Mali thought walking into The Three Broomsticks to meet with Mister Lupin was one of the hardest things she would ever do, but she was dead wrong. This, walking into the Ministry to visit (hopefully just to visit) the auror department was even harder. The reason for her presence there wasn't hard, that was natural. People needed protection and Mali stepped up to protect them. First Mister Fischer, than Mister Longbottom and then Theo. She failed Misters Fischer and Longbottom and she supposed she failed Theo too, or they wouldn't be standing in the lift heading down to the MDLE. She wasn't alone. Theo was there of course and surprisingly, so was Mister Lupin. The man had goodness in his heart, despite having accused him of dark magic he somehow found enough compassion not to throw them to the aurors and let them fend for ourselves. She was grateful for that, even if she couldn't exactly look at him right now. She hadn't spoken a word to him other than an utter of 'thank you' when they met down on the London street. Mali didn't trust her voice enough not to show her fear through little cracks or quivers. The witch had hold of Theo's hand, clinging to it for dear life. They had to do this, sort of. Morally, they had too. Realistically? She could have refused to give Mister Lupin the details, discard it to delusional babblings from someone who nearly had their soul ripped out. No one saw them, at least no one who could tip off the aurors. They could have left the case go unsolved for eternity but no. Mali and Theo cared about them, they cared about what they and their families deserved and it wasn't that. But did they deserve this? The group arrived at the door and Mali paused, turning to Theo and taking his other hand in hers. "We'll be alright." she encouraged, forcing a strained smile onto her lips. "Whatever happens, we'll be okay. They'll believe it wasn't your fault." It was easy to say but harder to believe. She wasn't really sure that she believed it herself. Maybe they'd be thrown directly into Azkaban and left to rot. If that was the case, she had to say it now. She might not get a chance later. Mali bit down thoughtfully on her lower lip for a moment before she squeezed his hands and said "I love you." She'd known for weeks that she did, but was waiting for the right moment to articulate it. They might never get that moment, pending the outcome of the meeting. It couldn't go unsaid, it was too important for him to know. She hastily tacked on a "Everything's going to be okay." Mali looked to Mister Lupin, there were things left unsaid there too but she thought now wasn't the time to remind him of her hypocrisy. "Thank you for coming with us." She might not have deserved the kindness, having accused him of dark magic and covered up his friend's murder, but Theo did and she appreciated it. Now as ready as she'd ever be she knocked on the door and towed Theo inside. Her lungs felt tight with anxiety and her legs felt like lead. Mali managed to get them both over the threshold but that's where it stopped. Being in Mister Potter's office for the second time was overwhelming. She lied right to the man's face the first time. Mali wanted to be articulate, to eloquently plead their case before he had a chance to slap handcuffs on them but all she managed was an "Erm, Hello Mister Potter.." before looking to Mister Lupin for guidance. ___________________________________________________________ Remus Lupin , Theo Ashland and Harry Potter

Theo felt like a man marching to his death. Surely the architecture of the Ministry was done that way on purpose - oppressive and twisted - to force unsure men like him into doubts of their own innocence the deeper into the building they went. By the time the lift dropped them off on their fated floor, Theo was terrified to the point of numbness. He felt heat in his right hand, a crushing grip on Mali's, but that was all. What did it matter if he believed himself innocent anyway? He couldn't prove it. Mali couldn't either, not really. And no matter what Mister Lupin said, Theo was having a very hard time believing they were just here to talk - these tight corridors with their black marble walls didn't seem very interested in much talk. But he had no choice. He trailed Mali dutifully and tried his very best to look at no one and nothing, short of actually squeezing his eyes shut.
The only thing he cared for swimming into his vision was Mali's face as she stopped at a door and turned around to look at him. He wanted to so badly to believe her and that was written all over his face in a look of desperation and pleading. He felt like his only hope at this point was her conjuring the truth with her words, just like magic, but the walls all around them felt strangling even to that. He nodded at Mali, eyes cutting to Mister Lupin begging to him to just believe them, please, just enough so they wouldn't have to do this - but the man wasn't looking their way, very occupied instead with plucking a loose thread from the button on his coat.
Mali brought his attention back - it was never away for very long, even when he was sick with fear (memories of spiders that felt so distant now skittered briefly across his brain) - with a squeeze and three sweet words that plucked a chord so strongly in his heart it snapped clear in two. He had to bite back the rushing flood of emotion because these corridors were obviously having none of that, either. He loved Mali, dearly, and wasn't that just another thing he was destined to lose here in a few moments, behind that closed door? It wasn't fair. It was terrible to fall in love just to have something from your past (even the very, very recent past) snap it right up. "I love you," he could barely whisper, and he swiped a kiss across her cheek. He didn't know if everything was going to be okay but he knew that and not even the bloody Ministry and its terrible halls was going to squeeze that out of him just yet.
