One would think that Mali would be enthusiastic about the task of the day. It was a chance to get out of her apartment for a few hours and would very likely bring the house arrest to an end. Mister Potter was going to view their memories and it was supposed to exonerate them of any speculation of Dark associations. The more she thought about it, the more terrifying it felt. 'Out' seemed dangerous now, with Death Eater and Being attacks in the Prophet almost every other day, some small and others more organized. Mali marched along with Harry Potter, looking uncomfortable and sick. His letter had encouraged sassy barbs to be thrown on their jaunt down to The Leaky Cauldron but she couldn't muster up much to say at all. The city streets were too overwhelming after months of near isolation in a small, quiet apartment. The everyday sounds of London, car engines and chatter as the muggles went about their day, felt like a dull roar against her ears. Traffic signals and lighted storefronts were glaringly bright and hurt her eyes. It was a relief when they finally reached their destination and ducked in to The Leaky Cauldron, dampening the cacophony of public life as they shut the door. Or maybe 'relief' just meant a different type of discomfort. It was midday and the pub was fairly empty but Mali couldn't shake the uneasy feeling of eyes on her from the moment they shut the door. It could have been her imagination, her own insecurity and feelings of guilt manifesting but it made sense. Her face had been in the Prophet a lot in the past few months, printed along with some nasty insinuations that pandered to the wizarding world's sensitivity to Death Eaters. Mali made a point of not looking to confirm either way, keeping her head down and eyes low as she trailed along with the auror towards the back where there was a private room waiting. It was sparsely decorated, a collection of chairs around a table that had been topped with an interesting looking shallow stone basin. It was decorated with runes (which Mali wished she would've studied in school) and filled with a strange sort of fluid in it. It was intimidating, giving her thrills of anxiety. She could only assume that it was the Pensive that Mister Potter would be using. There was an uncomfortable tightness in her chest and Mali anxiously bit down on the inside of her cheek. Nervous little habit. That thing on the table would be used to scrutinize her memories, or Theo's memories, or both. It would highlight her inadequacies as a witch for a very powerful wizard. Mister Potter would have likely been able to stop Theo and save both Mister Fischer and Mister Longbottom. He could produce shield charms and could probably actually hit people with his spells. She felt nauseated and miserable, moving to sit in one of the chairs before her head started spinning. "You're sure that this will clear everything up? Can I have my wand back after you've seen the memories?" Even if she was inadequate, she wanted it back. Mali missed magic, not using it left a built up and sluggish feeling, an unscratchable itch to cast spells. Mali's gaze was locked on the pensive even as she spoke, only leaving it in favor of the door when it creaked open for the arrival of Remus Lupin and Theo Ashland.

Theo was feeling decidedly vague about today. It felt final, whatever was coming, for better or for worse. This was the first they'd heard from Harry Potter in weeks, and surely that meant something. Something was about to change. Theo was desperate for change, he couldn't stand being in his house anymore, he only hoped he wouldn't be trading one cell for another. Surely this memory thing would work. It had to. He had nothing to hide. His only lie had already been long exposed - the cover up of the incident in the first place.
So, Theo was hopeful. But, admittedly, he wasn't exactly excited about reliving that day yet again. He'd never heard of the process Harry detailed in his letter, but it sounded painful. He hoped Harry would be able to pull the memory from him without his having to think his whole way through it again. He'd done that enough. If today was going to be final, it was going to be the end of that, too. Of reliving his worst nightmare. If Theo could just escape his physical confinement he might finally be able to work on the imprisonment of his mind, too.
For that, there was one person in particular he would need help from - and as always, Theo was excited to see her. That made all those vague feelings a little easier to ignore, his excitement at seeing Mali again. Today would be hard on the both of them; but this time, if they were lucky, they might not have to leave each other afterward. Theo was practically beside himself with this possibility. When Mister Lupin finally arrived on his doorstep, Theo was beyond ready to go.
