Minerva surveyed the Great Hall imperiously, clad in deep purple robes that were almost black and a matching witch's hat. Her very posture spoke 'no nonsense', and that's what she wanted to convey to the few lucky adults who were currently set up in the Great Hall, ready to enlighten young witches and wizards about different kinds of jobs in the Wizarding world. There were Aurors and Healers, shopkeepers and curse breakers, and many more scattered around at small, 10- person tables around the room so that students could drift from table to table to ask questions and listen to what there was to be said. The students were about to file in any minute now after their classes, and though Minerva was fairly positive that they'd head to the buffet table at the very front of the room before talking to any of the career witches and wizards who'd shown up for their benefit, she hoped that the day would go off swimmingly. She clapped her hands once, addressing herself to the room at large, and called out, " I hope you're all settled. Please help yourself to refreshments, but I advise you do it sooner than later - before the students descend," she smiled. " Thank you once more for coming to the school. If you need anything, please let me know - I will be circulating." She paused to allow for any questions, and then waved a hand at the doors of the Great Hall, sending them floating gently open to the Entrance Hall. " Let our first Career Day begin!" she called cheerfully, as the students started trickling into the gap and looking around the Hall for where to begin. __________ The adults have all already been settled at separate tables, and their posts should reflect that! Students have just arrived. Feel free to mingle, ask questions, and have fun. Feel free to imagine more careers represented than those who are playable characters! NPC adults are also in the room. _________ Career Day People: Alec Wayland - Quidditch @lyra - Auror Meg Ashland - Hospitality Lyall Santel - Ministry @nicole - Dragonologist Luna Lovegood - Publications Jihoon Oh - Wandmaker Eoin Cavanaugh - Pharmacist/Potioneer

Post by Meg Ashland on Sept 20, 2016 3:18:56 GMT
Meg was bouncing on her heels with excitement - well, she had been up until very recently; now she found herself seated at a table in the Great Hall, more sort of...quivering, with excitement. The Great Hall! She couldn't describe in words how great it felt to be back at Hogwarts, just broad smiles and random exclamations of excitement. Working in Hogsmeade, she was always close, but longing looks out the window were nothing compared to actually being back inside the castle. Meg had a lot of fond memories in this place, even during the bad times. Actually, during pretty much her last time in this exact Hall, it had been a place of grief and loss as the Battle of Hogwarts wrapped up. But being back in it didn't make Meg feel sad; it made her feel proud. Hogwarts rebuilt itself. The sacrifices of her friends weren't made in vain.
Hogwarts was even improving, as if that was possible! Professor McGonagall (it was Headmistress, now, wasn't it? That made Meg smile) had certainly done a whole lot in an incredibly short amount of time. Not that it surprised Meg. The woman was amazing, if a little strict. She supposed it took discipline to accomplish something like this. Hogwarts was having a Career Day - Meg wasn't sure Hogwarts was even allowed visitors back in her time. And here she was now, a full grown adult (by some standards), back in the Great Hall and ready to teach some students about the wonderful world of Hospitality.
Looking around at all of the other careers represented in the Hall, one would think Meg would feel sort of silly, just a bartender and all. But Meg took her job very seriously. In her opinion, hospitality was a cornerstone of the wizarding world. Wizards and witches were ambitious travelers, creative geniuses, and all around busy people. They often didn't have the time or space to take proper care of themselves - and that's where people like Meg came in! She was committed to taking care of the essentials - food, board, friendly conversation - so the wheels of the wizarding world could keep on spinning. Meg loved her job, and she signed right up when McGonagall put the call out for career representatives.
And though she was proud, Meg was also reasonable. She knew she might not attract the most attention today. There were some seriously cool people sitting at the tables around her (including Luna, who's gaze she was busy avoiding). Curse breakers from the bank, dragonologists, and Actual, Real Life, Alec Wayland (gods, he was just as handsome up close as he was on a broom). But Meg was prepared. She had a broad basket sitting on her table, and it was filled with tiny bottles of butterbeer. Sure, there was a snack table up front...but who could resist the tiny, cute bottles? Meg had novelty on her side, if nothing else. Meg smiled politely up at Professor McGonagall as she opened up the Hall to the students, awaiting any curious little ones.