With that minutia of renewed strength, now was the time to get this over with. He was back to looking at nothing as Mali pulled him inside, scooting to the right a few steps so Mister Lupin could squeeze in behind them. Theo stood behind Mali like he could possibly hide his troll-ish frame behind her. He glanced for half a millisecond at Harry Potter's face and nodded before feeling an overwhelming wave of sick that made him look away again. He made quite the pitiful excuse of an adult human being, unable to look his problems in the face much less handle them on his own.

This was the right thing to do, he was sure of it, but Remus couldn't deny the dark cloud hanging over his own head as he descended into the Ministry. Maybe it was because of the veritable hurricane hanging over the heads of his companions - Mali and Theo were clinging to each other like they'd be ripped away forever if they dared let go. That was, Remus supposed with a pang of emotion, a possibility. He thought Harry would listen to him and look at this reasonably, but Remus was no Auror. Harry had obligations and protocols, just like the rest of the people Remus knew in the department. Maybe they do their dear old professor and friend (and husband, on occasion) a favor every once in a while - but certainly, this was pushing the limit. Remus was bringing a murderer and his accomplice to Harry - a pair with a believable story, in Remus' opinion, but one that couldn't be verified by anyone other than the two of them. Remus himself wasn't sure if he could ever undoubtedly believe them, but he believed them enough to try to give them this chance. They were good people, attitudes and accusations aside. Just scared. Remus reminded himself constantly of the questionable things he had done when he was scared, and that helped.
When they were off the lift and on their way down the corridor, Remus tried very hard to mind his own business and not heft his uncomfortable presence on the pair in front of him. Especially when they stopped in front of Harry's door, and had a...moment. Of course. They were scared, this very well felt like the end of the world for them. It was sort of sweet, really, not that Remus was paying any particular attention - there was a very interesting bit of thread hanging off his coat. He only looked up when he heard Harry's door open. Mali and Theo made a hard time of getting inside, moving reluctantly. Remus squeezed in behind them, standing on the opposite side of the door and looking down at Harry at his desk, a light smile for his friend even in this terribly awkward context. "Hello, Harry. I believe you know Mali, and this is Theo Ashland. Please, don't let me intrude. I'm just here for moral support, though I'd be just as happy to answer any questions you have for me." Polite and cooperative. Remus wasn't sure why he felt compelled to act this way, but he thought it might have something to do with the building he stood in. Murderous companions or not, this place would always look upon him with suspicion and he supposed old habits died hard.

Harry hadn't been able to focus all morning. He'd been doing paperwork, which wasn't inspiring on the best of days, but paperwork with the hint of something important happening at some point in the morning was even less so. He'd been jumping from report to report to report, occasionally spinning around and scribbling something on his map or adding a sticky note to his files, but unable to focus with a great fluttering in his chest. Remus hadn't been too specific, just mentioned Frank Longbottom, but that was enough to make Harry nervous. He wasn't just a case. He was a former Auror, a parent of a friend, a hero. Would he be able to remain objective in dealing with this situation? He was already doubting his impartiality, which was adding to the nerves.
But he didn't know what was coming, or when. Which was probably why he was rather surprised to see the little party troop into his office, consisting of one Mali Johar, a tall and lanky man who he vaguely remembered as a Medi-wizard at St. Mungo's, and Lupin. Harry stood to greet them, looking between the three of them with obvious perplexity, but did his utmost to remain professional in his greetings. "Remus," he replied, turning towards the man that he knew for a clue and being forestalled by his speech. Harry's brow furrowed as he turned back to the two St. Mungo's employees. "Ms Johar, Mr Ashland." Harry paused, eyes searching one face, then the next. "What can I do for you?"
Remembering himself, he gestured to the chairs in front of his desk, throwing another glance at Remus before scooping up some of his papers and sitting on the edge of his desk. He went to cross his arms, then decided against it, instead propping his hands on the edge of the desk behind him. It almost felt as though he was being tested, honestly, and he heartily disliked tests - one never knew when one was going wrong. Still, he had a job to do and he'd do it as best he could... as fairly as he always did. Schooling his expression into something pleasant and attentive, Harry waited to be enlightened.

Three little words were all it took to break her resolve. She bowed her head when Theo kissed her head to blink away the tears in relative privacy. Mali knew that this was right, that they had to do this especially since she spilled her soul to Mister Lupin but it hurt. It dragged her feelings of grief and regret out from their little boxes where she firmly packed them in the back of her mind. Self pity and the feeling of unfairness mingled with the heavy emotions. They didn't deserve what they had been thrust into. Theo was unwilling, a true victim in it all and Mali... she was reluctant. Neither of them were murderers and neither one of them wanted to leave their lifeless patients but it was all a reaction of fear.