Mister Lupin was a bit more subdued than Theo, as he had been the past couple of times Theo had seen him - not that he could blame the bloke at all. Poor guy. Theo was sort of glad for it, really - when they left his house and were actually in sight of the Leaky Cauldron, all that excitement and vagueness in his chest clamped down, tensing him up. He wasn't sure he could actually hold a conversation. Entering the pub, Theo's attention immediately went to the bar, but he stayed dutifully trailing Mister Lupin. Somehow he didn't believe getting drunk would be conducive to memory gathering, even if it would ease his anxiety.
Mister Lupin took him to a backroom and opened the door. Theo followed him in, sweeping his gaze over the thing on the table and nodding at Harry Potter, before his attention inevitably went to Mali. She didn't look like she was doing too good; Theo tried his best to smile for her as he went around the table. "Hello," he leaned down to kiss her before settling into the chair beside her. Then, he looked back at Harry Potter, whom he strangely always found it sort of hard to directly look at. "Let's do this."

In the face of everything else, here was one thing to be happy about. Remus managed a small spark of excitement for his new friends today. The world didn't need anymore heartache and Remus had done everything he could to make that so. He couldn't be absolutely sure until the decision was handed down from the powers that be, but Harry finally seemed to be moving things in what Remus wholeheartedly believed to be the right direction. Surely today would be the beginning of the end of Mali and Theo's torture. They could get back to what was important, living and loving and being free to do all those things.
Remus was sent to pick up Theo, who seemed even more hopeful than he about today. That was good. From the little Remus knew about the man, he was very obviously a slave to his emotions. Not that Remus could judge him one bit in that matter without being a huge hypocrite; it was just good, because having hope would make today a whole lot easier. Remus foresaw today being quick and painless as long as they all just kept it together.
When they arrived at the pub and the private room, Remus cast a worried glance over the expression on Mali's face - speaking of keeping it together. That expression reminded him with stark realization how hard today was going to be, regardless of any feelings of hope or optimism. There was nothing quick and painless about having to relive the worst day of your life. A glance up at Theo confirmed that they were once again on the same wavelength on this, the tall man looking suddenly much more withdrawn. Remus sighed and went to Harry.
"Hello, Harry. How are you doing?" He observed the younger man critically. Dora's death was hard on all that knew her, not just Remus. He would never be so selfish as to completely deny the grief of others because of the intensity of his own - he just had to hide away from it sometimes, when it ached too much. Remus patted Harry on the shoulder before returning to the table, sitting across from Mali and Theo. Theo was ready. Remus turned his critical eye to Mali and asked, "Are you ready to do this?"

Mali looked sick, Harry mused, and he honestly didn't feel much better. If she looked that apprehensive at sharing her memories, the odds of them being pleasant to experience were not good; not to mention that he was going to get to watch Frank Longbottom and the unfortunate Mr. Fischer die. The thought was a stone in his gut, jostling uncomfortably as they wove their way through Muggle London to the Leaky Cauldron.
It was only lightened by the fact that this was the right thing to do, and he knew it. He wondered at not thinking of it sooner (more guilt), even if it was understandable - it was getting harder for him to do productive work at the Ministry, harder to file things, harder to investigate, and as such he'd been working a lot recently to dig through it all - but with a Pensieve the truth would be revealed. (useful tool, that).
Oddly enough, Tonks' death had been the thing that had set him in motion. Harry had barely had time to grieve, and at first he hadn't even understood, positive that it was a lie and that he'd see Tonks at work the next day. But she hadn't come the next day, or the next, and the next, and he'd been forced to accept that someone very dear to him was gone, and that things were no longer going to be the same. That moment had pulled his emotions in every direction - empathy and worry for Remus and the little Lupins, fury at the culprit, and an awful gloom - but had also made something very clear to him.
The world was not safe. It (maybe) never had been, and that was a shock to Harry, who'd spent the last 5, 6 years of his life actively working to make it so. He wasn't doing enough to fix it, he wasn't pushing enough to change things. And that had to stop. People couldn't wait around- they were dying, they were hurting, they were suffering every day, and if Harry could do just one thing to fix that he would know he was going in the right direction.