If Luna were honest she didn't truly have enough time to attend a career day at Hogwarts, her research had been suffering for multiple reasons and she was in a crunch to get all of her articles together to print but she thought investing in what would be the wizarding world's future was important. So, she shuffled things around and was prepared to work late into the night after she was finished here but Luna made time. She was looking a little... stressed. Wild blonde locks were a little more frazzled and tangled than usual, her socks actually matched and she was fussing with a stack of handouts she'd prepared, reorganizing and smoothing them out. She didn't have a basket of butterbeer to hand out but she had pairs of spectrespecs and quills with the Quibbler logo screen printed into the feather to give away. A good reporter needed a good quill after all. She hung various clippings from her own newspaper and a few of the milder articles from the prophet up behind her on the wall. Her favorite article was the one The Quibbler published the day after Voldemort fell. The article was filled with stories of heroism and quotes from actual participants in the battle. It served two purposes, as a visual example for her topic and as a gentle reminder that good will always triumph over evil, even when the odds were stacked against the light side. Luna was happy to be back at Hogwarts, to see it restored to it's former grandeur and not in sad shambles having been destroyed by the darker side of the wizarding world. It brought back some of the fonder memories of her time there and gave her a distinct warm feeling in her belly. The wispy blonde was smiling vaguley, gaze wandering to the various occupants of the room. She should like to hear their career day spiel, learn about things like dragon keeping and curse breaking. Then there was Meg, who was busy not looking at Luna and Luna was very busy pretending not to care. Well, then. Her attention wouldn't let her sit still for too long and eventually she abandon her booth to slowly tour around the Great Hall, hands clasped behind her back and head swiveling to take in her entire surroundings. She was quite enjoying herself 'til she collided with the corner of Eoin Cavanaugh's table. "Oh!" she exclaimed bouncing off the table and regaining her balance. "You're a pharmacist? How interesting. How does that differ from a potioneer, exactly?"

Alec stood behind his table, full of too much energy to sit. The tall beater had his arms crossed over his chest, stance casual and a half cocked grin on his face as the students started to filter into the hall. His ten person table was draped in a Puddlemere blue table cloth, the actual league trophy standing as a shiny centerpiece. There were little Puddlmere freebies littering the table. A basket of squishy stress relievers shaped like golden snitches, complete with wings that fluttered when you squeezed it. There were stacks of team pennants, paperweights shaped like little beaters bats with the team name stamped in the side. It was a nice little layout, if he did say so himself. Sure to draw a crowd.
He was glad to be there, standing in the Great Hall. He didn't necessarily feel the nostalgia that others did, he enjoyed his time at Hogwarts no doubt, would be nowhere without it but his life since then was fulfilling but he liked reaching out to the younger generation. Maybe there was a shy kid in the crowd who'd find his niche in the Quidditch team and bloom, just like he did. The intentions behind his presence at career day were mostly genuine but there was a slight ulterior motive. He was Team Captain and that meant he was responsible for making sure his team had every advantage possible going into each season. To do this he needed to keep tabs on the upcoming talent, figure out who needed to be approached close to graduation about trying out for the reserves. It wasn't just skill he was looking for either but enthusiasm. It didn't matter how good one was at catching a quaffle if they lacked the motivation and passion for the sport.
Alec drew a lot of attention, even before the students were allowed in. He was one of the more popular Quidditch stars so it was only natural, a little awkward but he did his best to put on a polite, charming smile and wave whenever he caught the eye of his fellow career day guests. He thought he caught the blonde at the hospitality table staring or at least trying not to stare once or twice. The beater ran a hand through tousled black hair, smiling as the first students approached.