The three of them filed into the room and Mister Lupin addressed Mister Potter, who motioned them to chairs. There was a small sliver of hope that he would tell the auror everything and they only had to nod along and confirm the details but he reaffirmed that he was there for moral support, not to sell them out but not to save them from having to confess either. The boy who lived motioned to the chairs in front of his desk and though Mali would rather stand the task set in front of her made her knees feel weak. Her and Theo's relationship was largely built on Mali leading Theo by the hand, sometimes literally. Like now, the (hopefully not former) Healer led the Medi-Wizard to one of the chairs and deposited him into it before taking the one next to him. Mali sat straight backed, perched on the very edge of the chair with her hands folded in her lap.
Mister Potter seemed as uncomfortable with this as they were, unsure of what to do with his arms. Mali looked to Theo for a quiet moment, lower lip caught between her teeth. He wouldn't be able to speak for himself, she knew that. "We needed to clear some things up." she said finally, lingering on Theo for an extra second before she could force her gaze to the Boy Who Lived. "I..." Her mouth felt uncomfortably dry, tongue lethargic and words heavy on her tongue. "Wasn't exactly---" There was no point in gingerly stepping around it. She needed to be blunt and clear. Mali glanced to Mister Lupin before shame forced her eyes down to the hands in her lap. "I lied to you the last time I was here." each word was an effort and it wasn't about to get any easier. "You asked what happened during the St. Mungo's attack and I told you I left. I want to tell you the truth. I didn't leave. I was about to but I went back to the spell damage unit." There was no turning back now, she started their confession and it had to be seen through. "My patients were vulnerable and everyone was focused on the lower floors and Mister Stark." Her reasoning for going back felt important, at least it was important for her. She wouldn't have changed her going back, that was one of the few things she didn't regret from that day.
You would think it would get easier, the amount of times she had recounted the events of that day but it never did. It wasn't as vivid as when the Dementors dragged that memory out of her but it was still painful and difficult. Mali closed her eyes, the details felt important now and she didn't want to get them wrong as she recalled them. Mali continued on without giving Harry the chance to interject. If she stopped she might never be able to force the words out again. "The Janus Thickey ward was open and it couldn't be. The door isn't s'posed to be left open, ever. It was and I know I should've gotten someone then but I wasn't thinking about that, I was too worried about the people inside. Theo was there, he must've opened the door because only someone who works at St. Mungo's can. It's supposed to be locked." Mali opened her eyes again, giving Theo an apologetic look. It was betrayal all over again to throw out his role like that. "He wasn't alone. There was a Death Eater there and she had him under the---the Imperius Curse." Her attention turned back to Mister Potter, searching his face for some indication of what he was feeling. He had to believe them because if he didn't then it was all over. Theo would be a murderer in the eyes of the Ministry, not a victim and she would be an accomplice to it. "You--I could tell he was off, that he wasn't himself. He was acting strangely. At first it was like he didn't realize there was an attack going on, he looked at ease and complacent chasing down Mister Fischer, like they were playing a twisted game of tag or something. I disarmed him." That was a miracle in itself and frankly she was still surprised the spell had worked at all.
"I tried to block him from Mister Fischer but the witch was whispering to Theo and he just grabbed my wand and ripped it clear out of my hands. I wanted to get it but he had his own back too quickly. I tried to talk to him, to reason with him. I wanted him to let me take Mister Fischer back to his room and he was nearly there. He almost let me do it, but the witch whispered again and she touched him and it was all over. He wouldn't because he couldn't. He wasn't at ease anymore, Theo looked confused and conflicted. I grabbed my wand and he grabbed his. His movements were even reluctant, he had his wand pointed at me and I tried to stupefy him but I missed. It provoked him, he was so confused. He used a jinx to knock me out of the way and then Mister Fischer was dead. He didn't have a chance. I don't even think Mister Fischer remembered he was a wizard, he thought he was a troll that's why he was there." Surprisingly every word she spoke was clear and free from the tremble of emotion. She looked terrible, like one wrong word from either Lupin or Potter would fracture into a million pieces but she was confident of every word she spoke.