Like this one; something he should have done a while ago.
At the least, Mali and Theo would be free, their wands returned - he had one of the clerks at the Ministry on standby, ready to give them back the second formality allowed. But first they had to get through today.
"It doesn't hurt," he reassured Mali as they wandered into the room, the Pensieve waiting for them on the table. He had his hands shoved in his pockets, though his wand was ready if he needed it. He opened his mouth to keep talking as Mali sat, but she spoke first. Harry pushed his bangs out of his eyes and nodded. "Yes," he said, gently as possible. "It's easy to tell if memories have been altered- there will be no doubt that your memories are real and true. A few formalities of filing for me and you'll be all set." A lot of formalities of filing, in fact, but Mali didn't need to know that - she probably felt guilty enough.
Theodore Ashland and Remus Lupin joined the little gloomy party, and Harry nodded at Theo - though the man had no interest for him, heading straight to Mali. Harry couldn't help it, his lips turned up a little at the sight.
Remus crossed to him and asked about his wellbeing, making Harry have to actively resist the urge to raise an eyebrow. Remus was one of the best of them, he mused as he murmured a hello. If he lived up to be half the man that Remus was, Harry had no doubt that he'd be going in the right direction. "Not too bad," he said easily, gaze searching on Remus' face. "How about you?" The question was calm, with no expectation - Remus could say 'terrible' or 'good' and Harry wouldn't pry - it was more of a statement of support than a question.
Everyone was seated but him, and Harry leaned on the back of a chair, feeling a bit too antsy to sit. "I promised to let the two of you work it out," he said to them now, adjusting his glasses. "If you don't want to go through this, then that's fine. It's up to you who goes, or goes first." Harry shifted his weight. "It shouldn't hurt, but you will have to recall the memory to mind for it to be, er, copied. And then I'll be viewing it in -" he gestured to the Pensieve, then turned back to the two, waiting for their answers.

Mali absently nodded her understanding that it didn't hurt. She trusted him when he said this, but even if it did the discomfort would be worth it. No more house arrest, no more distance between her and Theo. And maybe.. It was a small hope, but maybe Harry Potter could catch the one responsible and give a little meaning to their deaths, something decent to come of it. They all deserved that. When he confirmed that yes, she could have her wand back, Mali managed half of a very strained smile for the man although it died very quickly.
Theo's arrival managed to chase away just a little bit of the heavy, sick feeling. She turned her cheek into Theo's kiss, anything more felt inappropriate for such a somber occasion. Minutes from now their memories would be swirling around in the ornate bowl and Harry, poor Harry Potter, would have to watch two men die. It wasn't anything that she or Theo hadn't seen hundreds of times now, in person and in their nightmares, but the sin was theirs. Not his. The auror shouldn't have to endure such an awful thing on their behalf.
She watched Mister Potter and Remus as they spoke, guilt and anxiety squeezing all the air out of her lungs. The men were close and the auror was undoubtedly feeling the sting of Mister Lupin's loss. It wasn't fair to heap more emotional trauma on top of him because they messed up. What choice did they have? Mali couldn't continue on with the psuedo-isolation of the house arrest. She and Eoin needed space from each other, desperately. She needed space in general, away from nailpolish and cats and the same annoying and confining four walls, she was just a millimeter away from snapping under the stress. It was a miracle that she'd lasted as long as she did, honestly. She probably wouldn't have lasted at all without Mister Lupin, he was a godsend.
Soon the old friends were done talking and their attention was focus on her and Theo. Mali shifted uncomfortably under Mister Lupin's gaze but she nodded her head with a "Yeah, of course." By some miracle Mali managed to sound confident in her answer, but she looked as pale and nervous as she felt. When Mister Potter reiterated his letters, that it was their choice and allowing them to work out the details. "I'll do it." she responded without thinking or even looking at Theo. If one had to focus on the memories, it was better that it was her. They were both ruled by emotions, that's what made them work so well, but their emotions were very different. Mali's emotions guided her, Theo's emotions provoked him. "You can use mine. Do you need both, or can you get by with just one? They'll be the same, won't they?" Maybe not the witch casting the spell, but surely the more important bits would be in her memory.