Jihoon wasn't quite sure how long he'd been working on the last set of wands, but the headlines seemed to imply that he'd been in Inventor Mode for quite some time. He was, rather frankly, quite startled at the turn of current events. He'd been in the Alley during the Dementors, of course, but he'd merely ushered people into his little workshop at the back and made hot chocolate, requesting quiet until everyone had calmed down. And he'd probably been writing poetry about Minjae's eyebrows or something the coming of fall or playing with Jungkook the bunny instead of attending the gala. Which, while good for the other attendees as he was highly likely to commit a social gaffe, meant he was rather behind the times.
Still, he had taken a suggestion from his boss and applied to be part of career day at Hogwarts, talking about wandmaking and the skills it required. It was a tricky and nuanced work, but ultimately very rewarding, and Jihoon would happily talk for days about core properties and woodworking with any student who asked.
He had a little scale set up, much like the wand weighing at the Ministry but much less imposing and far prettier, designed to show the owner of the wand exactly what it was made of. In addition, he had samples of some of the prettier cores and woods out for students to touch and identify, and a few semi-finished wands. All in all, he had cleaned up nicely, and he was ready to begin! He'd spotted Luna floating about earlier, and hoped he got a chance to talk to her - he had rather enjoyed their intellectual discussion, and was curious as to how her wandless training was going - but she looked a bit preoccupied, so he merely folded his hands, adjusted his glasses and waited with a dimpled smile for the first student to float by.

Lyall looked round at the hall from behind her table, fiddling absently at the locket round her neck. How long had it been since she'd been here? At least 33 years, how they'd flown. Her smile grew as the Headmistress spoke - she'd heard great things about her, and even with only a glance she could tell they were true. One look at the regal, no-nonsense posture told her that Minerva McGonagall meant business. She respected that, always able to recognise authority.
She looked at the other tables, examining the other career options. A wandmaker, a Quidditch player (he was famous, yes?), an auror (but of course - auror was a popular choice, not many seemed to think of the danger) and more. She knew that her table wouldn't be the most popular, not with all of these other options. Still, she was happy to share her experience with anybody who wanted to listen.
Her set up wasn't very impressive compared to some (was that butterbeer at the hospitality table?), but it served the purpose. Some leaflets on different magical creatures, seeing how they were the main part of her job, and lists of possible Ministry jobs. It was mostly going to be advice and answering questions, was that wrong? She sighed slightly, almost laughing at herself. Going back to school had turned her back into the questioning child she had once been. She sipped at her water as the students trickled in, waiting for visitors.

Tobias wasn’t sure why he even bothered coming here. Not because he was only in his 4th year despite turning sixteen this school year and would still have years to decide. No, it was because he knew that if he graduated his options would be very limited. He had been hopeful when King found him and told him he could return to Hogwarts and pick up where he’d left. However all those hopes had shattered in August. The werewolf attack on Godric’s Hollow was the start of a domino effect which was sure to ruin his chance of a future. How much longer was he even allowed to stay here? The orphanage had already gotten rid of him, Hogwarts would be next. But there was food. And food was always one way to persuade Toby. It was one of his weaknesses. The boy decided to stay in the front and eat until time was over. After turning a quick gaze at all the boards naming each adult and the job they were presenting, Tobias shook his head. This wasn’t meant for people like him. He was munching a toast with a piece of ham on it when his eyes caught the face of a middle aged woman. She didn’t look like anything special, just your regular neighbor. But Tobias knew that face from the newspapers and the name Lyall Santel which was written before her only confirmed his thoughts. She was the head of that department. Tobias seemed to have lost his grip on the plate as it fell and shattered on the ground. The noise was muffled by the loud chattering voices. His mouth felt dry and if looks could kill the woman would have dropped dead just there. Toby felt the urge to attack, to curse her, to harm her. It took all of his control (of which he did not possess much) to turn around and leave. Unfortunately the way was blocked by students who were coming in. He needed to get out! He needed to get away before he’d do things he’d regret. “Get out of my way,” he sneered to whichever student was blocking his path and he shoved this person aside not caring who it was. (OOC: Feel free to let your student be the one he shoves and yells at)

Lyall was talking over some of the finer details of becoming a head of Department when a loud crash reached her ears. She jumped, darting round to see a boy, a boy fixing her with a truly angry look. He wanted to hurt her, she could see that, and it scared her slightly. The look on his face was the most poisonous she had ever seen in her 50 years, and she had seen many.
Excusing herself and giving a convinient leaflet, she walked towards the fuming child, thankful for her flat soled shoes when she had to speed up to catch him. She watched him shove a student out of the way, and as she reached out her hand, her mind flew through the reasons for hatred. The legislation. That was obvious. So was it a relative? Was it him? Was it a vampire? A veela? A werewolf?
After what seemed like an age her hand touched lightly on his sholder, and she spoke in her calmest, most soothing voice. "Are you alright? Come back to my table and we can discuss why you appear to hate me so." She smiled slightly, nodding her head towards her station. Perhaps she could explain herself, explain her department. Explain that she had absolutely nothi g to do with this bloody disgraceful legislation!