Mali reached out to lay a hand on Theo's arm, nails digging into his skin. Mister Fischer's death was hard but Mister Longbottom's was worse. She cared for him longer than Mister Fischer. Years instead of weeks. "Theo was confused, he was upset. He didn't understand what he did or why I was crying or why Mister Fischer wasn't moving. The witch was laughing and shouting at him to do it again. I think she wanted him to kill me." That was an awful feeling. "Theo was very agitated. I made it worse. I was shoving him and screaming at him. I shouldn't have but Mister Fischer was my patient and Theo just killed him. It wasn't his fault and I knew it wasn't because I watched the witch manipulate him, whisper and touch him and work her stupid curse, but it--Mister Fischer was still dead. I think Mister Longbottom heard the commotion and felt like he had to do something because he came out into the hall and the witch recognized him. I think he felt compelled to intervene or something. He and Mrs. Longbottom remember what they were sometimes. Not all the time, but sometimes you can see a little spark of recognition or they seem very present." Poor Frank Longbottom, former Auror was damned by his faded memories of his former profession, spurned into action by what he used to be. "When the witch saw him she got really excited. She wanted him dead instead. Theo fought against it, he really really did but she grabbed him again and he was petrified but he did it." It wasn't as clean as just 'doing it', there was shouting and jinxes and blood, but it was too emotional to get into. To delve into the details would break her resolve not to cry.
"Then she just left." that was the most maddening part. Theo and Mali were left alone in the hall an instant after it happened to deal with the emotional fall out and there was a lot. "And Theo wasn't under her influence anymore. He knew what he did and he was crying and just..petrified. He wouldn't even hold his wand. They were both dead, Mister Fischer and Mister Longbottom. There was nothing we could do, I know because I tried." Again and again she tried to wake Mister Fischer. "They were just dead. Theo was... he couldn't face an auror or anyone in the state he was in. We were going to tell the aurors what happened, but Stark had just died and i didn't think anyone would believe us after that. Not with Stark assassinated. So we ran, we left and I got Theo far far away from the hospital. And here we are, telling you now."

Theo felt worse and worse with every second that ticked by. He thought the silent anticipation on the way here was going to kill him, squeeze all the air out of his chest - but when Mister Lupin began to speak, Theo broke out in a cold sweat and a set of shivers that moved him to cling to Mali's arm in order to quell them. Moral support. Moral support - when had bloody moral support ever kept anyone out of prison? Feelings of intense regret poisoned his gut; Theo thought he might actually throw up. He looked at Mister Lupin imploringly, begging him to say something else because Theo could barely open his mouth, until Mali pulled him into a chair. He sat awkwardly, feeling too big, definitely still not looking at Harry Potter - and then Mali began to speak, and all of his attention was back on her. This was it; and oddly - definitely not what he expected - that felt sort of relieving. Or maybe it was just the fact that Mali was doing it for him. He was never going to be able to do it, and all things considered, confessing was probably better than getting caught out.
And boy, what a confession. Mali dropped the proverbial bomb, leaving no room for anyone else to get a word in edgewise. Not that Theo was going to say anything; he was too busy reliving his very own nightmare, one of his own creation. Almost as soon as Mali's story started, he dropped his head into his hands, trying to be subtle in how much he felt like pulling his hair out right now. His head was pounding, leg bouncing up and down nervously - every part of his body felt like it was trying to run far, far away in a million different directions. That was a nightmare version of himself that Mali was describing, and he wanted to get away from it as much now as he had the moment after it all happened. So he could pretend it didn't happen, because that's how Theo coped with things - so what the hell was he doing here now, admitting that he did it? Theo was getting worked up with his nerves. They shouldn't be doing this. Why had she told? Why was Mister Lupin selling them out like this? Mali said he was going to help them, but right now, Theo felt like everyone in the room was against him. He was really trying hard not to feel that way about Mali, too, but it was hard with how terribly guilty he felt over forcing her into this mess. She remembered every little detail of their encounter, as evidenced by her lengthy story - she probably relived it more than he did, every single day and night. Could she really actually love him with that kind of daily reminder?
Theo raised his head at the sensation of nails digging into his skin; Mali was holding on to him for dear life as she got to what very well could be the nail-in-the-coffin portion of their story. From what Theo understood, all these people knew Frank Longbottom somehow. Made sense, as a former Auror, he supposed - though Harry Potter was awful young. Theo's sister's age, at least. He didn't know how these people were connected, but he could see they all cared deeply about Frank. Just like he himself did, just like Mali did. He slipped his hand up into hers, shaking his head in her peripheral vision. Stop, just stop. This was all wrong. They weren't doing this right. Admitting to Mister Longbottom's murder was as good as a guilty verdict. Surely these people wanted justice for their friend so badly that they would take just about anything at this point. Here were two perfectly good people to throw into prison! Theo still couldn't speak; he squeezed Mali's hand, hoping against hope for her to stop - but she didn't. She went on and finished the story, right up to the point where the two of them left their dead patients laying on the hospital floor.