Closed up in this small space with him now, with nowhere else to really look, Theo realized why he always found himself uncomfortable in the presence of Harry Potter. As he sat there with his own emotions rising, of their own volition, at the task before them - Harry Potter had it all together. From Theo's perspective, the so-called Boy Who Lived always had it together. He was professional and personable, even when Theo was looming and threatening to break his office desk. Mister Lupin, too, was just the same. Theo realized he wasn't like any of these people, that he couldn't meet their expectations. That was also most certainly, to a degree, the nerves talking - but it most certainly didn't help him prepare for what could be the most important moment of his life.
Mali helped, a little, even if she wouldn't kiss him or even look at him. Just being there was enough. Theo knew she was nervous too. It was his fault she was here in the first place; he couldn't blame her (he'd already done enough of that). She was here and that was all that mattered. When Harry Potter spoke up and explained the process to them, Mali surprised him by jumping on the chance to go first. He looked around at her and still she wouldn't look at him. He would stare until she did. "Are you sure?"
Theo would be more than happy to let Mali do the remembering if she truly wanted to; but something was leaving him feeling unsettled about the whole thing. He reached for her hand under the table, for his own reassurance, playing her questions to Harry Potter over in his mind a few times. Every bit of him begged for him to just stay silent, let Mali take the lead like always and spare him the trauma of reliving that day again. It just didn't feel right to stay silent, though, and this feeling of right and wrong is where Theo struggled, his tongue tied. He didn't feel it often, to be perfectly honest. Theo always played to win, always choosing the outcome that was best for himself. He was selfish, simply put. But when one loves someone an awful lot, they sort of become an extension of self. And he loved Mali an awful lot.
"They'll probably need to see what happened before." Theo spoke quietly, distraction evident in his voice. His gaze lingered still on Mali, but he finally looked at Harry Potter. "Before she got there. Can we split it up? So neither of us has to do the whole thing."

Both Mali and Theo appeared very resolute, thoughtful, nervous. Harry waited patiently, both to give them room to think and talk, and also to give himself time. The longer the span of time before he had to watch Fischer and Longbottom Sr. die, the better - that was the selfish thought that flickered in his mind, and he scratched at the back of his neck, ducking his head and obscuring his expression briefly. This was his job, this was his duty and responsibility. It wasn't as though he hadn't seen people die before, he told himself, though he knew that it didn't make a difference - having to watch 1 or 100 people die was too many.
Mali offered to go first, and Harry tilted his head thoughtfully as she spoke, seeming almost puppet-like, small and stiff but still strong. Hufflepuff was a very underrated House, Harry mused, and tilted his head at the both of them, letting Theo speak first. He was far more subdued than he had been at their last meeting, which he supposed was good for everyone involved. He 'hmm'ed thoughtfully, glancing at the Pensieve as if it held the answers.
Harry sighed. Rubbed at his neck again. "I should probably see both," he said, looking back at the two with a creased brow. "The Pensieve is reliable, but not perfect. If you want to limit it..." he chewed his lip carefully. Rubbed at his forehead. Merlin, he was fidgety. He took the time to phrase his words carefully, not wanting to tell Theo and Mali that they had to relive both killings, which is what he should do. Harry let out another breath. "I really should see both," He said, apologetically, not wanting to do either. "The more evidence ... the better. Start from the beginning - and if you feel you cannot continue, or do not want to continue, you can stop at any time." He glanced between the two. "I'm open to compromising, but I should really be... thorough." His expression was melancholy. He turned to Lupin. "What... do you think?" Should he remain totally objective? Or could he limit how much they had to suffer?