Madison wasn’t totally sure why she was attending the career fair. She was only a fifth year, so it wasn’t like she needed to have her life figured out at this point. Not like most of her friends, who were sixth or seventh years. But supposedly there were going to be pro Quidditch players, so there was that. Maybe she could get an autograph. And the Nicole person Mikko was always going on about, the one who worked with dragons, was supposedly coming too. She sounded pretty cool from all he’d said. Worst case scenario Madi could at least grab some free snacks. She was almost to the food (might as well start with the good stuff) when another student slammed into her. Madi caught her balance in time to see @julia7 headed past her looking hell bent on something. Toby had never been someone Madison was exactly fond of. He was too harsh, like there was always a fight boiling right under his skin. Not that Madi couldn’t appreciate a good fight. She’d been in a few herself. But with Toby, it was different. More… feral. It was worse since he had come back. Madison was actually a little relieved he wasn’t in her year anymore. He could be a real ass sometimes. Like right now. “Watch it, Turner,” she said angrily. His shove had made contact with her scratched shoulder, which still acted up sometimes. She carefully rolled it while glaring daggers at Toby. Who the hell did he think he was? Things very likely would have escalated, but an adult appeared from somewhere. Great. Let them deal with him. Madison had better things to do with her time. Like approaching Alec Wayland , for example. The irritation melted away from her face as she caught sight of him standing near a booth. No freaking way. Wayland was here? Awesome! Madi made a beeline for the table, weaving her way through the students already gathering around his booth until she was right up at the front. As a beater herself, Wayland was one of her idols. A chance to be this close to him was gold. Especially if she really did decide to take a crack at going pro. She had certainly talked about it with Mikko and Wolf. How cool would it be if they could all play together after they graduated? But right now Alex Wayland himself was right bloody there, and Madi needed to think of something intelligent to say fast if she wanted to stand out. He said something about questions, and Madison immediately piped up. “If someone wanted to play pro after school, would you have any advice for them?” She was quite proud of how respectable that sounded. Not Quidditch obsessed at all. Not like her hand was at this very moment rifling through her pocket for something he could sign. Nope. Not her.

Alec's table quickly drew a crowd of enthusiastic students, some seeking legitimate advice and others, starstruck, were seeking autographs. He'd signed everything from crumpled up parchment to an actual bludger in between answering questions. Some were very thoughtful, others seemed to be asking questions just to be noticed. It was amusing and the lazy grin on his face never left. He spoke honestly and openly about anything the students brought up. How much he made, favorite and least favorite part of playing quidditch, if he and the rival teams were really buddies off the pitch. He and Cass were good friends, he and Avery not so much. Most teams didn't take their on pitch rivalries to heart. He'd have a firewhiskey (edited to butterbeer for the younger ears) with any of them and gripe about how blind the ref was or how the wind had been working against them that match. There was a small kerfluffle, someone shoved someone else and he paused to look past his gaggle of students. Alec set down the paperweight he was fiddling with and was prepared to intervene when another adult got there first and he resumed his little career speech, reaching for the mini beaters bat to keep his hands occupied. The questions were starting to get a bit repetitive now but one girl, part of the kerfuffle, had wandered over and pipped up with one of her own. It was a good question, one that implied the girl at least had a level head on her shoulders. Had she looked a little older he might've investigated a bit to find out her name and add it to his mental persons of interest list. (Aje and he went way back and Quidditch days. He could always ask him.) "Hmm." he said thoughtfully, scratching at his clean shaven chin. There were a few answers he could give here but he didn't want to be discouraging. "Make Quidditch your job." he finally settled on that, with a nod. "If you think you'd like to head to Hogsmeade for the weekend grab your broom and head out to the pitch instead. Got a little time after homework? Work on you flying technique or Quaffle handling. Be persistent and disciplined. But, and this is very important, as much as you make Quidditch your life, don't slack on your academics. Have a back up plan. Half the castle wants to play professionally after they graduate but there are only a handful of spots." The beater tossed the small beater bat up into the air and caught it again. "I mean.. Some teams like the Canons'll take anyone who'd play for them but if you have standards." His grin grew as he pictured what Cass' reaction would be like. It was for the fans, really. Those who really bought into team rivalries. "There's only a handful of spots." __________________________________________________________ Madison Kingsley