When she was done, Theo rested his head against his fist, but his attention remained on Mali this time, even as Mister Lupin began to speak his precious moral support. He searched her for any indication that she was feeling the same massive amounts of regret that he was, because Theo was feeling very wrong about this. Those feels of this being his duty to confess, fragile to begin with, were reduced to dust under the weight of having to relive what he'd done again. Because what he had done was very awful, and now other people knew, and where else did his world have to go now but up in flames?

Remus moved into a chair as most of the attention in the room moved to Harry. Remus was no Auror, or investigator, just a man who knew when certain people needed to talk to other certain people. He folded his hands in his lap and waited for assistance to be requested, if need be, and nodded at Mali when she glanced at him. She'd done it before, tell her version of things, he knew she could do it again. It was a story he'd heard before, but all the same Remus prepared himself to listen very closely. He wasn't totally convinced of the pair's innocence (not of their guilt, either), so any discrepancy, any little off detail...he was ready. He leaned in ever so slightly as she began to speak.
All was pretty much the same. The Imperius Curse, the fighting and the hesitation - the murders, during which Remus cast his glance down in respect - and finally, Theo and Mali's departure. Remus didn't watch Harry as the story was told; the younger man was perfectly capable of feeling his own feelings and thinking his own thoughts, and Remus had full confidence in his ability to handle this all professionally. Their relationship was different now than in Harry's school years, in some ways. In a way, Harry was the one in a position of authority now. Remus was still more than happy to advise and give his opinion (moral support, he called it), but this was Harry's call at the end of the day and he didn't want to influence the boy. Remus did chance a glance at Mali and Theo, though he didn't really need to. He knew what he would see there, and it was both relieving and heartbreaking to see that not much had changed since last hearing this story. Theo was still distraught and distressed; Mali was powering through but obviously still feeling that grief and remorse. They were either the world's best actors or they were, on some level, genuine. The task at hand now was finding what level that was.
When Mali was through - and it was clear Theo wasn't going to be doing any talking - Remus sat forward and held up a finger to interject before anything began. He wasn't here to influence decisions, but he thought a little more clarity about why he was here was definitely called for. "I would just like to explain my role in this a little further as well, Harry, in the interest of unbiased justice. Mali confessed this story some weeks ago to me, and I feel I must explain why we are only stepping forward now. I think, as you well know, accusations of the Imperius Curse are tricky business. I would have come to you immediately had I thought this was just another case of someone trying to get away with something. I think I can confidently state that I do not believe this to be so. It is not my place to determine the guilt or the innocence of these two. I, as I'm sure everyone else feels too, only wish to discover the truth."

This was, quite possibly, the stiffest meeting Harry had ever had to go through - and that included the time that the Department had decided that all the Aurors needed to sit with a therapist. That had not been a fun day. Harry had been on the other side of the desk then, answering questions brief and to the point, feeling like he was being pried open with clumsy fingers and his chest pawed through with a careless hand. If the three on the other side of the desk (well, two; he was fairly certain Remus wasn't here to confess anything - Remus was a model... anything, really) were feeling at all the same, he could empathize. It was with that thought that he kept his features as even as possible, as careful as he could, because no matter what they brought him, he wanted to be fair.
He kept that mantra at the forefront of his mind as Mali Johar began to speak. He reminded himself of it as she looked him in the eye and said that she lied, glancing to Ashland and Remus with a cautious flicker of a look. Harry stilled his hands with effort and tilted his head, listening intently. The first few sentences weren't a shock, not really. He'd had a feeling that Mali hadn't left, something about her tale hadn't quite added up. She wasn't confessing, though, just talking about going back to see her patients. What could be wrong about that? Maybe she'd just seen something. maybe...
But Mali closed her eyes, and Harry knew with sickening certainty that she hadn't just seen something. She'd seen someone, or many. She'd seen Theo, in the ward, where Frank had died. I will be fair, he reminded himself sharply, gaze flickering to the Ashland, hoping that his expression was nothing but attentive. I will be just.
He couldn't hold onto his expression for a moment when she mentioned the Death Eater and the Imperius Curse. He looked between the two of them, gaze steady and thoughtful, eyebrows coming together pensively. It certainly sounded like Death Eaters. Maybe one or two in particular. But he'd have to be sure. Propping his chin on his folded fingers, Harry said nothing, letting Mali tell her tale, knowing she couldn't be stopped in the middle or it would be impossible to start once more.
