "Especially because I didn't know if you were really still mad at me." Their rough departure was bound to come up sooner or later and the words caught in her throat like a hard lump. The feeling of Theo under her fingers made it easier to feel hopeful, especially when he played along. She wasn't sure if she believed that he really believed it but she appreciated the effort. The edges of her smile strained a little and she nodded. "Yeah, maybe it is. They haven't found what they're looking for to damn us to Azkaban. It's encouraging, at least. It's just really, really hard. I miss you, and I'll miss you again when we have to leave. It's not fair." The emotions that were brought up began to threaten to break her composure, voice cracking but she managed to keep it together. Mali had cried enough in the past few weeks to last a lifetime and didn't want to take up precious time with tears now. Besides, anything was possible with Theo, right? Including getting through being away from him.
And Theo was so incredibly sweet, offering his jacket. "Maybe later." she said, snuggling in closer. "You're keeping me warm enough for now." Theo thought that she was cheesy and that made her grin grow and she could feel it in her cheeks. "I learned my cheesiness from the best. That's you, if you were wondering." He stole another kiss from her cheek, using that beautiful word again. Enough teasing, Mali caught his chin to turn his head, kissing him full on the lips. It was magic. Better than all the charms and potions in the world. "I love that." They couldn't kiss for a 'couple of hours' although Mali wouldn't mind trying, but there were things she had to know so she could stop worrying about Theo later. How Theo was coping, how Theo's family was coping. Her dads didn't quite understand when she explained it, but they tried to be supportive. Mali knew almost nothing of Meg or Theo's brother. And if people were saying vile things to her when she didn't even actually hurt someone... what could they be saying to Theo?
His comment about people being brave to his face hurt her heart, poor little thing that it was. She frowned, fingers tracing little circles against his side. "I'm sorry." They could both be sorry for each other, it was terrible. "S'not fair." She was back to fairness, it was hard not to be. Hufflepuff were just, giving her a strong sense of what was fair and what was not. The question of reporters made her insides squirm uncomfortably. Mali didn't want to burden Theo with worry about her own dealings with reporters and lying wasn't so hard anymore.. "A few. It's not too bad. Has someone else been mean to you besides Meg? Does she believe you?"

With how blatantly he was staring at her, of course Theo caught every little intricacy in Mali's face - like the way it fell when she thought about healing. Seeing her struggle - with the thought that they might not be able to go back to the job they were both pretty much made for - hurt Theo worse than the thought itself. He was the reason Mali was in this state, while all of this was happening to her; and there wasn't much he could do about it, except pull her a little closer. Try to make her smile. In the short time they had together, the least he could do was make her smile. "Do it." He released the strand of her hair to run all his fingers through it, smiling for her. "That's pure commitment to the career - they'll definitely have to give you a raise then."
Pretending wasn't really the most therapeutic course of action to truly heal them and get them through this, but Theo didn't feel he had the time he needed right now to help Mali. He just wanted to make her happy, just a little something to get by. "I love your silly rambles. I've missed talking to you every single day." At the very least, he could try to stay light and sweet himself, not weigh her down with his own vulnerabilities and doubts. "Of course not. I don't think I was ever mad. Just scared." He had to make her believe. Even if things got harder from here, it was imperative to Theo that Mali knew everything was going to be okay. Because she was hope and hopefulness and he would need her on his own dark days. He nodded against her as she spoke and her voice broke, hugging her tight. "Everything's going to be okay, Mali. I promise. They'll see the truth eventually, and we'll be okay. And then you're going to have to chase me off with a broom to ever get me away from you again." He grinned down at her. There were a lot of mighty lofty promises in that statement, but that one rang true. Even if his future freedom was a mangled version of its former self, he'd spend what he had on her, as long as she let him.
Theo would have liked to say it was his words that were calming Mali - but he was pretty sure it was just because he was cuddly and warm. Oh well. He would take it. "I try my best," he grinned, about both his warmth and his cheesiness. Hey, at least he was the best at something; and obviously, somebody liked it. He warmed and cheesed his way right into a kiss. "Me too." He could have stayed just like that for all couple hours' worth of their time, but the vague presence of figures down the beach implored him to behave - not to mention thinking about all the visitors he'd had in the past several days. That could put a damper on damn near anything. He shrugged. "Not a lot of people at all are happy with me, honestly. About as many people that believe me." He nudged the smile back onto his face; one look at Mali was all it took, and he reminded himself that's what he was here for, not to throw himself a pity party. He could, and most certainly would, do that on his own time. "I think she does. She's just mad about me keeping it a secret, I think. She'll be okay."
And thus went Theo and Mali's time on the beach. A little uneasiness, a lot of sweetness, maybe another kiss or two. And as much as they tried to fight it, time went right on. In no time at all two hours went by, and two figures were walking back up the beach toward them. Theo watched them as they approached in the weak moonlight with a frown tugging at his face. "I think it might be time to go." Mister Lupin said as much when he was upon them. Theo pulled Mali to her feet but didn't let go of her, finding himself unable to - and unable to speak. He simply looked down at her, waiting for her lead.

Mali's face dropped at the sight of Theo frown. It couldn't have been two hours already, could it? For a brief second, Mali was reluctant to believe it as she twisted around to see that the two figures were in fact making their way towards them across the sand. She felt heavy and weighed down with their meeting coming to an end. Theo was her splash of color against the depressing grey that had become life at home and he was being taken from her. Mali knew crying would only complicate things and fought valiantly against the sting in her eyes and the lump in her throat as Theo stood and pulled her up along with him. He looked down and she looked up. The moonlight enhanced his features, softened them.
A flutter of panic cut through the feeling of unfairness. What if this was the last time she'd see him? What if someone found out what they'd done tomorrow, shoved them each in a cell and threw away the key? Not just Mali and Theo but Mister Lupin and Tonks too. Their reluctance (or at least Mali's, she wasn't sure how reluctant Theo had been) to leave in the first place wouldn't matter, intent or lack of it apparently didn't matter to wizarding law or they wouldn't be here in the first place. But these were all things she could worry about later when she was at home, where it wouldn't take up the precious few minutes she had left with Theo. Mali leaned to peak around him to confirm yes, Mister Lupin was definitely serious about his claim that their time was up.
Mali pulled Theo into a hug. It could be their very last and the thought only tightened her arms around his middle. "I love you." she mumbled into his shoulder, holding him as close as she could manage. It could be the last time she got to say it to him so she pulled back, taking his face in her hands, thumb stroking against his cheek. "I love you and I'll see you soon." The last part felt like a lie with no definitive end in sight, but maybe he could believe it even if she didn't. Mali fought the tears back for the most part, crying would only complicate things for everyone but some sniffles and a tear or two managed to slip past her resolve not to make things harder than they already were. After tugging Theo down lower she placed a quick kiss on his lips, unsure of how much longer she could press their goodbye. The tingle on her lips persisted even as she let him go, the hardest thing she would do all night, and stepped back to wipe another stray tear from her eye.
It was a process, even as she stood back from him Mali couldn't help but look at him, fretting and biting on the inside of her cheek before she could finally turn away from Theo and to Mister Lupin. "Thank you." A hundred times over, she wanted to thank him. As difficult as it was to say goodbye she would be eternally grateful for the time they got together thanks to him. Her voice was thick and hoarse, keeping the thousands of tears she wanted to cry at bay. Despite feeling absolutely terrible at leaving Theo again, although this time with far less anger than before, Mali managed the weakest of smiles as she offered her arm to her escort for side along apparition.