As a sixth year one would think that Jas had some sort of idea about what she wanted to do past Hogwarts. Professional Quidditch would be nice, she already lived and breathed the sport but Jasmine was a realist. While she might be the best keeper at Hogwarts (in her humble opinion) she likely wasn't the best in the whole wizarding world. There wasn't really any field that interested her more than the others. The auror department seemed interesting enough but the Ministry as a whole seemed shady as of late. Dragonologist sounded cool but she was sure the novelty would wear off with the thousandth burn wound. Healing might've been up her ally, she liked making people feel better but potions? Eh. A reporter seemed too much like doing homework and writing essays for her liking. As she strolled around the room she eliminated virtually every booth or table as an actual career option but that didn't mean she was above grabbing their freebees. Her robe pockets were brimming with nicknacks like quills and paperweights, little pamphlets because hey! they were free. Her tour of the Great Hall paused at a table with a pretty blonde woman and little mini bottles of butterbeer. They reminded her of the airplane alcohol bottles her parents got when they flew somewhere and they were cute. There wasn't much traffic at the woman's table so the Gryffindor took a seat and reached for one of the bottles. " 'Ello. You look a bit lonely. What profession d'you represent? Brilliant bringing butterbeer. I'm sure people'll make their way 'round to you soon." Shameless, Jas popped that bottle into her pocket and reached for another one, smiling sheepishly and reasoning out "Can't let the butterbeer go to waste on the off chance they can't make it past the aurors and Quidditch stars, now can we?" The curly haired lioness popped the top off of her current bottle and took a swig. "Names Jas. I think I've seen you in Hogsmeade before, haven't I?" ___________________ Meg Ashland

Nicole still wasn’t really sure how she had gotten talked into this thing. Mikko’s darn puppy dogs eyes probably. Seriously, the kid needed to find a way to bottle that. He could make a fortune. Not that she minded too much. Any chance to show off her work. Although somehow she got the feeling this was also a chance for Mikko to show her off to his friends. If he could pull himself away from the Quidditch stars so many of the kids were fawning over. Nicole might be cool most of the time, but if Mikko realized Alec Whatever was here, she was pretty sure she would become about as good as chopped liver. (Although who made their team’s initials PU? The jokes pretty much wrote themselves on that one.)
All in all the bunch of adults gathered here seemed pretty standard for this sort of thing. Not that Nicole had ever actually been to a career day. She’d known what she wanted to do from the minute she was old enough to understand what a dragon was. But still. There were healers, reporters, Quidditch players, and even a few more obscure jobs like wandmakers and curse breakers. One of the bartenders from Hogsmeade was also present, complete with Butterbeer samples. Nicole had half a mind to head over there and snag on for herself. Although firewhisky would’ve been better. But whatever. Corrupting young minds and all that.
Nicole herself had brought a bowl from New Zealand with an aboriginal pattern and filled it with coins from all the places she had been. It had required some spellwork to produce that many copies, but now there should be enough that each interested kid could grab one. (She told a young boy in blue robes as much, watching him dig through the bowl for one from China.) There were a few dragon teeth on the table too from various breeds just in case anyone was actually interested in seeing how they compared. She wasn’t here to draw the students in though. Dragonology wasn’t for everyone. The ones truly cut out for it would already know that somewhere in their gut. They would come on their own. Nicole just had to wait for them to show up. And make sure she snagged Mikko at some point, although she hadn’t decided yet if she was going to play the cool older sister or try to embarrass the hell out of him. Maybe a little of both. Served him right.