When the unfortunate Mister Fischer died, Harry's eyes flickered between the three - Lupin, Ashland, Johar - to see what their reactions were. Remus was neutral, thoughtful - but he'd heard it before. Theo looked sick, downcast, like a small child caught in the principal's office. And Mali looked terrified, though her words were strong. But the worst was yet to come, he knew, and he reminded himself once more - I will be fair - as Mali and Theo linked hands against his judgement.
He'd seen the aftermath. Neville had been, and still was, a wreck. Luna had wept, for both Longbottoms, and many others had joined in. Harry had felt numb emptiness, terrible sadness for his friend, anger at the cause. But they'd never known how, or why, and hearing it was somehow worse than watching Neville's red eyes, because he knew what he had to do. Fair. Just. He could not feel rage, or grief, or despair for the loss of his friend's happiness, their parent's life. He could not judge Theo and Mali too harshly. And he had to try to empathize, or at the least - the very least - he had to listen. So he listened. To Mr. Longbottom's death, to the breakdown that followed, to them fleeing. Of all things, strangely, he was least able to forgive them for that.
In the space that followed, Harry took in a deep breath, then another, rubbed at his eyes once, and looked up at Lupin when he started to speak, as if hoping the older man would say it was a joke, or that he had a solution. He didn't, of course. Harry knew he didn't. That was Harry's job, and Merlin, how he wished it wasn't. He cleared his throat, trying to speak evenly. "Thank you for bringing them, and for your input," Harry told Remus, unable to smile but knowing his sincerity showed in his eyes. He turned to the other two, waiting for judgement. "And thank you for coming in. I know that was difficult."
Harry took a moment to pause, tapping a finger thoughtfully on the desk. Fair. I will be fair. "I'm going to be straightforward with you," he told the two of them, laying his hands flat on the desk. He could feel his heartbeat through the palms, hammering out an uncertain beat into the wood beneath them. "This is not an easy subject for me. This is not an easy subject for anyone. This - this -" murder? incident? Merlin, no word softened the blow- "death is a sore spot to many people. You've done the right thing by coming to me, but the right thing is not the easy thing." Harry met their eyes, spreading his hands in supplication. They didn't shake, at least not very much. Fair. "Remus says that he, in his objective opinion, does not think you are being deceptive. I trust Remus. But I have to find out the truth. And that's not going to be comfortable for anyone."
Harry sighed and sat back, running his hands through his hair, disturbing the curls that lay over his scar. He shoved his glasses further up the bridge his nose for good measure. "From this point, consider anything you say on the topic will be recorded, possibly through the use of a pensieve, for investigation." he informed them. "It is within your rights not to say anything at all, but I would urge you to do so because the more I know means the more likely I am to come to realize the truth. I will be fair. You have my word." He sighed. "If you are willing to tell me, I need to hear from you," Harry told the Ashland. "Ms Johar's explanation was very thorough," he nodded at Mali, "But your wand and your hand are responsible. Tell me about the Death Eater. Tell me what led up to that Tell me about what the Imperius curse felt like." he glanced at Remus, hoping he was doing alright. "Anything at all. If you're willing to speak."

Mister Potter listened to her... their story and didn't try to interrupt, much to Mali's relief. She doubted very much that if she stopped she would be able to continue their story again. Theo's head shaking and panic beside her didn't make it any easier, she couldn't look at it, couldn't acknowledge it because her own resolve to confess was weak at best. She expected a strong feeling of relief after spilling her soul, no longer burdened by keeping a terrible secret, but the feeling never came. All that she felt was anxiety that reached it's peak when Mister Potter tapped his fingers and let silence hang between them. It felt like her lungs tightened up and she couldn't breathe, and words like 'straightforward' didn't make it any easier. Mali tightened her grip on Theo, she should have let go of him long ago but now that grip was the only thing anchoring her in the room. Her head felt light, her heart raced and all speculation was thrown to the wind. They weren't merely wondering worried about what might happen, it was too late to turn back now as much as they might want too.
Harry Potter might have listened without interruption but Mali couldn't give him that same consideration. There were important things that needed to be said, things that she and Theo needed them to understand. "Deaths." she said firmly, emphasizing the plural. "Deaths. There were two. Mister Fischer was---he's dead as well. " That irritated her more than it should, she should embrace the fact that half their crime was overlooked but Mister Fischer deserved acknowledgement. "They're both difficult for us. It may be hard for people to wrap their head around but we cared for both of them. We took care of both of them." If only they could have seen it unfold or the aftermath, they would see how much the patients both mattered to them. There was no 'I' or 'Him'. Them. Completely in it together.