There was a pair of eyes burning their way right through Mali and still she was resistant to meet Theo's gaze. While one might think looking at him would strengthen her decision, remind her of who she would be protecting or helping by agreeing to go along with it she was afraid it would have the opposite effect. If she looked at Theo it might stir up memories of the easy little smile on his face as he chased down Mister Fischer, or maybe the terrified and confused Theo after the curse had lifted. It could break her resolve and they would go back to rotting away in their respective homes turned prison cells. The cracks were already forming.
The allure of Theo was too hard to resist for long, even given the situation. Eventually Mali couldn't help herself, she turned her attention to him. There was the hint of a fond smile pulling at the corner of her lips and she nodded, stirring up a bit more confidence. "Absolutely sure." It didn't matter that she didn't feel absolutely sure, the sight of Theo did actually help. They were in this together, him and her. When Theo took her hand she laced her fingers with his. They could do this. He even posed a sort of compromise to the problem at hand and the witch looked to Mister Potter, hope brightening her face.
Of course things couldn't be that easy, though. Mali could feel defeat slumping her shoulders as he sort've stumbled through his answer. They were both on the hook for the full experience. "Let's get on with it then. I'll still go first." Her voice had fallen flat at first, resigned to the task but soon took on an irritated edge. "Just take the memory, get it over with." Her free hand reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear, as if to give him clearer access to her coveted recollection. She wasn't angry, really. Her frustration just had no outlet but Mali wouldn't be Mali if she wasn't full of empathy and compassion. The frustration eased suddenly as she realized what 'getting on with it' meant for Harry.
Mali pulled her hand from Theo's to snatch up Mister Potter's hand, reaching across the table and taking it before he could go for his wand to do the deed. "I need you to remember that we did everything we could." It felt important, for him to know that they didn't simply turn their backs on the men while they were alive. "Theo tried to resist the curse." He tried so hard, it was heartbreaking. "I tried to help them. You have to remember that, alright? I don't know if that can bring you any comfort through this, but it's what we can offer. We fought for them." That was her last ditch effort at comforting The Boy Who Lived and after, Mali sat back in her chair, glanced back towards Theo and then stiffened her spine, ready to allow Harry into the private memory.

Remus simply nodded and smiled at Harry's question before moving to sit down, satisfied with the young man's frankness. How was he, how was Remus? Everyone already knew how Remus was. Perhaps one of Remus' very favorite things about Harry was that he never really expected the answers to such questions. He knew what he was doing by asking them, and that it was enough. Remus would never begrudge the more worrisome of his loved ones, but he often found a friendly face with a quiet smile infinitely more healing.
And because Remus so admired this quality in Harry, he would try to do the same for Mali, as well. Even if he didn't like it when it was targeted toward him, Remus was absolutely a worrier himself. He would ask a question and then another question, just to be sure, and then maybe one more after that. Mali, though, surprised him. She wasn't just ready - she was really ready. Remus kept an eye on her because the way she looked didn't quite match her tone, but he was able to relax back into his chair. This would be mainly Harry's rodeo, Remus was just here for support.
After Harry's introduction, Theo and Mali took some time to debate who would do what. It was really rather sweet. They were both trying to save the other the trouble. Remus remained silent - in reality, he knew Harry (or at least Harry's boss) would want as much evidence as possible; but it was sweet to watch all the same. When he noticed Harry's slight discomfort with explaining this, though, Remus sat forward in his chair - making himself available for opinion, if so asked.
And asked he was. Remus sighed, nodding at Harry and clasping his hands upon the table. "I think having both complete stories side by side will be more convincing, yes. You've far more experience with this than I," Remus waved a hand at the Pensieve, "But I've read piecing together different bits of story isn't the easiest thing in the world." Remus looked at Mali when she spoke - now she definitely wasn't happy, but she was still ready. "Like he said, whenever you want to stop. You're under no actual obligation to give your full memory of the event." He glanced up at Harry for confirmation of this, and then looked between their two prisoners. "That goes for the both of you."
Mali had a bit more to say, a final plea for Harry. When she was finished, Remus returned a critical gaze to Harry as Mali prepared herself. "And you too, Harry. I don't want to interfere in anything - but if you can't watch it, don't. We'll figure something out."