The girl he ran into seemed rather pissed, well so was he. He looked and saw a girl he recognized from his first year, they’d been in the same class before he dropped out. The boy shot her a glare. He hated being called by his last name but is anger was already occupied by someone else, he didn’t have time for Kingsley. He needed to get away and passed her without apologizing or saying a word. Nothing good would get out of his mouth at the moment so it was better to stay quiet. Alas the clash had held him up. He felt a hand on his shoulder. In one smooth move which was purely done on instinct he hit the hand away and with his other hand he grabbed his wand. Turning around he pointed his wand between the eyes of whoever touched him. “Don’t touch me,” he hissed before he saw who it was. The anger in his eyed turned to pure fear even if he tried to maintain an intimidating look. He was utterly terrified of this woman and the Ministry. The woman’s voice was calm and soothing. Lies. Lies. Lies. He’d seen it all before. He had fallen for this trick before. “I don’t need to discuss anything. Half of the country hates you and for a good reason. Think about that first,” he sneered at the woman, he had no respect for adults if they didn’t deserve it. “Get lost and leave me alone.” Toby lowered his wand and wanted to move on. Alec had just finished answering the girl's question when commotion caught the corner of his eye. The boy causing said earlier kerfluffle had his wand out and pointed it at the Ministry woman. While he was sure an adult could handle themselves against a student he still thought the gentlemanly thing to do would be to head over and offer his services. He looked to the Gryffindor girl who'd asked the question, inclining his head regretfully "If you'll excuse me for a moment, Miss." Alec shoved his hands inside his pockets and headed over to the scene unfolding. The child had just spit out a nasty comment at the woman and was in the process of lowering his wand. "Hello." he said conversationally, a brow quirking. "Cowards draw their wands on unarmed witches." The Quidditch player lifted his chin, searching the room for Minerva McGonagall , she'd lose her hat if she saw how the student was behaving. Hell hath no fury like the Headmistress scorned. "Everything alright?" Alec asked, looking towards Lyall Santel . He shifted his weight, stance casual and relaxed but shoulders tense. He wasn't much of a fighter but Alec couldn't let disrespect go unchallenged, even if it was from a petulant teenager. Not many were fond of the Ministry, but the woman was just doing her job and taking time from what was surely a busy schedule for the students. His attention shifted to the kid, tilting his head. "What career are you most interested in? Come on, mate. I'll walk you to the table. Mine's Quidditch, there are some other cool ones too." ________________________ @julia7

Mikko was psyched for this day; first of all there would be no class and second of all Nicole would come. She hadn’t been a Hogwarts student so he found the chance to show her where he spend most of his days. He’d prepared a little extra for today. Mikko wouldn’t be Mikko if he let this be a normal career day. Specially for Nicole he’d sewed a dragon suit, or rather it was an attempt to. It looked like it could fall apart any moment but Mikko was sure it’d last a day which would be enough. He even made little wings for Smudge as the cat never left his side and he needed to match. “Ooh!!.” Upon entering he found food and put a sausage in his mouth before he went looking for Nicole. He’d find his friends later and do a little round but Mikko had already decided he was going to be a dragonologist. Maybe he would take a part time quidditch job next to that to stay in contact with his friends. But his priority were dragons. He found Nicole’s stand and saw his chance to try out the costume. He grabbed his wand and charmed the fake wings. Alright he got this, they started moving. It was something but they seemed to need an extra kick to actually make him fly. Mikko did just that he put another charm over them and bounced himself(actually he levitated the suit and he was dangling in it) from the ground with a levitating charm. “Woah.” Okay this was quite unstable but it looked good, right? “LOOK NICKY!! I’M A REAL DRAGON!” He yelled as he tried to move himself forward but he just seemed to be levitating above the ground in the same place. Shit this wasn’t going as planned. This experiment wasn’t a complete success. Now he started making swimming movements, which must have looked really odd as he was sort of swimming in the air. In the meantime Smudge had already approached Nicole and judged Mikko from there. Nicole was in sight and he grinned with his usual goofy grin. “Hehe I told ya!” He said as he levitated above her and messed with her hair. Alright enough time to get down. Mikko tried to grab his wand to end the spell but lost grip and it fell on the ground. Oh oh. “Nickkyyyy help me get down, pleeeeeease?” @nicole , costume but then in his size