Mali flinched at the word 'deceptive', glancing to Mister Lupin. She wasn't sure if she believed him, she wanted too but there felt like there was still an air of suspicion or doubt around them. None of this sounded good, even if Mister Potter managed to appear unthreatening and even. The witch bit down on the inside of her cheek to stave off tears before they welled up in her eyes. At the word 'pensive' she looked back to Mister Lupin, this time for guidance with her eyebrows raised with a hint of panic written across her face. "What is..?" but her attention returned to Mister Potter almost immediately. They should talk, of course. Mali had every intention of cooperating even if through use of pen-whathaveyous, if necessary. Mister Potter gave them their word and that helped mitigate some anxiousness, he was the boy who lived, surely his word meant something. He was a good person, people didn't save the world because they were bad people.
Theo was thrust into the spotlight. Mister Potter wanted to hear his side of things, what he felt like, and there was nothing Mali could do to help him through it. She looked at Theo now, finally, with a mix of regret and sympathy. "I'm sorry, I can't answer those for you." She could do a lot, tell them exactly what happened but not how it felt like. Mali wanted to protect Theo from all of it, from having to confess and drudge up those feelings himself but she couldn't and that felt terrible. "It'll be alright." Her grip moved from his arm, down to his hand, fingers lacing together.

This was awful. One right after the other, they all had something to say - Mister Lupin, Harry Potter, and even Mali; and all Theo could feel was his throat closing up and his head on fire. What did any of these words matter? What happened, happened. They weren't going to be able to change any of it by rewording it into something thoughtful and pretty. In Theo's mind, he felt they were just trying to intimidate him - Harry Potter, and Mister Lupin as well. Goad him into saying something he didn't really mean in order to get their confession and move on. They were just lulling him into a false sense of security so their fatal strike was as quick and effective as possible.
Obviously, Theo wasn't thinking clearly at all. He was confused and frightened, not unlike that day at the hospital. The feeling that the whole world was again about to crash down on his shoulders was indeed a hard feeling to ignore. It crept into every corner of his brain, poisoning everything else there. Mali interrupted Harry Potter to speak, and for some reason, Theo found it wholly irritating. Why? Why remind the bloody Auror that he killed not one, but two people? Theo cut a glance at Mali as if she really was betraying him. The feeling wasn't deep, superficial and largely made up of fear and confusion, but it was there; and it couldn't be ignored.
Especially considering Harry Potter wanted him to talk now. Suddenly, all the attention in the room was on Theo, burning him like stage lights. Suddenly, he was angry. They were treating him like a child; all of them, even Mali. Even though his emotions and thought processes at the moment were very much on par with a child's, it still made Theo angry. They were trying to get him to incriminate himself, he knew it. Mali's explanation was perfectly thorough, but oh no, they had to hear it from his mouth too. Yeah, right. They just needed one little slip up and they knew Theo was the one to give it to them - because they thought him nothing more than an overgrown man child. Had to be. And Mali had the audacity to tell him everything was going to be alright.
"No, it's not," he pulled his hand out of hers, nervous energy pulling him to his feet. Large and brooding, such sudden movements didn't do any favors in a man like Theo, not when he was surrounded by people that didn't trust him. He forced himself still, glaring at the wood grain of Harry Potter's desk. "It's not alright. I know what you're doing. You've got me all fucked up in here and then when I mess up, oh, there's your evidence! He's a murderer, throw him away!" He was gripping the edge of the desk, white-knuckled. Turning his neck to look at Mali was met with strong resistance in his tense muscles. "This was a mistake. Why did you make me do this?"

There it was. That look of betrayal that she knew was coming. Mali caught it out of the corner of her eye, to see it full on would have been too painful. She swallowed hard as if it could possibly brace her for what was surely festering ahead. Everything felt fragile, like it was waiting for just the right moment to fall apart. Her emotions were a whirlwind. Regret at earning such a look from Theo, anger that he was complacent to allow people to overlook Mister Fischer, and so much sadness for the situation as a whole. They roiled in her very core, stewing together and threatening to pull her and drowned her in them.
Theo wasn't doing well as the center of attention. He gave the impression of a cornered animal, licking it's wounds and unsure of where to strike first. It didn't take too long before Theo figured out where to lash out for the fullest effect, he pulled his hand away from her. Mali looked like she'd been slapped in the face, disbelief and hurt edged her tear reddened face. She followed Theo up onto his feet, it was better for her to try and diffuse him than to let the other two do it. "You are alright." she said firmly but gently, one hand laying at the small of his back, the other over his to try and coax one away from the desk. Merlin knew all they needed was for Theo to break Mister Potter's desk, that'd make things go swimmingly for them. She flinched at both the harshness in his voice and the use of vulgarity, the scold of 'Language!' sat on the tip of her tongue but she managed to bite it back, not the time or the place for such things. "Stop it." Her words were a little less gentle now. "That's not true at all, everyone just wants to sort this out."
And then he turned on her, figuratively and literally. Mali was physically taken aback, her own hands left him as she took a step away. Mistake? She made him do this? "Because." her voice was laced with bitterness and defiance. Every thing she'd done for Theo and he was going to turn on her the moment he felt the slightest consequence? That hurt. Normally Mali would crumble into a crying mess, she was good at crying, but she was too angry for tears. "I'm tired of lying because of you." Her own words were just as sharp and as harsh as his and aside from a tiny flitter of guilt, she didn't regret them. They were honest and raw. "I don't lie, I never lied before I got tangled up with you and now I'm lying all the time! I don't want to lie, I don't want to carry this around like some dark, dirty secret! That's why I made you do it! It needed to be done ages ago but you're such a bloody child you wouldn't have done it at all if I hadn't made you!"
Mali left Theo, she stepped away from him and returned to her chair. If he wanted to stand alone in this, then by Merlin he can stand up there and grip Harry Potter's desk and even break it for all she cared. She lied for him, she abandon two dead bodies on the ground for him, she hid things from those she cared about for him and then he turned on her like that. A very irate Mali sat back down in her chair, crossing her arms firmly over her chest and set to very pointedly avoiding looking at anyone. Theo, Potter or Mister Lupin. She would just stare at the bloody floor.

Ah, the verdict. Neither Mali nor Theo looked at ease as he spoke, but the words weren't easy. He had to say them. The law was the law, and if he - as the arm of the law, or the wand hand - wasn't fair and honest, what kind of system was there going to be? Theo looked like he was retreating inside his own head whereas Mali was all too aware of what was being said, even going so far as to correct him. Harry paused. Rubbed at his forehead, covered by messy hair, and dropped his hand. "Yes," he sighed, very conscious of his mistake. He met Mali's eyes directly. "Yes. I know. I'm sorry." And he was; for forgetting Mister Fischer briefly in the loss of someone "more important" (as he should not be doing), and also for what he was going to have to do.
It wasn't that Harry didn't think they were innocent. The more they acted and reacted, he had very little doubt on an empathetic scale. But that wasn't how law worked, and now that they'd come to him he had to come up with a solution. What did he do? Set the two of them loose in the sea of interrogation and interviews, probably a trial without fair evidence, with a biased Wizengamot? Mali looked like she was about to cry; Theo looked like he was about to stop breathing; Harry felt like he was going to burst with frustration at the situation he was now in.
Fair. Just. Thoughtful. Harry let out a long breath, gaze moving to Theo as Mali murmured condolences, and was taken aback by his response. Theo stood in one movement, towering over the desk, and Harry's jaw tightened, working with the effort to not respond in kind. Theo was scared. Theo was panicking. Theo had killed two people. That was an awful thought, and Harry hated it, just as he hated this, the rational side pitted against his natural emotional instincts. He laid his hands flat on the desk, not reaching for his wand, and tilted his head up at Theo, famous green eyes narrowed in thought.
When he turned on Mali, though, Harry decided that enough was enough. "Theodore," he said flatly, cutting through (hopefully) the haze of emotion that was going on in the older man's head. He'd like to order the man to sit down and apologize, but somehow he thought that wasn't going to help. Push and Theo would push back, a cornered animal ready to lash out and hurt people, even the ones he loved. "I need you to listen to me." Harry gave him a pause, and then cut his gaze down to Theo's hands. "You're welcome to break my desk - it's an ugly piece of work - but this is not helping you. I am trying to listen. I know what the Imperius curse feels like, which is why I need you to tell me what you felt, by way of evidence of your innocence."
He pushed his chair out, slowly coming to stand, giving him some extra height to meet Theo's gaze with. "You want to help yourself? You want to help Mali -who wants to help you, by the way - ? Then you talk to me." Harry kept his hands flat on the desk, posture relaxed but tall as he could make it - not intimidated, but not aggressive. "I've already got a confession. The fact that I'm still listening should tell you that my aim is not to send you away." Harry raised an eyebrow at Theo, and then stepped back from the desk slightly, turning to look at Mali. This entire thing was a mess. He had people talking about murder and Death Eaters and blowing up in his office, and he had to remain bloody neutral and just and -
"There's a kettle on the cabinet over there," Harry told Mali, keeping his tone even, "If you want." Tea, after all, was the panacea for all ills - though after this, he was going to need something much stronger. Finally, Harry met Remus' eyes (and his expression remained calm, though Remus could probably read his gaze). Of all the people in the room, Remus was the most reassuring. The other two certainly weren't the most relaxed.
